St. Charles teen gets noticed, gets in Vogue

ST. CHARLES — Any model knows it takes a lot of hard work and a little luck to break into the industry. A big break for 15-year-old Claudia Sitko of St. Charles came in December when a photo shoot featuring her and another St. Charles teen was published in the fashion industryleading magazine Vogue Italia. “I was at school when I found out and I was freaking out,” Claudia said. Chicago fashion photographer Thomas H.P. “Jerry” Jerusalem made no promises that the photos would be accepted by Vogue’s editor when he offered the photo shoot. The shoot featured the girls wearing vintage clothing in and around a 1960s Mustang for a Route 66 road trip theme. Claudia’s mom, Karla Sitko, said Jerusalem first noticed her daughter after she appeared in the Live Out Loud Charity Fashion Show in November. Live Out Loud is a charity organization
focused on suicide prevention. Claudia was one of more than 160 models in the show where she featured clothes from her mom’s boutique. Karla owns Claudia’s Closet LUX Boutique and Consignment in downtown St. Charles, which she opened in April 2011. Karla said beauty queens frequent her shop, including Miss Florida and Miss Illinois. Miss Midwest Madeline Cole of Elburn was in the shop recently looking for formal wear. Cole and her mom introduced Claudia to the founder of Live Out Loud, Sherrie Gearhart, which eventually led to Claudia appearing in the fashion show. “After the show, a bunch of pictures wound up on Facebook,” Karla said. “Kim Cole (Madeline’s mom) then suggested to the photographer (Jerusalem) that Claudia would be excellent for a photo shoot.” For the shoot, Claudia and her friend Daniela Kapusta, 17, of St. Charles, modeled clothing from Claudia’s Closet.
Their hair and make-up were done by Paty Ramirez and Taisha Davilla of One Salon and Bridal in St. Charles. Both St. Charles businesses were credited in Vogue Italia. “I’m very excited,” Karla said. “Our store went global. One Salon went global. How huge is that? ... It just puts [us] on the map. We’re the place to go.” The shoot might help open the door a little wider for Claudia, who’s aspiring to be a fulltime model. “I want to keep doing shoots,” Claudia said. She said her eyes are distinctive, which Jerusalem commented on. During a shoot, models are sometimes asked to think about a story so that they talk with their eyes. But it can be difficult to portray the right persona. “You just kind of go with it,” Claudia said. “You can’t overthink it. You have to be relaxed. ... You just have to [do] different things with your body that look unusual.”
She’d like to try out for the TV show “America’s Next Top Model” but she said she’ll have to wait until she’s 18. At 15, Claudia’s age is something her mother and photographers have to be mindful of. Claudia said some fashion agents want 15year-olds to look more childish, but her look is more adult. Karla said one photographer during a shoot seemed “creepy” and she has to protect her daughter from “weirdos.” “Everything she does, I go with her,” Karla said. And she reviews the photos before they print. “Now, we have to be careful with photographers,” Karla said. “Jerry asked me if a shot was borderline.” But while Claudia’s waiting until she’s 18 to possibly try out for “America’s Next Top Model,” the Vogue shoot already opened the door. Karla said six photo shoots with various local studios were lined up since the Vogue Italia publication .

Structure of style Andrea Reynders sculpts career in fashion design A
fter Andrea Reynders of St. Charles took early retirement from chairing the department of fashion design at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, she found the time to build a clothing line, now carried exclusively by Sandra Webster in Geneva. Her creative career extends from being a visiting artist at the Royal College of Art in London to consulting with art and design schools across the country on developing new fashion studies programs. She and her architect husband, Hennie Reynders, co-teach a design course annually at the SAIC, and have both been involved with the St. Charles Arts Council, including plans for a fashion-themed “neXt gallery” pop-up exhibition this year.

What does your line focus on? I’m producing … one-of-a-kind or small edition clothing. I have been designing my whole adult life. You hardly sound retired. People say retire. I say rewire. If you’re a creative person, it never leaves you. It’s not something you leave at the office and lock the door. What will people find at Sandra Webster? A fine line of coats. I love to work with natural fabrics. They’ll be looking at a lot of natural woolens at the moment. I also love the idea of repurposing woolens and cashmere. … I take really good woolen blankets, wash them, soften them, clean them up and make them beautiful and give them a whole new use and life again. I hunt around for … really good cashmere sweaters. I will launder them and take them apart and recut them and put them into new designs. I truly believe if you have a (well) produced garment and it’s made out of a very good fabric, you could have that garment for many, many years — if it has a good sense of design to it. It’s all about style. I’m not a a trend designer. I’m (aware) of what’s in fashion in the moment, (but) I tend to design something simple and architectural in shape (and) ways of manipulating the garment itself.

Share an example. (My) flip coat … is a two-way coat made in a hightech fiber, a well-made synthetic. You can fold them up into an envelope size. There are two ways of wearing them: One way is a shorter coat (with) two deep pockets and a very full collar that you can make a hood. If you take that coat and turn it upside down, it becomes a longer coat. It’s a trick in design. It still has pockets that are usable. You create garments conducive for travelers. I like to eliminate carrying handbags or purses. I like to build in a lot of pockets. (And) I like to hide pockets in places one wouldn’t expect to look for them, (where) you can keep valuables, a passport, extra money. (I
pick) fabrics that are … wash and wear, and pack up really small.
You’ve been sharing fashion advice with the St. Charles Singers ensemble. I’ve done a lot of costume (work) in my career … for film and theater and advertising. I’m very aware of people’s reaction to what you’re looking at. I’m very interested in all aspects of design and living, and how we can make our lives beautiful, but functional at the same time, so it’s a pleasure to be alive. — RENEE TOMELL

St. Charles East’s Dom Adduci throws a pass during a first-round game against Von Steuben in the Proviso West Holiday Tournament Dec. 26 in Hillside. Matthew Piechalak — mpiechalak@shawmedia.com
‘Shocking’ finish By JASON ROSSI jrossi@shawmedia.com
When he was younger, Dom Adduci played baseball before turning his attention to basketball. He combined the two sports and provided one of the most memorable moments of the 2012 Proviso West Holiday Tournament last week. With 1.6 seconds left and St. Charles East deadlocked with Glenbard East in a quarterfinal game in the sixth-place bracket, Adduci played the role of center fielder and ran under Glenbard East’s long inbound pass. The junior then let his basketball instincts take over. After he caught it near half court, he took one dribble and launched a shot that banked in and gave the Saints a 64-61 win. “I used to play baseball around seventh grade,” Adduci said. “I just knew it was coming right to me and I needed to make a play for it. When I grabbed it I knew I had to get it off. The buzzer-beater set off a wild celebration that saw Adduci sprint from the court all the

way to the fieldhouse wall as the Saints’ bench emptied and chased him down. “I’ve never had anything like this, and it was just kind of shocking,” Adduci said. “Especially the length of the shot, I was shocked when it went in, especially for the win. It was awesome.” The win over Glenbard East also gave East (94) a glimpse of life without Kendall Stephens. The Purdue-bound senior, nursing a torn labrum in his right shoulder since the season got underway, got knocked around in the Saints’ tournament loss to Stevenson and sat out the Glenbard East game with shoulder soreness. But topping the Rams perfectly illustrated what East coach Pat Woods has been telling his team all season. “We talked about the Kendall thing in the past because we didn’t know his status early on in the season, but as I told them today we have enough talent in our locker room to win with or without Kendall, and we proved it tonight,” Woods said. “We have a lot of kids with a lot of ability, so I kind of expect us to compete at that level.” The sweet-shooting Stephens also sat out
East’s tournament finale against St. Joseph, but he led the way with 22 points in the tournament-opening win against Von Steuben and still finished as the team’s third-leading scorer for the tourney with 32 points. With Stephens sitting later in the tourney and the Saints opening with a lopsided win, plenty of players got on the floor and proved their mettle. Jake Asquini was a double-digit scorer against Von Steuben. AJ Washington was the team’s leading rebounder in three games and averaged 11 points per game. Dave Mason played solid ball throughout the tourney, and Cole Gentry provided some quality relief for Adduci at point guard. The tournament run showed East’s depth and provided a boost of confidence. “It’s a huge confidence-builder for everyone,” Adduci said. “People who stepped up — the younger kids on our team, the kids who don’t get major minutes all the time — they stepped up and played unbelievable. We know we’re a solid team and we can win games with or without Kendall.”

North Stars finish 3-1 at Pontiac By JASON ROSSI jrossi@shawmedia.com
Behind three 20-point games from Quinten Payne and solid secondary contributions, the North Stars went 3-1 and placed fifth at the Pontiac Holiday Tournament. “We got contributions from everybody,” North head coach Tom Poulin said. “Quinten did a good job of leading us, but everybody else took advantage of their opportunities and time on the floor.” Payne, a second team all-tournament selection, saved his best for last with 29 points in a 61-49 win over Bloomington in the fifth-place game Dec. 29. North (9-5) outscored Bloomington 33-17 in the second and third quar-

Sam Novak scored 11 and Morgan Rosencrants added eight. North couldn’t protect its 36-29 halftime lead in a 63-58 loss to Resurrection Dec. 27. Silverman and Novak had 14 points each while Nicole Davidson added 11. The holiday tournament began with a 63-41 to Evanston Dec. 26. North fell behind 9-0 at the start and trailed 26-14 midway through the second before storming back with a 15-4 run. The North Stars grabbed a 31-30 lead early in the third quarter but trailed 40-37 heading into the fourth. Novak led the way with 12 points and Davidson tallied 10, while Rosencrants had seven points and 13 rebounds. The North Stars host Geneva in an Upstate Eight River game at 2:30 p.m. Saturday.

It’s ice outside
High school hockey teams ‘have a blast’ playing games on outdoor ice rinks
By DAN SANTAROMITA dsantaromita@shawmedia.com
Many hockey players get nostalgic about playing outside, whether it’s on a manicured rink or a frozen pond. The recent popularity of the NHL’s Winter Classic has given extra attention to the idea of playing outdoors and more area high school teams are jumping on the bandwagon. “It’s something every team should do,” said Glenbard coach Jason Hawkins. “We obviously picked it up from the NHL. We stole their idea and ran with it.” The Illinois High School Hockey League West Division, which features area teams Bartlett Wheaton West, Hinsdale Central, South Hockey and York, even took the name and Jan. 1 date from the NHL. “We’ve got what we call our Winter Classic games,” West commissioner Jim McKeague said. “We play at the Elmhurst YMCA for the varsity games and we play at the outdoor rink at Evergreen Park for the JV. There’s a total of eight games this year. It started out as two. They’ve been very successful.” For the third consecutive year, the Glenbard hockey club will play an outdoor game against PREP at the Watts Ice Center in Glencoe. This season’s matchup was set for Jan. 5. “The kids have a blast with it,” Hawkins said. “They put on the eye black even though we play our game at night. It’s a really great experience and we’ve had a lot of success with it.” Hawkins said that it usually takes the two teams a little bit to get acclimated to the new environment but after that, it is

business as usual. “The first period, the teams are feeling it out, getting used to it,” he said. “But once they get comfortable, it gets really competitive. Both teams really want to win it.” Hinsdale Central has already played two outdoor games this season, one in Cicero and one in Elmhurst. The Red Devils faced Lyons Township in one of those matchups with Chicago Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville dropping the puck. “It brings you back to old-style, oldschool hockey,” said Hinsdale Central coach Mike Rohdenburg. “Everybody really enjoyed it. It is different and a different kind of environment but I liked it a lot.” “Hockey players just love playing outdoors or out on the pond,” LT coach Ricky Reznick said. “You’re playing in a different setting, you’re outside, you’re playing in a rink you’re not used to. It’s just a good night of hockey for both clubs participating in it.” While most players would enjoy an outdoor game, it’s not something that every program is doing yet. AWF coach Marc Pinto is in his first year with the team and hasn’t entertained the

thought of playing outside. Pinto admitted the ice conditions aren’t always the best outside and can slow down the play, however, he has fond memories of playing outside. “I grew up playing at the Elmhurst Y,” Pinto said. “Every now and then we’d skate with a bunch of guys." The Elmhurst YMCA is one of a few outdoor options available in the area along with the Evergreen Park Ice Rink and the Community Ice Rink in Cicero. Scott Schmid also contributed to the report.
Change brings co-op hockey teammates closer By DAN SANTAROMITA dsantaromita@shawmedia.com
A number of high school sports are forced to utilize co-op teams to make numbers for a full team. Hockey has one of the more complicated coop set ups because there isn’t as much organization as there is with the Illinois High School Association for other sports. Last year the Amateur Hockey Association of Illinois decided to reorganize its co-op teams to group teams within districts and limit travel times for some of the players as much as possible. One of the worst travel set ups involved players from Montini, which played on the same team with players from Andrew in Tinley Park. Now, the Bronco hockey players are grouped with Addison Trail, Willowbrook and Fenton in a more local set up. “We looked at the high schools that made sense playing together,” said Illinois High School Hockey League West Division Commissioner Jim McKeague. The Fox Valley Hawks fall into that category — players attend Batavia, Geneva, St. Charles East and St. Charles North (a handful of players, from Oswego and Aurora Christian and Kaneland are grandfathered in). There have been some roadbumps as the team meshes together, but that process should be easier in the future. “This is my third year in a row running a combination team,” said Hawks head coach Jim Quinn, who coached a St. Charles East-St. Charles North-Hampshire-Burlington Central team last season and an East-North co-op the year before. “It makes it harder to mesh as a team, but it seems to be coming together. It’s working out now, and we have a good nucleus that should be back with us next year.” The Glenbard Hockey Club got an addition this year as Glenbard East joined the group which already included Glenbard North, Glenbard South and Glenbard West. “They wanted to see more long-term solutions,” said Glenbard coach Jason Hawkins. “In the past, it was a lot more year to year. They wanted to make it more geographical-based. Solidifying the co-ops should help teams have long-term success. “And for us, it is a good thing for the players to be all together as a district.” Things are still a bit murky for the South Hockey Club, which includes players from Hinsdale South (seven) and Downers Grove South (five). Downers Grove North, which used to co-op with Lemont and Lockport, has three players on the varsity team, while there are a few Lemont and Lockport students who still play for the South Hockey JV team. The new redistricting rules are more geographically friendly, which is both a positive and negative for South Hockey. “I have football players from all three schools,” head coach Mike Dorich said. “In every other sport it’s a big rivalry for those schools and now they’re trying to form a team together. It’s hard to change that mentality.”
