LA GRANGE — Michelle Wrona was a research specialist at the department of surgery in Loyola University Medical Center’s Burn & Shock Trauma Institute when she learned from her boss that students at Morton East High School would be coming in to shadow her. “I was livid,” Wrona said. “‘I’m not a babysitter’ — I gave her this whole speech.” Three years later, Wrona, who now teaches science at Lyons Township High School, earned a 2012 Outstanding New Teacher of the Year award by the Chicago Drug and Chemical Association. Leilani Lopez, also an LT science teacher, shared the honor with Wrona. “It was clear I had a totally different idea what high school students were like,” Wrona said. “I loved them. It was an amazing experience. And here I am.”
What does it mean to you to receive the honor of being named 2012 Outstanding New Teacher of the Year by the Chicago Drug and Chemical Association? It’s such an honor. They are such an amazing group. They recognize teachers are spending their own money to do things with their classroom. That’s universal, and you’re happy to do it. Last month I baked 100 cupcakes for my kids. That comes with the gig. If you show them you care, they’ll care.
A lot of discussion is made of the younger generation’s need for instant gratification as well as how quickly they become distracted. How difficult is that to deal with, especially in a subject like science? That’s a challenge that needs to be faced every day. People need to make labs different. There’s so many different aspects of science. No matter what the spectrum, you’re going to hit some kids’ common ground. It’s tough at the high school level because you are teaching a lot of contentdriven things.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of teaching for you? The thing is, the kids blow you away. Making that connection with them is something really special. They finally want to share things they’ve seen with you. It’s really exciting. After that, the amount of support I have here is unbelievable. The staff makes it easier. I would not be half the teacher I am without my mentor.

What’s the most surprising and difficult aspect of teaching for you? Certain kids have difficult home settings. It’s important to be alert to it and always remember that. Sometimes it’s not a choice whether they hand in their homework or not. It’s emotionally difficult. It’s really so much more an emotional job than I’d ever realized it’d be.

Cars burglarized n A resident in the 4000 block of Raymond Avenue reported the theft of numerous power tools of an unknown value from his work truck Dec. 18. The lock on the back door had been punched through sometime

overnight. n Someone entered an unlocked side door to a residential garage in the 9000 block of Congress Park Avenue sometime overnight Dec. 16 and rifled through two unlocked cars, making off with a GPS system. The residents discovered the loss the next morning after noticing the glove compartments were open in both cars. The value of the GPS system is unknown. n A gig bag containing a Fender guitar and various other musical equipment was reported stolen from the trunk of a car that was parked in an unlocked garage in the 3900 block of Sunnyside Avenue between 8 p.m. Dec. 17 and 7 a.m. Dec. 18. In another
car parked in the same garage, a Garmin GPS was taken. The value of the items are unknown.
RIVERSIDE Police: Man driving on three tires charged with DUI A Chicago man was charged with driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol Dec. 21 in Riverside after he had been driving on only three tires for two hours. Jose Negron, 53, of the 1400 block of North Kedzie Avenue, was stopped by
police that night on Harlem Avenue. Negron allegedly claimed he was looking for a gas station to change the tire on his 1993 Ford Explorer, but in two hours had not found one — even though he passed three. The Riverside police officer observed Negron to be disoriented and having slurred speech, so he was asked to complete standardized field-sobriety tests to ensure he was safe to drive. Negron allegedly admitted to taking Xanax before driving but denied drinking alcohol. Negron also was cited with other traffic violations.

BROOKFIELD — The Chicago Zoological Society has announced the birth of two litters of dwarf mongoose pups at Brookfield Zoo. The litters, born on Sept. 12 and Nov. 24, include three males and four unsexed puppies respectively. Guests visiting the zoo can see the family in the Habitat Africa! The Savannah exhibit. These are the first litters for the mom, Tavi, 3. The sire of the offspring is Gimbi, 13. The pairing of tthe two was based on a recommendation from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ Dwarf Mongoose Species Survival Plan (SSP). An SSP is a cooperative population management and conservation program for select species in accredited AZA zoos and aquariums. Each SSP manages the breeding of a species to maintain a healthy and selfsustaining population that is both genetically diverse and demographically stable.
Currently, 12 accredited zoos in North America exhibit the species. Brookfield Zoo has had dwarf mongooses since 1993, the year Habitat Africa! opened. Mongoose pups are born with their eyes closed; they open when they are about 13 days old. Mongooses are very gregarious and have a highly cooperative society with well-developed social roles. There is one dominant female and male in a group as well as subordinate males and older offspring. The subordinate males and older offspring usually help care for the younger pups in the group. Puppies begin to play fight after their eyes open. This is practice for when they are older and need to defend their own territories. In the wild, mongooses are found in the dry open savannahs, woodlands and brush of Africa and use underground den sites in the roots of trees or termite mounds for shelter and to give birth.

Officials believe they leave village in very good shape
When we ran for election to the Riverside Village Board in April 2009, we did so with the intention of providing the residents of Riverside with a better choice: better than the oneparty rule of many years; a better way of budgeting; a better way of providing opportunities for input from the public; a better focus on business, not overdevelopment in our business districts. We ran four years ago to put an end to unchecked spending and a seemingly continual push for higher property taxes. It was never our ambition to run Riverside for any extended period of time. We wanted to prove that there was a different, smarter way to do things in Riverside. A smarter way to conserve tax dollars and create a thriving, functioning and responsive village and local government. Residents now know that there is no need for a property tax increase to maintain — or even expand — village services. Rather than running out of money, as was predicted before we were elected, the village now enjoys a substantial surplus and is in, as one local media outlet called it, an “enviable” fiscal position. Residents now know that when the Village Board plays an active role in overseeing village operations, there is no need to threaten cuts in village services as an excuse to try and push through a tax increase. Thumbs Up — Park Junior High music teacher Jeff Teppema of La Grange Park and Lombard Assistant Public Works Director Dave Gorman recently decided to put together a fundraiser that incorporated their love of biking with their time spent in Africa. They’ll spend $20,000 to ship 500 bikes to the children of Lesotho, with more than $16,000 raised so far. Both friends had spent time in Africa — Teppema back in 1979 during a safari run by his mother for Elmhurst College and Gorman from 1989 to 1992 while he served in the Peace Corps.

The Riverside Police Department wishes to express its deepest sympathies to the families of those lost in the senseless tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut and to the entire town of Newtown for the events that took place Dec. 14. I have been asked numerous times by school-age parents, residents and family and friends how we can prevent a tragedy similar to the one that took place in Connecticut from happening at the schools in Riverside. My answer has been consistent, and it’s really twofold. The first is training and the second is communication. While no law enforcement executive can make any guarantees when it comes to school shootings, I can assure the Tom Weitzel residents of Riverside and the residents of the surrounding communities that feed into our school districts that every reasonable precaution to provide a safe learning environment to the faculty and students of the Riverside school districts has been taken. These precautions clearly can save lives. The Riverside Police Department along with our partners (the Brookfield Police Department, Brookfield Zoo Police Department, La Grange Park Police Department, Lyons Police Department and North Riverside Police Department) routinely train on rapid-response incidences to school events. We have mutually developed a rapid-response plan for extraordinary events at our schools, discussed those plans, held tabletop exercises and practical life exercises. If you have a student who attends Riverside Public School District 96, Riverside High School District 208 schools or St. Mary’s, we will communicate our message to you in a clear and concise manner. We encourage the public to make suggestions as to how we can better prepare and prevent a Sandy Hook from taking place at Riverside schools. In the coming months, it is my desire to hold a public meeting so students, staff and parents can directly ask questions to police executives as to what we are doing to ensure the safety of our children. A public discussion must take place to guarantee support from the community. I pledge open communications from the Riverside Police Department. I would like to offer my praise to the teachers and school staff of Sandy Hook Elementary School who were thrust into becoming first-responders and in what can only be described as a chaotic and violent situation. Their actions under fire to protect the children inspired us all. Equally inspiring was the courage of the police, fire and emergency medical personnel who without hesitation rapidly responded to Sandy Hook Elementary School. Riverside police, fire departments team up with RB RIVERSIDE — Riverside Police Sgt. Bill Gutschick and firefighter Frank Ringo recently coordinated with Riverside Brookfield High School teachers Melissa Hammer and Kim Thomas to instruct a class for RB’s special needs students ages 18 through 22. The class focused on a variety of information such as home safety, interaction with strangers, poisons, electrocution, assaults, current laws and fire safety. Taught by Gutschick and Ringo, the class ran more than three hours long and concluded with a tour of the police and fire facilities. “We don’t want to forget about those with special needs and this was a great opportunity to provide these young people with a variety of information and skills they can use in their everyday lives,” Gutschick said.

We trust that the next village board will not return to the old ways, which produced plans for a hidden property tax increase in the form of a tax increment financing district and a property tax hike on the ballot. Instead, we hope they continue to budget sensibly and grow village savings and services.
While we will not be candidates for reelection in 2013, during our remaining term in office we will continue to invest our time, effort and passion on behalf of the residents of Riverside. It has been, and always will be an honor and a privilege to have represented our National Historic Landmark community.

A long and happy life of service to others ended suddenly for Paul Roland Heefner when he passed away at 92 in his independent residence at Windsor Park Manor in Carol Stream, IL on Tuesday, December 18, 2012. Born May 27, 1920 in Des Moines, Iowa, he moved at the age of nine with his asthma-stricken mother throughout Colorado and New Mexico. After her death, his adult sisters in Iowa raised him from 14 to 19, until he left for Chicago to attend Moody Bible Institute. But he interrupted schooling to enlist in the U.S. Army and served as a corporal in the 14th Armored Division, 1942 through 1945, and was awarded the Bronze Star medal for his service in the Rhineland and Central Europe campaigns of World War II. After the military, he graduated from Moody in 1948 and earned his Bachelor of Theology degree from Northern Baptist Theological Seminary in 1955. From 1949 to 1953, he pastored Roberts Road Bible Church in Justice. His career was with Western Electric in Cicero, where he worked in various offices for 35 years. He moved his family to Westmont in 1957, and finally moved with his “Lovey Doll” Viola, his bride since 1943, into Windsor in 1990. As a retiree, he performed volunteer work for 19 organizations, causes, and events, mostly as daily or weekly assignments. He also registered voters and served as a judge of election and a precinct captain. To directly help others, he manned a hotline at the Billy Graham Center and transported patients at Central DuPage Hospital. Aside from these pursuits, he loved reading, running (especially 5K races, which he competed in until he was 89), singing, leading songs, and teaching the Bible. His proudest affiliation was as member of what he called “Christ’s Body on Earth.” He did tireless work to honor veterans and, in his final act of service to his fellow man, he gave his organs to the Rush Memory and Aging Project to support their research. He is survived by three children, Roland (Roberta) Heefner of Pineville, NC, Glen Heefner of Yorkville, IL, and Deborah Wilke (Leona Jones) of Bolingbrook, IL; five grandchildren, Ruth Holmes, Robert (Michelle) Heefner, Ryan Heefner, Melissa (Jon) Sallee, and Charles Wilke; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded
in death by his wife Viola; all four sisters, Violet, Margaret, Ruby, and Paula; and his brother Steve. A visitation will be held Friday, December 28, from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the funeral service to be held at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel at Wheaton Bible Church, 27W500 North Avenue, in West Chicago, IL. A luncheon will follow at the church, and then a committal service in the chapel at Clarendon Hills Cemetery in Darien, IL. ACHIEVEMENTS ■ Lyons Township High School was named a semi-
finalist in the GRAMMY Foundation’s Signature Schools program, recognizes top U.S. public high schools that are making an outstanding commitment to music education during an academic school year. Only 129 schools nationwide were recognized. As a semifinalist school, LT is submitting additional documentation, such as recordings of school concerts, sample concert programs and repertoire,
which will then reviewed by an independent blueribbon committee of top music educators and professionals to determine the semifinalists that merit GRAMMY Signature School status. In mid-March, the GRAMMY Foundation will announce the finalists. These schools will receive a custom award and a monetary grant ranging from $1,000 to $10,000 to benefit their music program. The top finalists will be designated as Gold recipients. The best of the Gold recipients is then determined and designated as the National GRAMMY Signature School. The remaining schools are designated GRAMMY Signature Schools.

Empowering people with disabilities is the mission of the Ray Graham Association, whose group homes and other facilities offer volunteer opportunities ranging from helping clients craft valentines for their families to assisting the therapeutic horsemanship program, where three attendants are required for each rider. The horseback program, which can always use help, involved 160 youth volunteers in November alone, says Mary Beth Glenn, major gifts facilitator for the association. “Kids volunteer whose parents volunteered in the (riding) program; they loved it so much, they bring their kids,” Glenn says, noting it nurtures a habit of volunteerism. “They make friends, meet good kids who volunteer their time and … walk away from it not knowing who benefited the most from it.”
WHOM IT HELPS The organization has 35 facilities across DuPage County, but offers its services to everyone in the state and beyond its borders. Glenn says family members travel all the way from Wisconsin for the overnight

respite services provided caregivers. The association encompasses educational, vocational, community, early intervention, recreational, home-based and residential programs. The spirit of volunteerism travels full circle. The people who receive services from the association love to give back to the community, Glenn says. They help deliver food through Meals on Wheels, and assist at Feed My Starving Children in Aurora. Once a week, they serve dinner at the Downers Grove Community Church. Following their example, Ray Graham employees conducted a Christmas gift drive to help the Sharing
Volunteers age 13 and older can lend their time and talents. “We had a woman step forward who was a music therapist, and now comes to the Elmhurst Community Learning Center once a week and does music therapy,” Glenn says. “(It) fulfills her need to give back to the community.” She says people can arrange to visit a group home to provide companionship, play a board game, work a puzzle or read the newspaper with someone. And car lovers can support the organization by purchasing tickets to the Chicago Auto Show’s First Look for Charity at 7 p.m. Feb. 8 at McCormick Place in Chicago. The Ray Graham Association is one of 18 charities chosen by the Chicago Automobile Trade Association. For information on the $250 tickets, email Glenn. 16th Street Theater readies new plays A nother season is about to launch at Berwyn’s 16th Street Theater, where Artistic Director Ann Filmer provides a sneak peek at coming attractions with the common theme, “The American Dream.” Complementing the five plays will be a Berwyn Reads! citywide project in collaboration with the theater, with the library set to announce the title soon.
How did you craft this sixth season, and what’s the first, one-man play about? I’m really fascinated by the role of storytellers in society. I love what Picasso said: “Art is the lie that enables … the truth.” That’s why I love this piece, “The Agony and the Ecstasy of Steve Jobs 2.0.” It kicks us into where we are today in terms of our economy being not centered in our country — anywhere but. Are we also exporting the poor condiBaker tions we used to work under before there were unions and laws? Exported them elsewhere and out of sight, so we can have our cheap goods — and what are the repercussions of that? (Note: The show stars Jeff Award winner Lance Baker.) The playwright, Juan Francisco Villa, performs ‘Empanada for a Dream?’ I’m so thrilled. He’s an ensemble member of Teatro Vista. “Empanada” is co-produced with them. It is an unbelievable story that is true. It’s a story about his neighborhood, growing up on the Lower Villa East Side of New York, and his uncle and the business they were involved
in. Juan is an amazing performer. The piece is so full of joy and full of life, even though the tale itself can be harrowing at times.
The show ‘8,’ about California’s Prop. 8, will have a reading in Oak Park. This is a piece that has been traveling across the country. It’s the actual transcript of the trial of Perry vs. Schwarzenegger. I think people will be incredibly moved by the testimony of the plaintiff. It shows us how threatened we can be of love. It’s a cast of 23. We’ll have some high-profile Chicago actors in that. It is co-produced with the Oak Park Area Lesbian and Gay Association. What is the next play about? “Living Large in a Mini Kind of Way” is based on a true story (by) Diane Rodriguez. A woman who worked for her family as a domestic did steal a Social Security number. This really inspired her to delve into the issue of how far would one go to acquire a Social Security number. (It also explores) the differences between assimilated immigrants and the new immigrants. Diane writes (in) almost a … fantastical style. It’s definitely a comedy. It’s really fun — a candy-coated play that then deals with deeper issues. It succeeds. And ‘Broken Fences?’ I’ve wanted to do this play since 2009, and finally got the rights. This is going to be the world premiere. It is about gentrification and about one couple who’s moving into a neighborhood which is very quickly gentrifying, and the neighbors who are being pushed out … even though they’ve lived there for generations. The property taxes have increased to such an extent that they can no longer afford them. It is a question of … what is progress and who is progress for? Steven (Simoncic) is a wonderful writer. I think that’s going to be one of the highlights. — RENEE TOMELL

Like many Americans that get into basketball, Miki Ljuboja was inspired by something he saw on TV. What’s different about Ljuboja is that what inspired him was the Yugoslavian Men’s National Team. Ljuboja’s parents are from Serbia, and he is the first in the family to be born in the United States. When Yugoslavia won the FIBA World Championship in 2002, Ljuboja knew basketball was for him. “Basketball is huge in Serbia,” he said. “They love basketball there. I was a kid watching the Yugoslavian team win the World Championships. After Points per that my dream was basgame for RB’s ketball.” Miki Ljuboja Little did that kid through Dec. 26 to go along watching Vlade Divac with 9.2 rebounds per game and Peja Stojakovic know, he would grow up to be 6-foot-8. The Riverside Brookfield senior has since put in the time to learn all the post moves required of a big man. Ljuboja has been one of the top post players in the area thanks to his shooting touch and strong rebounding play inside. “It’s just a lot of repetition,” Ljuboja said. “It’s just a lot of practice on footwork.” He has been putting up big numbers for the Bulldogs so far this season. Ljuboja was held to single-digit scoring in just one of RB’s first 12 games this season. “He’s been huge,” RB coach Tom McCloskey said. “He’s really had a good senior year scoring and rebounding.” College is the next step, but Ljuboja doesn’t know where he will end up. He currently has a pair of Division II offers from Hillsdale College and Grand Valley State, both in Michigan. The Bulldog big man said he is waiting until the end of the season before making any decisions on his future. Part of the reason for the delay is that a back injury kept him out of the crucial AAU season during the summer. Ljuboja, like a true basketball junkie, still showed support for a pair of his Illinois Old School AAU teammates, Benjy Lerman and Jason Markis of Glenbrook North, by attending their first-round game at the Proviso West Holiday Tournament the morning before his RB squad played its opener at York’s Jack Tosh Holiday Classic. Ljuboja remains focused on the current RB season, but don’t expect a clear answer of whether he would support the United States or Serbia in a basketball game. “A little bit of both,” he said. “Hopefully it’s the gold medal game.”

Many hockey players get nostalgic about playing outside, whether it’s on a manicured rink or a frozen pond. The recent popularity of the NHL’s Winter Classic has given extra attention to the idea of playing outdoors and more area high school teams are jumping on the bandwagon. “It’s something every team should do,” said Glenbard coach Jason Hawkins. “We obviously picked it up from the NHL. We stole their idea and ran with it.” The Illinois High School Hockey League West Division, which features area teams Bartlett Wheaton West, Hinsdale Central, South Hockey and York, even took the name and Jan. 1 date from the NHL. “We’ve got what we call our Winter Classic games,” West commissioner Jim McKeague said. “We play at the Elmhurst YMCA for the varsity games and we play at the outdoor rink at Evergreen Park for the JV. There’s a total of eight games this year. It started out as two. They’ve been very successful.” For the third consecutive year, the Glenbard hockey club will play an outdoor game against PREP at the Watts Ice Center in Glencoe. This season’s matchup was set for Jan. 5. “The kids have a blast with it,” Hawkins said. “They put on the eye black even though we play our game at night. It’s a really great experience and we’ve had a lot of success with it.” Hawkins said that it usually takes the two teams a little bit to get acclimated to the new environment but after that, it is business as usual.

It is different and a different kind of environment but I liked it a lot.” “Hockey players just love playing outdoors or out on the pond,” LT coach Ricky Reznick said. “You’re playing in a different setting, you’re outside, you’re playing in a rink you’re not used to. It’s just a good night of hockey for both clubs participating in it.” While most players would enjoy an outdoor game, it’s not something that every
program is doing yet. AWF coach Marc Pinto is in his first year with the team and hasn’t entertained the thought of playing outside. Pinto admitted the ice conditions aren’t always the best outside and can slow down the play, however, he has fond memories of playing outside. “I grew up playing at the Elmhurst Y,” Pinto said. “Every now and then we’d skate with a bunch of guys." The Elmhurst YMCA is one of a few outdoor options available in the area along with the Evergreen Park Ice Rink and the Community Ice Rink in Cicero. Scott Schmid also contributed to the report.

A number of high school sports are forced to utilize co-op teams to make numbers for a full team. Hockey has one of the more complicated co-op set ups because there isn’t as much organization as there is with the Illinois High School Association for other sports. Last year the Amateur Hockey Association of Illinois decided to reorganize its co-op teams to group teams within districts and limit travel times for some of the players as much as possible. One of the worst travel set ups involved players from Montini, which played on the same team with players from Andrew in Tinley Park. Now, the Bronco hockey
players are grouped with Addison Trail, Willowbrook and Fenton in a more local set up. “We looked at the high schools that made sense playing together,” said Illinois High School Hockey League West Division Commissioner Jim McKeague. The Glenbard Hockey Club got an addition this year as Glenbard East joined the group which already included Glenbard North, Glenbard South and Glenbard West. “They wanted to see more long-term solutions,” said Glenbard coach Jason Hawkins. “In the past, it was a lot more year to year. They wanted to make it more geographical-based. Solidifying the co-ops should help teams have long-term success. “And for us, it is a good thing for the players to be all
together as a district.” Things are still a bit murky for the South Hockey Club, which includes players from Hinsdale South (seven) and Downers Grove South (five). Downers Grove North, which used to co-op with Lemont and Lockport, has three players on the varsity team, while there are a few Lemont and Lockport students who still play for the South Hockey JV team. The new redistricting rules are more geographically friendly, which is both a positive and negative for South Hockey. “I have football players from all three schools,” head coach Mike Dorich said. “In every other sport it’s a big rivalry for those schools and now they’re trying to form a team together. It’s hard to change that mentality.”

Reader provides more 426 Hemi news Q: Hello, Greg, I read your article on the Hemi and found a correction on the year available and some added historical facts. First, the 426 Hemi engine first roared to life in Chrysler’s dyno rooms in December 1963 and was coded the A-864 engine. Testing was in preparation for the targeted debut at the 1964 Daytona 500. By the race’s end, Hemipowered Dodge and Plymouth cars took four of the top five places as Richard Petty took the win by more than a lap. Actually, 1964 marked the first availability of the 426 Hemi in cars that could be ordered by the general public and street driven. While most were purchased for drag racing duty, anyone with money could walk into a Chrysler dealer and order a Hemi Dodge or Plymouth, get it licensed and drive it home. However, few customers were aware of this fact and, accordingly, very few were ordered and driven on the street. You mentioned the Ford 429 Hemi engine, which was actually a 427 in the development stage. In 1969 Ford fielded their own Hemi head design engine, the BOSS 429, which had good success against the Chrysler Hemi. Interestingly, the street versions of the Ford Boss 429 were only installed into 1969 or 1970 Boss 429 Mustangs (selling enough to qualify their Hemi headed engine design for

NASCAR involvement) yet only used in the Ford Talladega, a special Torinobased NASCAR aerodynamic design. In 1965, as you mentioned, Chrysler did not compete in NASCAR and no street-legal Hemis were sold. There was a 1965 special run of 100 Dodge and Plymouth drag race cars built, identified by “R0” VIN tag numbers for Plymouths and “W0” for Dodge while the Hemi engine package was called A-990. In 1966 Chrysler offered the 426 Hemi in any
of their Dodge and Plymouth B-body platform cars, including Dodge Coronet and Charger and Plymouth Belvedere and Satellite two-door, four-door, convertible and even station wagons in an effort to sell enough Hemis to make them a standard production engine.
NASCAR thus allowed them to compete again although limiting the Hemi to 405 inches for 1966 racing. The Street Hemi, as it is known, was a milder version of the original design and in a de-tuned state came in at 425 horsepower and 490 ft. lbs. of torque.
Hemis were very expensive to produce considering the cars they were available in cost around $3,000 and the Hemi alone added near $1,000 more! Accordingly total Hemi car production including all models combined sold between the first available year of 1964 and the final year of 1971 was just over 10,000 total units. The 30-year fixed eased slightly this week to average 3.35 percent, while the 15-year fixed remained unchanged at 2.65 percent. News Facts 30-year fixed-rate mortgage (FRM) averaged 3.35 percent with an average 0.7 point for the week ending December 27, 2012, down from last week when it averaged 3.37 percent. Last year at this time, the 30-year FRM averaged 3.95 percent. 15-year FRM this week averaged 2.65 percent with an average 0.7 point, unchanged from last week when it averaged 2.65 percent. A year ago at this time, the 15-year FRM averaged 3.24 percent. 5-year Treasury-indexed hybrid adjustable-rate mort-
gage (ARM) averaged 2.70 percent this week with an average 0.7 point, down from last week when it averaged 2.71 percent.
