WELCOME TO SUBURBAN LEEDS Welcome to edition 17 of Suburban Magazine. It has been a very busy month here at the Suburban office – trying to come up with one or two activities that may help to keep our children occupied in the school holidays, something that I and many of my colleagues struggle with. Hopefully, you may find something that your family would enjoy in our school holiday feature!

if your town/village is entered, you can have a look on their website - www.yorkshireinbloom.co.uk

The Big Disco, featured last month will have now taken place and hopefully many people joined in and had fun with the event.

If you have a topic that you would like us to try and cover in a future edition, please let us know and I will be happy to try and accommodate this.

Just a mention as well to say good luck to all of the local ‘In Bloom’ groups who have been entered into the upcoming Yorkshire in Bloom competition. If you would like to see

We are now working on edition 18 which will deadline 29/7/16.

As always, we thank our advertisers for their valued custom and also to our contributors who have provided articles this month. If you have anything you would like to submit for consideration, please forward to editorial@suburbanleeds.co.uk

LOCAL NEWS If you are eligible for financial help from us, you can then either choose for us to arrange your support or choose to receive a Direct Payment that you can then use to make your own support arrangements. You can also get help with care at home. This is when you ask a care worker to visit you in your own home, or ask us to arrange for someone to do this for you. They will help with personal care and some practical household tasks so you stay as independent as possible. This is often for a short time until you can manage for yourself again, or it can be for longer if you need it.

You can get help with things like: • • •

Getting washed and using the toilet Getting out of bed and dressing Undressing and going to bed

The NHS has more general information about home care on their website. If you choose for the council to make the arrangements for you, we will aim to select the most appropriate services based on your needs. This could include homecare and support for carers. You can arrange and pay

for home care yourself. If you buy help privately you can choose the type of help you receive and the amount that you want. If you would like more information about care providers in your area there is a lot of information at http://leedsdirectory.org/ You can also find out about organisations that provide home care on the Care Quality Commission website: www.cqc.org.uk If you want more information, please call Adult Social Care on 0113 222 4401 (Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm). If you are unable to use the telephone you can email us using the Contact us form on this page.

HOW TO RETAIN YOUR INDEPENDENCE AND RECEIVE CARE AND SUPPORT

hand 24 hours a day. Meanwhile, clients with greater care or nursing needs can access exactly what they need, when they need it.

For too long, the only way many people could access the additional care and support they needed as they grew older was to sell the family home and dip into their assets to pay for it.

The advantages of this model are many: you own your own home, thus you retain your assets; you don’t have to pay to rent; and only accessing services such as nursing, care, meals, laundry etc when required reduces the fees you would pay for full time care.

Thankfully, forward thinking providers such as Westward Care, now offer what it calls ‘independent living’ apartments with care and support at two of its locations in North Leeds - Southlands (Roundhay) and Headingley Hall (Headingley). Clients with no care needs can live completely independently in their apartment, paying only for the services they use, with the reassurance that help and support is on

Peter Hodkinson, Managing Director, Westward Care highlights: “For every client that needs round the clock care and support, there are more people that want to feel secure and free from the worries of running a house. We have responded by developing a true independent alternative to care and support in later life.” For more information call – 0113 265 5876 or visit www.westwardcare.co.uk

ALWOODLEY REVIEW – JUNE 2016 You might not believe this but there are some problems that city councillors find almost insoluble. At present the most pressing are the connected difficulties around the junction of The Avenue and King Lane. It is easier to find the problems than find the answers but the main questions seem to be: turning right into the Avenue when coming north on King Lane, parking on King Lane just north of the junction, traffic coming in and out of the Tesco car park, especially at busy times, and the gradual creeping of car parking up the Avenue outside residential houses.

Mortgages

made easy

One or two people have suggested that we use a small part of the village green to provide new parking places but the three city councillors will never agree to that; the village green took long enough to organise and is non-negotiable. We would like to hear any realistic and practical suggestions for these ever-increasing traffic problems and we will be only too happy to take your ideas to the Highways people for them to look at. It’s worst coming out of the Tesco car park and trying to push across the two lanes of traffic. I never know whether to remain where I am or leave and take a chance. Which sums up my month, I suppose. Cllr Neil Buckley Alwoodley Ward
