Inside Su Casa

Welcome to the Spring Issue of Su Casa

C

an you feel the warmth in the air and hear the birds singing? As the sun graces us a bit longer each day during the unfolding of this new season, we at Su Casa are optimistic about returning to “normal” life while embracing the changes that stemmed from the past year—changes that highlighted the ‘home’ as the foundation of modern life. As an emphasis on self-care becomes a renewed priority, we look inside several bathrooms that feature gorgeous soaking tubs designed for relaxation and rejuvenation. These inspired designs will have you rethinking your master bathroom and the way you unwind. Look forward to the Spring Parade of Homes—a chance to get out and envision something new for our lives. Su Casa navigates you through our beautiful community and showcases the latest in building and design trends. This parade’s Signature Community, Inspiration by Pulte Group, takes cues from 2020 with a fresh approach to living spaces, including new flexible floor plans. Signature Builder Abrazo Homes brings “hometown” to your home base with their “better not bigger” team approach to building. Our featured homes in this issue offer lessons in contrast. One project by New Haven Homes in Corrales beautifully blends traditional and rustic elements with clean, modern lines. And the second, designed and built by Santa Fe’s The Virginian Designer/Builder, Inc., is a wholly Southwestern exterior juxtaposed against a sleek, minimalist interior. As we continue to stay safe and limit the size of our gatherings, we can still endeavor to make them just as memorable as a full-blown party. Check out the gorgeous tablescapes that transform even the most intimate family meal into a five-star event. While you’re at it, consider the high-quality, handmade dinnerware and other home decor items from the local artisans at Hanselmann Pottery. With each issue, I’m amazed by the talent in our community, including gifted artisans, local builders and interior designers. We witness the ingenuity of small-business owners, who have been creative in their efforts to remain open and serve our community at the highest level, even in the face of challenges and uncertainty. Their collective work contributes richness to our New Mexican culture and enhances our incomparable lifestyle. Look forward together with us … the freshness of springtime awaits.

dateless design

Patrick Coulie

On a lot that many builders overlooked because of its steep terrain, Jon Hartenberger saw an opportunity to create a modern home that would capture the 230-degree views of the Sandia Mountains. Floor-to-ceiling windows in a Mondrian-esque design reach more than 18-feet high on one wall, while additional carefully placed windows offer the far-ranging views from the top of the sleek staircase. Travertine floors, American Clay walls and warm colors prevent the minimalist design from feeling stark. The pine ceiling with a muted whitewash tops off this forever-fresh home design. “We strived to make the house timeless and modern,” says Hartenberger, “but not so modern that it would be cold and sterile.” Hartenberger Construction, jon_hartenberger.houzz.com

Texas Red Yucca Scientific name: Hesperaloe parviflora Light requirements: Full sun Size at maturity: 3’ wide; 5’ tall Although native to Texas, this colorful succulent is a perfect match for the Albuquerque-area climate, so Salman often recommends it to his clients. The benefits are numerous—it’s easy to grow, attracts butterflies and hummingbirds, is perfect for container gardening and works well in cut-flower bouquets. Best of all, it has an extended blooming period of four weeks or more during the summer months.

Parry’s Century Plant Scientific name: Agave parryi Light requirements: Full sun, or morning sun with afternoon shade Size at maturity: 18”–30” wide; 18” tall It doesn’t actually take 100 years to grow, as its name implies, but it is considered slow-growing. This flowering plant, with spine-tipped, silver-gray leaves that form large rosettes, was recommended by both Harris and Salman. “Evergreens like this have a nice solid structure,” says Harris, “and they’re tolerant of heat, drought and frost.”

Courtesy Waterwise Gardening LLC

Low-water, low-maintenance, drought-tolerant plants infuse your landscape with bright colors and year-round interest—just plant and enjoy. But with dozens, maybe hundreds, of native or adapted varieties available at local nurseries, it’s easy to get overwhelmed trying to decide. We asked two local experts, David Salman, owner/horticulturist at Waterwise Gardening in Santa Fe and Mary Harris, manager at Plants of the Southwest in Albuquerque (which also has a location in Santa Fe), for help in narrowing down the choices. Here are their recommendations.

Ice Plant Scientific name: Delosperma Light requirements: Morning sun with afternoon shade Size at maturity: 15”–18” wide; 1” tall Ice plants, like Red Mountain® Flame and delosperma ashtonii (Blut ice plant), are versatile ground covers with an extended bloom from early to late summer. Although they’re native to South Africa, Salman says they’re well suited to this climate, growing vigorously to carpet your yard in vibrant color that lasts around four weeks.

Ocotillo Scientific name: Fouquieria splendens Light requirements: Full sun Size at maturity: 6’–10’ wide; 6’–16’ tall Flame-red flowers top Ocotillo’s long, spinystems, so it’s not surprising that its name means “little torch” in Spanish. Ocotillo generally blooms in late spring or early summer, and some plants can reach heights of up to 20 feet tall and can survive up to 60 years or more.

Banana Yucca Scientific name: Yucca baccata Light requirements: Full sun, or morning sun with afternoon shade Size at maturity: 4’–6’ wide; 15”–18” tall (flower spikes may add an additional 2–3’); compact varieties spread just 24”–36” wide and 24”–36” tall including flower spikes Easy-to-grow banana yucca produces ivory-colored blooms in the late spring, attracting birds to your yard. It’s extremely drought-tolerant but will thrive with weekly watering. As a bonus, the naturally sweet fruit is edible—it tastes best when roasted and pureed into an applesauce-type side dish or sliced and baked into a pie.

Beaked Yucca Scientific name: Yucca rostrata Light requirements: Full sun Size at maturity: 4’–10’ wide; 6”–15’ tall Beaked yucca can withstand drought and heat, but can also handle the frost, tolerating temperatures as low as -10°F. The yelloworange flowering stalks produce large clusters of white flowers in late spring, while the sharp-tipped, bluish-green leaves repel deer and rabbits.

BEAUTIFUL BATHS: BLENDED STYLES

by Heather Shoning

A peek inside inspiring private spaces Having a peaceful place to begin and end each day is paramount to comfort and relaxation in your home. A well-appointed and luxurious master bath will do the trick. Here’s a peek into the private spaces of six local homes.

Escaping a dark and dated bathroom, these homeowners sought a bright, relaxing retreat with a Zen-like vibe. The end result is a warm, inviting space with Eastern elements in a very Southwestern style. The sleek yet rich-in-color walnut veneer floating cabinetry is a signature of Asian-influenced design, as is the deep soaking tub and pebble flooring in the shower. Contrast these elements with slate flooring and original vigas for a truly unique look. Contemporary touches such as the steam shower and wall-mounted faucets tie the look together. “We made the shower larger and added the tub with views into the courtyard to make the room more functional and to provide a relaxing space,” says Shane Woods of Woods Design Builders. “The entire home is now a beautiful mix of contemporary and Santa Fe styles.” Woods Design Builders woodsbuilders.com

BEAUTIFUL BATHS: MODERN MATERIALS

Form and Function

“Every room, finish and material in the home was designed in the midcentury modern vernacular … form follows function,” says Jodi L. Vevoda, executive vice president of Prull Custom Builders. “The master bath, in particular, was meant to be clean and serene, yet functional.” The underlit his and hers custom floating vanities are a lesson in balance as well as contrast. Positioned on opposite walls, they provide ample personal space, while the rich, dark walnut is in contradistinction to the granite countertops, crisp white vessel sinks and satin nickel hardware. The freestanding 34

oval soaking tub softens the space and provides a relaxing retreat looking out on the surrounding BLM land, while a remote recessed roller shade offers privacy. The large-format porcelain tile on the walls transition to polished concrete floors with radiant heating and cooling. “I love the serene mixing of colors, finishes, materials and lighting,” says Vevoda. “Together they provide a very soft, comforting and inviting ambiance, along with the ample glass, which seamlessly connects indoor to outdoor.” Prull Custom Builders, prull.com

BEAUTIFUL BATHS: TRADITIONAL TOUCHES

Unexpected Gathering Spot When Nancy Abruzzo envisioned her new bathroom, she thought of timeless design and materials and making it functional for two people. She did not think her entire family would use the room, but that’s exactly what happened. “I never knew what would come of the space,” she says. “It’s where we start our day and end our day as a family. Everyone uses it for coffee in the morning, getting ready for the day, music is on, kids prefer to get ready in here. It was absolutely unexpected.” This classic space with room for the whole family has a steam shower, and extra-long and deep bathtub, private spaces for his and hers sinks and a makeup table that receives lots of natural light. The finishes include bevelededge subway tile, travertine floors and rich cherrywood cabinetry. To add a special vintage touch, the wall behind the bathtub features reclaimed mercury mirrors. BEAUTIFUL BATHS: COOL CONTEMPORARY

Serene Sanctuary When Rose Ramirez Brand adopted two young girls, she knew she needed a private space to escape the household chaos and recharge. She called on John Mark Custom Homes to design her new home with this in mind. “It’s not just a bathroom,” says Ramirez Brand. “It’s a whole wing. I wanted relaxation.” The space is complete with a large dressing room, a massage room and steam room. Richly veined marble tops the long double vanity with ceilingheight mirror backsplash. Two grand slabs of intricately variegated marble cover the back wall of the wet room with a brushed stainless tub and double multi-jet showers. A doorway at the far end of the wing leads to a patio with a fireplace for winding down the day. Relaxation mission: accomplished. John Mark Custom Homes johnmarkcustomhomes.com 36

BEAUTIFUL BATHS: TIMELESS ELEGANCE

Simply Elegant This master bathroom bookended by rich wood sliding doors—one to the bedroom and one to the closet—is a fine example of simple elegance. Countertop-to-ceiling mirrored backsplash sits atop white Shakerstyle vanities with warm quartz countertops. The shower surround is 4-by-16-inch white gloss subway tile stacked horizontally. Large-format, concrete-look floor tile in a rich fawn color grounds the space while a flat, multi-color pebble covers the shower floor and runs the length of the bathroom following a flowing, organic line under the vanities and around the freestanding soaking tub. “Overall, the design is very indicative of a Las Ventanas build …,” says Scott Ashcraft, president and CEO of Las Ventanas NM, Inc. “clean lines with modern undertones.” Las Ventanas NM, Inc., lasventanasnm.com SUCASAMAGAZINE.COM

BEAUTIFUL BATHS: TRANSITIONAL WARMTH

Capturing The Views When Kyle and Robin Harder of Harder Custom Builders set out to do a complete remodel and addition on an early 1970s home, they maintained the location of the master bathroom and it’s plumbing. With no nearby neighbors to cause privacy concerns, they focused their attention on capitalizing on the mountain and unending city views with oversized windows. The custom glass shower surround gives the space its open and airy feel while ensuring the views from all angles. They’re even reflected in the large mirror above the double sinks. The finishes in this warm brown palette include porcelain tile, quartzite countertops, Kohler sinks and bronze Moen faucets. The backsplash and shower detail are a copper metallic mosaic tile. magine walking in the front door of your home and being greeted by a picture-postcard view of the Sandia Mountains. That’s the exact experience John and Shawna McKnight have each time they return to their new home in bucolic Corrales. It’s a fitting entrance to a house perched on a gentle slope and designed to maximize the 180-degree panoramas, with sweeping views from the Sangre de Cristo Mountains to the Sandias to the city of Albuquerque and beyond to the Manzano Mountains. “The unimpeded views of sunrises and sunsets never grow old, and the city lights are nearly as breathtaking,” says John. “It’s like our home is a front-row seat to all of New Mexico’s beauty, day and night.”

The 180-degree views stretch from the Sangre de Cristos and the Sandias all the way to the city skyline and the Manzanos.

This comfy chair provides front-row views of the surrounding mountains.

Mountain and modern meet in every space. The sleek sliding doors contrast the richly textured wood flooring.

Originally from Great Falls, Montana, John first moved to New Mexico in the early 2000s while working as an aviation mishap investigator for the Air Force. “I immediately enjoyed all of the similarities here to Big Sky Country, without all the snow and cold,” he recalls. “And I was awestruck with the breathtaking Sandia Mountains.” After retiring in 2011, John returned to Albuquerque, where he met Shawna, an Albuquerque native. Within a year, the couple married and in 2018 purchased a single-acre lot in Corrales. The happily blended family included two adult children, Tristan and Karissa and a granddaughter named Grace; their grandson Jack had yet to be born. With the needs of the whole family in mind, the McKnights were about to launch into building their dream home. The couple worked with local custom home builder Bill Reynolds of New Haven Homes to design and construct the 2,950 square-foot, four-bedroom, two-and-a-half-bath home with a four-car garage. After they addressed existing drainage issues, the project broke ground in October 2019 and was completed in September 2020.

The flooring adds visual interest in the north and south wings of this home thanks to their angled design.

“The style they chose for their home is what we call ‘mountain modern,’” says Reynolds. “The home includes features such as a pitched metal roof, beamed vaulted ceilings and a large stone see-through fireplace.” Indeed, the home combines elements from both modern and mountain-style design. The contemporary color palette, characterized by soft whites and muted grays, is juxtaposed against dark oak flooring with band saw distress markings that provides texture and rustic warmth. The centerpiece of the home, a floor-to-ceiling structure comprised of Texas limestone blocks, encases a double-sided fireplace, asserting a strong mountain-style. On one side of the massive fireplace sits the great room and dining room, including a wine lover’s nook equipped with a refrigerator, countertop bar and stemware storage. With its soaring ceiling and three oversized east-facing windows, this space is the ideal observatory—it brings natural light and the beauty of the surroundings into the home. A few skylights introduce yet more light from above. Funky LED light fixtures and chic steel ceiling fans instill a modern sensibility to the space. “We wanted modern, but not trendy,” says Shawna, who brought all of her creative skills to bear in designing the interior (which helped earn the home a Fall 2020 Parade of Homes “Best Decorating” award). “It was all about balancing clean lines, colors and textures with features that would make it homey and relaxed.” On the opposite side of the stone fireplace, which provides an effective room-dividing function, is an open and spacious kitchen. Cream-colored quartzite countertops, a grand 10-by-4-foot island, crisp white cabinetry and 44

high-end appliances make this space a chef ’s dream. Nearby, stylish sliding barn doors conceal the pantry and a well-appointed laundry room. Two wings that extend off the great room and kitchen create a divided floor plan. The north wing consists of a small entertainment room and a pair of guest rooms that each include unexpected angles and, of course, more windows to capture the magnificent views. Several accent walls are plastered in clay, adding a richness of texture within the rooms. Cool gray, almost cement-looking Italian porcelain tile in the private spaces strikes the perfect contrast to the warm oak flooring of the public areas of the home. The south wing features the master suite. There’s a modest and tasteful bedroom with yet more commanding views through oversized windows and a gorgeous bathroom complete with a modern freestanding tub, radiant floor heating and a pair of Italian marble tile SUCASAMAGAZINE.COM

mosaics that provide tasteful backsplashes for the sinks and vanities. While the views from indoors are amazing, the McKnights also enjoy the indoor-outdoor lifestyle that their home offers. They take advantage of Albuquerque’s temperate climate on their covered back patio with an angled overhang, hot tub and unparalleled views of the Sandias. “The building process was both fun and new, but of course as stressful as you might expect,” says John. “It certainly didn’t help that during the two years from purchasing the lot to finishing the build, we experienced both COVID-19 and the imposition of tariffs on Chinese goods, which affected the cost of many building products.” Ultimately for the McKnights, it was well worth the cost and stress; the couple couldn’t be more pleased with their new digs. “When we wake up in the morning, and when we go to bed at night, we’re still in an almost constant state of awe,” says Shawna. “We’re surrounded by such amazing natural beauty and being here is like camping in an awesome setting—but in the comfort and luxury of our dream home.”

Shawna and John McKnight enjoy the views from their ample indooroutdoor living space.

The first 30 years of the Parade of Homes have been great for builders, prospective buyers and the suppliers who serve our home building community. – John Garcia

Celebrating 30 Years

For three decades the Parade of Homes has been wowing local homebuyers. Home Builders Association of Central New Mexico by John Garcia, executive vice president

T

hirty years ago, the Home Builders Association of Central New Mexico embarked upon an exciting new chapter. The first Parade of Homes event marked the era of providing prospective buyers an opportunity to see the latest design and building techniques, a chance to experience innovative new products and a platform for showcasing fresh ideas in home remodeling. Now, 30 years later, this successful formula continues to draw crowds and delight event-goers. The free parade continues to offer an opportunity for customers to visit a variety of homes across myriad design aesthetics, with knowledgeable and helpful representatives and builder sales teams. “Celebrating thirty years of parade events is a big accomplishment for our builders and vendors and the industry suppliers who make up our membership,” says Mackenzie Bishop, president of the Home Builders Association. “Home builders get a chance to showcase their talents and creative designs while giving customers a chance to talk directly with builders,” he says. Our iconic Southwestern design style remains the envy of the country, embodying our distinctive culture, expansive landscape and the warm palette of our beloved Land of Enchantment. Today, though builders have incorporated the latest trends into their product offering, they remain true to our Southwestern spirit and unique style. Sometimes referred to as the Homes of Enchantment Parade, in celebration of our fine state, the event has been expanded over the decades to a twice-per-year occasion. Our spring event heralds the season of abundance and growth, and the autumn event welcomes the changing leaves against our clear blue skies. Our autumn parade coincides with the world-renown Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta when visitors from all over the globe descend upon our city. After enjoying the incomparable morning mass ascension, visitors and locals alike can enjoy the parade on a sunny fall afternoon. Much has changed since those early days: Black and white photos of busy floor plans have given way to high-resolution photography, rife with enough detail to convey the quality and prowess of our local builders. The novel xeriscaping concept adopted in the ’70s has evolved into an integration of living spaces, both indoor and outdoor. Building techniques have been elevated from pragmatic living spaces to open floor plans and energy conservation practices. The parade has been the best way that builders and remodelers can show off their tremendous work and teach the public about next-generation concepts in the industry. The first 30 years of the Parade of Homes have been great for builders, prospective buyers and the suppliers who serve our home building community. The next 30 are destined to be even better. The Home Builders Association has developed a strong working partnership with Su Casa Magazine, a valued local resource for readers and the trade alike. “Teaming with Su Casa Magazine gives us the opportunity to work on a daily basis with committed professionals who know the business of building and the masterful art of presentation,” says Lana Smiddle, vice president of operations Home Builders Association and Parade of Homes manager. Su Casa Magazine celebrates the artistry of our local building industry and the unparalleled beauty of our New Mexican lifestyle. Let the collaboration of the Home Builders Association and Su Casa Magazine take you on a journey this season, as you enjoy all that the spring parade has to offer. SUCASAMAGAZINE.COM

The Northwest Albuquerque location, near the historic Petroglyph National Monument, is easily accessible from I-40 and Unser Boulevard. Nearby, you’ll find Albuquerque Regional Sports Complex (newly renamed Jennifer Riordan Spark Kindness Sports Complex), hosting football, track and field and other community events. But, by far, the most family-friendly feature of this community is the high-quality homes. You’ll find three different design series with 15 floor plans to choose from, including one- and two-story options. There are a variety of interior and exterior finishes to make your home fit your lifestyle. The flexible floor plans make this community and all its possibilities shine. “Each floor plan has options for personalization and in many, we’ve included flex spaces designed to meet homeowners’ specific needs,” says Camp. You can choose, will it be a home office, gym, in-law suite … maybe all of the above? This flagship community will have 327 homes upon completion. You can explore five model homes: Hewitt and Park Place from the builder’s Apex series of homes, as well as Parklane, Manzanita and Patagonia from the Peak series. These homes range from 1,730 to 3,139 square feet, two to five bedrooms, two to four bathrooms and two- to four-car garages—the possibilities are endless. Prices range from the high $200,000s to the high $400,000s. SUCASAMAGAZINE.COM

Abrazo Homes Delivering an unparalleled client experience by Ben Ikenson

I

n the depths of the 2010 housing crisis, homebuilders Mackenzie Bishop and Brian McCarthy came across what they immediately recognized as “an unbelievable value” to start building in a community called Sundance Estates in the northwest part of Albuquerque. “There weren’t a lot of buyers looking for new homes in 2010, but we knew that the opportunity was there, so we took the plunge,” says McCarthy. That year, the company—Abrazo Homes—sold six homes. A decade later, in 2020, in spite of the pandemic, the company initiated nearly 150 new home closings. “Our mantra is ‘do it right’ and we focus on being better, not being bigger,” says McCarthy. “It seems to have resonated with a lot of customers. We’ve been building in all four quadrants of Albuquerque, plus in the rapidly growing markets of Rio Rancho and Los Lunas.” The founding pair consider Ascension, in the Northeast

Heights, near the International Balloon Fiesta Park, to be the company’s crown jewel. “Building next to one of the most photographed events in the world is a special treat for us, especially since we developed the community in-house and we’re locals. We grew up going to the Fiesta as kids and are now taking our own kids later in life.” Indeed, Abrazo Homes has established itself as a home-grown leader in the local homebuilding scene. Prior to starting the company, Bishop and McCarthy worked together at one of the largest production homebuilders in the state, and that experience armed them with some guiding principles that distinguish Abrazo Homes. They learned that customers value quality materials and workmanship, it’s important to help alleviate clients’ stress during the home-building process, they can differentiate themselves by striving for excellence and that having a professional team will make a world of difference in the clients’ overall experience.

Built-in Amenities

With well-appointed homes ranging in price from the mid$200,000s to $700,000, “our home type is a little ‘extra’ and thoughtful regardless of the market in which we build,” says McCarthy. “At every price point we incorporate tasteful finishes and signature Abrazo details that make the most of the space, the plan and the community.” Common features include contemporary farm

sinks, recessed windows, high ceilings and smart home systems that enable homeowners to control lighting, door locks, thermostat and more from either a smart phone or Amazon Alexa device. “We include TPO roofing on all flat surfaces, LED lighting throughout, luxury cabinetry and millwork and oversized covered patios,” says McCarthy. “And we have eliminated formal dining areas and incorporated large dining and entertaining spaces for a functional open concept.”

A Hometown Team

Understanding that the entire team is key to the business’ success in creating the ultimate client experience, Bishop and McCarthy prioritize their employees. Abrazo Homes was named ‘Best Place to Work’ by Albuquerque Business First for the past three years. “We have the most knowledgeable and professional team in the industry and cater to the customer’s needs throughout the buying and building experience. We know that buying a home is typically the largest financial commitment that our customers will make in their lifetime, and we honor and respect the trust that our customers place in us,” McCarthy says. “It’s not ‘what we do, but how we do it.’ We have a plan for your plan, and we employ the best team in the business to build your new home.” Abrazo Homes, abrazohomes.com 58

hat do you do when you find the perfect lot, with unimpeded views in every direction, but it comes saddled with an intimidating set of restrictions? If you’re Karen Ehrlich, you don’t hesitate. You accept the challenge, and then you conquer it with gusto. When Ehrlich espied a 1.26-acre lot in Santa Fe’s Monte Sereno community, atop a modest rise with eye-popping vistas, she knew it was the place to build. “The property was special,” she says of its enviable sightlines to the Sangre de Cristo and Jemez mountains and the nighttime lights of Los Alamos and Española. All that spacious beauty only five minutes from Santa Fe Plaza. She envisioned a classic Santa Fe adobe exterior embracing a thoroughly modern interior. “I wanted a house with a view,” she says. “I wanted black, white, steel and wood. I’d always wanted to do a ton of raw steelwork.”

“The magic of this house is in what you don’t see, or rather that you don’t see it.” – Karen Ehrlich Ehrlich enlisted Arch Sproul of Santa Fe’s The Virginian Designer/Builder, Inc., to help her bring her dream home to fruition. The decadeslong custom home builder and developer was up for the task, while his son, Stuart, played an instrumental role by 3D modeling the design for review. Ehrlich, under her business K Kaci Designs, has 30 years of styling and interior design experience. So, she collaborated with the Sprouls in the design process and then oversaw the finishes herself.

The sliding window wall connects the family room to the covered patio creating an expansive indooroutdoor living area.

Conquering Immediate Challenges When it came time to put pencil to paper, however, the team learned just how complex their project would be. “There were 200 pages of covenants from Monte Sereno and the city,” says Arch Sproul. There are the usual building restrictions such as constrained lighting to preserve dark skies. But, because the property sat atop an escarpment, there were height limits in effect and above-grade limitations, making the vertical building envelope very shallow and nearly unachievable. “They did that so they don’t have huge houses everybody can see from everywhere,” says Sproul, of the immense effort to keep the Monte Sereno desert looking spacious and natural. The challenges stacked up and one by one, Sproul and Ehrlich knocked them down. First, in scouting the home’s optimal layout, Sproul flew a drone over the site to help maximize views, account for dense tree locations and stipulate drainage. Then, the company hauled away a staggering 200 truckloads of dirt to lower the grade.

Leathered marble countertops and sleek fixtures add to the contemporary design.

Rewarding Results Four bedrooms, four bathrooms and 3,165 square feet later, Ehrlich has her divine abode. Fumed and oiled European oak hardwood floors run wall-to-wall. One wing contains the master bedroom, media room, reading room and the floating stairs, while the other wing houses the guest room, laundry and mudroom. The oversized pivot door, gate, portal and outdoor water feature reflect Ehrlich’s coveted steelwork. The countertops throughout the home are white leathered

Architectural details in a rich wood create a warmth and continuity throughout this home.

marble. And the walls are all the same color for simplicity and visual continuity. “When I commit to my materials, I use them throughout the house,” says Ehrlich. “I design cohesively.” Wood beams— echoed room to room and reflected in floating shelves—lend a touch of Southwestern charm to an otherwise entirely contemporary interior. “The wood really grounds it,” says Sproul. The home is airily crisp, awash in natural light, meant to be invigorating, but without being noticeable. Even the landscaping, a xeriscape designed by Serquis + Associates, centers on being low-maintenance and happily playing second fiddle to the miles of Mother Nature’s grandeur surrounding the SUCASAMAGAZINE.COM

site. “The magic of this house is in what you don’t see,” says Ehrlich, “or rather that you don’t see it.” All these subtleties provide a solid backdrop for Ehrlich’s colorful artwork and, of course, the exquisite beauty of nature framed through every window.

A huge window above the soaking tub capitalizes on the privacy this homesite affords.

Bringing It All Together To meet the required green ratings, the team installed solar panels to offset the effects of the expanses of glass throughout the home—so necessary to capture the jaw-dropping views. This meant adjusting the parapet design to hide the solar panels from view without raising the structure’s height beyond allowance. Meeting height restrictions meant there was only room left over for 11-foot ceilings. To maintain that soaring ceiling feeling and accommodate 10-foot-tall windows, 130 can lights and still harbor HVAC channels, Sproul used some deft tricks. He employed specially designed trusses that allowed for recessed pockets above each window for hidden electric shades and suspended beams to eliminate the need

Arch Sproul took care to ensure views from every space possible throughout the home.

for weight-bearing posts. While that sounds like a lot, the biggest obstacle came from the home’s most unique feature. With such beautiful 360-degree views, Ehrlich felt a rooftop deck was imperative. The hurdle? She wanted to access it from inside the home, requiring a weather-tight passage that wouldn’t raise the roof. Undaunted, they masterminded an elegant solution. A floating staircase rises to the ceiling where, with the push of a button, a glass skylight slides open for access to a rooftop seating area. To boot, the COVID-19 pandemic prevented the skylight manufacturer from sending an installer, leaving Sproul and a friend to decode and assemble it themselves. What a challenge it was. “It had its moments,” laughs Sproul. Yet, having solved this multi-faceted puzzle, both parties came away not only loving the finished product but feeling a deep sense of achievement. Whether relaxing in the home’s artful interior or taking in one of its many endless views, it’s a shining example of what good design work and perseverance can do.

let the sun shine in trends in window treatments

Move over boring old blinds and dated draperies. Today’s window treatments are a sight to behold. Allowing just the right amount of sunshine to filter through, they can create a softness throughout your home. There’s a coverage factor perfectly paired to your indoor activities from subtle light diffusion to complete blackout. In addition to providing an impeccable frame for a grand vista outside the window, they can add a colorful and textural element to your interior design. And they’re not just pretty, these workhorse window treatments help block solar heat gain, protect furniture and valuables and reduce electricity costs. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, a home can lose up to 30 percent of its cooling energy without energy-efficient window coverings. These appealing accents might just be the showstopper in your home. Drapery Draperies remain one of the most versatile window treatments available. Sheer shades beautifully diffuse light to create a soft ambiance, while blackout drapes provide total privacy and darkness. To defer the most sunlight and heat, opt for medium-colored, closed-weave fabric with a room-darkening liner. “The great thing about sheer shades is they come in a variety of luxurious fabrics that contrast nicely with a heavier drapery,” says Karen Wike, owner of I’m The Blind Lady, Albuquerque’s exclusive HunterDouglas Gallery®. “The shade and drapery combination, frankly, creates depth and interest.” To further reduce heat gain, close east-facing shades and draperies just before bed to eliminate early morning sun and in the late afternoon if you have western sun exposure. 88

Shades Fabric and roller shades, also called solar shades, are a perfect solution for controlling glare, heat and UV rays that result from problematic reflective landscapes and west-facing windows. Today’s re-engineered roller shades offer more insulation and more significant light control. For the strongest light control, a fabric’s openness factor—tightness of its weave—can range from 5 percent to total blackout. The shades are available in inventive fabrics such as recycled options like the Greenscreen Sea-Tex® collection from HunterDouglas. Along with HunterDouglas, leading solar shade brands include Insolroll, Qmotion and Mecho Shade—all carried by Albuquerque’s JC Blinds.

HunterDouglas’ Designer Roller Duolite® Shade comes in a variety of colors to fit any room.

The Designer Roller Duolite® Shade, exclusive to HunterDouglas, is an engineering breakthrough that combines a lightdiffusing sheer fabric and an opaque roomdarkening liner on one roller. Designed to match any decor, Duolite® Shades come in 24 fabric choices with an assortment of textures and colors. Truly noteworthy shades include the HunterDouglas’ Duette® Honeycomb window shades that diffuse light and provide extraordinary, energy-efficient comfort by trapping air in distinct pockets to help keep houses cool in the summer and warm in the winter. Window Films Essentially sheets of tinted plastic, Low-E films are emerging as an energy-saving option and are most useful for homeowners who don’t want to block views with window treatments or who have uniquely shaped windows. This is a great option to protect artwork, furniture or carpeting that could fade due to prolonged UV exposure. Films can reduce heat intake by 70 percent and come in an array of options, including tints, UV blockers, reflective options, thicker films for security and antiqued or crackled finish if you want to kick it up a notch. Additionally, when considering window films, be sure to check with manufacturers for warranty information. Exterior Solar Screens An alternative to awnings, exterior solar screens can reduce heat gain, UV damage and glare. They look similar to regular insect screens. And just like their interior counterparts, they are available in roller and fixed panel options.

terrific tablescapes In the era of intimate family gatherings as opposed to large parties, you can still make the spring holidays—and pizza night—special with a carefully curated tablescape. With a little creativity and a lot of layering, your dining table can rival even the best couture kitchen catalogs. Take these tips from the experts to design your next culinary celebration. Bring on the Texture A tablescape needs texture—it adds dimension, elevating a table setting from flat to fabulous. Layering materials is a great way to mix and match textures and colors. Put a table runner on top of a tablecloth. Because a runner won’t interfere with place setting stability, there are more possibilities for textural materials. Try muslin, bamboo or hemp. These raw materials not only add subtle pattern but also create an organic look. “You can’t go wrong, taking design cues from nature,” says Annie O’Carroll of Annie O’Carroll Interior Designs in Santa Fe. “Nature is classic and balanced.” Planning a more formal table design? Use a velvet table runner or scarves for a dramatic textural effect. O’Carroll recommends steering clear of items you’ll have to remove. “A table shouldn’t be so crowded that it’s unusable. You need to be able to serve and guests need space to maneuver.” Consider using chargers for more than the desired layering effect. Choose a charger material—woven rattan, stone, lace—that incorporates textural elements. 92

Give your tablescape a Southwestern feel with a collection of cacti.

With a little creativity and a lot of layering, your dining table can rival even the best couture kitchen catalogs.

Glass candle holders in varying heights add a beautiful lightness and warmth to a centerpiece.

Crystal Clear “Using glass gives another opportunity for dimension in your design detail,” says interior designer Patty Hoech, owner of Patrician Design in Albuquerque. The presence of fresh, clear water evokes a sense of revitalization, plus the translucence of glass allows the color or pattern of a table runner to read through, she adds. Glassware can also become a design element O’Carroll says. If you have them, mix and match colored glassware. Different shaped glassware also adds dimension. Square vases or glasses flanking a centerpiece creates a nice visual balance. Get Fresh A spring tablescape calls for fresh flowers or live plants. You can approach flower selection from different angles. “Flowers offer a tremendous array of color choice,” says Hoech. Use your favorite flower or what’s readily available for inspiration when choosing your table-top color palette. On the other hand, the dishes you use may dictate a floral direction. “If you’re using white dishes, you can really choose any color palette,” says O’Carroll. If your vision includes bright, vibrant colors, spring bouquets with a rainbow of colors—those pair perfectly with white dinnerware. For a natural contrast, add fresh splashes of spring green, interspersing small potted plants, herbs or succulents. Pro-tip: Purchase flowers that aren’t fully open. On the eve of your event, if they haven’t bloomed to your SUCASAMAGAZINE.COM

liking, hydrating them in slightly warm water forces bloom, says Hoech. Conversation is Key The golden rule of tablescapes is to make sure centerpieces and flower arrangements don’t impede conversation. No one wants to lean around a large centerpiece to chat with someone across the table. If you’re set on long stem flowers, opt for a horizontal orientation rather than vertical. Run them across the top of the table, says O’Carroll. There’s no hard-and-fast rule that flowers must be arranged in vases. Don’t shy away from asymmetrical designs, she adds. “It can be fun to do something that’s out of proportion.” Rather than one gigantic flower arrangement as a centerpiece, strategically group vases of varying sizes together, using fewer flowers. Because a flower vase doesn’t have to be a vase at all, O’Carroll suggests using items you already have: Glassware, carafes, buckets and pitchers make unexpected display pieces. Use what you love—colors, textures, florals—to design your tablescape. And remember: It’s not just for holidays. You can treat every dinner as a cause for celebration! A spring tabletop design begs for fresh flowers in bright colors.

celebrated nationally, loved locally fifty years of Corrales pottery heritage

All photos courtesy Hanselmann Pottery

Tucked away in Corrales, a pottery studio has been steadfastly producing stoneware for 50 years, cultivating an ever-broadening national customer base while maintaining its small-town roots. Founded in 1970, Hanselmann Pottery began hand-making stoneware, from plates and mugs to oven-ready cookware and decorative pots. As ownership changed over the decades, their methods morphed, at one time foregoing the potter’s wheel for mold-made pottery. But a decade ago, Luke Parker bought the business and hired James West as head potter. West redesigned the product line and reverted production back to

“Our design choice of white glaze over stoneware was informed by our audience.” – Jessi Penrod wheel-thrown pottery. Manager Jessi Penrod sees this reversion as a boon. “It’s a more rustic aesthetic, more artisanal. It takes more time and training, but it’s less limiting,” she says. “We don’t have to make a mold for it; we can make a piece then and there. There is more opportunity for creativity and new items.” The potter signs each piece, adding a personal touch. For now, all the pottery comes in white. “Our design choice of white glaze over stoneware was informed by our audience,” says Penrod. “It fits in everyone’s kitchen. We wanted to keep it simple, to fit well in any setting.” Their audience, vast and dedicated, loves it. Hanselmann’s pottery is sold in galleries from coast to coast. Coffee shops, both local and far-flung, serve beverages in Hanselmann mugs. And consumers can’t seem to get enough of the unassuming designs. By far, their bestselling item is the quirky thumb cup. Hundreds sold over the holidays. It’s a simple cup—sans handle—that bears its potter’s single thumb indentation and has won hearts everywhere. Local barbers use them, as the indentation makes for a secure grasp on a slippery shaving cream vessel. And the studio has received letters of gratitude from disabled customers who, suffering difficulty grasping typical handles, are so grateful for the easily gripped design. As a testament to its community roots, Hanselmann’s uses the honor system in their shop. Even when the studio isn’t operating, the shop remains open so shoppers can use the self-checkout system to buy pottery. A lovely demonstration of faith in humanity from this local gem. hanselmannpottery.com SUCASAMAGAZINE.COM

An organic farm fills New Mexico bellies and grows its own industry When Monte Skarsgard went to college, he had no premonition of how much he would change farming and consumer food habits in New Mexico. Enrolled at the University of California, Santa Barbara in the mid-1990s with a focus on landscaping, he often saw farmers markets and roadside stands selling organic foods. Intrigued, in 2000 Skarsgard entered an organic farming apprenticeship at the University of California, Santa Cruz followed by a work stint on a Seattle CSA farm. That’s where his “aha” moment happened. Wouldn’t his hometown of Albuquerque benefit from a CSA? A CSA, or community-supported agriculture program, connects farmers and consumers through a subscription service, bringing fresh food to local tables and giving farmers a reliable outlet for their products. Consumers buy freshly harvested foods weekly, supporting nearby farmers and circulating dollars within the local economy. Skarsgard saw an opportunity, ripe for the picking. He found Los Poblanos, a working farm in the North Valley, pitched them about farming on their land and in 2003 launched Los Poblanos Organics, later renaming the company Skarsgard Farms when his business outgrew the original space. Albuquerqueans were ready for it. “We got one hundred customers our first year,

Su Cocina which rose to three hundred and thirty,” he says. “It was a very quick acceptance of the model.” Skarsgard started by networking with New Mexico farmers for seasonal fruits and vegetables for customizable harvest boxes, evolving from pick-up to home delivery service. Gradually, that network grew. Local meats, dairy and bakery products were added, as well as select out-of-state produce, like citrus fruits and avocados, and eventually an array of homemade prepared foods such as dressings, soups and desserts. “If customers mentioned it and it made sense, we’d go find those vendors,” says Skarsgard. More recently Skarsgard Farms joined the meal kit movement, with a Southwestern flair. Unlike other meal kit services, Skarsgard offers New Mexican dishes— think tacos and tamales—accompanied by locally grown chile. Because, as he puts it, in New Mexico “you put chile on everything but your toothbrush.” Skarsgard built a thriving farm-to-consumer framework to help farms grow and consumers eat more healthfully, always on the lookout for the next beneficial partnership. Skarsgard products—available wholesale— are also on many a restaurant menu. It’s a win-win endeavor, elevating the organic food industry and improving diets across the state. To complete the buying experience, Skarsgard Farms now offers everything necessary to run, clean and feed a household. From dish soap to toothpaste, eggs to cookies, radishes to rhubarb—all delivered to your doorstep from a one-stop, organic shop. “It’s a concrete, tangible food system with a diversity of goods that you don’t see in a lot of states our size,” says Skarsgard. “It’s very genuine.” And very much now a part of our culture. skarsgardfarms.deliverybizpro.com

gardening made easy work with the land, not against it, for a lush New Mexican garden

Best Plants for New Mexico Gardens and Landscapes Keyed to Cities and Regions in New Mexico and Adjacent Areas, Revised and Expanded Edition, by Baker H. Morrow, University of New Mexico Press, paperback, $35.

Choose the right plants to achieve the lush garden you desire.

102

S U C A S A S P R I N G 2021

Whoever came up with the phrase “work smarter, not harder” must have been a gardener. After reading the second edition of Best Plants for New Mexico Gardens and Landscapes Keyed to Cities and Regions in New Mexico and Adjacent Areas, Revised and Expanded Edition, I’m convinced it was coined by author Baker H. Morrow. Morrow’s thesis is this: A lush, productive garden is possible in any part of New Mexico, you just have to work with the land you have, not against it. That means choosing plants that require the least amount of resources for the area. “Plants in the far south do not feel at home in the far north, and northern species do not like many hot southern locales,” Morrow says in the book. “…In short, it is good to remember that a place as geographically diverse as New Mexico has many differing kinds of natives.” The book covers all the gardening bases, starting with soil. Can we just talk about soil for a minute here? The right soil is the key to any garden or landscape, whether ornamental or veggie-producing, and Morrow writes at length on the importance of amending your soil if needed and how to balance a highly acidic soil. I know this all sounds really nerdy, but please don’t skip this part. You’ll be rewarded with a highly productive garden. There’s also some important information about setting up irrigation, which will help you to properly hydrate your plants without going overboard. For new gardeners and those who have been gardening for years, this book highlights the right plants for Albuquerque and Santa Fe gardens, as well as for gardens throughout the whole state. Morrow has tips for choosing the right plants for your garden, from making sure your have varying heights to the right texture to finding plants that can add whimsy and nostalgia, as well as landscape design ideas. The book’s plant selection chapter is divided into easy-to-understand sections, down to which type of oak tree works for certain areas. Morrow’s book doesn’t merely offer suggestions on what looks pretty in the yard—it’s a blueprint for how to create a gorgeous, productive landscape that works for your yard, no matter if you’re in the high desert or the high plains of New Mexico.

these satisfying wines bridge the gap between winter and summer

Spring awakens changes in the earth and in ourselves. The weather is temperate one day, blustery the next. It effects our routines, what we wear, eat, ergo, what wine we drink. Here’s the dilemma: The whites and rosés—so ideal for the dogdays of summer—may be too light and zesty; a winter’s red— too deep and dark for this season. What’s needed are wines of refreshing acidity yet robustly satisfying.

Just Winging Through

by Amy Gross

love is in the air

’tis the season for baby bird-making In spring, as transitory birds are migrating through New Mexico, our resident birds are busily preparing for parenthood. Breeding season typically begins around March and continues through the summer. You’ll know it’s happening when the birdsong around you changes from idle feathered chitchat to a riot of fulltime, joyous chorusing. Males who have lost their drab winter feathers now sport brightly colored breeding plumage. Dressed to impress, they perch conspicuously in treetops to sing their hearts out and find girlfriends. Once a love match has been made, nest construction begins. A hummingbird mother does all the work herself (including raising the babies), while raptors, finches, thrashers and other birds work as a couple to build their nests. Usually, they’re constructed in trees and shrubbery, sometimes even in cholla bushes, but some birds set their sights on houses and other man-made structures. This can either be a source of delight for the homeowners or a headache, particularly if the nest blocks passage through the front door, is wedged into an outdoor light fixture or is precariously perched on a windowsill. Oftentimes birds will realize belatedly that they’ve built their nest in a bad spot and move along to try elsewhere before laying eggs. But not always. When I first moved into my home in Santa Fe, house finches tried relentlessly to nest in hanging flower baskets left behind by the previous owners, with disastrous results. To combat their efforts, I designed triangular nesting platforms that fit into the corners beneath our two portals. We love watching feathered couples animatedly “discussing” whether

one of the platforms might be a suitable place to raise their clutch. If you’re eager to draw nesting birds to your house or yard, nesting platforms, nesting boxes or bird houses may be the way to do it. If, on the other hand, you’d rather gently discourage birds from nesting near your house, block cavities and entry points such as dryer and chimney vents, and eliminate ledges offered by light fixtures and portal beams so that nests cannot gain traction there. Just remember that it’s illegal to disturb or damage a nest with eggs, so you’ll want to humanely prevent nesting in the first place. Witnessing a clutch of chicks growing up may make you feel like a proud surrogate parent. One day the five babies you’ve watched for weeks will become three; a few days after that, they will have all left the nest. It’s a bittersweet, but beautiful, feeling. While you can drive from the main house down the hill to the guest house, gym and pool, they wanted a pedestrian path as well. The couple turned to David Howard of Chamisa Landscaping, who they have worked with for more than 12 years.
