Celebrating 30 Years
For three decades the Parade of Homes has been wowing local homebuyers. Home Builders Association of Central New Mexico by John Garcia, executive vice president
T
hirty years ago, the Home Builders Association of Central New Mexico embarked upon an exciting new chapter. The first Parade of Homes event marked the era of providing prospective buyers an opportunity to see the latest design and building techniques, a chance to experience innovative new products and a platform for showcasing fresh ideas in home remodeling. Now, 30 years later, this successful formula continues to draw crowds and delight event-goers. The free parade continues to offer an opportunity for customers to visit a variety of homes across myriad design aesthetics, with knowledgeable and helpful representatives and builder sales teams. “Celebrating thirty years of parade events is a big accomplishment for our builders and vendors and the industry suppliers who make up our membership,” says Mackenzie Bishop, president of the Home Builders Association. “Home builders get a chance to showcase their talents and creative designs while giving customers a chance to talk directly with builders,” he says. Our iconic Southwestern design style remains the envy of the country, embodying our distinctive culture, expansive landscape and the warm palette of our beloved Land of Enchantment. Today, though builders have incorporated the latest trends into their product offering, they remain true to our Southwestern spirit and unique style. Sometimes referred to as the Homes of Enchantment Parade, in celebration of our fine state, the event has been expanded over the decades to a twice-per-year occasion. Our spring event heralds the season of abundance and growth, and the autumn event welcomes the changing leaves against our clear blue skies. Our autumn parade coincides with the world-renown Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta when visitors from all over the globe descend upon our city. After enjoying the incomparable morning mass ascension, visitors and locals alike can enjoy the parade on a sunny fall afternoon. Much has changed since those early days: Black and white photos of busy floor plans have given way to high-resolution photography, rife with enough detail to convey the quality and prowess of our local builders. The novel xeriscaping concept adopted in the ’70s has evolved into an integration of living spaces, both indoor and outdoor. Building techniques have been elevated from pragmatic living spaces to open floor plans and energy conservation practices. The parade has been the best way that builders and remodelers can show off their tremendous work and teach the public about next-generation concepts in the industry. The first 30 years of the Parade of Homes have been great for builders, prospective buyers and the suppliers who serve our home building community. The next 30 are destined to be even better. The Home Builders Association has developed a strong working partnership with Su Casa Magazine, a valued local resource for readers and the trade alike. “Teaming with Su Casa Magazine gives us the opportunity to work on a daily basis with committed professionals who know the business of building and the masterful art of presentation,” says Lana Smiddle, vice president of operations Home Builders Association and Parade of Homes manager. Su Casa Magazine celebrates the artistry of our local building industry and the unparalleled beauty of our New Mexican lifestyle. Let the collaboration of the Home Builders Association and Su Casa Magazine take you on a journey this season, as you enjoy all that the spring parade has to offer. SUCASAMAGAZINE.COM

Soft music drifts from indoors through the wide-open sliding glass doors leading into your gathering room. Every now and again, you hear the laughter of children playing at the neighborhood park, and you can see hints of twinkling lights from downtown Albuquerque as dusk falls. This is what life in New Mexico is all about — embracing indoor-outdoor living, family gathering spaces and outdoor activities. This is life at Inspiration. This Signature Community by Pulte Homes is designed with families in mind. is the heart of Inspiration—what gives it such a familyfriendly feel,” says Calysta Camp, marketing specialist for PulteGroup New Mexico division. The Northwest Albuquerque location, near the historic Petroglyph National Monument, is easily accessible from I-40 and Unser Boulevard. Nearby, you’ll find Albuquerque Regional Sports Complex (newly renamed Jennifer Riordan Spark Kindness Sports Complex), hosting football, track and field and other community events. But, by far, the most family-friendly feature of this community is the high-quality homes. You’ll find three different design series with 15 floor plans to choose from, including one- and two-story options. There are a variety of interior and exterior finishes to make your home fit your lifestyle. The flexible floor plans make this community and all its possibilities shine. “Each floor plan has options for personalization and in many, we’ve included flex spaces designed to meet homeowners’ specific needs,” says Camp. You can choose, will it be a home office, gym, in-law suite … maybe all of the above? This flagship community will have 327 homes upon completion. You can explore five model homes: Hewitt and Park Place from the builder’s Apex series of homes, as well as Parklane, Manzanita and Patagonia from the Peak series. These homes range from 1,730 to 3,139 square feet, two to five bedrooms, two to four bathrooms and two- to four-car garages—the possibilities are endless. Prices range from the high $200,000s to the high $400,000s. SUCASAMAGAZINE.COM

Abrazo Homes Delivering an unparalleled client experience by Ben Ikenson
I
n the depths of the 2010 housing crisis, homebuilders Mackenzie Bishop and Brian McCarthy came across what they immediately recognized as “an unbelievable value” to start building in a community called Sundance Estates in the northwest part of Albuquerque. “There weren’t a lot of buyers looking for new homes in 2010, but we knew that the opportunity was there, so we took the plunge,” says McCarthy. That year, the company—Abrazo Homes—sold six homes. A decade later, in 2020, in spite of the pandemic, the company initiated nearly 150 new home closings. “Our mantra is ‘do it right’ and we focus on being better, not being bigger,” says McCarthy. “It seems to have resonated with a lot of customers. We’ve been building in all four quadrants of Albuquerque, plus in the rapidly growing markets of Rio Rancho and Los Lunas.” The founding pair consider Ascension, in the Northeast

Heights, near the International Balloon Fiesta Park, to be the company’s crown jewel. “Building next to one of the most photographed events in the world is a special treat for us, especially since we developed the community in-house and we’re locals. We grew up going to the Fiesta as kids and are now taking our own kids later in life.” Indeed, Abrazo Homes has established itself as a home-grown leader in the local homebuilding scene. Prior to starting the company, Bishop and McCarthy worked together at one of the largest production homebuilders in the state, and that experience armed them with some guiding principles that distinguish Abrazo Homes. They learned that customers value quality materials and workmanship, it’s important to help alleviate clients’ stress during the home-building process, they can differentiate themselves by striving for excellence and that having a professional team will make a world of difference in the clients’ overall experience.
