The Journal family of publications is proud to announce the acquisition of Su Casa Magazine, New Mexico’s premier home magazine. For more than 25 years, this locally owned magazine has showcased stunning residential projects throughout the state. “We are excited to continue Su Casa’s legacy of high-quality photography, writing and design,” says Journal publisher and president William Lang, “and will continue to take you into unique and showstopping homes throughout Albuquerque, Santa Fe and much of the Land of Enchantment.” As in the past, Su Casa will publish four times a year — in spring, summer, winter and fall. This, our inaugural issue, features the latest in bathrooms and the spring Parade of Homes. The purchase of Su Casa means it joins the other Journal sister publications, the Valencia-County News Bulletin, El Defensor Chieftain in Socorro, the Rio Rancho Observer and the Albuquerque Journal. Whether you are planning a remodel or a new purchase, or just looking to spruce up your home with new decor, Su Casa has always provided inspiration and a treasure trove of ideas and resources for readers. We look forward to continuing that tradition, while engaging with our readers, advertisers and the Home Builders Association of Central New Mexico to bring you the high-quality magazine you have come to expect. Enjoy!

Life+Style Southwest light it up! Outdoor spaces should be an extension of the home. So when these homeowners wanted a lovely space to enjoy the evening, this shade tree became its focal point. “We wanted to highlight the natural shape of the tree with the uplighting,” says Joseph Barnes, Yellowstone Landscape’s marketing director. “They can go out on a cool evening and enjoy the outdoors.” To give the homeowners a useful patio that wouldn’t be hard to maintain, Barnes says the company incorporated native plants that will handle the elements. These lovely ornamental grasses and potted plants add color and texture, without overwhelming the landscape. Yellowstone Landscape, yellowstonelandscape.com

first impressions what your front door says about you

Who knew a front door had so much to say, especially in New Mexico. “Your front door makes a statement about you,” says Shannon White, vice president of Santa Fe Door Store Inc. “It’s the first impression you make on people who walk up.” From the pragmatist to the modernist to the Old World soul, “front doors serve as a metaphor for your life,” says Melissa Coleman, owner of La Puerta Originals. They represent passing from the external world “into your own inner sanctuary.” Both long-standing, family-owned local businesses have seen entry doors evolve over the years. But one thing that hasn’t changed, per White: “People tend to be very passionate about their front doors. It’s where they often run over budget.”

24

S U C A S A S P R I N G 2020

“Today people are almost craving that which is authentically old,” Coleman says. “There are so many massproduced products out there.” All of La Puerta’s doors are handcrafted from reclaimed wood and repurposed lumber at their local mill and workshop. The result is a highly customized, Old World-style popular among the well-off and well-traveled — their niche. Some of these doors run up to three inches thick, making them both durable and safe. “You can’t kick in three inches of solid wood,” Coleman says. As for price point, “most basic doors run from $8,000 to $10,000, which includes hardware and glass,” and go up from there.

“Front doors serve as a metaphor for your life.”—Melissa Coleman

Made with salvaged lumber and inlaid with antique carved fragments, this door by La Puerta Originals is both rustic and modern. The windows are set with custom iron grillwork.

old world

Meanwhile, contemporary architecture is making itself known around the state. “With the modern movement, we’re seeing more pivot doors, oversized doors and clear material versus knotty material,” White says. “People want more exotic American hardwoods, like rift-cut (vertical grain) walnut and oak.” Their entry doors run $2,500 and up. The color of your front door also says something about you, adds White. A red door says welcome. A white door says clean and serene; a blue door says prosperous and grounded. A black door symbolizes order and control. Orange is vibrant and exciting. Gray is intelligent and dignified. Green means health and community.

utilitarian

For some, front doors are more utilitarian — all about function, durability and security. That’s right up the alley of Pella Window and Door. Most of their doors are made of fiberglass, and occasionally steel. “Fiberglass accommodates multiple stains, paint and molded wood grain,” says Jim Dundon, general manager of Pella Window and Door’s regional office in Albuquerque. “It looks just like wood from two feet away. Plus, it’s more durable, it won’t crack or split from the environment,” sparing the

expense of high maintenance. As for safety, “our doors feature a multipoint locking system,” Dundon says. “When you lift the handle, three bolts lock into place along the side, bottom and top of the door.” In addition, any window in or around the front door features builtin security via Pella’s Insynctive smart technology. These are hidden security sensors built into windows that allow remote monitoring for those with smart living technology in their homes. Pella’s entry doors run $800 and up. The right entry door will welcome guests happily into your home.

home stagers share insights for a successful sale

Karl Horodowich Photography

Selling your home is an emotional process. It can bring about all kinds of feelings: excitement for your new home or chapter, anxiety about selling your home, sadness about moving from where your family grew or frustration with the moving process.

One way to help allay any negative feelings about selling your home can be to work with a home stager. A home stager helps sellers create an objective, yet desirable, space that will appeal to as many buyers as possible. “If you’ve decided to sell your home, you need to emotionally divorce yourself from the home, and do the things necessary to sell the home,” says Edgar Marroquin, owner of ABQ Home Staging, adding that staging is not interior design; it’s marketing. “We’re going to come in and create the best image of your home for buyers. You have to showcase the positive aspects of the home and minimize the negatives.” Some sellers believe they will save money if they stage their home themselves or skip this step altogether, but that can be a costly mistake, says Trish Tilley, co-owner of All About Staging in Albuquerque. Tilley says the first impression is everything — six seconds is all it takes for buyers to decide if they like a home — and if you lose potential buyers, a home can sit unsold for weeks, or longer. That can lead to price reductions. “The best time to hire us is prior to listing,” Tilley says. “Sometimes we get calls from Realtors or their clients when their home has been on the market for several weeks. … The investment for a vacant staging engagement is usually far less than the first price reduction that the Realtor may recommend.” Mindy Abramson, owner of Distinguishing Style and the only Certified Staging Professional (CSP) in New Mexico, agrees that sellers can lose money by trying a DIY method to staging. “If you want to lose money, you don’t need my help, you can lose money by yourself,” she says. “But often my clients get 10 percent to 20 percent more of the original price of the home than

they ever thought they could” because of her services. Abramson works with sellers still living in their homes. Tilley says that stagers help sellers put their best home forward. “It’s about creating desire and temptation — not letting another buyer make an offer before you can,” says Tilley. “Let’s face it: selling a home is a competition. We believe that tasteful staging will help it stand out in a positive way.”

finding your green thumb soil preparation is key to a vegetable garden’s success

A successful garden will yield tasty results that are also nutritious.

T

he quest to grow a thriving vegetable garden begins well before the first seed is put in the ground. Gardening experts agree that soil preparation is not only the first step; it’s the most important step to a green garden. Daniel Schwery, plant pharmacist at Osuna Nursery, says one of the biggest mistakes gardeners make, especially beginners, is not prepping their soil. He says no matter where one lives in the Albuquerque area, the soil lacks the proper nutrients for a garden. Schwery says adding nutrients to the soil and letting it sit for a while makes for better growing conditions. “The soil here really lacks the organic material needed for growing almost anything,” he says. Jericho Nursery owner Rick Hobson says the soil consistency varies in the Albuquerque area, but none are ideal for gardening. The Valley has clay, and residents near the Sandias deal with granite. Hobson now lives in the North Valley, but lived for many years in Rio Rancho, where most of the soil is sand, which does not retain water. “I would water, and it was like I never put any water,” he says. “I would say, ‘Where is it? Was it abducted by aliens?’” Amending his soil, Hobson says, allowed him to grow vegetables. He adds that the book Down to Earth: A Gardener’s Guide by Albuquerque Area Master Gardeners is an invaluable tool that covers several topics, including soil composition in the Albuquerque area. It can be found in local nurseries and bookstores. Schwery says potting soil, peat moss or any composted manures will add the needed elements to the soil. He recommends adding 50 to 100 pounds of soil for every 100 square feet of garden. It should be tilled about six to eight inches deep. If you will be growing root crops such as carrots, potatoes and radishes, the garden will need a foot.

28

S U C A S A S P R I N G 2020

Ensuring your soil has the right nutrients and consistency is important for a sucessful vegetable garden.

“You are getting a personal education: problem solving, spending time with your family and connecting with nature.”—Dane Elias In addition, Dane Elias, horticulturist for Plant World, says growers should not be afraid to do periodic liquid feedings throughout the growing season, adding that water-soluble fertilizers work well. Another option is placing vegetables in raised beds or planters. Elias says they can be made of various materials, including stone or wood, if they have adequate drainage. Planters should be at least 18 inches deep. “In these conditions, you are able to improve the soil to a high-performance level,” Elias says. “They are also easier to harvest because they are elevated, and they can be an architectural statement in your yard.” The downside to raised beds, Hobson says, can be cost. Raised beds can be expensive, but those who are handy might be able to build their own at an affordable price. How to plant vegetables is important, but when to plant them is also crucial, Hobson says. He says there are two vegetable seasons — cold and warm. Cool season vegetables, such as lettuce, spinach and broccoli, should be planted in early spring. Other vegetables should be planted about midApril to early May, after the nights will no longer reach freezing temperatures. “April 17 is the average last frost date in Albuquerque,” he says. “May 10 is the last recorded frost date.” Hobson says almost any vegetable can be grown in New Mexico under the right conditions. Popular choices include tomatoes, peppers, squash, cucumbers, carrots, radishes and broccoli. At the end of the day, planting a vegetable garden offers many advantages. “You are getting a personal education: problem solving, spending time with your family and connecting with nature,” Elias says. “You are getting high-quality food, and expanding your culinary skills. You start looking for ways to cook all these vegetables you are growing.”

resources Osuna Nursery Jericho Nursery Plant World

Q+A with

Daniel Schwery, Osuna Nursery Why grow your own vegetables? It’s very, very fun to do. It’s very rewarding. You get much more variety when you grow your own vegetables. You have a wide selection of vegetables available to plant, and you can choose what you want. The taste is different. A lot of the vegetables you see in the stores are large. We’ve made them larger and larger, but they have little flavor. The ones you grow at home may be smaller, but they are so flavorful. What can you do to keep the pests away? One of the best ways you can help your garden protect itself is to stop using insecticides. When you use a chemical pesticide, you are killing everything in your yard. But there are insects out there that eat insects that we don’t want. Two that we do want are ladybugs and green lacewings. The ladybugs primarily focus on aphids. A single ladybug eats 50 aphids a day. Green lacewings are a much more voracious eater than ladybugs. They will eat spider mites, scale and will also eat aphids. They can eat over 100 aphids a day. Sap-sucking insects, like aphids, can destroy your plants. But they also usually carry diseases they can pass on to your plants. With that being said, there is a time and a place to use a chemical control. When there is an outbreak so bad, that is where chemicals come into play. Sometimes there are not a lot of natural predators you can buy and place in your yard to kill unwanted pests. When and where is the best time to plant? The best time for planting is fall and spring. You can plant during summer, but it’s extremely stressful for the plants because of the heat. You might not have as much success. Where you plant in your yard is important. I suggest sticking them in a place where they can get shade for part of the day. Most plants will have a tag indicating whether they can take full sun. If they say they can get full sun, they will probably be fine, but keep them watered. What are the best vegetables for this area? Beans and tomatoes do excellent. Chiles do very, very well, but most people don’t realize they require a little bit of shade. However, because of New Mexico’s long grow season, you’re not really limited on what you can grow here. Most leafy vegetables are cool season plants, and should be done in the spring or fall for the most part. Anything that’s tropical will have a hard time growing here. Citrus just won’t take our winters. We’ve tried to bring in seeds that will do well in this environment, that will do well in our climate. SUCASAMAGAZINE.COM

BEAUTIFUL BATHS: ELEGANT AND CONTEMPORARY

one bright space

Wendy McEahern

Woods Design Builders Architect Salomon Velasquez designed the cabinetry in this master bath after early New Mexico furniture pieces. The result is an airy and bright master bath in this Santa Fe home with a mix of modern and traditional styles that is timeless. The double slipper tub was strategically placed to take advantage of the home’s gorgeous views. “You can soak in the tub and look at the city lights or take in the morning light over Santa Fe,” says Velasquez. The tub’s simple elegance blends easily in the bathroom, giving it a contemporary feel. The most important element of the bathroom, Velasquez says, is the natural light that comes in through the windows by the bath, as well as skylights, making for a clean and bright space. BEAUTIFUL BATHS: OLD WORLD CHIC

When Dianne and her husband built their home, they chose a Mediterranean style, but wanted a cohesive look throughout. So to match the copper farmer’s sink in the kitchen, she chose a striking copper clawfoot tub for the master bath. Ordered from India, the tub is not only striking; it’s roomy too. “My husband is six-foot-three, and he fits in the tub just fine,” Dianne laughs. “But it is one of my favorite elements of the home. It’s something that we both look forward to on the weekend—to have a nice relaxing tub to soak in.” The lights set in the mirror are essential for getting ready for the day, says Dianne. “Those really worked out great for me.” Cabinets: Craig Sowers Custom Cabinets; Countertops: Arizona Tile 32

Northern New Mexico architecture is the epitome of Southwest design, as evidenced by this rustic bathroom with touches of the Land of Enchantment. First, there’s the gorgeous view of the Sandia Mountains and the Bosque that can be taken in from the Signature Hardware soaking tub, different from clawfoot and slipper tubs. Second, there’s the unique soaking tub, set into wood frame legs. Melinda Bowen, vice president at Joe Boyden Homes, says it matched the cabinetry perfectly, and fit well into the rustic feel of the bathroom. Rather than opting for stark white countertops, the tan granite countertops are a simple, yet clean, addition to the space. Opposite the tub is a gas fireplace and encased shower, giving this bathroom a touch of luxury. Builder: Joe Boyden Homes; Granite: Arizona Tile SUCASAMAGAZINE.COM

“I call it zebra tile,” laughs Marty Zimberoff of his master bathroom’s starring tile. “It’s really pretty; we get a lot of positive comments on it.” When Zimberoff and his wife, whose home is located in Northeast Heights, saw this tile, they instantly knew it would work in their master bedroom and bathroom, a contemporary space with a walk-in shower with bench and a floating vanity with a gray and black granite countertop. The shower’s flooring is made of black stones set into white grout, making for easy maintenance. The vanity mirror extends all the way to the ceiling, making the space feel larger and more open. Another highlight of the master bath is the skylight above the shower, which makes the space feel even more luxurious. It’s no surprise that the marble in this bathroom was the inspiration for the space. The homeowners liked the marble, so New Haven Homes designed the shower to showcase the stunning stone. Bill Reynolds, New Haven Homes’s president, says building the shower was tricky because of the technical skill required to match the seams and patterns in the marble. “United Stoneworks spent about a week perfecting that,” says Reynolds. But the result is a stunning double-entry shower, with glass subway tile, bench and a remote-controlled skylight. The bathroom is not only nice to look at; it doubles as a pool bathroom, as there is an entrance to the home’s pool area, making it functional for the homeowners. BEAUTIFUL BATHS: MODERN FARMHOUSE

“We wanted sleek and clean lines, and a minimalist approach to this space.” —Ashley Lawrence

maximally minimalist

“We wanted sleek and clean lines, and a minimalist approach to this space,” says Ashley Lawrence, director of operations at RayLee Homes, of the master bath in this home in the Rio Compuesto community in Corrales. A modern farmhouse style throughout, this bath has a touch of industrial style, with its soaking tub surrounded by 12-inch-by-24-inch tiles made to mimic concrete. To keep the space from feeling dark, and to add subtle elegance, RayLee chose polished nickel fixtures, white cabinetry and cream Calacatta Silestone countertops. A large sliding transaction window by the tub ensures plenty of natural light, giving the space an airy and vibrant feel. With two separate vanities, the bathroom has plenty of storage space for any spa necessities. world travelers settle on a Corrales Southwesternstyle green home

T

ucked near the end of a quiet road in Corrales, Evan and Belinda Rael finally found a serene lot on which to build a new house. After 13 years of living abroad (four in Argentina and nine in Qatar), three grown children flying the coop and with Evan preparing for retirement, the couple found themselves casting about for a place to call home. Evan, a graduate of New Mexico Tech and a now-retired petroleum engineer, hails from New Mexico. Belinda “grew up all over,” but affectionately calls Alaska home. After some consideration, they settled on the Land of Enchantment, where Evan has family. They found a two-acre lot, close to the river, where seasonally migrating cranes gather in droves. “Belinda wanted to be close to the bosque, someplace green, with trees,” says Evan. “That’s why we chose Corrales.” It’s not far off the beaten path, but feels more remote than it is. Once they had the lot secured, they needed a builder. A close friend recommended Norm Schreifels, owner of Sun Mountain Construction. Schreifels has been building custom homes in New Mexico for 33 years and is well acquainted with Corrales. Sun Mountain’s standard, Schreifels says, is that “every home is a green built, energy efficient, healthy home. Period.” The Raels knew they were in good hands. They were ready to design their house, but were still living in Qatar. So the determined trio

commenced a long-distance enterprise. The majority of decisions were made electronically, with Belinda finally moving to Albuquerque last summer to oversee the final stages, while Evan stayed in Qatar. “They were away a lot,” says Schreifels. “Evan was overseas. He didn’t see the house at all between framing and completion. There’s a lot of trust in that long-distance relationship.” There were several priorities at play for the home. “We wanted a big outdoor area,” says Belinda, “and to stay with the Southwestern theme of Corrales.” Also of importance were warm colors, lots of light, views and a casita for guests, in-laws, or later, possibly a caretaker. The final design detailed a three-bedroom, three-bathroom, 3,800-square-foot main house with a 750-square-foot casita. The pueblo-style exterior blends into the neighborhood, while the interior presents a sedate Southwestern look. “It has a Southwest feel, but it’s not over the top,” says Schreifels. “It’s vibrant.” Schreifels and his crew completed the home to align with the Fall 2019 Parade of Homes, after which the Raels finally moved in. Based in Houston before going overseas, they had put all their belongings into storage before they moved. “Then, overseas, we collected stuff,” says Evan. Much to their joy, they’ve found that the furniture and décor picked up on their international travels mix beautifully with their home’s Southwestern aesthetic. As they unearth their well-traveled treasures, pieces from far-flung places like India, Qatar and South Africa merge beautifully. It’s eclectic, yet cohesive. Entering at the front door, the eyes are drawn upward to a lilac-centered soffit, surrounded by cattle brand symbols. “My family were ranchers,”

says Evan. “It’s a longtime New Mexico family, the Raels.” Three of the brands belong to his uncle, grandpa and dad. Nick Harmon, of Fresco Harmony, who applied his proprietary finish to the entry ceiling, bedroom and other spots in the home, had the idea to personalize the entry with the cattle brands, which the Raels loved. Commanding attention is Belinda’s centerpiece. “I wanted a red island,” says Belinda, “So, I got a red island!” Topped with black granite, the island serves them well for entertaining. “For Christmas we do a big cooking thing, so the family is all in there working,” says Evan. A second island serves as a bar and buffet, and provides extra storage. The great room, kitchen and dining room culminate in inset, wood-clad ceilings with wood beams, a tasteful New Mexican theme. Below, the wood floors have a charming, aged look. “We wanted something warm and distressed,” says Belinda. Both the main house and the casita open to the pool and covered patio spaces. An array of seating areas, delineated by a fireplace and outdoor kitchen, are perfect for parties. One day toward the end of the project, the Raels discovered a surprise gift from Schreifels on the patio. Taking a cue from Harmon, Schreifels had Evan’s three family cattle brands crafted in steel and installed over the fireplace. Touched, 44

Belinda’s vanity station is one of their daughter’s favorite features. A claw-foot tub is a luxurious addition to this master bath.

Belinda says, “I was almost in tears.” “We were thrilled,” Evan agreed. A spacious master suite hosts impressive views. “It’s very dark and quiet at night, the stars are out,” says Belinda. “It’s crazy beautiful.” In the bathroom, a curved bank of windows mimics the arc of the walk-in shower. Across from the his-and-hers sinks is Belinda’s dedicated vanity station, one of their daughter’s favorite features. A free-standing tub offers a relaxing soak over a glass of wine. In the other wing, a media room with blackout blinds, the only carpeted room in the house, makes for a sound-proofed movie theater. Just down the hall, two guest rooms share a Jackand-Jill bathroom with lovely mosaic tiling. While the home may feel traditional, behind the scenes it’s fully modern. They can run the electric blinds, as well as a host of other smart features, from their cell phones. Not only did the Raels score a beautiful home, but they came out with a new friend. “It was really smooth,” Belinda says of working with Schreifels. We had a good experience.” Schreifels says of Sun Mountain, “at this stage in our building lifecycle, most of my work is from referrals. We’re very hands on, very detailed. Most of my customers still hang out with me with after the job. We’re friends.” Every morning, Belinda and Evan get to open their bedroom blinds and look out onto that unique bosque landscape, with shady trees and wildlife, and enjoy the quietude, happy in their new abode.” SUCASAMAGAZINE.COM

45

Talk about leisurely living! The home’s patio has a pool to keep cool or for exercise, as well as an outdoor living room, complete with gas fireplace and TV.

Every morning, Belinda and Evan open their bedroom blinds and look out to the unique bosque landscape.

What a great way to enjoy the scenery and the outdoors. This outdoor patio makes indoor-outdoor living easy, and is ideal for entertaining. 46

ust southeast of the Tijeras Arroyo lies the last major masterplanned community on the east side of Albuquerque, Juan Tabo Hills Estates at Volterra. The highly amenitized community is conveniently located to major thoroughfares like I-40, health care options and the popular Albuquerque Uptown area, with upscale shopping, dining and entertainment. It is also ripe with opportunities to take in the natural areas all around. From Cibola National Forest and open space that’s closed to vehicular traffic, the community is a great place to live and to stay active, no matter the age or fitness level. “The southern boundary abuts Kirtland Air Force Base, so you get views of the Sandia and Manzano mountains,” says Rex Wilson, developer of Juan Tabo Hills Estates, along with codeveloper Scott Grady. “But it’s not a gated community, so you have trails, and three acres of parks along those trails. The main walking trail has some very nice amenities.” Wilson says there will be approximately three acres of parks throughout the community that will be built along the main walking trail. Four builders offer homes in the new community: Paul Allen Green Homes, D.R. Horton, Pulte Homes and RayLee Homes: A New Generation. Each offers single-family homes ranging from 1,400 square feet to approximately 3,500 square feet. Homes include custom rock walls, as well as tile roofs. Many of the homes have two- to three-car garages, as well as single- and two-story floor plans. Some builders in the community offer green homes; Paul Allen Green Homes, for example, builds homes that include low-water use appliances and fixtures and sustainable building materials. Homes in the community range from $270,000 to $490,000. At completion, this final phase of the Volterra community will have 330 homes, and will include a mix of housing for active adults, as well as families and singles. Wilson says the community is popular with buyers; homes started selling in September 2019, and already one-third of the homes have sold. That’s ideal if buyers plan to sell later, he says. “The demand for the east side is high. The community is a very stable community and has great resale value,” Wilson says. The community has a homeowners association (HOA) that offers security that actively patrols the community. Proximity to Sandia Labs and other major employers mean an easy commute for homeowners. Living in Juan Tabo Hills Estates means you don’t have to sacrifice a natural environment for one that’s close to the best of what Albuquerque has to offer.

Twilight Homes building family homes with community in mind by Adrian Gomez photographs by Fotovan

This $292,990 home in Rio Rancho’s Mountain Hawk community features Twilight Homes’ Questa II floor plan.

Building community—this is what Vinny Pizzonia and Tim McNaney specialize in. After decades of building homes, in 2000 the pair founded and are the owners of Twilight Homes in New Mexico. As one of the largest local builders, the company has closed more than 100 homes in the past year, according to Joe LaMendola, vice president of Sales and Marketing for Twilight Homes. “Vinny has been building homes for 42 years,” LaMendola says. “Vinny and Tim are local, and they understand what it means to create a community.” Twilight Homes has communities in Albuquerque, Rio Rancho and Santa Fe, and all are diverse in range and scope. Joya Escondida, an infill project, is the sole Albuquerque community for Twilight Homes. LaMendola says the gated community feels quiet 54

and removed, yet close to everything. Close-by attractions include Old Town, Nob Hill and the ABQ BioPark Zoo and Botanic Garden. “You drive through this older community,” he says. “Then you get to the gates and enter, and it’s what you would think of Old Albuquerque. It’s really beautiful because the design is taking into account the historical legacy of the area.” The community has 11 floor plans that range from $227,900 to $299,990. LaMendola says building in Joya Escondida, Twilight Homes wanted to make a different imprint with the community and use it as an infill project. “Everything is being sold on the Southwest Mesa,” he explains. “We wanted to get something closer to Old Town and Downtown. That’s why we searched out this specific area. It’s close to everything and becomes a part of the surrounding community.” Rio Rancho is where Twilight Homes is making its biggest imprint in New Mexico. With four communities — Mountain Hawk, Lomas Encantadas, Tierra del Oro and Mariposa — LaMendola says there’s a model that will suit every need. SUCASAMAGAZINE.COM

Mountain Hawk is located near Unser and U.S. 550 and has access to the outdoors. There are views of the Sandia Mountains and easy access to getting outdoors. “We’re minutes from grocery stores and all of the restaurants, as well as the many brew pubs,” he says. “It’s a great community because it’s accessible from Interstate 25.” With 10 floor plans to choose from, homes range from $225,900 to $292,990. “This community really offers tons of affordability,” LaMendola explains. “It’s a rare combination because of the location.” Lomas Encantadas has six floor plans available that range from $252,990 to $349,990. Tierra del Oro is one of the newer Rio Rancho communities and is located near Northern Boulevard and NM 528. The community has 16 floor plans that range from $235,990 up to $355,990. Mariposa is one of the biggest communities, and has 13 floor plans that range from $237,990 to $469,990. “The goal for each community is to give a sense of home,” LaMendola says. “It’s where you want families to interact and grow together. These locations in Rio Rancho are important, because this is also where development is strong.” In Santa Fe, the communities are Cielo Azul and La Potencia. Cielo Azul is in Santa Fe’s growing south side. It’s close to NM 599 and Interstate 25. The community features the EOS Series of new homes and are green built. There are eight floor plans that range from $285,990 to $378,990. Meanwhile, La Potencia is also located in Santa Fe’s south side and features 22 lots with 14 floor plans for buyers to choose from. These homes range from $399,990 to $532,990. The homes are also green built. “We build everything from affordable first-time homebuyer to million-dollar custom homes,” LaMendola says. “We aim to add to the community with quality homes for New Mexicans.” Twilight Homes, twilighthomesnm.com

ome things are just meant to be. Erica Jorgensen had been eyeballing a halfacre lot for sale, just around the corner from her home in a gated neighborhood in Los Ranchos de Albuquerque. Tucked into the side of a cul-de-sac, the pie-shaped property abutted an open space where geese and cranes wander, and mature trees dot an otherwise unbroken view of the Sandia Mountains. It was on the market for quite a while. She’d even called to inquire about it a couple of times, daydreaming of its potential. But each time, she passed on it. Then, in late 2018, in a serendipitous conversation with her friend David Waszak, the

tables turned. Waszak, owner of Waszak Design + Build Enterprises, has been building custom homes for 29 years. He, too, had noticed that lot. Hoping to build a home designed to celebrate the gorgeous locale, he’d shown it to one client after another. No takers. “It was a beautiful lot,” he says, “but it was hard for clients to see that.” That pie shape wouldn’t sell itself. As Jorgensen and Waszak verbalized their appreciation for this special lot, an idea hatched. “We said, why don’t we buy it and put a spectacular home here,” says Waszak, “as a joint venture?” It wasn’t a stretch for Jorgensen. Her father is a general contractor, and she and her family own Sound & Signal Systems of New Mexico, Inc., a commercial, low-voltage electrical SUCASAMAGAZINE.COM

contracting company. Their experience would mesh well together. And while the lot might be a tough sell by itself, they felt confident that topped with the proper spec home, someone would snap it up. On Christmas Eve 2018, Waszak completed the home design in a single sitting. Days later, they closed on the property and, in the truest sense of the term, their speculative venture began. Both ardent fans of the urban farmhouse concept, the duo elected to start with that foundation. Robust steel beams, crisp glass and dark windows set in pale stucco nudge this steadfastly farmhouse exterior into contemporary territory. To best proffer the views, Waszak stair-stepped the anterior, featuring a classic farmhouse façade amid a series of copper, pitched roofs. The fourbedroom, four-bathroom, 3,700-squarefoot abode frames a backyard pool and patio. A heated “bonus room” off the garage opens to the pool, with potential as a home gym or guest quarters. Inside, square beams echo a pitched ceiling trestle. High triple windows flood the room with light. The breakfast nook benches, media cabinet and concrete fireplace banco all “float,” keeping things airy.

Above: The kitchen is an open space with lots of storage and custom touches, like the cabinets painted in a custom blue that Jorgensen created, and cabinet-paneled refrigerators.

Engineered white oak flooring retains a rustic undertone, a warm accent against clean, modern lines. An outsized island topped with a monolithic slab of quartz anchors the kitchen colors. It’s difficult to name the striking blue hue of the upright cabinets. “The blue is a color I made up,” says Jorgensen. “I’d had that color in my head and, of course, you can’t just get it. So, we went to three different paint stores to have it specially mixed.”

Both ardent fans of the urban farmhouse concept, [David Waszak and Erica Jorgensen] elected to start with that foundation. Waszak’s family in Ohio are cabinetry crafters, so all the cabinets were custom made and shipped in. The tailored, tonal wood complements the layered styles throughout the home. Jorgensen chose light fixtures, handles and faucets in a warm gold finish. Sedate, not brassy. Instead of simply using grout on 96

the marble tile wall behind the kitchen sink, Jorgensen cleverly set gold Schluter trim between the tiles. Barely visible, it contributes a beautifully executed, very restrained hint of gold that’s more of a feeling than an obvious accent. Flanking both sides of the sink are matching, cabinetpaneled refrigerators, one of which, Jorgensen jokes, is dedicated to her teenage son’s appetite. Facing the pool area, a tri-fold kitchen window allows for food passthrough and conversation while entertaining. A hand-forged hood wrap oversees a Thermador range sizable enough to balance against the massive island. While open and spacious, the home is still skillfully defined. Waszak designed thoughtfully useful, stationed spaces. “I think that’s what he’s a master at, defining the spaces,” says Jorgensen. “He really thinks about living in the space.” For instance, as a transition between the living room and the master suite, he created a snug seating area. Centered around a petite fireplace, it’s a semi-private stopover, roomy enough for two chairs and perfect for unwinding with a nightcap. “He has a vision, and then along the way he molds it. During the framing process he walks through, and he feels, and he thinks, and he tweaks. He’s an artist.” Just as they suspected, by building the right home, a buyer

did appear, surprising both. Midway through the project, Jorgensen decided it had to be hers. “Through the process I fell in love with it,” she admits. “Plus, my kids got invested.” Her daughter helped stake the lot, and her son helped smooth the foundation, making it a family affair. Neighboring houses sit just steps away, but the floor plan is so artfully executed that from any window or patio the home feels secluded. “When we first moved in, I felt like we were on vacation,” says Jorgensen. Indeed, the landscaping purposefully fades into an open space that feels like a continuation of her own yard — a retreat in nature.

A freestanding tub in the master bath sits inside a walk-in steam shower.

Would they do it again? Maybe. But if so, “I promised him I wouldn’t buy the house again,” laughs Jorgensen.

ig cities are great, but there’s something to be said for small New Mexico villages that know how to live big. Take Ruidoso, a mountain resort town of around 10,000, just a three hours’ drive from Albuquerque. Once just a small ski and gambling destination, Ruidoso is a growing, hip place with charm enough for small towners and big city folk. Named for the river that runs through it, and located in the Sacramento Mountains, nature is all around. It’s not uncommon to see elk, deer, even turkey, roaming around town. So, just a drive through town is enough to entertain those who just need a breath of fresh air, but there’s plenty more to enjoy. For more nature, with a curated twist, visit the Hondo Iris Farm, where you’ll find irises, yes; but also, a small art gallery too. The farm hosts an iris festival each May. If you want to try something new, disc golf might be an option. Ruidoso is quickly being recognized for its disc golf courses, easily some of the best in New Mexico. There’s a total of 81 holes in Ruidoso, and a new course on Moon Mountain designed by professional disc golfer Eric McCabe will be ready in May. The village has put a lot of investment into Grindstone Lake, making it an ideal spot for families. The lake used to be solely for fishing, but can now be enjoyed by boaters and swimmers, alike. A floating water park is a hit with kids, while adults can paddleboard. If the outdoors aren’t your thing, there’s still plenty for you to do in SUCASAMAGAZINE.COM

The Spencer Theater hosts world-class performances in its $21 million facility.

Ruidoso. Catch world-class performances at the Spencer Theater. The $21 million facility is host to Broadway shows, as well as national recording artists. And, when there’s not a performance, you can view the largest collection of Chihuly glass in the Southwest. Even if you’re not into gambling, it’s still worth visiting the Ruidoso Downs Race Track to see the majestic horses here. The racetrack has earned plenty of accolades, hosting the prestigious All American Futurity, and plenty of national winners have raced here. Again, you don’t need to bet any money to watch the races, so it’s a great way to pass the afternoon with family and friends. History buffs will enjoy Fort Stanton and Lincoln, both just a short drive away. Both areas are ripe with history, thanks to

the Native American peoples of the area, such as the Mogollon, the Piros and the Mescalero Apaches, as well as a famed kid named Billy. There’s also the American Museum of the West that encapsulates the spirit of the American West, with an interactive display to keep kids entertained. Along the main road — that’s Sudderth Drive — you’ll find antique shops, art galleries, souvenir shops and other boutique shops to satisfy any shopping needs. The local shops will give you a taste of local artisans’ work. There are also plenty of restaurants when you need a break from shopping. It’s time to discover Ruidoso all over again. With activities for everyone, it’ll be hard to resist visiting again and again.

Janet and Robert Carson are owners of the Oak Tree Cafe. He started the original Oak Tree with his parents in 1985.

f you have been to Oak Tree Cafe a few times, there is a good chance that owner Robert Carson already knows your order. Taking the time to know each guest has been one of the keys to success for Oak Tree Cafe, which opened in 1985. “I remember who they are because over here you can’t just take their order, you’ve just got to remember the people that come in,” Carson says. “We’re not a franchise. We’ve got to say hello, thank you, have a great day, what can I do for you. You need to know their names.” Carson opened the restaurant’s first location on San Mateo with his parents, Michael and Sarah Carson. There have been several moves over the years — from San Mateo to Downtown to Uptown to Menaul, and now to its current location on Alameda, which Robert Carson opened with his wife, Janet. Loyal customers have followed. “I have had customers that have followed me since the ’80s, and what’s ironic is they were young children at that time and now they’re adults and they’re coming in with their children,” Carson says. “And sometimes I can look out on that floor and see at least 10 to 15 customers a day from the ’80s here. They have followed me from Downtown to here, from Uptown Boulevard over here. (We have a) very loyal following.”

“We’re all about freshness, definitely local. Even today most of the recipes and ingredients are the same that we used in ’85.” —Robert Carson

Left: The Monty Hall — turkey breast, New Mexico green chile and melted pepper jack and cheddar on a baguette — is a big seller at the Oak Tree Cafe.

Oak Tree Cafe did not develop its clientele solely on its customer service. Its fresh and organic food offerings had something to do with it. “We’re all about freshness, definitely local,” Carson explains. “Even today most of the recipes and ingredients are the same that we used in ’85. We still continue to use local chiles, local bakeries, high-end meats, which a majority we cook here in the kitchen. Our roast beefs are cooked here. Our corned beefs are cooked here. ... We make our own salad dressings here. Right now we’re at 99.9 percent organic vegetables, lettuce and everything like that.” Patrons pack the house on Friday nights for the restaurant’s fish and chips. Fresh haddock is beer-battered in house and served with a side of house-made coleslaw and a tartar sauce. Oak Tree Cafe is also popular for its sandwiches, salads and burgers. “The Monty Hall (sandwich) has always been a big seller,” Carson says. “It’s a turkey breast sandwich with New Mexico green chile, pepper jack cheese, cheddar cheese on a baguette, with lettuce and tomato. That’s always done well for us, and we also have our Extreme, which is our own roast beef that we cook here with the green chile, provolone, on a baguette with au jus.” When it comes to burgers you cannot

Inspired by Nature: Creating a Personal and Natural Interior, by Hans Blomquist, Ryland Peters & Small, hardback, $26.

ould I be lying if I said I didn’t attempt to make a lovely bouquet of fresh wild mustard flowers for my mom after reading Hans Blomquist’s Inspired by Nature: Creating a Personal and Natural Interior? Absolutely. By the way Blomquist speaks of nature in the book — and the influence it has had on his design style — one could not help but be enthralled with the nature around them, even the “weeds.” Influenced by a childhood appreciating the natural world, Blomquist explains that everything in nature can beautify the home, from wasps’ nests (without the wasps, of course!) to bird feathers to branches with withered leaves and flowers. “Some of the best things in life are free — especially everything that comes from nature,” he writes. “There is such a treasure chest out there in every season, but particularly in spring when the natural world around us simply erupts into leafy greens and delicate blossoms, and it is all there for us to enjoy on a country walk or when driving through the countryside.” If you want to bring the outdoors indoors, it’s easy enough to simply go outside and find the right item to create the mood you want to evoke, Blomquist writes. There’s no need to overthink the process, simply choose one natural element you like and then build around it. Go big or go small — it’s your home and you know what works best. But, if you want more curated examples from which to start, Blomquist includes a variety of homes that embrace a natural style in vastly different ways, from a rustic and

106

modern home in Marrakech to an American wooden farmhouse. The book hails nature as the ultimate design element, as well as vintage items, such as old work benches and rusty metal pieces. Natural textures, such as suede lampshades, can elevate an otherwise sterile space into one that is both livable and breathable. This book is a great reminder to readers both in rural areas and in concrete jungles to stop and smell the flowers (even if they are weeds) and appreciate every bit of nature around them. —Patricia L. othing sets a birder’s heart aflutter like the prospect of spring migration, which starts in midFebruary and runs into early June. In New Mexico, where our birds tend to be of the LBB (“little brown bird”) variety most of the year, spring migration brings some welcome color into our trees—and our binoculars. Most of the birds migrating into, or merely passing through, New Mexico are headed northbound from Central America and Mexico, offering fleeting glimpses of gorgeous tropical hues. So who’s just passing through, and who’s staying? The impossibly beautiful cedar waxwings are among our first early spring temporary guests. Watch for them flocking in berry-bearing trees and enjoying the sunshine. Evening grosbeaks and red crossbills will be passing through, too. In late spring, Western and summer tanagers make thrilling appearances, showing off their bright yellow and red, and all red coloring, respectively. The Bullock’s oriole is an impressive and hard-to-forget bird, its orange and black body accented with a dramatic white wing splash. The secret to attracting tanagers and orioles? Put out orange halves (cut side face up) and grape jelly. ¡Salud!

a rosé by any other name

R

osé, the pink-hued stepchild of wine, has only recently emerged as hip, enjoyable, even serious. There’s a lingering misconception all pink wine is sweet, like those marketed as white zinfandel or blush. But Americans who love wine understand what commonly appears on shelves and wine lists are dry, crisp and refreshing. What is rosé, exactly, how is it made and what are our options? Rosé is made from red grapes, taking its pinkish tint from brief contact with the skins during maceration, a process of crushing grapes. That juice is drained from the skins before getting dark. Also, to intensify flavor and aroma in the production of red wine, winemakers may draw off liquid to increase the ratio of juice to skin. The byproduct becomes rosé. This method, with a pretty French name, saigneé (“sohnyah”), grimly translated as “to bleed,” produces a finer, complex rosé. Another technique is vin gris (“van-gree”), in which a red grape is crushed and juice is immediately separated, producing a mere trace of color, which the ancients called “gray.” Blanc de noir Champagne is a kind of vin gris. These processes create a broad range of tones from coral, pale salmon, orange-pinkish to nearly ruby. Most are called

rosés, but some may be labeled Vin Gris (Birichino 2018, Asian pear; orange zest), or Gris de Gris (Domaine de Fontsainte 2018, raspberry, chokeberry and citrus). Generally, rosés should be quaffed young, within two years, but those from the Bandol region in the south of France will hold for years (Chateau de Pibarnon 2018; suave, spicy and deeply expressive). Such diverse regions and profiles make rosés an attractive, year-round pleasure. As Kay Thompson sings in Funny Face, the 1957 Hollywood musical, “If you want that quelque chose, think pink!”.

Adios

“The portal has beautiful, sweeping views with great sunsets,” says Salomon Velasquez, architect with Woods Design Builders in Santa Fe. That’s why he designed this space with no obstructions like railing or fencing. “You usually don’t go out to the portal to stand,” he says, “you go out to sit with a cup of coffee in the morning.” The tumbled brick, with soft edges, and wood beams lend to the natural feel of the space. The almost 1,000-square foot porch is primed for entertaining, with an outdoor kitchen and viga fireplace, and a nighttime scene that’s as stunning as the morning views. “Once it goes dark, you can see the city lights, and it’s just an amazing view.” Woods Design Builders, woodsbuilders.com 112
