Townsville.

Capital of Northern Australia. THE WATERFRONT PROJECT Townsville is embracing its historical links with the water’s edge. Townsville City Council’s vision for The Waterfront will encourage the community and visitors to recognise and enjoy Ross Creek as a central element of our cityscape, and acknowledge the rich maritime history of the city as a port. A team of local specialists will join forces to design the first stage of the landmark Waterfront Promenade project along Ross Creek in Townsville’s CBD. SMEC Australia Pty Ltd will design Stage 1A of the Promenade project which is the centrepiece of the Townsville City Waterfront Vision. SMEC Australia, which has had an office in Townsville for 10 years, will head up a design team that includes local companies with experience on The Strand and Jezzine Barracks redevelopments. The $1 .1 million project will design boardwalks and pathways linking the existing facilities on the creek side of Museum of Tropical Queensland and Reef HQ, along Flinders Street East to the George Roberts Bridge at Denham Street. Creating a vibrant cultural precinct in the heart of the CBD is an important part of The Waterfront vision, and council has recently sought expressions of interest in constructing and leasing purpose-built arts and cultural facilities. This will be a multi-year transformational high priority project for Townsville. The plan includes a new art gallery, library and concert hall that will enhance our capacity to host national and international exhibitions and performances. The high quality facility will attract large numbers of people, and increase inner city visitation by locals and visitors - providing stimulus and helping to attract new developments, businesses and retailers.

CBD ACTIVATION A key component to any major global city is a vibrant CBD, and council is working with local businesses and community groups to deliver a series of events and activities for Townsville residents, workers and visitors. Along with this year’s anniversary celebrations,

Townsville’s city heart will come alive with a number of activities, including The Glencore Percival Portrait Painting Prize, Townsville 400 Super Street Party, Luxlumin – Lighting in the City, T150 Embedded at Umbrella Studio and Chinese New Year Celebrations. Planning and Development Director Graeme Bolton said that council’s initiatives and continuing private investment and activity is transforming the city centre. “Council is actively pursuing initiatives and partnerships that will help to set economic conditions conducive to the healthy and sustained growth of our city and our CBD. “We are seeking to build local and tourist visitation rates that will attract a wider range of businesses, retailers and professional service providers to the CBD, as we strive to position Townsville as a modern, contemporary city - a city that is recognised as a leader in innovation and lifestyle,” Mr Bolton said.

INVESTING IN FOOD INNOVATION AND THE CREATIVE INDUSTRIES Townsville City Council was the major sponsor for the highly successful Economic Development Australia Northern Queensland Food Innovation Forum earlier this year. International presenters from Japan, USA and New Zealand described the global growth of innovation in the food industry and a Master Class Breakfast was a great opportunity for local and regional food industry businesses to gain knowledge about using commercialisation and collaboration to drive innovation in Northern Queensland's food and agribusiness industries.

As Townsville celebrates 150 years since being named as a municipality, the city continues its vibrant transformation into a contemporary and progressive regional capital.

Council has also released the ‘Growing the creative industries in Townsville’ report, and a group of Creative Industries professionals will now work to raise the profile and promote the capabilities of businesses in the region. A North Queensland Makers’ Forum will be held as a part of the Townsville Fashion Festival in May, and connect Townsville’s creators and craftspeople with the momentum of the global makers’ movement and the potential for the industry to contribute to local business opportunities and jobs.

JOBS AND INVESTMENT PACKAGE

ENGAGING OUR INTERNATIONAL PARTNERS TO DEVELOP THE ECONOMY

As Townsville is increasingly positioned as a global city and the Capital of Northern Australia, it’s an exciting time to be part of this evolution.

An exciting event in June will see Townsville host the T150 Townsville Sister Cities Mayoral Forum featuring presentations from all six of Townsville’s Sister Cities – PNG’s Port Moresby, Shunan and Iwaki in Japan, Chinese cities Changshu and Foshan, and Suwon in South Korea. The event is being combined with the Asia Pacific Market Forum which will provide businesses an opportunity to gain first-hand knowledge about developing trade relationships and investment in these markets.

This program continues to assist in stimulating the Townsville CBD with McDonalds Ogden Street completed and the City Arcade Stage II (Woolworths) project well underway. While the Central Piccadilly 1 project is yet to commence, two other eligible projects with detailed plans in place are the City Point mixed-use development that will rework the existing Woolworths site on Sturt Street and an exciting concept for new dining experiences on Mariners Drive.

THE

WEDDING RING

Dreams OF MY

TOWNSVILLE FIRE PLAYER CAYLA GEORGE’S PATH TO FINDING THE WEDDING RING OF HER DREAMS WAS A LONG ONE, BUT CERTAINLY WORTH THE WAIT. “All along, we planned for JBD to design and custom make my wedding ring,” Cayla explains. “Their jewellers knew the design I had in mind and we were set to go ahead, until a sudden family health situation meant we had to bring forward the wedding date.” Cayla said in the rush to hold the wedding they purchased a lovely ring, but it was not “the ring” she had always dreamed of. “Three days after our wedding we went to the United States and it was there that I found a ring style I immediately fell in love with! It was completely different to the design I had originally wanted, so I sent it straight to Bevan at JBD and asked if they could recreate a similar design with some of my own personal touches.” “The jewellers created the most stunning version from the original design and I am absolutely thrilled with the end result. I’m really glad that I waited now because I have ended up with the most beautiful ring and it is all thanks to the amazing team at JBD, they assisted me every step of the way.” “Almost a year after our wedding I finally ended up with the ring of my dreams,” beams Cayla.
