Persuasive speech is the ability to create change in another person by using natural, human speech. Persuasion is both an art and a science. It is an art because it requires the creative application and use of thoughts and words. It is a science because there are hard facts and formulas behind persuasion, and because master persuaders must also be aware of the science part of the equation in order to be really successful in persuading other people. The two components of persuasion should come together so that you will always be ready to persuade people no matter what the situation. So whether you are trying to persuade someone to go to the doctor or you are trying to persuade an administrator that you are indeed correct about your decision to do something, you will always be on top of the situation. Changing points of view Persuasion is not always about adding facts or information to an argument. Changing facts is not really our concerns as persuasive speakers. We are actually more concerned with changing points of view and valuations of subjects and objects. We are not overly concerned with replacing what people know with what we know. Of course, you can do that, too, but as you can imagine, if you havent persuaded a person at all, it will be hard to convince them to believe in your own hard facts. So in the grand scheme of things, persuasion comes first, before you present a different set of facts. So how will you be able to change a persons valuation of things? Lets say that Person A is earning $32,000 a year and is happy with this yearly income figure because he is spending more time with his kids and wife. Now lets say that you want this person to invest more time into a new business because you need a partner. How will you convince Person A to change his viewpoint? One approach is to tell Person A that although he is spending more time with his family, his family would be happier if he brought home more disposable income. That is just one approach to this problem. How will you re-frame situation so that the other persons point of view will be changed? Persuasiveness and mood One of the most important things that you should remember about persuasion is that you have to
be aware of the current state of mind and the current emotional state of the other person before you begin the persuasion process. This is key. After understanding the emotional state of your audience, you can proceed with trying to use that emotional state to your advantage. For example, if you are trying to convince someone to buy a different brand of soap, you should be able to utilize her current emotional state regarding her current brand to your advantage. Simply put: you want to alter the other persons emotions so that she will be less resistant to the persuasive message that you want to give her.
