Yes, its true: Candida can be a symptom of leaky gut syndrome. Leaky gut syndrome occurs when the lining of the intestines becomes so inflamed and irritated that it cant do its job properly. The intestinal lining starts to leak, allowing bacteria and other toxins to enter the bloodstream. Your immune system has to work overtime fighting these toxins, leaving you vulnerable to other infections such as Candida. Leaky gut syndrome is not taught in medical school and is therefore not thought of as an underlining problem by some doctors. Many health care professionals, however, do recognize this syndrome and attribute a wide range of unrelated symptoms to it. In addition to Candida, other symptoms can include fibromyalgia, gluten intolerance, muscle cramps, food allergies and sensitivities, and even acne. Candida is a fungus that just about everyone has in small amounts in their system. These small amounts are usually not enough to spark an infection. But once the delicate balance between good and bad bacteria in your intestines is disturbed, the Candida fungus takes advantage and begins overrunning certain areas of your digestive tract. Many times antibiotics are the culprit for disturbing the balance of your intestinal microbes. They do not discriminate when attacking bacteria and can kill the good bacteria in your intestines along with the bad. As a result, your system may be exposed to resistant bacteria, fungi, parasites, and viruses that a healthy, balanced gut can keep in check. When the bacteria levels shift towards the more harmful bacteria, the result can be irritation, inflammation, disease, and the growth of a common microbe like Candida. Once the Candida has established itself, it becomes invasive and produces root-like structures called rhizoids that can push through the mucous membranes or your intestinal walls. This damages the villi, which are finger-like projections along the intestinal tract. In turn, this allows undigested food particles, toxins, and bacteria to move through the lining and enter your bloodstream, resulting in leaky gut syndrome. These toxins within your bloodstream further weaken your immune system and can play havoc with your hormone balance. They may even disturb the healthy functioning of your brain. You can recognize if you have a Candida infection by looking for its symptoms. Some of these symptoms include gastrointestinal problems such as abdominal bloating, constipation, diarrhea, or all three. Other symptoms can be seen in your mood, such as anxiety, depression, a foggy thought processes, insomnia, and mood swings. Still other symptoms can show themselves in other ways in the body such as food sensitivities, low blood sugar, premenstrual syndrome, chronic vaginal infections, recurrent bladder infections, and tinnitus. Unfortunately, any one of these symptoms can indicate other underlying health problems in addition to the presence of a yeast infection making Candida very difficult to diagnose. As a result, the condition can go
unnoticed for an extended period of time. Candida and leaky gut syndrome will often go hand in hand and if they are left untreated, they can lead to advanced stages of disease.
