Persuasive speech is the process of communicating with another person to achieve a particular end. Behavioral change is usually the main goal of persuasion. Persuasive speech offers endless benefits to people who take the time to master this rewarding skill. Yes, persuasive speaking is a indeed a skill, and over time, you too can master it if you are able to find the right references and resources. While it is true that there are courses out there that can help you get started, the real learning process occurs when you apply what you know now in real life. Application, repetition, and practice are important to persuasive speakers because you have to start building your repertoire of persuasive tactics. You will only be able to do that when you start applying persuasive techniques while you are conversing with other people. Persuasion and personal change Essentially, we want people to change when we try to persuade them. We want them to change because that change will produce a benefit for us, or it will help us accomplish something that we want. Although people are generally resistant to change, persuasive speech can actually reduce this fear of change. Once the fear of change is reduced or removed completely, a person can actually appreciate the change that you are trying to introduce. For example, if you were trying to convince a client to go to your company instead of going to a competitor and you offer unbeatable benefits, the change that you are introducing will be evaluated as good, and therefore your client will appreciate the change. Behavioral change is never achieved in seconds. If you see any book that says that there is a secret technique that will have people saying yes to you in seconds, then that book is probably fake. People have their own beliefs, and persuasion is not a magic technique. It is a communication process that aims to modify existing viewpoints so that a new viewpoint can be adopted by the spectator or listener. The good thing about persuasive speaking is that once you are able to persuade a person to do something or to think in a particular manner, he or she will sustain the personal change even if you are no longer there. So again, if a person was convinced to buy a new brand of soap and he was impressed by this

change, he will stick to the new brand of soap even if he doesnt encounter anyone who supports this brand. The new belief and behavior becomes part of his existing repertoire of beliefs and behaviors. Now some of you might be wondering: should you be using rewards and punishments to persuade people? Well, that is definitely one way of achieving your persuasive goals, but I have to remind you that the reward and punishment system (in the context of persuasion) requires extra effort and resources. Over time, the perceived benefit or reward can be ignored completely. So you have to continually offer something of value to the person so that they will continue performing the desired action or behavior change.
