When dealing with lactose intolerance, it can be hard to know what you can and what you cant eat. Many times, foods that arent considered dairy products still contain lactose and may cause symptoms such as cramping, bloating, nausea, and diarrhea for some people. It is important to fully understand what kinds of foods may contain lactose. Lactose intolerance is a condition that is caused by the inability to digest the lactose found in milk and products that contain milk. It is a deficiency of lactase, an enzyme that is produced by the cells lining the small intestine. This enzyme is supposed to break the lactose down into simpler sugars that can be absorbed into the bloodstream. When this deficiency in the digestion process occurs, individuals may experience symptoms such as bloating, abdominal pain, gas, diarrhea, or nausea about thirty minutes to two hours after consuming milk or milk products. Many people are aware that milk contains lactose. However, sometimes it can be unclear exactly which foods are considered milk products and therefore, which foods should be avoided. Other types of foods that are easily recognizable as milk products are yogurt, cheese, ice cream, and cream. But in addition, foods that are also labeled as milk products are mayonnaise, chocolate, instant mashed potatoes, boiled sweets, salad cream, and sponge cakes -- especially those that contain cream filling. Milk is one of the most popular and often-used ingredients in food, so those who are lactose intolerant must learn to check the ingredients on food labels in order to reduce or eliminate their symptoms. It is not enough to simply limit the amount of milk and milk products that are consumed. Many homemade foods such as pancakes, waffles, biscuits, mashed potatoes, and cookies are made with milk, and this is true for these products when theyre sold already made, or as a mix. Processed foods such as doughnuts, toaster pastries, breakfast cereals, and potato or corn chips may contain lactose as well. In addition, products that you wouldnt think contain even small amounts of lactose actually do. Get into the habit of checking food labels for bread and baked goods, soups, salad dressings, protein powders and bars, and even processed meats such as bacon, sausage, hot dogs, and lunch meats. Also some non-dairy products such as liquid and powdered coffee creamers and whipped toppings may contain small amounts of lactose. If the words milk, lactose, curds, whey, dry milk solids, or milk by-products are listed on the ingredients label of any food, the product most likely contains lactose. Lactose may also be found in some prescription medicines, making the habit of reading labels even more vital. Some of these prescriptions include some types of birth control pills. Plus some over-the-counter medications such as those that treat stomach acid and gas can have lactose in

them as well. With so many different types of foods containing lactose, those who are lactose intolerant have to be especially wary of what they eat. However, the intolerance to lactose differs from person to person. Not everyone with lactase deficiency will experience digestive symptoms. Most people who are lactose intolerant can handle some amount of lactose in their diet.
