Character Building

Akhlaq

(Good Conduct,Morality) in Islam is food for the soul

“The dearest of you to me is he who is the best of you in Akhlaq.” Holy Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (saw) is an Arabic term referring to A khlaq the practice of virtue, morality and good manners in Islamic Theology

and Philosophy (Falsafah). It is most commonly translated in English as; Islamic behavior, disposition, good conduct, nature, temper, ethics, morals or character (of a person). Human perfection has many levels. The greater the amount of self-discipline and effort on the part of the individual the higher the level of perfection that he would attain, In other words, he stands between two extreme points, the lowest of which is below the level of beasts and the highest of which surpasses even the high station of angels. The human movement between these two extremes is discussed by ilm al-Akhlaq (Science of Ethics). It is the goal of ethics to raise and guide man from the lowest animal state to that exalted position superior to that of the angels. In a hadith from Imam Ali (as)is related as saying, Allah (SWT) created Angels with intellect but without anger or desire and created animals with anger and desire but without intellect, and created man with intellect (reason), anger and desire. If man's reason over powers his anger and desires, he rises to the status of that higher than angels. But if his anger and desires overpower his intellect and reason he becomes lower in status than that of an animal. Do you know, what is religion? Let's find out from Holy Prophet Muhammad (saw)! Once a man came to Holy Prophet Muhammad (saw) and said: O messenger of Allah, what is religion? Holy Prophet Muhammad (saw) replied: Akhlaq (Good Conduct, Morality). Then he came to his front and asked: O Messenger of Allah, what is religion? Holy Prophet Muhammad (saw) replied: Akhlaq .Then he came to his left side and asked: what is religion? Holy Prophet Muhammad (saw) replied: Akhlaq . Then he came to his back side and asked the same question: what is religion? Holy Prophet Muhammad (saw) replied: Akhlaq .Then Holy Prophet Muhammad (saw) said looking at him: Not to be angry is Akhlaq.

Holy Prophet Muhammad (saw) was asked: What is misfortune Holy Prophet Muhammad (saw) replied: Bad Conduct. Hence, religion Islam according to our Holy Prophet Muhammad (saw) is nothing but Akhlaq . And Akhlaq is based on the cleanliness of both our inner self (Nafs, Soul) and our outer self (Physical, Body). It is of great importance to be mindful that Akhlaq forms an important component of our religion Islam and our Imaan (faith).

The Character of a Muslim Allah (SWT) speaks about the importance of good conduct, ethics, morals or character in the Noble Qur'an. Allah (SWT) orders and reminds us continuously throughout the Noble Qur'an to develop good character and treat people well, where HE (SWT) says: 1. And say to My servants (that) they speak that which is best. (17:53) 2. Worship Allah, and do not associate partners with him. And be good to your parents, and the relatives, and to the orphans, and to the poor people, and the neighbor that is close to you and the neighbor that is not close to you, and your companion on the journey. (4:36) Many Ahadith can be quoted concerning good conduct, ethics, morals or character. The following are some of what Holy Prophet Muhammad (saw) said: 1. I have been sent is to perfect good manners (Morality, Islamic Behavior). 2. The dearest of you to me is he who is the best of you in Akhlaq. 3. The most complete of believers in Success SuccessMagazine Magazine(06) (00)

Imaan (faith) are those who are best in character. 4. The most (important) things that cause people to reach Heaven are divine piety and a good temper. Imam Ali (as) says, Good behavior lies in three traits: Avoiding unlawful things, acquiring the lawful ones, and being fair to one's family members. Imam Hassan (as) says: The most preferable adornment is graceful manners. Imam Ali ibn Husayn (as) said: Fair speech increases wealth, stretches sustenance, postpones death, creates love among family members, and causes the person to enter Heaven. Imam Sadiq (as) said: There are three things that each of which is brought by a person to Allah (SWT), Allah (SWT) will necessitate Heaven for the one: donation in poverty, a good temper with all people, and justice to one's self. Why should we have Akhlaq ? When Allah (SWT) created the human being, He (SWT) created it in two parts. One part was like an empty car shell, used to hold something, this is known as outer self (Physical, Body). The other part was like the engine, this is known as inner self (Nafs, Soul). Our body is such that it needs looking after; The way to look after this soul is to listen, to think, to respect, to help. Hence Akhlaq in Islam is food for the soul, and if we feed it regularly, it will remain happy and healthy. Holy Prophet Muhammad (saw) according to Noble Qur'an has superior standard of character. Allah (SWT) confirms in Noble Qur'an the Akhlaq of our Holy Prophet Muhammad (saw)"And most certainly you are on sublime morality (exalted standard of character)". (68:4) With the beautiful example of our dear Holy Prophet Muhammad (saw) in front of us, we should be showing and teaching people what good character is. So, let us make a promise to ourselves that we never let our Akhlaq fall. May Allah (SWT) make it possible for us to practice upon the beautiful teachings in the Noble Qur'an the perfect example of our Holy Prophet Muhammad (saw). Ameen

Power of Positive Talk or Avoiding

Toxic Self-Talk (Negative Talking) Allah (SWT) the Exalted says in Noble Qur'an: "O you who believe! Be careful of (your duty to) Allah and speak the right words." (33:70) remember my dad teaching me the power of language at a very young age. Not only did my dad understand that specific words affect our mental pictures, but he understood words are a powerful programming factor in lifelong success. One particularly interesting event occurred when I was eight. As a kid, I was always climbing trees. So, it came to no surprise for my dad to find me at the top of a 30foot tree swinging back and forth. My older cousin, Saima, was also in the same tree. She was hanging on the first big limb, about ten feet below me. Saima's mother also noticed us at the exact time my dad did. About that time a huge gust of wind came over the tree. I could hear the leaves start to rattle and the tree begin to sway. I remember my dad's voice over the wind yell, "Fatima, Hold on tightly." So I did. The next thing I know, I heard Saima screaming at the top of her lungs, laying flat on the ground. She had fallen out of the tree. I scampered down the tree to safety. My dad later told me why she fell and I did not. Apparently, when her mother felt the gust of wind, she yelled out, "Saima, don't fall!" And Saima did fall. My dad then explained to me that the mind has a very difficult time processing a negative image. In fact, people who rely on internal pictures cannot see a negative at all. In order for Saima to process the command of not falling, her nine-year-old brain had to first imagine falling, then try to tell the brain not to do what it just imagined. Whereas, my eight-year-old brain instantly had an internal image of me hanging on tightly. This concept is especially useful when you are attempting to break a habit or set a goal. You can't visualize not doing something. The only way to properly visualize not doing something is to actually find a word for what you want to do and visualize that. For example, when I was thirteen years old, I played for my junior high school baseball team. I tried so hard to

I

be good, but I just couldn't get it together at that age. I remember hearing the words run through my head as I was running out for a pass, "Don't drop it!" Naturally, I dropped the ball. My coaches were not skilled enough to teach us proper "Self-Talk." They just thought some kids could catch and others couldn't. Here is a very easy demonstration to teach your kids and your friends the power of a toxic vocabulary. Ask them to hold a pen or pencil. Hand it to them. Now, follow my instructions carefully. Say to them, "Okay, try to drop the pencil." Observe what they do. Most people release their hands and watch the pencil hit the floor. You respond, "You weren't paying attention. I said TRY to drop the pencil. Now please do it again." Most people then pick up the pencil and pretend to be in excruciating pain while their hand tries but fails to drop the pencil. The point is made. If you tell your brain you will "give it a try," you are actually telling your brain to fail. I have a "no try" rule in my house and with everyone I interact with. Either people will do it or they won't. Either they will be at the party or they won't. My dad also told me that psychologists claim it takes seventeen positive statements to offset one negative statement. Ask yourself how many compliments you give yourself daily versus how many criticisms. We all have internal voices that give us direction. So, are you giving yourself the 17:1 ratio or are you short changing yourself with toxic self-talk like, "I'm fat. Nobody will like me. zI'm so stupid. I'm broke, etc. etc."If our parents can set a lifetime of programming with one wrong statement, imagine the kind of programming you are doing on a daily basis with your own internal dialogue. Here is a list of Toxic Vocabulary words. Notice when you or other people use them. BUT: Negates any words that are stated before it. TRY: Presupposes failure. Success Magazine (07)

IF: Presupposes that you may not. MIGHT: It does nothing definite. It leaves options for your listener. WOULD HAVE: SHOULD HAVE: and implies guilt COULD HAVE: Past tense that draws attention to things that didn't actually happen but the person tries to take credit as if it did happen. CAN'T/DON'T: These words force the listener to focus on exactly the opposite of What you want. This is a classic mistake that parents and coaches make without knowing the damage of this linguistic error. Examples: Toxic phrase: "Don't drop the ball!" Likely result: Drops the ball Better language: "Catch the ball!" Toxic phrase: "You shouldn't watch so much television." Likely result: Watches more television. Better language: "I read too much television makes people stupid. You might find yourself turning that TV off and picking up one of those books more often!" Exercise: Take a moment to write down all the phrases you use on a daily basis or any Toxic Self-Talk that you have noticed yourself using. Write these phrases down so you will begin to catch yourself as they occur and change them.Forge a positive relationship with the world around you and the world will become a better place for you to live. And remember: Make positive Self-Talk a daily practice.

Create a Service Culture When I

By Harvey Mackay

went into business m a n y y e a r s ago, I t o l d people I owned an envelope company. I had business c a r d s printed t h a t identified

me as an envelope salesman. Idescribed myself as an entrepreneur. All of those facts are still true, but incomplete. What I and our company really do is provide customer service.Well sure, Harvey, you say. But isn t that just a part of the whole o p e r a t i o n ? A b s o l u t e l y, positively, irrefutably, NO. I am in the service business, regardless of the product I make and sell. If my service is lacking, my business will be sent packing. To validate my thinking, I recently visited with John Tschohl, president of the Service Quality Institute. John has spent 33 years focused on customer service. He has written hundreds of articles, as well as seven books on the topic. You ve probably heard him interviewed on television or radio. He has been called the guru of customer service by USA Today, Time and Entrepreneur magazines. Even the most successful companies are in constant competition for business. What sets them apart often boils down to one factor,Outstanding customer service John offered up some stellar advice for creating a service culture, no matter what business you re in.First, you ve got to understand you re in the service business. Most companies think they are in manufacturing and retail; airlines don t know they are in the service business, he said. Southwest Airlines is successful because they understand they re a

customer service company they just happen to be an airline. Second, you have to look at all the policies, procedures and systems that you ve got in place that make life miserable for customers. You could have the nicest people in the world, but you could have stupid hours, stupid rules, stupid procedures, that just burn the customer. When you make it that difficult for customers to patronize you, they find someone else who is more accommodating.Third, you have to have empowerment. Every single person has to be able to make fast and power decisions on the spot, and it better be in favor of the customer, John said. Fourth, you have to be more careful about whom

you hire. The service leaders hire one person out of 50 interviewed, sometimes one out of 100, but they re very, very, very careful, he said. Look for the cream, the A players, instead of bringing on B and C players. Fifth, educate and train the entire staff on the art of customer service with something new and fresh every four to six months. Let s say you want to create the service culture. No matter if you have a hundred or a thousand or a hundred thousand employees, you better have something new and fresh, so it s constantly in front of them, John said. So when they wake up every day, and they go towork, they say, Fantastic, I m taking care of customers! Finally, measure the results financially so that you know the impact it s making on revenue, Success Magazine (08)

sales, profit and market share.Everything you do, according to John, should be built around the concept of creating an incredible customer experience. At Amazon, they ve got technology, speed and price. They ve got everything. If I m on their website and I want them to call me, they re going to call me back in one second. That s speed. When you place an order, you can do it 24 hours a day, seven days a week. I realize Amazon is in a class by itself, and most businesses aren t ever going to achieve the growth or profits of that gargantuan company. But John s advice can be translated to companies of any size. A one-person shop can provide great service because they often have personal contact with their customers.Bigger companies have more resources available, which should enhance the service experience. Perhaps the simplest way of creating a service culture is a variation of the golden rule: Treat your customers as you wish to be treated. Make your customers excited that you re in business. Make them grateful that they have the opportunity to buy your services or products. Make them feel like they are your most important client. Make your service so outstanding that they wouldn t think of doing business with anyone else. And then find a way to make your service even better! MacKay s Moral: Customer service is not a department, it s everyone s job. Harvey Mackay is the author of the New York Times #1 bestsellers Swim with the Sharks without Being Eaten Alive and Beware the Naked Man Who Offers You His Shirt. Both books are among the top 15 inspirational business books of all time, according to the New York Times.Mr. MacKay is also a popular and entertaining business speaker and was named one of the top five speakers in t h e w o r l d b y To a s t m a s t e r s International.Follow Harvey MacKay on Twitter@harveymackay

How can You keep on Winning ?

Learn to make it a habit

By John Maxwell

Your morning cup of coffee: habit, Bedtime stories for your kids: habit, Daily perusal of favorite

websites: habit, Early morning jog: habit, Success in life: habit, Wait a minute. What? Yes, you heard right: Success is a habit, just like all those other routines. Sure, it takes a little more work to cultivate this one than, say, filing your paperwork before it overwhelms your desk; but nonetheless, if you train yourself right, you can experience that I did it! feeling over and over again. Robert Ringer, author of Million Dollar Habits , explains it well: The world is saturated with intelligent, highly educated, extraordinarily skilled people who experience ongoing frustration because of their lack of success. Millions of others spend their lives working hard, long hours only to die broke. Success is a matter of understanding and religiously practicing specific, simple habits that always lead to success. The secret to your success can be found in your daily agenda. Let s look at five tendencies you need to become a habitual winner. 1. Winners are passionate about what they do.OK, I m fudging my definition a little bit. I m not sure passion is a habit, but I have to start there because it s the cornerstone for everything else. Passion is the fuel and energy of life. It is the catalyst for self-discipline. It puts the fun in working. It s impossible to succeed without it. H e re s t h e c o m m o n m i s t a k e : People look for outside influences to motivate them and fuel their passions. People ask me all the time, John, who motivates you? It s the wrong question.

They should ask what motivates me. If your work matches your passion, then it isn t work at all. I like to say I m a workafrolic, not a workaholic. It s true I can hardly distinguish work time from playtime. You can become one, too. If you make money at it, great; if not, then at least you ve dedicated your life to something meaningful. 2. Winners value the process of

You can start by developing these three attributes: Trustworthiness Discipline Attitude 5. Winners persist on their path toward success: Quit, and you re guaranteed to lose. Persist, and you re on your way to finding success.I remember the first time I spoke

winning: People in the habit of losing overvalue victories and undervalue the process required to win. People in the habit of winning are the opposite: They find value and satisfaction in the preparation process. 3. Winners focus on their strengths and not their weaknesses: If you want to be successful, you ve got to work on your weaknesses, right?Wrong! If you want to develop a habit of winning, you need to cultivate your strengths. When it comes to skills, you don t have much say you re naturally good at some things and not others. So focus on your strengths and stop obsessing over your weaknesses. Otherwise,4. Winners focus on winning on the inside more than the outside: If you want to win, you need to work on the inner you, not the exterior self you show the world.

before an audience. It was 1966 and I was 19 years old. I knew right away that speaking was one of my strengths So I worked at improving. And when I found something that worked, I focused on improving it. How long did it take me to nail the art of public speaking? The Learning Executive How

would your day be different if you organized your time energy, and resources primarily around the By objective Jim Colins of learning, instead of around performance? For many people, their daily activities what they do and how they go about doing it would be dramatically changed. Indeed, despite all the buzz around the concept of the learning organization, I m struck by how few people seem to have embraced the idea of being a true learning person. This came home to me during an interview with a television producer developing a documentary on Sam Walton. After about 45 minutes, she asked if I had anything else to add, indicating the end of the interview. No, I said, but I d like to ask you some questions. She paused, obviously not prepared for my request, and then gave an uncertain, Ok. For the next 15 minutes, I had the great pleasure of asking her questions about what she had learned in her research. The answer is: They act as knower rather than learners, which, incidentally, is just the opposite of what Sam Walton did. That s the first time that s ever happened to me, she said. I interview professors and experts all the time, but I ve never had one turn the tables and begin asking me questions. At first I was taken aback surprised really but it s refreshing to see that experts can still learn. Stop and think about that for a minute. Here s a bright television producer who spends her life delving into specific subjects a walking treasure trove of knowledge and people whose profession is to continually learn don t pause to take the opportunity to expand their expertise further by talking with her. They act as knower rather than learners, which, incidentally, is just the opposite of what

Sam Walton did. Walton viewed himself not as a definitive expert on retailing but as a lifelong student of his craft, always asking questions and taking every opportunity to learn. A Brazilian businessman once told me that of 10 U.S. retailing CEOs, he wrote to asking for an appointment after he'd purchased a discount retailing chain in South America, only Walton said yes. Only later did I realize he was as interested in learning from us as we were in learning from him; he pummeled us with questions about Brazil. Later, we launched a joint venture with Wa l - M a r t i n S o u t h A m e r i c a . Becoming a learning person certainly involves responding to every situation with learning in mind, as Walton did. But it involves more than that; it requires setting explicit learning objectives. Look at your personal list of long-term objectives mid-term objectives, and your current to-do list. How many items fall into the performance genre and how many fall into the learning genre? How many begin with the structure My objective is to learn X, rather than My objective is to accomplish Y ? Most people operate off of to-do lists. They re a useful mechanism for getting things done. A true learning person also has a to-learn list, and the items on that list carry at least as much weight in how one organizes his or her time as the to-do list. Granite Rock, in Watsonville, Calif., one of the few authentic learning organizations, has institutionalized this idea by replacing performance goals for individuals with learning goals. The stone, concrete, and asphalt supplier makes the shift explicit by asking each employee to set his or her annual objectives in the format Learn _______ so that I can __. Learning people also develop explicit learning mechanisms, such as learning logs or formal autopsies time explicitly set aside to discuss or reflect on events and extract the maximum knowledge and understanding from them.Such people plant seeds of learning that will flower later. One prominent thinker I spent a day with ended our discussion with the statement, I have a small consulting fee: you must keep me informed as to your learning and progress. Every six months or so I send him a letter, and I imagine he gets dozens of such learning letters a Success Magazine (09)

year. I ve also found the mechanism of a learning notebook to be useful; in it I keep track of my learning and observations about life, work, myself, or whatever seems interesting, much the same way a scientist. I m not yet as much of a learning person as I d like to be. Yet as I begin to consciously shift to filtering everything through a learning lens, I find both dramatic and subtle differences in the way I do things and how I spend my time. With a get things done lens, I ll leave a voice-mail; with a learning lens, I ll seek a real-time phone call during which I can ask questions and learn from conversation. With a performance lens, I ll try to impress the interviewer with my knowledge; with a learning lens, I ll ask her questions. Even mundane activities like washing dishes, shaving, and walking through airports can be transformed by carrying a portable tape player and listening to unabridged books on tape. John W. Gardner, author of the classic book Self-Renewal: The Individual and Innovative Society(and a man who keeps an active learning and teaching schedule well into his 80s), captured the spirit of the learning person Don t set out in life to be an interesting person; set out to be an interested person. Learning people, of which Gardner is a prime example, learn till the day they die, not because learning will get them somewhere, but because they see learning as part of the reason for living. When asked for an economic justification for learning, they find the question as odd as being asked for a financial justification for breathing. The link between learning and performance is self-evident, but for a true learning person or organization. Jim Collins is a frequent speaker and author on the subjects of business and leadership. He is a student and teacher of enduring great companies -- how they grow, how they attain superior performance, and how good companies can become great companies. Having invested over a decade of research into the topic, Jim has authored or coauthored four books, including the classic BUILT TO LAST , and GOOD TO GREAT . It is this sense of responsibility that has made him a leader. Whether it was education or entrepreneurship, he has excelled in whatever he has done as a visionary. He is a businessman and a philanthropist, but most significantly he is a social entrepreneur. The brief history of the Ali family s dealings in the world of business in India had been quite venturesome.Ê Rife with success through innovation, it wasn t short of instances of extraordinary determination in the face of certain failure. The patriarch of Ali family, Syed Wazir Ali, was the grandfather of Syed Babar Ali. He started the business in a very small way by opening a shop in Lahore Success Magazine (11)

The man behind Packages Ltd., Nestle-Milkpak, InterBank, Ali Institute of Education and Lahore University of Management Sciences is perhaps among the greatest success stories in the world. Only those bestowed with a true spirit of nationalism, combined with a genuine flare of entrepreneurship could, and would, dare to challenge the prevalent beliefs and Syed Babar Ali, the youngest son of Syed Maratib Ali- the doyen of Ali family was just such a person. His career as an entrepreneur, philanthropist and public figure has been multidimensional and the list of his achievements is rather exhaustive. Besides his diverse roles, he contributed largely to revolutionize the Pakistani educational system by evolving Harvard equivalent university in Pakistan, LUMS. Syed Babar Ali's foresight coupled with sincerity of purpose helped raise the bar of competition in education sector. He believes in the joint venture philosophy and most of his businesses are joint ventures with major multinationals. Packages Ltd. was the first packaging plant in Pakistan. In 1957, its main customers were Pakistan Tobacco Company, Lever Brothers and Lipton- all multinational that had been importing their packaging requirements till then. They extended full cooperation to the new company encouraging it to produce local packaging material to match their specifications. The production facilities at the new company consisted of making cartons out of paperboard and flexible packaging material out of paper, plastic and aluminum foils to serve the packaging needs of the manufacturers. Even in the first year of its operations, the company showed very encouraging results; it made a net profit on the first twelve months' sales of Rs. 6.3 million and the trend continued thereafter. Packages Ltd. Owes a debt of gratitude for its early success and continuous growth not only to its Swedish partner, Akerlund & Rausing, but also to the affectionate support of Dr. Ruben Rausing, who founded the Akerlund & Rausing, the premier packaging company of Europe. Packages Ltd. was the first important Swedish investment in Pakistan and is probably still the most prominent one today. In 1974, Syed Babar Ali convened the meeting of the senior management of Packages Ltd. to study the national business environment and evaluate the probable investment opportunities for the future. At one time he said,Ê'If I were interested in making money, I would also have chosen textile or sugar industry instead of taking a risk of investing in the relatively new technology of paperboard packaging. Please understand that I am only interested in assignments that are not only challenging but also have a string element of nation-building through the transfer of new technology to my country'. As evinced by time, this has been the guiding principle of all industrial investments made by Syed Babar Ali. The company has always stood by its employees and never resorted to retrenchment of staff as measures to override difficult financial times. The employees also display a genuine sense of commitment to the organization. Numerous cases of second-generation

employment in the company are a sign of pride in the organization. Syed Babar Ali has always been genuinely interested in the development of the company and has been appreciative of all efforts towards this end. A culture of self-evaluation and constant improvement permeates the company. Everyone is encouraged to share in perpetual growth through new ideas. Over the years, Packages Ltd. has grown successfully keeping in view its core value of fairness to all concerned. The certain trait that makes Syed Babar Ali a social entrepreneur is difficult to identify. There are so many reasons one after another. Some of them are known to everyone and some of them are not known at all. He promoted the cause of World Wide Fund for Nature (earlier World Wildlife Fund) where he served in various capacities, both in Pakistan and at international level, from 1972 to 1996. He was the international President of WWF from 1996 to 1999 succeeding HRH Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh. The prestigious position was given to him in the view of his interest and achievements in the field of conservation and was a great honor for Pakistan indeed. He is now the Vice President Emeritus, WWF International and President Emeritus WWF-Pakistan. He is also a member of Layton Rehamatullah Benevolent Trust Karachi and Shalamar Hospital, Lahore.Ê Syed Maratib Ali, the late father of Syed Babar Ali, has always been a source of great inspiration for him, as he grew in an environment of philanthropy, which developed stronger sense of faith in him. Syed Maratib Ali established Syed Maratib Religious and Charitable Trust Society in 1939 to promote public welfare and education of deserving students and to provide a skilled manpower to the local industry. Then Syed Babar Ali setup Babar Ali foundation in 1985. This foundation gives about a million dollars a year primarily for education and health in Pakistan. As an educationist, he led the establishment of the Lahore University of Management & Sciences (LUMS) in 1985, of which he has been the first ProChancellor. Whereas, according to NY Times, LUMS is Pakistan s premier management education institution, which has evolved into the approximate equivalent of Harvard University in Pakistan. In 1992, he founded Ali institute of Education for training of primary and secondary school teachers. He is a member on the board of the following important educational institutes of Lahore: Success Magazine (12)

Aitchison College, F.C. College, Kinnaird College and Lahore School of Economics. He is the member of the regional advisory board of London Business School and a member of the Initiative on Social Enterprise at Harvard University. He received honors and awards from the Government of Sweden, the Netherlands, an OBE from Britain (1997), and was awarded an Honorary Doctorate Degree of Laws from McGill University, Montreal, Canada (1997). The biggest achievement of Syed Babar Ali was the establishment of Lahore University of Management Sciences where students get the education of internationally standards and are able to compete all over the globe with other students. Babar Ali believes that: If you plan for a year, plant a seed. If for ten years, plant a tree. If for hundred years, teach the people. When you sow a seed once, you will reap a single harvest. When you teach the people, you will reap a hundred harvests. You cannot build a country, if you re not thinking beyond your own lifetime. Pakistan s young people should be citizens of the world, not narrow-minded or intolerant (NYT 2009/12/19). His greatest contribution has been the education to the youth of Pakistan. Not only this but this education has been the best quality, matching with the best in the world. He has brought about quite a revolution that has changed the face of Pakistani youth and its image in times to come. Babar Ali Foundation was established in 1985. Since its inception, the foundation has received contributions from Syed Babar Ali and his family which also included the donation of a plot of his land located on Upper Mall, Lahore, where he constructed a building at a cost of Rs. 28.6 million in 1996. The objectives of the organization are to build, aid, assist, set up, manage, maintain and run the schools, colleges, institutions of learning and practical training, libraries, museums, galleries, handicraft centers, parks and places of medical aid and relief. The Foundation also promotes and encourages nature conservation, culture and sports and awards scholarships to outstanding female students for higher education in Pakistan. Its mission is to promote sustainable development by supporting education, training and research.Ê As well as assisting institutes, libraries and hospitals, encouraging nature conservation, culture and sports. Undertaking measures for the diffusion of knowledge and expertise.

Speaking about the importance of good education he said, I think we need to work on educating our youth about the importance of ethics, morals, principles and social service. These attributes would lead to the development of sound character essential for a successful life at both individual and national levels. Pakistan is endowed with a talented and dedicated people who, given the opportunity, excel in their chosen fields. Unfortunately, investment in all forms of education has been inadequate. Unless this is addressed quickly, the country will be unable to keep pace with the requirements of a modern and globally competitive world. We believe Pakistan s problems can be addressed through intelligent, socially responsible, and broad-based leadership. This is the genesis behind the KSBL to create a cadre of capable and transforming leaders for the country and the region. In Pakistan we have good managers who can manage the enterprise well. But we need to have worldclass managers who will thrive in a global economy and be thought leaders. Such managers need exposure to current management thinking and research so that they are able to plan for the future. Globally, and specifically in Pakistan, the environment has been very unpredictable in the last decade. Owing to the financial tsunami, the earthquake, the floods, the war on terror, and increases in international prices for food and energy, the local and global scenarios are constantly changing. we intends to produce creative leaders who would be equipped to conceptually assess the current situation, analytically calculatefuture, and come up with innovative solutions to issues. Talking about entrepreneurship he said, Entrepreneurship and innovation are incorporated into our curriculum through several courses. Additionally, our students will be given the opportunity to use the skills they learn to help startup companies. Our students will learn how to overcome challenges and biases against entrepreneurship that might otherwise limit their opportunities. By bringing world-class education to Pakistan, we expect to help stem the brain drain by giving intellectually outstanding students the same quality education in Pakistan that they could get abroad. But if world-class education were available right here in Pakistan, many of those students would be motivated to stay back. Success Magazine (13)

His success lies in two factors: one, his ability to foresee a good business opportunity when no one else can and his determination to soldier on in the face of adversity.

I get my strength from God Sadruddin Hashwani nyone who grew up in the major cities of Pakistan in the early 1980s has a special place in their hearts for the Marriott hotels (previously Holiday Inns) for they were the first luxury spaces where people could come together in a relaxed, comfortable environment to dine or stay. The man behind the chain of the Marriott and Pearl Continental hotels is larger than the institutions he has created: Sadruddin Hashwani. And to my utter surprise, he is down to earth, kind and dismissive of the accolades showered upon him. Born in 1940 in Karachi prior to Partition, Mr. Hashwani s story is the stuff legends are made of. A college dropout, he struggled throughout his early life but was driven with a purpose to succeed an ambition that would often find him at odds with those close to him who questioned what he was doing. One example of that is after Prime Minister Zulfikar Bhutto nationalized industries in the 1970s and Mr. Hashwani started investing in those businesses not yet nationalized, like textile, minerals and real estate. People thought I was mad [at that time] but I knew what I was doing, he says.He earned his first accolade, the title of Cotton King, when he was in his mid-twenties, as in a very short period, he became the largest exporter of cotton, rice and grains. That this came from a person who at 18 had begun working as a salesperson for steel products is noteworthy. That was just the beginning. From there, he moved onto creating hotels, getting land from the government and building what would over the decades become an empire in the country and from where he would expand his business overseas.Today Mr. Hashwani s Hashoo Group comprises business in hospitality and tourism, oil and gas, mining, pharmaceuticals and trading. Relationship

Building a Great Relationship with Your Child Want to be a great parent?

Want to raise a happy, healthy, well-behaved kid? Want to live in a home where discipline becomes unnecessary? The secret is to create a closer connection with your child. "What do you mean? Of course I love my kid, and I tell him so all the time. But that doesn't mean he doesn't need discipline!" It isn t enough that we tell our children we love them. We need to put our love into action every day for them to feel it. And when we do that our kids need a lot less discipline! "But what does that mean, putting our love into action?" Mostly, it means making that connection with our child our highest priority. Love in action means paying thoughtful attention to what goes on between us, seeing things from the our child's point of view, and always remembering that this child who sometimes may drive us crazy is still that precious baby we welcomed into our arms with such hope. "Doesn't that take a lot of energy?" It takes a lot of effort to fully attend to another human being, but when we are really present with our child, we often find that it energizes us and makes us feel more alive, as being fully present with anyone does. But 90% of people on their deathbed say that their biggest regret is that they didn't get closer to the people in their lives. And almost all parents whose children are grown say they wish they had spent more time with their kids. "Being fully present? How can I do that when I'm just trying to get dinner on the table and keep from tripping over the toys?" Being present just means paying attention. Like a marriage or a friendship, your relationship with your child needs positive attention to thrive. Attention = Love. And, of course, that kind of attentiveness takes time. You can multi-task at it while you're making dinner, but the secret of a great relationship is some focused time every day attending only to that child. "This is all too vague for me. What am I supposed to actually DO?" 1. Start right for a firm foundation The closeness of the parent-child connection throughout life results from

how much parents connect with their

babies, right from the beginning. The bonding theorists say that if a man bonds with his newborn, he will stay closer to her throughout life. But you don't have to believe that bonding with a newborn is crucial to note that the kind of man who treasures his newborn and nurtures his new family is likely to continue doing so in ways that bring them closer throughout her childhood. 2.Remember all relationships take work Good parent-child connections don t spring out of nowhere, any more than good marriages do. Biology gives us a headstart -- if we weren t biologically programmed to love our infants the human race would have died out long ago -- but as kids get older we need to build on that natural bond, or the challenges of modern life can erode it. 3. Prioritize time with your child Quality time is a myth, because there s no switch to turn on closeness. Imagine that you work all the time, and have set aside an evening with your husband, whom you ve barely seen in the past six months. Does he immediately start baring

without quantity, there s no quality. You can t expect a good relationship with your daughter if you spend all your time at work and she spends all her time with her friends. So as hard as it is with the pressures of job and daily life, if we want a better relationship with our kids, we have to free up the time to make that happen. 4. Start with Trust Trust is the foundation of every good relationship. Trust begins in infancy, when your baby learns whether she can depend on you to pick her up when she needs you. Over time, we earn our children s trust in other ways: following through on the promise we make to play a game with them later, not breaking a confidence, picking them up on time. At the same time, we extend our trust to them by expecting the best from them and believing in their fundamental goodness and potential. Trust does not mean blindly believing what your teenager tells you. Trust means not giving up on your child, no matter what he or she does. Trust never walking

Generating New Ideas Think Differently & Spark Creativity

W e need to think differently!" "This needs some fresh ideas!" Are messages like these popping up more and more in your workplace? Faced with complex, open-ended, everchanging challenges, organizations realize that constant, ongoing innovation is critical to stay ahead of the competition. This is why we need to be on the lookout for new ideas that can drive innovation, and it's why the ability to think differently, generate new ideas, and spark creativity within a team becomes an important skill. You need to work actively on building and cultivating this skill, and it can be done!Often, though, we make the mistake of assuming that good ideas just happen. Or worse still, we get caught in the mind trap that creativity is an aptitude; some people have it, others don't.These assumptions are rarely true.Everyone can come up with fresh, radical ideas you just need to learn to open your mind and think differently. This article shows you how to do so. How to Generate New Ideas

Standard idea-generation techniques concentrate on combining or adapting existing ideas. This can certainly generate results. But here, our focus is on equipping you with tools that help you leap onto a totally different plane. These approaches push your mind to forge new connections, think differently and consider new perspectives.A word of caution – while these techniques are extremely effective, they will only succeed if they are backed by rich knowledge of the area you're working on.

Breaking Thought Patterns

All of us can tend to get stuck in certain thinking patterns. Breaking these thought patterns can help you get your mind unstuck and generate new ideas. There are several techniques you can use to break established thought patterns: Challenge assumptions: For every situation, you have a set of key assumptions. Challenging these assumptions gives you a whole new spin on possibilities. Suddenly the picture starts looking brighter. Reword the problem: Stating the problem differently often leads to different ideas. To reword the problem look at the issue from different angles.

"Why do we need to solve the problem?", "What's the roadblock here?", "What will happen if we don't solve the problem?" These questions will give you new insights. You might come up with new ideas to solve your new problem. Express yourself through different media:We have multiple intelligences but somehow, when faced with workplace challenges we just tend to use our verbal reasoning ability about expressing the challenge through different media? Clay, music, word association games, paint, there are several ways you can express the challenge. Don't bother about solving the challenge at this point. Just express it. Different expression might spark off different thought patterns. And these new thought patterns may yield new ideas. Think in:If you feel you cannot think of anything new, try turning things upsidedown. The reverse ideas will come flowing in. Consider these ideas–once you've reversed them again as possible Connect the Unconnected:Some of the best ideas seem to occur just by chance. Newton and the apple, Archimedes in the bath tub; examples abound.Actively seek stimuli from unexpected places and then see if you can use these stimuli to build a connection with your situation. Some techniques you could use are: Use random input:Choose a word from the dictionary and look for novel Success Magazine (18)

connections between the word and your problem. Mind map possible ideas:Put a key word or phrase in the middle of the page. Write whatever else comes in your mind on the same page. See if you can make any connections.. Take an item:Ask yourself questions such as "How could this item help in addressing the challenge?" Shift Perspective: Over the years we all build a certain type of perspective and this perspective yields a certain type of idea.To do so:Get someone else's perspectiveor Play the "If I were" game. Employ Enablers Enablers are activities and actions that assist with, rather than directly provoke, idea generation. They create a positive atmosphere. Some of the enablers that can help you get your creative juices flowing are: Belief in yourself: Creative loafing time: Change of environment Shutting out distraction Fun and humor The ability to generate new ideas is an essential work skill today. You can acquire consciously practicing techniques that force your mind to forge new connections, break old thought patterns and consider new perspectives.Along with practicing these techniques, you need to adopt enabling strategies

Personal SWOT Analysis

Making the Most of Your Talents and Opportunities Or can you get help from others or from people via the Internet? 2-Is your industry growing? 3-Do you have a network of strategic contacts to help you, or offer good advice? 5-Are any of your competitors failing to do something important? 6-Is there a need in your company or industry that no one is filling? Also, importantly, look at your strengths, and ask yourself whether these open up any opportunities – and look at your weaknesses, and ask yourself whether you could open new opportunties. Threats 1-What obstacles do you currently face at work? 2-Are any of your colleagues competing with you for projects or roles? 3-Is your job changing? Performing this analysis will often provide key information. A Personal SWOT Example What would a personal SWOT assessment look like? Review this SWOT analysis for Sadia, an advertising manager. Strengths 1-I'm very creative and communicate well with my clients and team. 3-I have the ability to ask key questions. 4-I'm completely committed to the success of a client's brand. Weaknesses 1-I have a strong need to do things quickly and sometimes the quality of my work suffers as a result. 2-I get nervous when presenting ideas to clients, and this fear of public speaking often takes the passion out of my presentations.

You are most likely to succeed in life if you use your talents to their fullest extent. Similarly, you'll suffer fewer problems if you know what your weaknesses are, and if you manage these weaknesses so that they don't matter in the work you do.So how you go about identifying these strengths and weaknesses, and analyzing the opportunities and threats that flow from them? SWOT Analysis is a useful technique that helps you do this. What makes SWOT especially powerful is that, with a little thought, it can help you uncover opportunities that you would not otherwise have spotted. And by understanding your weaknesses, you can manage and eliminate threats that might otherwise hurt your ability to move forward. If you look at yourself using the SWOT framework, you can start to separate yourself from your peers, and further develop the specialized talents and abilities you need to advance your career. How to Use the Tool To perform a personal SWOT analysis, print out our free worksheet from our webzine, and write down answers to the questions in each area below. Strengths 1-What advantages do you have on others? 2-What do you do better than others? 3-What personal resources can you access? 4-What do people see as your strengths? 5-Which of your achievements are you most proud of? Team Managment

To figure out how to delegate properly,

it's important to understand why people avoid it. Quite simply, people don't delegate because it takes a lot of up-front effort. While on the surface it's easier to do it yourself than explain the strategy behind the brochure to someone else, there are two key reasons that mean that it's probably better to delegate the task to someone else: First, if you have the ability to spearhead a new campaign, the chances are that your skills are better used further developing the strategy, and perhaps coming up with other new ideas. By doing the work yourself, you're failing to make best use of your time. Second, by meaningfully involving other people in the project, you develop those people's skills and abilities. Delegation allows you to make the best use of your time and skills, and it helps other people in the team grow and develop to reach their full potential in the organization. When to Delegate

Delegation is a win-win when done appropriately, however that does not mean that you can delegate just anything. To determine when delegation is most appropriate there are five key questions you need to ask yourself: * Essentially is this a task that someone else can do, or is it critical that you do it yourself? *Does the task provide an opportunity to grow and develop another person's skills? *Is this a task that will recur, in a similar form, in the future? *Do you have enough time to delegate

Using the Power of Other People's Help Do you feel stressed and overloaded? Or that your career seems stalled? If so, then you may need to brush up your delegation skills! If you work on your own, there's only a limited amount that you can do, however hard you work. You can only work so many hours in a day. There are only so many tasks you can complete in these hours. There are only so many people you can help by doing these tasks. And, because the number of people you can help is limited, your success is limited. However, if you're good at your job, people will want much more than this from you. This can lead to a real sense of pressure and work overload: You can't do everything that everyone wants, and this can leave you stressed, unhappy, and feeling that you're letting people down.On the positive side, however, you're being given a tremendous opportunity if you can find a way around this limitation. If you can realize this opportunity, you can be genuinely successful! One of the most common ways of overcoming this limitation is to learn how to delegate your work to other people. If you do this well, you can quickly build a strong and successful team of people, well able to meet the demands that others place. This is why delegation is such an important skill, and is one that you absolutely have to learn!

the job effectively? *Is this a task that I should delegate? If you can answer "yes" to at least some of the above questions, then it could well be worth delegating this job.Other factors that contribute to the delegability of a task include: 1.The project's timelines/deadlines. ·How much time is there available to do the job?·Is there time to redo the job if it's not done properly the first time? ·What are the consequences of not completing the job on time? 2.Your expectations or goals for the project Success Magazine (20)

or task(s), including: ·How important is it that the results are of the highest possible quality? ·Is an "adequate" result good enough? ·Would a failure be crucial? ·How much would failure impact other things? The Who and How of Delegating Having decided to delegate a task there are some other factors to consider as well. To Whom Should You Delegate? The factors to consider here include: 1.The experience, knowledge and skills of the individual as they apply to the delegated task. ·What knowledge, skills and attitude does the person already have? ·Do you have time and resources to provide any training needed? 2.The individual's preferred work style. ·How independent is the person? ·What does he or she want from his or her job?re his or her long-term goals and interest, and how do these align with thework proposed? 3.The current workload of this person. ·Does the person have time to take on more work?·Will you delegating this task require reshuffling of other responsibilities and workloads? When you first start to delegate to someone, you may notice that he or she takes longer than you do to complete tasks. This is because you are an expert in the field and the person you have delegated to is still learning. Taking on too Much Are you a person who has a hard time saying "no" to people? Or, you might be a micromanager: Someone who insists on controlling or doing all of the work themselves, because they can't trust anyone else to do it correctly. Either way, taking on too much is a poor use of your time, and it can get you a reputation for producing rushed, sloppy work. 7. Thriving on "Busy" Some people get a rush from being busy. Dealing with Unhappy Customers

Turning a Challenge into an Opportunity One of Ali's most important clients has just walked into his office, unannounced. Ali stands up with a smile on his face, ready to greet him, when the dam bursts - his client explodes into an angry tirade because. Ali s organization has failed to make a delivery on time.Because of this, the client was unable to demonstrate a key product, which meant that he lost an important sale.Ali does his best to reason with his client, but nothing he says helps the situation. The client only gets angrier, shouting accusations and spiraling further into a rage. Within a few minutes he walks out, vowing never to do business with Ali's organization again. Many of us have to deal with angry or unhappy clients as part of our roles, and it's never easy. But if we know what to say and, more importantly, how to say it, we may be able to save the situation. In fact, we can even end up with a better relationship with our client than we had before. In this article we'll explore how to deal with angry or difficult customers. We'll highlight specific tips and techniques that you can use to smooth things over. Step One: Adjust Your Mindset Once you're aware that your client is unhappy then your first priority is to put yourself into a customer service mindset. This means that you set aside any feelings you might have that the situation isn't your fault, or that your client has made a mistake, or that he or she is giving you unfair. All that matters is that you realize that your customer or client is upset, and that it's up to you to solve the problem. Adjust your mindset so that you're giving 100 percent of your focus to your client, and to the current situation. Step Two: Listen Actively The most important step in the whole of

this process is listening actively to what your client or customer is saying - he wants to be heard, and to air his grievances. Start the dialogue with a neutral statement, such as, "Let's go over what happened," or "Please tell me why you're upset."This subtly creates a partnership between you and your client, and lets him know that you're ready to

Your most unhappy customers are your greatest source of learning Bill Gates listen. Resist the temptation to try to solve the situation right away, or to jump to conclusions about what happened. Instead, let your client tell you his story. As he's talking, don't plan out what you're going to say when he's done - this isn't active listening! Also, don't allow anything to interrupt this conversation. Give your client all of your attention. Step Three: Repeat Their Concerns Once he's had time to explain why he's upset, repeat his concerns so you're sure that you're addressing the right issue. If you need to, ask questions to make sure that you've identified the problem correctly.Use calm, objective wording. For example, "As I understand it, you are, quite rightly, upset because we didn't deliver the samples that we promised you last week."Repeating the problem shows Success Magazine(22)

the customer you were listening, which can help lower his anger and stress levels. More than this, it helps you agree on the problem that needs to be solved. Step Four: Be Empathic and Apologize Once you're sure that you understand your client's concerns,be empathic. Show her you understand why she's upset. And, make sure that your body language also communicates this understanding and empathy. For example, you could say, "I understand why you're upset. I would be too. I'm very sorry that we didn't get the samples to you on time, especially since it's caused these problems." Step Five: Present a Solution There are two ways to do this. If you feel that you know what will make your client happy, tell her how you'd like to correct the situation. You could say, "I know you need these samples by tomorrow to show to your own customers. I will call our other clients to see if they have extras that they can spareif if they do,Explain every step that you're going to take to fix the problem to your client If she has contacted you by phone, make sure that she has your name and contact details. This gives her a feeling of control because she can get hold of you again if she needs to.Once the situation has been resolved, follow up with your client over the next few days to make sure that she's happy with the resolution. Whenever you can, go above and beyond her expectations. Step Six: Take Action and Follow-up Once you've both agreed on a solution, you need to take action immediately. at your offices no later than 5:00pm this evening." Step Seven: Use the Feedback Your last step is to reduce the risk of the situation happening again. If you haven't already done so, identify how the problem started in the first place.

Why Do Projects Fail? Learning How to Avoid Project Failure

probably all think of projects W ethatcanhave "failed" perhaps processes

got worse rather than better, maybe they were cancelled because of cost overruns. How do you know when and why a project has failed? In many cases, the reason for failure is obvious. Definition of Project Failure A project is considered a failure when it has not delivered what was required, in line with expectations. Therefore, in order to succeed, a project must deliver to cost, to quality, and on time; and it must deliver the benefits presented in the business case. Reasons for Project Failure Here are some of the main reasons why projects fail: The wrong business requirements have been addressed If your project is set up to deliver the "wrong thing," it may be considered a failure even if everything is delivered on time, within budget, and to the required quality. It's not possible to deliver the business case If your business case can't be delivered, then you have an impossible task. e For example, once you've promised to deliver a new airport baggage management

system, airlines may schedule additional flights for shortly after the system's launch. If the baggage system doesn't work, or if it has major problems during testing, it may be hard to convince senior managers to allow the project to be delayed, because they will have to give up promised increased revenue. When you write your business case, make sure you think through the project requirements in detail, and identify what's needed to ensure that you can deliver those requirements. Don't just list assumptions make sure you explore them thoroughly. Once deadlines, requirements, and budgets are set, expectations are much more difficult to change! Governance is poor As project manager, you're involved in the day-to-day running of the project, but governance groups can take a step back and look at the project from a different perspective. They can ask difficult questions about progress and performance. They may see things that you've overlooked. Project managers don't usually have any influence over who their project sponsor is. Sponsors either self-select, or they're chosen because of their position in the Success Magazine(23)

organization. Implementation is poor Delivering change is hard, and not everything is in your control. Therefore, being competent isn't enough for good implementation, but it's a good start! There are a lot of tools available to help you. People lose focus on the project's benefits. To avoid this problem, adopt a benefits management approach throughout the life of the project, and remember the need to deliver the required benefits when you're planning and delivering your project. The environment changes This is probably the trickiest area. If the business's needs change, then your business case can become outdated before you've actually completed the project. You may have to review your original requirements and goals partway through the project to decide how to proceed, and this may result in changing the scope of your project or even canceling the project altogether! If you're working in an environment that's changing fast, you can help reduce the risks by doing the following: Making timely decisions If the project is clearly not going to be able to deliver the revised requirements, don't ignore this. The sooner you communicate this, and the sooner you make a decision about the project's future, the better. C o n s i d e r i n g s m a l l e r p ro j e c t s It's more difficult to change direction in a large cruise ship than in a tugboat. Delivering projects in smaller pieces is not always appropriate, but it's worth considering. Managing expectations Just because you cancel a project does not automatically mean that the project is considered a failure. This depends on many factors, including how you manage the involvement of key project stakeholders in the decision-making process.

Giving Back religion is humanitarianism which is the basis of M yevery religion in the world, says the most admired

philanthropist of Pakistan, A living legend an example of devotion an inspiration an institution Abdul Sattar Edhi. Edhi is a mobile institution ready to respond anxious to comfort and console the anguished souls. Endurance, perseverance, patience, struggle, sympathy and compassion along with sacrifice of his personal comforts, are the important elements on which rests the philosophy of Abdul Sattar Edhi. Dr. Abdul Sattar Edhi, NI, or Maulana Edhi, is a prominent philanthropist, social activist, public figure and an humanitarian. He is the founder and head of the Edhi Foundation, a non-profit social welfare organization in Pakistan. Together with his wife, Bilquis Edhi, he received the 1986 Ramon Magsaysay Award for Public Service. He is also the recipient of the Lenin Peace Prize and the Balzan Prize. In 2006, Institute of Business Administration Pakistan conferred an honoris causa degree of Doctor of Social Service Management for his services. In September 2010, Edhi was also awarded an honorary degree of Doctorate by the University of Bedfordshire. In 1985 Edhi received the Nishan-e-Imtiaz from the Government of Pakistan. Born in 1928 in Bantva a small town in Kathiawar (a former district of the state of Gujrat in India), Interestingly, it is said that his nickname was Roti (bread) when he was young because of his appearance. The residents of orphanages call him Nana (maternal grandfather). Generally, for Pakistani public, there is only one Edhi i.e., Abdul Sattar Edhi. It is said that when Edhi was 11 years old, his mother got paralyzed and subsequently became mentally instable. Apparently that was the first shock Edhi got, but he recovered from the pain and devoted completely for well-being and care of his ailing mother this covered feeding, cleaning, bathing and changing clothes. Unfortunately, despite his best efforts, his mother s health kept on deteriorating, further aggravating young Edhi s misery. Edhi was 19 when his mother passed away. His mother s prolonged illness and early death left an irreparable mark on Edhi s memory. He could not continue his formal studies under the circumstances. However, he rose to the occasion and converted his early-age-suffering in an evergrowing ambition to strive for charitable work. Edhi was 19 years old when he and his family migrated and settled in Pakistan after independence in 1947. To make a living in the new socioeconomic reality, Edhi started as a peddler and later became a commission agent selling cloth in Karachi s

wholesale market. After a while Edhi established a free dispensary [free diagnosis and provision of medicine] with the support of some of his community members. One can imagine how difficult it must have been for Edhi to develop his credibility and stick to the noble cause despite of meager resources. It is so easy to write a line about the transition but it must have been a monumental task to transform his solitary free dispensary into a Trust and later into a Foundation . In 1965 Edhi married Ms. Bilquis who worked as a nurse at the Edhi dispensary. Bilquis and Edhi have four children, two daughters and two sons. Mrs. Bilquis Edhi manages child homes, maternity homes, girls hostels and nursing homes under the auspices of Edhi Foundation. Neither Edhi nor his wife Bilquis are on the payroll of the Edhi Foundation rather their subsistence depends upon the returns from the Government securities Edhi purchased many years ago. Edhi and his family reside in a tworoom apartment situated adjacent to the Edhi Foundation s headquarter in Karachi. Bilquis Edhi herself emerged as an equally effective social welfare activist and she has always balanced her professional life with her personal life. Although Edhi is a self-educated person, he has an instinctive feel of contemporary theories of Anthropology or Philosophy. He possesses the unique capability of reducing complex problems to simple forms, and producing workable practical solutions. His dress is as simple as his language, and working style. He is fond of destitute children and loves them like his own kith and kin. Finding those rare occasions to associate himself with them is a matter of immense pleasure for Edhi. He looks for such moments and whenever gets an opportunity to have their company, he fully enjoys it. Most probably this is the secret of his fine health even at the age of early seventy. The concept of self-reliance permeates into Edhi organization at every level. Edhi Foundation runs the world's largest ambulance service and operates free nursing homes, orphanages, clinics, women's shelters, and rehab centers for drug addicts and mentally ill individuals. It has run relief operations in Africa, Middle East, the Caucasus region, eastern Europe and US where it provided aid following the New Orleans hurricane of 2005. In November 2011, Edhi was recommended for a Nobel Peace prize by the Pakistani Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gillani. Edhi has a fleet of 400 Pakistan s best organized ambulance service. Edhi s vehicles are the first to arrite at the scene of an emergency. Edhi s achievements are unique in the sense that they are not funded by any religious, political group

During the past 60 years, Abdul Sattar Edhi has spent many sleepless nights ministering to the needs of his fellow Pakistanis. Whether they are peasants starving because of draught, babies abandoned on rubbish dumps or patients too poor to pay for their medical care Edhi s compassion encompasses them all. Edhi has established an extraordinary social welfare network that helps thousands of Pakistanis each day Edhi says simply "It is a twenty four hours job". Edhi s network is open round the clock without observing a single holiday. A short, strongly built man in early 70 s with a flowing beard and ready for any kind of emergency work round the clock. Throughout Edhi has been leading the simplest life. He is a teetotaller. He is ready to fly any where across the borders to reach any natural calamity or disaster within the shortest possible time. His food intake is generally based on taking pieces of stale bread in the morning , and raw cooked vegetables during a lunch-break. As a child, he was given two paisas daily by his mother. He was directed to spend one on himself, and give away the other to some one less fortunate than him. He never forgot that simple lesson. To this day, the Edhi Foundation continues to grow in both size and service, and is currently the largest welfare organization in Pakistan. Since its inception, the Edhi Foundation has rescued over 20,000 abandoned infants, rehabilitated over 50,000 orphans and has trained over 40,000 nurses. It also runs over three hundred and thirty welfare centers in rural and urban Pakistan which operate as food kitchens, rehabilitation homes, shelters for abandoned women and children and clinics for the mentally handicapped. The Edhi Foundation is also the leading source of emergency medical assistance in Pakistan with the world's largest fleet of over eighteen hundred ambulances, twenty eight rescue boats and two airplanes. Additionally, they also run twenty-four hour medical dispensaries, a missing persons hot line and own the largest morgue in Pakistan. The Edhi Foundation has also worked extensively in international relief, including donating to victims of Hurricane Katrina, cyclone relief in Bangladesh, aid to tsunami-impacted regions in 2003 and ambulance services in Afghanistan. The Edhi foundation has centers in the United States, Japan, the United Arab Emirates, Canada and the United Kingdom. To this day, he owns two pairs of clothes, has never taken a salary from his organization and

lives in a small two bedroom apartment over his clinic in Karachi. Due to his unassuming nature and immense contribution to the well being of his fellow citizens, Mr. Edhi has become a folk hero for many Pakistanis. The people of Pakistan are indebted to him for his unwavering commitment to the social welfare of Pakistani's and share in his vision for a brighter future for our country. Mr. Edhi is a living testament to the innumerable good that can come out of one mans vision and dedication to achieving a better life for his fellow citizens. Edhi established his first welfare centre and then the Bilqis Edhi Trust with a mere Rs. 5000. What started as a one-man show operating from a single room in Karachi is now the Edhi Foundation, the largest welfare organization in Pakistan. The foundation has over 300 centers across the country, in big cities, small towns and remote rural areas, providing medical aid, family planning and emergency assistance. They own air ambulances, providing quick access to far-flung areas. Edhi is to Karachi what Mother Teresa was to the poor of Calcutta. Edhi and wife Bilquees have spent a lifetime working for people and their welfare work to date remains unparalleled in Pakistan. They are both very private people who shun publicity. They have had little formal education, and are totally committed to the cause of helping the poor and needy.

Edhi plans mass campaigns against narcotics, illiteracy, population control and basic hygiene. Edhi's wife Bilquees works in the areas of maternity centre management. She runs 6 nursing training schools in Karachi , which provide basic training courses. These centres have so far trained over 40,000 qualified nurses. Some 20,000 abandoned babies have been saved and about a million babies have been delivered in the Edhi maternity homes. Bilquees also supervises the food that is supplied to the Edhi hospitals in Karachi . The total number of orphans in Edhi housing is 50,000 and Edhi's two daughters and one son assist in the running of the orphanages and the automation of these institutions. Edhi's vision is to create an institution that will carry on his life's work and survive for a long time to come. His dream is that of a Pakistan as a modern welfare state, which provides a safety net for the poor and needy while providing basic health and education with vocational skills. A welfare state Edhi feels is the only way to tackle Pakistan 's myriad social problems. He hopes that one day, Pakistan will be a model for other developing countries.

ere's an exercise for you: Imagine that it's possible for you to earn ten times your current annual wage. If you're earning PKR 25,000, imagine for a moment that it's possible for you to earn PKR 250,000, a 1000% increase. The first reaction of most people to that exercise is to smile briefly and then to begin thinking about why it isn't possible. One man said to me, "If you knew how many years it's taken for me to get to what I'm earning today you wouldn't be suggesting that I could earn ten times as much." Well, my response to that was"Don't sell yourself short." Mark Twain once wrote that there are a thousand excuses for every failure but never a good reason. The tragedy of the average person is that whereas his or her main preoccupation seems to be money, or the lack thereof, the average person has the inherent potential to earn far more than he or she is doing currently. The Purpose of a Business

The purpose of a business is to create and keep a customer in a cost effective way. Profits are not the purpose of a business. Profits are the result of skillful, successful, customer acquisition and customer service. Business is quite simple. It consists of three basic activities. First, you must find or create a product or service that people want, need and are willing to pay for. Second, you must market and sell the product or service in sufficient quantities to cover all your costs and make a profit. Third, you must manage and administer the people, money and business activities. Give yourself a grade on a scale of 1-10 in each of these three areas. Wherever you are weak, that will be the source of all your problems.

to launch, to step out in faith, with no guarantees of success. They are willing to face the prospect of temporary failure in the pursuit of opportunity, freedom, control and financial independence. Second, they have the quality of optimism. They have a positive mental attitude toward themselves and their business opportunities. They have the self-confidence to keep moving forward.Third, entrepreneurs are persistent. They never give up. As far as they are concerned, Failure is not an option!

Three Keys to a Successful Business

If you are not now in business, how do you determine what business to go into? Jim Collins, in his book Good to Great, analyzes more than 1000 companies to determine what makes a business great. He finds that the ideal business is one that has three qualities. First, it is something that you have a passion for. It is a product or service that you really like and enjoy, and you want other people to experience it as well. Second, a successful business is something in which you have the potential to be the best in your area. You may not be the best when you start, or at the moment, but you have the potential to be the best if you keep improving. Third, quality of a successful business is that you are offering a product or service that is highly profitable. If you do become the best in your field, you will make a lot of money as a result. The way you find a product or service is first, find something that you really like believe in, care about and want other people to use and enjoy. You must be excited about your product or service if you want your customers to become excited about it. Second, go to a potential customer for your product or service idea and ask him or her if they would buy it, and how much they would pay for it? This is called Fast, cheap, market research. The only true test is a customer test. When you ask a customer for their opinion, they will always tell you the truth. This can make or save you a fortune in the course of your business career. The three questions you ask before you introduce a new product or service, or start a business, are these. First, is there a market for your product or service? Is it something that is better, faster, or cheaper, or all three, than anything else available? Never assume. Always test your assumptions before you invest. Second, is the market large enough? Are there enough people to buy enough of what you sell to make it a prosperous business? Third, is the market concentrated enough? Is it possible for you to reach your market with conventional advertising or promotional methods? The key question in marketing is always this: What exactly is to be sold, and to whom is it to be sold, and how is it to be sold, and at what price, and how is it to be billed, produced, distributed and serviced? You can ask and answer this question over and over again throughout your business career.

Three Ways to Increase Sales

There are only three ways to increase sales: You can make more individual sales. You can make larger sales per customer. You can make more frequent sales to the same customer. You must be continually thinking of ways to do all three.

Three Qualities of Successful Entrepreneurs

There are three qualities of successful entrepreneurs, based on studies of many thousands of them. First, they have the courage Success Magazine (28)

business, and your success, will be determined by how well you satisfy your customers in comparison with other people who want to satisfy the same customers. The key measure of customer satisfaction is repeat business. This means that your customers come back and buy from you again and again. The ultimate question for customer satisfaction is this Would you recommend us to others? Your customer s answer to this question will tell you everything you need to know about the efficiency and effectiveness of your business operations and your products or services. Your goals in building your business are three. They are, 1) To get the customer to buy from you for the first time. This is the major focus of your sales and marketing efforts. 2) They are to get the customer to buy again because he or she was so satisfied with the first purchase. In reality, the second purchase is the most important because it is proof that you delivered on the promises you made to get the first sale. 3) Your customers bring their friends and recommend their friends, and refer their friends to buy from you as well. The primary purpose of marketing and advertising is to make selling unnecessary. If you have chosen your market accurately and you have advertised effectively, people will automatically say, That s for me! The rule is that good advertising sells. If your advertisement is a good advertisement, it will trigger immediate sales. If it does not trigger immediate sales, you must stop that advertising immediately and start advertising in a different way or a different place.

Four Strategic Marketing Principles 1.Specialization you must specialize in a particular

customer, or market area. It must be clear to you and to everyone who deals with you that this is your area of specialization. 2. Differentiation the title of the book Differentiate or Die is quite true. To be successful in business, you must have a competitive advantage, an area of superiority that makes you different and better than any of your competitors. Your competitive advantage must be something that your customer wants, needs, values and it willing to pay for. This is often called your value offering. It is what makes you the only supplier for the customers you have chosen to serve. Sometimes it is called your area of excellence. Finally, in differentiation, you need a Unique Selling Proposition. This is something that you do or offer that no one else in the world can offer to your customers. As Jack Welch of General Electric said, If you don t have competitive advantage, don t compete. Your ability to develop a competitive advantage, a unique selling proposition, is the key to your success in business. 3.Segmentation this is the process of identifying your ideal customers, the customers who will most appreciate the

product or service in which you specialize, and the way in which your product or service is superior to anyone else s. 4.Concentration this requires that you concentrate all of your sales, marketing and business efforts on contacting and selling exactly those customers who can most benefit and enjoy from what it is you do better than anyone else.

Seven Strategic Questions

There are seven strategic questions you need to ask in the process of specialization, differentiation, segmentation and concentration. Here they are: 1.Who is my customer? Who is my ideal customer? Who is my perfect customer? You must be absolutely clear about the age, income, education, tastes, history, background and desires of your ideal customer before you begin a business, and especially before you begin advertising. 2.Why does he or she buy? What need or desire does he or she have that causes him or her to buy in the first place? 3.What value, result or reward does he or she expect when he or she buys from me? What is my value offering to my customer? 4.What do you do better than anyone else? What is your competitive advantage? What makes you superior to any other choice the customer can make? 5.Who or what is your competition? Not only your direct competition, but any other use of the same amount of money, or any other way to satisfy the same need. You must be crystal clear about who you are competing against if you are going to compete successfully. 6.Why does your customer buy from your competitor? What value does he perceive that he receives from your competitor that he does not receive from you? How could you counteract this? 7.What does your customer need to be convinced of to buy from you, rather than from anyone else? Once you have answered the above questions, ask yourself, What are the 20% of your activities that could account for 80% of your results? Remember, only a small number of your decisions and actions account for most of your financial results. What are they? Seven Key Result Areas of Selling There are seven steps to selling more of your product or service. 1. Prospecting this is the process of lead generation. Where are your prospects? Who are they? How do you get to them? 2. Establishing rapport your ability to build trust, credibility and confidence in your prospective customer is the key to making the sale. 3. Identifying needs accurately this is the process of asking focused, targeted questions to make sure that you fully understand what your customer wants and needs and is willing to pay for. 4. Presenting this is where you show, teach and explain the benefits of what you sell. You focus on what your product does rather than what your product is. 5. Answering objections this is where you answer the normal and natural concerns that prospects have about price and capability. 6. Closing the sale you must learn how to ask for the order and tell the prospect exactly what he or she has to do to

Editor s Choice complete the sale. 7. Getting resales and referrals this is the acid test of success. Do your customers buy from you again, and recommend you to their friends and associates? This is the key to the future. The Law of Three says that there are three activities that account for 90% of your sales results. They are prospecting, presenting and closing. All sales activities are essential, but prospecting, presenting and closing are the keys. All your business problems will arise from a weakness in one of these three areas. The good news is that these are all learnable skills. You can become excellent in prospecting, presenting and closing, and you must commit yourself to excellence in these areas if you want to build a successful, profitable business. The Marketing Mix There are seven parts of the marketing mix that you must continually think about and revise in the face of fast-changing market conditions.

continually ask this question, If I were not now doing what I am doing, knowing what I now know, would I get into it again today? Is there any part of your business, your product, price, promotion, place, packaging, positioning or people that, knowing what you now know, you would not start up again today, if you had to do it over? It takes tremendous courage to admit that you have made a mistake, or that you are doing the wrong thing based on the current market. But facts are facts. If you would not get into it again today, your only question is, How do I get out of this, and how fast? The only measure of any business activity is this: Is it working? Are you getting results? Are you generating sales, revenues and positive cash flow? If you are not, be prepared to change or even abandon the product, service or activity. In your business, there are only two types of activities revenue and expense. You should only invest money in your business to increase revenues. To increase sales.

What exactly prospects, methods of sales and advertising, services, cash flow

does it do to improve the life or work of your customers? Is this the right product for you, and for your market, at this time? 2. Price how much do you charge, and how do you charge it? Could there be a better way to price and charge for your products? 3. Promotion these are your methods of marketing, advertising and selling. What revisions do you need to make in your promotional activities to increase the sales of your products or services? 4. Place where exactly do you sell and deliver your product? Could there be a better place? 5. Packaging this refers to the external appearance of your product or service, your business, your way your people dress and groom, and every visual image that your customers see or experience. 95% of the first impression that you make on your customers will be visual, and the visual appearance can often determine whether you make the sale or not. 6. Positioning how are you positioned in your customers mind? How do they think about you when you are not there? What do they say about you when they think of you? What words do you trigger in your customers mind when your name is brought up? 7. People who are the key people in your business who deal with customers? Who are your key salespeople? Who are your key service people? The fact is that people do not buy products or services; they buy the people who sell those products or services. Sometimes, one change in your key people can change your entire business. One of the most important business skills you will ever learn is called Zero-Based Thinking. In zero-based thinking, you

and people. Remember, 20% of your activities will account for 80% of your results. That is where you must focus and concentrate. Second, profitability examine every activity of your business to determine the most profitable things you sell or do. What is number one? What is the second most profitable? What is the third most profitable? You must know, with unerring accuracy, where your best profits are coming from so you can do more of those things. Third, efficiency keep asking yourself, If I could only do one thing all day long, what one activity would it be? What one activity would have the greatest impact on sales, revenues and cash flow? Whatever your answer to that question, focus on that single-mindedly every single day.

The Road to Wealth

Your key to success on your road to wealth is very simple. Itis to add value. All success in life, and in every area, comes from adding value in some way. The more value you add, the more you will be able to capture some of that value for yourself, in the form of commissions, profits and ultimately business success. You add value by finding a product or service that people want and need, and then by offering that product and service in a quality and quantity that people are willing to pay for. You sell it effectively, deliver it efficiently and service your customers in an excellent way. The way to wealth is, and always has been, your ability to start and build a successful business.Fortunately, if you can drive a car, you can learn how to be a successful entrepreneur. You can start a business and put yourself on the road to wealth for the rest of your life. And I hope you do.

Why You Should Start Your Own Business Today Six reasons to become an entrepreneur Ahmed Bashir was 53 when the bad news hit: His department was being moved offshore. Since joining the company eight years earlier, he had worked his way up to a solid position in middle management with a decent salary and great benefits. Now, he was out of a job. Having spent his entire adult life in corporate positions, he knew he could go job hunting. But this was the fifth time he d had a secure position shot out from under him, whether through downsizing, restructuring or other reorganization. With a wife and two teenagers to clothe and feed, he was no longer willing to trust his future to this game of corporate roulette. It was time to go into business for him. The Great Migration Across the country and around the world, legions of people are abandoning their dependence on big business and seeking independence through their own enterprises. I n a r e p o r t t i t l e d Wo r k , Entrepreneurship and Opportunity in 21st Century America, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce said, Millions of Americans are embracing entrepreneurship by running their own small businesses, through independent contracting or direct selling. The report also cited a recent Gallup poll finding that 61 percent of Americans now say they prefer to be their own bosses. 6 Benefits of Entrepreneurship 1. Job Security. Only a generation or two ago, going into business for yourself was considered risky, and the safest route was to get a good job in a large firm. Now, working for a traditional corporation has become the risky option. Working for yourself has become the new job security. If I m working for someone else, I m trading time for money, but I m not building any equity, says Duncan MacPherson, co-founder and co-CEO of Pareto Systems, a consulting firm. As an entrepreneur, I m the master of my own destiny. 2. Freedom.People love the benefits of

working for themselves and enjoy the freedom they gain from designing their own prosperity. You get to choose when you work, how you work and with whom you work. Best of all, you don t have to make the agonizing choice between time for family and time for business. 3. Flexibility. It doesn't matter if you're in a big city or small town. Entrepreneurship is an equal-opportunity employer. E-mail, cheap teleconferencing and a new generation of Web tools make it possible to run a fully competitive business from a home desktop. As a home-based businessperson, you can

expand your business to Chicago, San Francisco, Hong Kong and London and still make the soccer game. 4. Make More Money. There is far greater opportunity to make money by building your own business than by working for someone else s. Jeffrey Gitomer, bestselling author of theÊLittle Red Book of SellingÊand theÊLittle Gold Book of YES! Attitude. When you re in business for yourself, you write your own history, you write your own success story, you write your own legacy and most important, you write your own paycheck. Being in business for yourself gives you the opportunity to work your heart out for something you love. 5. A Life of Greater Impact. In the Decipher study, 84 percent of respondents said they would be more passionate about their work if they owned their own business. The No. 1 reason they gave for wanting to work for themselves: to be more passionate about my work life. Success Magazine (31)

6. A Second Career. The nation s million baby boomers are just starting to reach retirement age, yet they re realizing that they can t afford to retire. What s more, they don t want to. Dr. Mary Furlong, author ofÊTurning Silver into Gold, says, Boomers are looking for ways to give back. They are taking the reins of their own futures and redefining their lives. They want work that reflects their values and identity; they want to make a difference. A landmark study by MetLife Foundation and Civic Ventures found that 50 percent of Americans in their 50s and 60s want to do work that matters. Taking the Plunge Leaving the rat race is not as daunting as it may seem, says author Dan Clements in his guide to worklife balance,ÊEscape 101. You ll look back in later years and marvel at how easy it was and how much you gained for so little cost. So what does it take? First, let s look at what it doesn t take. You don t need an MBA or high-powered business background, and you don t need to be rich or to take a second mortgage on your home. Some self-owned business opportunities require expertise, such as consulting, or can take significant capital investment and possibly training, such as real estate investing and franchises; some can be started on a shoestring and prove quite lucrative, including direct selling and online opportunities. Many of the greatest entrepreneurs of our time began with no advanced degrees and hardly any startup capital. But make no mistake about it: What you save in cash capital you will make up for in sweat equity and passion. The major investment in most self-owned businesses is investment of one s self in the form of time, focus and persistence. You don t need to be a genius at negotiation or a whiz at numbers. You need a burning desire and determination fueled by a strong dose of passion!

Using the Power How Should You Delegate? Use the folowing principles to delegate successfully: 1.Clearly articulate the desired outcome. Begin with the end in mind and specify the desired results. 2.Clearly identify constraints and boundaries. Where are the lines of a u t h o r i t y, r e s p o n s i b i l i t y a n d accountability? Should the person: ·Wait to be told what to do? ·Ask what to do? ·Recommend what should be done, and then act? ·Act, and then report results immediately? ·Initiate action, and then report periodically? 3.Where possible, include people in the delegation process. Empower them to decide what tasks are to be delegated to them and when. 4.Match the amount of responsibility with the amount of authority. Understand that you can delegate some responsibility, however you can't delegate away ultimate accountability. The buck stops with you! 5.Delegate to the lowest possible organizational level. This also increases workplace efficiency, and helps to develop people. 6.Provide adequate support, and be available to answer questions. Ensure the project's success through ongoing

communication and monitoring as well as provision of resources and credit. 7.Focus on results. Concern yourself with what is accomplished, rather than detailing Allow the person to control his or her own methods and processes. This facilitates success and trust. 8.Avoid "upward delegation". If there is a problem, don't allow the person to shift responsibility for the task back to you: ask for recommended solutions; and don't simply provide an answer. 9.Build motivation and commitment. Discuss how success will impact financial rewards, future opportunities, informal recognition, and other desirable consequences. Provide recognition where deserved. 10.Establish and maintain control. ·Discuss timelines and deadlines. ·Agree on a schedule of checkpoints at which you'll review project progress. Make adjustments as necessary. Take time to review all submitted work. Keeping Control Now, once you have worked through the above steps, make sure you brief your team member appropriately. Take time to explain why they were chosen for the job, what's expected from them during the project, the goals you have for the project, all timelines and deadlines and the resources on which they can draw. And agree a schedule for checking-in with progress updates.Lastly, make sure that the team member knows that you want

to know if any problems occur, and that you are available for any questions or guidance needed as the work progresses. We all know that as managers, we shouldn't micro-manage. However, this doesn't mean we must abdicate control altogether: In delegating effectively, we have to find the sometimes-difficult balance between giving enough space for people to use their abilities to best effect, while still monitoring and supporting closely enough to ensure that the job is done correctly and effectively. The Importance of Full Acceptance When delegated work is delivered back to you, set aside enough time to review it thoroughly If possible, only accept good quality, fully-complete work. If you accept work you are not satisfied with, your team member does not learn to do the job properly. Worse than this, you accept a whole new tranche of work that you will probably need to complete yourself. Not only does this overload you, it means that you don't have the time to do your own job properly. Make sure to both recognize and reward the effort. As a leader, you should get in the practice of complimenting members of your team every time you are impressed by what they have done. This effort on your part will go a long way toward building team member's self-confidence and efficiency, both of which will be improved on the next delegated task; hence, you both win.

Water Therapy:What Are The Steps?

In today s world, the trend of zero figures is on the hit list of almost all people. "At the C-Suite level, they don't want to talk about social media because they don't understand it," one executive admitted.

Success Watch Guide

A wrist is a terrible thing to waste

Whether you're looking for an inexpensive time-teller or a solid-gold investment, start off by strapping on our essential guide. This might come as news, but your watch doesn't need to be encrusted with diamonds, or have sixteen dials, or tell you what the surf is like in Malaysia right now. It needs to sync up with your lifestyle. In other words, are you throwing on your pinstripes and heading to the firm every morning, or are you hopping on a lift to head up the mountain? Once you answer that question, you'll have taken the most important step in deciding what kind of watch is right for you. 1. A Wrist Is a Terrible Thing to Waste:-We understand perfectly well that the phone in your pocket tells the time. That's cool and all, but we still think you should strap on a watch. A watch is the one piece of man jewelry (yeah, we just said "man jewelry") that we can fully get behind. Not only does it punctuate an outfit; it also says something about who you are or, at least, who you aspire to be. So forget about technological advances for a moment. Think of a watch as you would a tie: Who cares if it's not purely functional? 2. It Only Looks Complicated If you invest in a serious timepiece, you ought to know

what's under the hood. Get hip to these watch terms and you'll sound like an industry pro. Complication:-Any function that goes beyond timekeeping. Could be an annual calendar; could be a stopwatch. Movement:-All those bits and pieces inside that run the thing. Self-Winding:-A type of mechanical watch, containing a rotor on a pivot, that's wound by the day-to-day movements of the wearer's wrist. 3. Syncing Up Your Watch Is Not Just a Matter of Time Like any other piece in your wardrobe, your watch needs to make sense with the rest of what you're wearing. Here's what you should keep in mind. A:-It may sound oldfashioned, but when wearing a leather-strap watch, you're always safe matching the strap to your shoes brown and brown, black and black. B:-If you sport a distinct style let's say you're into the whole prepster thing, or maybe you're a minimalist guy keep it consistent. Your watch should be of that style, too. C:-A watch with a plain black or white face and a leather strap or a steel bracelet will go with everything. D:-Finally, if you're heading to a black-tie event, make sure you've got a formal-minded watch. Leave the dual-compass. waterproof rock at home.

Dressing

like a million bucks. The thing's got to fit right, or else there's no point in wearing it. Question is, what's the right fit, and how do you get it? A. Take It from the Top A good suit should hug your shoulders, not slouch off them. Most guys think they're a size larger than they are say, a 42 regular instead of a 40. When buying a suit, go ahead and try sizing down. When you pull on the jacket, there should be firmness to it. You should snap to attention and stand taller. If it doesn't fit right in the shoulders, don't buy it. B. Lose the Flab Think about the width of the sleeves. The result of sliming down the sleeves and trimming excess fabric is always great. It cuts a mean figure. C. Show Some Cuff Your suit sleeves should end just above the hinges of your wrists, so a quarter to half inch of shirt cuff shows. It's like the frame on a painting the elegant finishing touch. D. Taper, Taper, Taper Your jacket should contour to your body. Have a tailor nip it at the sides. This will accentuate your shoulders whether you've got strong ones or not. E. Break It Down We like flat-front pants, cut slim, with very little break at the ankle. This produces a long, clean look. Your pants should just clip the tops of your shoes, not bunch up over them.

Suit up Properly Whether you're an office guy who needs to look sharp for the competition, or a creative type who dresses up because he likes to, the suit is the basic building block of looking good. It's a timeless, ever adaptable, sometimes maligned, but never improved uniform. Consider the roots of that word: uni, as in a universally good idea to save your ass from the danger of too much choice; form, as in the opposite of formless, sloppy, or unfocused. We'll get to the specifics of lapel widths and armholes and vents and how to do it right, but let's first agree that this is where dressing like a man begins. More Than Ever, It's About Fit That's our mantra. Doesn't matter what kind of suit you're investing in, whether it's 5000 or 50,000, flannel or seersucker, two-button or three. we've seen men in cheap but well-tailored suits who look

businessmanagement books. The Richest Man in Babylon by George S. Clason(BNP Books, 2007)

The Richest Man in Babylon began in 1926 as a series of pamphlets, the most famous ones later compiled into one of the bestloved money guides of all time. The book begins with two men realizing that, while they lived a meager existence, one of their childhood friends had become known as the wealthiest man in Babylon. Despite growing up in similar circumstances, their friend seemed to have

Read these, Achieve more. Out of hundreds, the Chief Editor of SUCCESS has narrowed my list to 5 mustread books for achievers. We chose books that take a comprehensive approach to money, life and personal development because we know that one-dimensional success really isn't success at all. We hope our list opens your eyes to something new, inspires you to pick up that volume you've always meant to read or to re-read a favorite classic. If you have suggestions on what we didn't include, we want to hear from you. We encourage you to find a book that interests you and carve out a few minutes every day to read at least a few pages. You'll be amazed at the difference it will make in your journey toward success! How to Win Friends & Influence People by Dale Carnegie (Pocket Books, 1998) First published in 1937 How to Win Friends

and Influence People was an overnight success with staying power. Today, this book is regarded as one of the all-time best for its lessons on dealing with people. The chapter titles seem, at first, a little manipulative: "Six ways to make people like you," "12 ways to win people to your way of thinking." But the reality of Carnegie's teachings is that none will work if the intent is manipulation. The word "genuine" appears repeatedly throughout the book. How to Win Friends and Influence Peopleis packed with anecdotes from historical leaders and lessons learned or taught by some of history's greatest businessmen, making the read as interesting as it is enlightening. Carnegie's book is a classic. Though he credits many people for inspiring his ideas, his methods are the foundation for many of today's personal-development and

created a life of gold while they barely scratched out a living. The situation is all too familiar even today. And like the men who'd come to the realization that they'd failed to think beyond the day at hand, readers have the opportunity to sit at the feet of the richest man in Babylon and learn how to build wealth. They learn how to plan for the future, make wise investments and how to view money as a tool rather than a measure of success. Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill (Aventine Press, 2004) Napoleon Hill, inspired by business legend Andrew Carnegie, spent 20 years of his life studying the lives of some of history's most successful people. The culmination of his research was the in-depth series,The Laws of Success. In 1937, Hill published another book,Think and Grow Rich, founded on the same philosophies of success. This book condensed the wealth of knowledge he's accumulated into 13 principles for successful living. Shorter and perhaps easier to get through than its multivolume predecessor,Think and Grow RichÊis as applicable today as it was when it was first released. More than 30 million Success Magazine (40)

copies of Think and Grow Rich have been bought by business students, entrepreneurs and goal-setters around the world.Think and Grow Rich is a timeless classic that should be read by everyone interested in improving their lives and reaching their goals. The 9 Steps to Financial Freedom by Suze Orman (Crown, 1997) As a financial expert, Suze Orman offers advice on the nuts and bolts of managing money. But whether you're watching her on television or reading her advice in. The Oprah Magazine, or in one of her bestselling books, such as 9 Steps to Financial Freedom, her message is clear: Wealth is an attitude and money isn't the key to acquiring true financial freedom. In this acclaimed book, Orman challenges readers to face their financial fears and acknowledge the importance of planning for the future. With a three-pronged approach, Orman tackles the mental, physical and spiritual issues that keep people from reaching financial freedom. Also available in audio format, 9 Steps to Financial Freedom encourages personal growth while offering the education necessary to begin the process of building a rich life. The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen R. Covey (Free Press, 1989)

While Stephen Covey wasn't the first to write a book on becoming a better, more effective person, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People marked the beginning of a revitalized interest in personal development. With a 15th anniversary edition released in 2004 and more than 15 million copies sold, this book has helped millions change their perspective and their lives.Unlike many authors of books in this genre, Covey doesn't promise a simple, quick fix for creating a better life. In fact, mastering the seven habits he outlines could take a lifetime. The habits are divided into three sections: Private Victory, Public Victory and Renewal. Private Victory focuses on the individual's view of himself. The first three habits are: becoming proactive, beginning with the end in mind, and putting first things first. These habits will challenge you to take responsibility for your thoughts, beliefs and actions. The Public Victory section focuses on creating meaningful, mutually beneficial relationships. And because being effective requires energy and focus, the seventh habit, "Sharpening the Saw," encourages you to engage in activities that promote mental and physical renewal.
