MASTERS THESIS BUILDING RESILIENCE THROUGH ADAPTABLE ARCHITECTURE This project intends to repurpose the dilapidated Mount Crawford Prison site as a resilient recreational centre for Miramar, Wellington. The design harnesses and exploits the spatial, formal and programmatic opportunities of a Bath House to deliver Mount Crawford with a new - inclusive, restorative and flexible infrastructure (for the provision of water) within its immediate and wider context. As an urban and architectural gesture, this design acts as a catalyst for resilience in the wake of an imminent earthquake transforming Miramar from a suburb to an emergent sub centre. It preemptively addresses the aftermath of a disastrous quake through the adaptability of the Bath House programme as a place for bathing to Miramar. It asks how can architecture be a medium for facilitating resilience through the sub-centre within a disaster prone context?

URBAN STREET HOW DOES ARCHITECTURE PROMPT THE BODY TO MOVE?
Explorations throughout this project narrowed it down to- Through visibility and this was further refined into the idea of GLIMPSES for this final stage of the project. Throughout the intervention one can get glimpses of the other parts of the design encouraging them to want to go there, hence- behing prompted to MOVE through the site.

TECHNICAL DRAWINGS
The intent of this design was to seem light and floating whilst pulling the user in with its organic forms. The floor acts as a strong diaphragm effectively transferring the forces through the thin circular hollow columns. The roof details show how the wave-like membrane roof allows for drainage and skylights over the spaces inside.

CHRISTCHURCH EARTHQUAKE MUSEUM
New Zealanders are pioneering people. In the face of the loss of all amenities like in an earthquake it is hope that brings us together as a community to restart, renew, rebuild. This design promotes resilience as an icon of recovery after the Christchurch earthquake drawing inspiration from the RESTART projectShipping container mall design in Christchurch. The structure and design of the building have been integrated so as to exhibit the qualities of shipping container architecture to create an inviting building promoting a sense of community.

URBAN WINERY
HARVEST FESTIVAL IS ON!!
To design an urban winery that draws from patterns around the city. The patterns used in this project were those of the cable wires using by the electric buses in Wellington. The presentation for this project was inspired from Manga comics that only use black and white lines to portray their story similar to the black lines in the cloudy white skies of Wellington

IT’S HARVEST FESTIVAL IN WELLINGTON WHERE EVERYONE AROUND THE CITY AND COUNTRY GATHERS AT WELLINGTON’S URBAN CHATEAU- BASED AT THE CORNER OF WAKEFIELD STREET AND CHAFFERS STREET TO CELEBRATE THE YEARLY HARVEST OF THE WINE AT THE URBAN VINEYARD. THIS BUILDING IS IMPORTANT NOT JUST BECAUSE IT IS THE FIRST URBAN WINERY IN WELLINGTON BUT ALSO BECAUSE IT PAYS HOMAGE TO THE HISTORIC TROLLEYBUS SYSTEM OF WELLINGTON WHICH CLOSED IN 2017 AFTER APPROXIMATELY 165 YEARS! SO WHAT BROUGHT ABOUT THE DESIGN OF THIS BUILDING?...
THIS IS THE MAIN ENTRANCE OF THE BUILDING FACING CHAFFERS STREET...
THE METAL ‘SLEEVE’ AROUND THE BUILDING IS REMINISCENT OF THE CONNECTIONS FOR THE CABLES.
SECOND FLOOR
AND THE JITTERED BEAMS AT THE FRONT WERE INSPIRED FROM A COLLAGE OF THE LAYOUT OF SUCH CABLES
FIRST FLOOR GROUND FLOOR
... INFACT LOOK! IT ACTUALLY HANGS OFF THE BUILDING JUST LIKE THE CABLES OF THE TROLLEY BUS SYSTEM DID!
06 RAILWAY STATION
The Wellington Hospital is a key location in Wellington and considering the amount of public visiting the site a light rail system has been proposed to reduce traffic flows and aid public transport considering the site is by the Hospital it would be more profitable to have a plant shop on the site as part of the programme one that customers can buy flowers from for the patients they’re visiting. An additional cafe would be a good getaway from the cold technical hospital enviroment.
