AGGIE NEWS: LDN rice farmers receive P4-M hybrid rice seeds from DA-10

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY

- The Department of Agriculture - Regional Field Office 10 (DA-RFO 10) under the helm of Regional Executive Director Carlene C. Collado, distributes hybrid rice seeds to farmers in Salvador, Lanao del Norte on May 22-23, 2023.

RED Collado shared, funded under the National Rice Program, the agency has allocated a total of 800 bags of hybrid rice seeds worth P4 million and handed them over to the local government unit (LGU).

The beneficiaries are registered in the Registry System for Basic Sectors in Agriculture (RSBSA), in which a farmer with 1 hectare received 1 sack (15 kilos) of hybrid rice seeds for wet season planting.

At the same time, the Rice Seed Monitoring System (RSMS) was introduced to farmers, which is a digital monitoring system created by the Philippine Rice Research Institute (PhilRice).

It aims to help efficiently monitor the distributed rice seeds and collect, combine, process, and analyze reliable and nearly real-time data regarding the positioning and distribution of DAprovided rice seeds for rice growers in an area.

Rice farmer Ernesto V. Torilla of Poblacion, Salvador, Lanao del Norte expressed his appreciation for the agency’s aid in increasing the production of hybrid rice for the local farmers in their area.

“Dako kayo ako pasalamat sa tabang [hybrid rice seeds] nga gihatag sa DA-10. Makatabang kini sa pagdugang sa produksiyon sa hybrid rice alang sa mga lokal nga mag-uuma sa among lugar,” Torilla said.

The said activity will also be conducted in other riceproducing areas in Bukidnon province.# (MPMTablon)

Why we can be confident in our life

“So, you also are now in anguish. But I will see you again, and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy away from you. On that day, you will not question me about anything. Amen, amen, I say to you, whatever you ask the Father in my name he will give you.” (Jn 16,22-23) becoming a better person who knows how to take advantage of our defects and defeats, our weaknesses and limitations as a launching pad to develop the needed virtues.

With these words of Christ, we have every reason to feel confident and at peace in our life even if we cannot help but get unavoidably involved in life’s complexities that can give rise to worries, anxieties, and other forms of human suffering.

NORMA N. PACHECO BUREAU CHIEF 0919-097-9024/0929-714-6599 mind of Christ who, when he fell a number of times on his way to Calvary, never let go of the cross. We have to learn to take refuge in our dignity as children of God who are assured to God’s help. We have to strengthen our sense of being children of God who always takes care of us.

Let’s just strengthen our faith and keep our piety vibrant for only then can we manage to make these very reassuring words of Christ effective in our life. With this condition, we can afford to be hopeful and confident.

That way, our weaknesses get transformed into some newly developed strengths, validating what St. Paul once said that it is “when I am weak that I am strong.” (2 Cor 12,10) The secret, of course, is to make our weakness as the very motive to go to God who gives us all the strength.

In this regard, having a strong faith means that we follow Christ who pursued his redemptive work all the way to the end, that is, to death on the cross, without running away. Even if on the way to Calvary he fell at least three times, as tradition tells us, he would just get up and drag himself toward his crucifixion.

With this condition, we can be like a good sportsman who would always train himself for his sport and play the game bent on winning though losses can also take place, and yet would still go on playing his game.

With that attitude, marked by confidence and courage, we can continue

We too should not be hindered by our stumbles and defeats in life. They should not separate us from God. Rather, like a little child who runs to the strong arms to his father when he falls, we should go to God as quickly as possible since he knows what to do with our failures.

How Caloocan's Bagong Silang became biggest barangay in PH

Fifty-two years ago, or in 1971, the administration of then president Ferdinand E. Marcos Sr. created Barrio Bagong Silang from the former Tala Estate in Novaliches, North Caloocan City, bordering with San Jose del Monte, Marilao and Meycauayan, Bulacan, and Montalban, now Rodriguez town in Rizal.

The vast Tala Estate was one of the original four estates or haciendas that composed the former town of Novaliches when it was created in 1855, first as a part of Bulacan (18551858), then of the province of Manila (1858-1901) and then of Rizal (1901-1903).

Like any other barrio in Novaliches in the 1950s1970s, Bagong Silang was sparsely populated. It had very few houses made of nipa and bamboo materials, with the surroundings abounding with tall cogon and talahib (large weeds), grasses, fruit trees, banana, vegetable plants, and other forest growths.

Bagong Silang became a regular barangay after the issuance by Marcos of Presidential Decree No. 557 on Sept. 21, 1974, which amended the Revised Barrio Charter and replaced the name "barrio" with "baran- gay."

That’s where we can manage to be always confident in life even if we encounter the unavoidable falls and defeats. Let’s not stay long feeling bad and sad whenever we fall. That’s not a good condition for us. We are meant to be happy and at peace, full of confidence in the constant help and protection of our Father God, so we can continue to do a lot of good and to carry out our duties and responsibilities. For this also, we have to learn how to abandon things that we cannot handle well on the hands of God our Father. He is all too willing to bear all things for our sake, if we ourselves are unable to bear them.

Today, Bagong Silang is considered the biggest in the country in terms of population of over 245,000 and a land area of 574 hectares, according to the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA).

While the barangay is actually under the administrative jurisdiction and supervision of the city of Caloocan, Bagong Silang belongs to the Roman Catholic Diocese of Novaliches (RCDN) as decreed in 2002 by the Vatican through then Pope and now Saint John Paul II.

Taking cognizance of the rapid increase in the population of the barangay, former Caloocan City Mayor and now Rep. Oscar Malapitan of the city's first district filed House Bill No. 5819 in Congress seeking to divide Bagong Silang into six barangays.

Malapitan said the proposed law has passed final approval in the House of Representatives and has been transmitted to the Senate, where the Committee on Local Government chaired by Senator J.V. Ejercito has approved and submitted it for plenary deliberations and corresponding approval.

By the way, very little

Severino C. Samonte is known of the fact that sometime in the early part of the 1970s, then-First Lady Imelda R. Marcos proposed to the erstwhile National Housing Corp. (NHC) the full-scale development of a big portion of the Tala Estate into a plantation of various tree species suitable for conversion into logs.

Under the proposal, the timber to be derived from the plantation would be used by the NHC, which was established in Tala by the national government in 1968 to manufacture housing components needed for the construction of lowcost housing for homeless Filipino families in Metro Manila and other developing regions of the country.

The proposed tree plantation, however, did not prosper beyond the preparation of seedlings to be planted because of a number of intervening events that haunted the second Marcos administration.

The NHC was already producing various housing components like posts, doors, windows, roofing, and flooring materials, etc.,
