What Summer Classes Bring?

By Jojie R. Honculada Teacher III Labinay National High School Ozamiz City

In the Philippines before the pandemic had stricken, summer classes provide students with an opportunity to accelerate their coursework, catch up on missed credits, and enjoy a more flexible schedule. Additionally, taking classes during the summer months can also help students graduate earlier or free up their schedule for internships, part-time jobs, or other extracurricular activities during the regular academic year. Attending summer classes can provide nonacademic benefits such as doing something constructive during the summer, especially for students who have limited summer job opportunities. It is also important to note that community college students often need to take summer classes in order to fulfill transfer requirements, as different majors and institutions have diverse requirements. It is prudent for students to consider enrolling in summer classes as part of their academic plan, taking into account both the academic and non-academic benefits that such classes can offer.

In the our country, summer classes are also common in most higher education institutions. Summer classes in the Philippines offer similar benefits to what is mentioned above, such as accelerating coursework and fulfilling academic requirements. Additionally, summer classes in the Philippines can also provide opportunities for students to improve their grades or retake failed courses. Then the pandemic came causing a lot of changes in the educational platform. Classes shifted to distance learning and after more or less 2 years, face to face classes are conducted but with changes in time. Summer has become a part of the class months causing students and teachers to adjust so much because of the high temperature of the sun. As a teacher, I do hope that classes be back to the normal months wherein students as well as the teachers could not experience the heat of the sun and the warmness of the classrooms during the day.
