OF THE BEST

Definition, statement styles and refined texture are among the hair trends forecast for this autumn. Rumbie & Co stylist Rumbie Mutsiwa predicts this season will see people willingly embracing these types of drastic changes when it comes to their look. “After last year, people are feeling that life is too short not to try something new,” Rumbie says. Our experts break down six of the moment new season styles.

1FRENCH CUT The tres trendy style is a softened, textured take on a long bob.

The experts agree that it’s flattering on a range of face shapes and hair textures, but particularly fine to medium strands. Belcastro Hair owner and creative director Michael Belcastro says this look’s appeal lies in it being “simple and fuss-free”. “To style a French cut, apply a light texturising spray as well as a leavein conditioner to the ends before tipping your head upside down and blow drying with a diffuser,” Michael says. “You can also add a dry wax texture spray for hold.”

3BLUNT BOB This is a bold statement style and comes with the added bonus of making the hair look sharp and glossy.

The secret, according to Megan? “Shape, shape, shape!” Sitting anywhere from under the ear lobes to above the shoulders, a professional can advise you on the most flattering length. Megan adds a little styling care is necessary to maintain this hairstyle’s striking look. “Use a smoothing cream and paddle brush to achieve a nice straight blowdry, and finish with a smoothing serum and a little hairspray,” she says.

2HEATLESS TEXTURE Call it the 2020 hairstyle hangover; enhanced natural texture is taking precedence over heat-styled hair looks.

Curl specialist Rumbie says hydration-oriented products are a must when forgoing dryers and irons. “Use a great leave-in conditioner, particularly as hair may be dehydrated after summer,” she advises. In Awe Salon owner and creative director Megan Panozzo recommends a few no-heat techniques for shape and lift. “Apply a curl cream to damp hair and twist the strands around your finger as it air dries,” Megan suggests. “Or add a texture spray, like a salt spray or a spray gel.”

4VOLUMINOUS CURLS If you have naturally curly hair, now is the moment to let it shine.

But first, make sure your cut is in sync with your curl style. “The priority is balancing volume with the right cut for your face shape,” Michael says. As for styling, Rumbie says perfecting voluminous curls requires a combination of quality nourishing products and a willingness to dig your hands in. “Put your fingers into your scalp and do some circular massaging motions to break up the curls and create volume. Then you can pat and style the curls as you like,” she advises.

5LONG FRINGE A striking way to instantly transform your look, this season’s elongated version works particularly well with layered hairstyles.

A long fringe is a relatively small change, but be prepared for the extra work to keep it tamed and fresh. “A blow-dry spray creates smooth hold and finish on a long fringe, while a great workable hairspray keeps it in place,” Megan says. “Dry shampoo is also great for refreshing a fringe between washes.”

6BUZZ CUT “The buzz cut is a guaranteed head-turner — the only thing you need to pull it off is confidence,” Michael says.

Theoretically suitable for all hair types, it works best with thicker hair. Head shape, along with facial features, are also a major consideration. (Because there’s nowhere to hide!) But that doesn’t mean throwing out the haircare routine along with your locks. “I still recommend shampooing the remaining short hair and, more importantly, the scalp,” Michael says. “You can also apply a texturising paste mixed with a drop of hair oil for a smooth yet glossy finish.”
