TALKING PODCASTS wi
Oldie Goodie co-host Nicky Buckley
AS TOLD TO ERIN MILLER
Open conversations
“It’s a podcast that focuses on the good, the bad and the sometimes tough topics surrounding ageing and getting older. We like to explore the positive sides of ageing, what it’s like to have perspective and wisdom but also open up conversations around themes that should be more easily spoken about, but are sometimes seen to be a little taboo — like death and dying, including helping your loved ones to have a good death, and also destigmatising sex in your older years.”
Current challenges
“The cost of living now is really of great concern to our older Australians, and our aged care industry also needs a lot of work. Our elders have lived and contributed so much to society their whole lives, so we need to work on finding ways to help them live out their later years in absolute comfort, finding happiness and joy wherever possible.”
— Nicky Buckley PUMPED PODCAST
HAYLEY FLOWERS AND SOPHIE LAVENDER Sydney mothers Hayley and Sophie met when their babies were six weeks old. They formed a close friendship that led to them working together on this podcast that explores the challenges of motherhood. Topics range from postnatal depression to mastitis and baby fi rst aid with a diverse range of guests.
Keep discovering
“Every interview was enlightening to me, and we thoroughly enjoyed interviewing all our guests. Sexologist Chantelle Otten probably intrigued me the most and opened my eyes to many areas of sex within the older generation. I loved the ease and openness of how she spoke — totally destigmatising what really is a natural part of life and ageing.”
Lessons learnt
“I learnt so much from our guests. The saddest takeout for me came from Ian Smith, who played Harold on Neighbours. He drove home the message that many older people (including himself) simply feel invisible, and I think it’s up to all of us to make a concerted effort to change this for as many elderly people as possible.”
Stay healthy
“I believe it is so important to listen to your body and prioritise your own health and happiness as we are never any good to anyone if we aren’t fit and healthy and happy ourselves. Don’t wait until it’s too late to get issues resolved like your hips, knees or eyes. Keep moving and being active, find time for yourself, find a project or hobby that you look forward to doing. Keep connected with people of all ages — we can learn from the young and they can learn from us.” LET ME TELL YOU
SARAH MALIK AND CAITLIN CHANG The SBS Voices podcast tells the powerful and raw stories of eight ordinary Australians. The two hosts cover a wide range of topics with the guests such as life as a migrant, class divides in Australian society and exploring sexuality. The frank and honest nature of the podcast really draws listeners in and it is refreshing to hear the guests share their family stories and the life events that have defi ned them.
