PROBLEMS

INCREASE IN FLOODING

RISE IN URBANIZATION

DEPLETING PLANTS AND WILDLIFE

DECREASE IN AIR & WATER QULAITY

sea level rise due to climate change

the indutrial age led to urban development resulting in depeletion of the wetlands

urbanization negatively impacted nature by harming and uprooting it

exploitation of nature led to the decrease in CO2 in soil, warmer water temp, increase in pH

INACCESSIBLE AND BROKEN INFRASTRUCTURE marsh discovery trail needs renovation to increase human accessibility and protection of wildlife and plants

OBJECTIVES

increased O2 content

decrease in water temperature

flood control

16

wind control on trail

safe nesting

increase CO2 content in soil

better observation and accessibility

For this project, we had to renovate the carport of the James Rose Center to create a multipurpose room that could be used for various activities. In my intervention, I wanted to create a dynamic and deconstructive roof that partialy acts as a facade providing seperation from the exterior. This helps to establish ground and roof as well as interior and exterior relationship. Since JRC follows the zen architectural style, I wanted to continue following that and bring a part of nature inside the multipurpose area where the layer of tree also acts a roof.

James Rose was a Buddhist follower; knowing that I wanted to implement the 6 senses of Buddhism through my intervention. The multipupose room engulfed in trees is pleasing to see which accounts for sight, the implementation of rain chains to collect rainwater creats a sweet sound which is soothing to the ears accounts for sound, the sense of calm and serenity when engulfed in nature and wooden material in the disorted roof design that creates a sense of chaos promotes the feel element, the fragrance of rustic wood and fresh nature accounts for smell, and the creation of mental images after experincing the above accounts from the mind element.

Parts of the roof are translucent that allow direct sunlight to enter the multi-puropse room which directs circulation within the space.

STARTING POINT: THE LIGHTBOX The light box was divided into 2 parts: part one was inspired from the Thermal Vals and second part involves the “louvre” inspired from the Abacus House. I implemented idea one in my intervention in the catles keep keeping the interiors relatively dark to experince the light illuminated by the rain coming in through the slit apertures in the roof of the tunnel intervention.

CONCEPT Light is the material of projection, and water the material of reflection-what happens at the moment they collide? It creates an immesive and emotional experience via a cascading rain and light. The mix of the loud sound of falling water droplets in the live space and the harsh contrast of white drops in a dark space definitely captivatesthe viewers. Inspired from the Therme Vals project, I wanted to create an experience for the users in an enclosed dark space with the effect of shadow created by the reflection of light. The site receives heavy rainfall , so, I used the environmental conditions of the site to my advantage to implement my design. This project also focuses on sustainabilty by focusing on underground rain-water collection.

SECTION 1 The drawing indicates the slits in the roof where the section cut is taken from; this the roof aperture that lets sunlight and rain to enter the tunnel. The section also shows the show of the dancing water from the water feature whihc is created by the refraction and reflection of raiwater and sunlight. The underground water collector/ storage adds to the sustainbility aspect to the project. 33

PLAN This drawing indicates the circulation parth of the visitors and the section cuts. As shows, there are only two entry/exit points in the intervention. The openings are close to the entrance of the castle keep so that visitors are curious and intrigues by the tunnel next to them and will go ahead to explore it.

ELEVATION This drawing shows the entrance/exit to the tunnel. Keeps were built within castles during the Middle Ages and they were used as a refuge or a last resort should the rest of the castle fall to enemies. The tunnel/alley appears to be a camouflage as I wanted to retain and maintain the keep’s historical aspect as it is an important part of the British culture.
