Editorial...
Dear Prajapati Readers,
Greetings to all those who have been faithful in reading the Prajapati magazine. Though it is delayed, yet we want to wish belated Happy New Year wishes to all of you and pray to God for His best blessings, good health and His direction in your life. We believe that the year has started on a bright note and you are already striving hard for your exams and other assignment. We wish you success according to God's purpose and plan in your life. This year, the main theme of the prajapati volume has been according to the 10 commandments from the Bible. Therefore, the theme of the first issue is based on the first 2 commandments. They are: Commandment 1: You shall have no other gods before me. Commandment 2: You shall not make for yourself an idol Some of you may find these commandments very puzzling but in fact these commandments are a means to understand the very nature and character of who God is. People of the Bible and those who follow Him believe in monotheism. Monotheism means worshipping only one God. People of the Old Testament and the New testament find it so natural and normal to worship and please only One God instead of running to different gods for different needs at different times. Secondly, God Himself is the creator and sustainer of the whole world, does not expect human beings to worship images of idols of gods. Because God cannot be limited in any image. He is beyond our imagination. Therefore, we need not try to draw a picture of Him with our limited understanding. Hence these above two commandments were very mandatory as the Jews and later the people of the New Testament began worshipping God of the Bible. Hope the themes will seem as simple as possible for you to have a deeper and proper understanding about God and yourself. Wish you happy reading!.
God Bless.

Sujoy and his Father Sujoy was very happy. He quickened his steps while returning from school. Yes, he almost ran home because he was in great hurry to meet his father who had just returned home early that morning. Sujoy's father worked in a huge ship which was always adrift in the ocean visiting different countries. Therefore, father had very less time to spend at home. He came home after long time and so Sujoy was eager to be with his father and spend time with him. Sujoy' loved to hear stories from his father about his adventures while at sea. He really admired father for his courage. Father always came home with gifts too. For Sujoy, his father was the most handsome, capable, awe inspiring and above all most loving and caring person. As Sujoy stumbled into the front yard of his house, he was surprised to see another stranger at conversation with his father. Father introduced him as uncle Jim who was a colleague of his and was their new neighbor for a while. Uncle Jim seemed very happy to meet sujoy too. As evening grew into night, Sujoy snuggled with his father in the sofa. Father loved him and drew him close to his heart. Sujoy could see that father was indeed looking at him with love and concern. That moment 3

was so intense and wonderful that Sujoy felt it was a dream. He used to miss his dad so very much. He was eager to hear his stories and also see the gifts that he has brought for him. True to his expectations, father brought out many gifts from his suitcase. There was a bat and ball, there was a ipod, and then there was a huge toy car with remote. Sujoy clapped his hands with joy and wonder. Wow! What a great father he had ! To his utter amazement father brought out something that Sujoy had longed for days now. It was a DVD with lots of games in it. Now Sujoy can s pend more time in playing games in the computer. Yeeepee. But his joy was shot lived. The next question that father asked forced sujoy to calm down. Father set aside all the gifts and DVDs, cleared his throat and asked in his deep voice, "Son, I would like to know how you are doing in your studies, so get me your progress report. " "Ah! What a hard question". Sujoy thought to himself. He was not in a mood now to show his Report Card from school. He has even hidden it from his mom. But now that father is asking he has to face it.
When he handed the Report Card to his father hesitatingly, the next moment his father's expression changed. There were three red marks in the Report. Sujoy has failed in three subjects! Worst of all sujoy had hidden it from mother by making some lame excuses. Looking at father's serious face Sujoy knew that perhaps he was about to be beaten. But father did not raise his hand or his voice. He just spoke sternly in his deep, rugged voice. "Sujoy, perhaps you have not worked hard enough this time and therefore you have failed in three very important subjects. Added to that you have hidden the results from your mother. Therefore, till the next semester exam are over, you are not going to play with the toys and gifts that I have brought for you, specially the DVD with the games you will not touch at all. " Oh, that felt worse than a slap on the face. Sujoy badly wanted to play the games. Semester exams was still six months away. When he looked pleadingly at his father hoping for some reduction in the punishment, but it was in vain. Father then turned his attention to other things. That night, sujoy felt vey dejected and angry. Yes he had failed in three subjects because he had neglected his studies. He had felt that playing was more important that preparing for exams. And so his marks had come down drastically. He avoided showing his report card to mom and made a fake signature too. That was a crime indeed. But he was caught now.

Sujoy longed to play the games, therefore suddenly his father seemed like a monster and a very selfish man. Worse of all this time father has come on a long vacation from his ship. He would go only after several months. All these months he longed for his father but now that his father was here and seemed to interfere in his life, sujoy did not like his father. What should Sujoy do now? Sujoy wanted to find a way to escape his father's resolution and have his own way. So he disobeyed his commands and every evening went to Uncle Jim's house to play games in his computer. Uncle Jim was unaware about Sujoy's father demands from his son. One day when Sujoy was in Uncle Jim's house in his absence some bad people who wanted to harm Uncle Jim broke into his house and stole some valuable possession. Thinking that Sujoy was Uncle Jim's son they beat him up and left the house tying him up into a chair. Sujoy looked with dismay as they took all the DVDs with them. Fortunately, Sujoy was rescued before it was too late. Sujoy survived with only a broken arm and few minor injuries. Sujoy realized that if he had stayed at home he would not have been mistaken as Uncle Jim's son. But he was wrong in hating his father, and taking his freedom into his own hands. It was father who called the police and had the miscreants arrested. He was very angry with the people who had harmed his only son. Sujoy was sorry for playing hide and seek with his father who loved him so much. 6

Abigail was going to the Zoo with her family. She had waited long for this day and today she was very happy. Abigail was 3 yrs of age and was very excited to go inside the zoo. She had heard from her Papa that the Zoo was a very huge place with many kinds of animals and birds who live there. That morning when Abigail arrived with her Papa, Mama and baby sister Sukoon, grand pa and grand ma, her cousins Shiney and Simun and the rest of the family, she was awe struck at the huge crowd and busy Zoo. The Zoo seemed to be full of people and vendors who were trying to sell pop corns, candy, cucumber etc. Abigail asked Papa to buy her candy but alas! Eatables were not allowed inside the zoo. 7

So Abigail and her family went inside the zoo after papa bought tickets for all of them. It was going to be very fun. Papa told Abigail to hold his hand tightly so that she would not get lost in the crowd. Everybody was excited to see wild animals which are only found in the deep forest. Abigail saw the Bengal tiger, white tiger, leopard, bear, elephant, giraffe, monkey, zebra, different kind of fish, various kinds of birds and many other reptiles and animals. It was amazing to see God's creativity in creating so many varieties. As they were going from place to place inside the zoo, suddenly Papa realized that Abigail was not holding his hand. In fact Abigail was nowhere to be found. Everyone started searching for her frantically. Mama was upset so also Papa. Grand Ma and Grand Pa and all the uncle and aunties were equally upset and panicky. Meanwhile, Abigail was caught up with the crowd. She had not obeyed Papa's word but she had casually slipped her little hand away from his hand. As a result she drifted away in the crowd and mistakenly she was holding some other hand. When she realized her blunder, Abigail started crying and calling out for her Papa and Mama. Suddenly a man and a woman came forward and started to soothe her by saying that they were her parents. Abigail saw that they were indeed 8
not her parents but strangers, claiming that she was their child. By now, a small crowd had gathered around Abigail and the couple. 3 year old Abigail was trying her best to convey to people that these were not her parents. Suddenly, out of the crowd came a loud voice calling out "Abigail !" Abigail stood still. That was her father's voice. Yes, he was calling out her name. Abigail immediately replied, "Papa". Instantaneously Papa was beside her and within a minute, her mama and the whole family gathered around her. Abigail was happy that her father could search and find her and she inturn could recognize his voice very distinctly. What a great joy it was to be reunited with her father and not fall into the hands of a false father or mother. God too is happy when we worship and obey only Him and not go astray to other distractions.

DO FISH NEED TO DRINK ? The answer is yes and no - saltwater fish drink, freshwater fish do not. The reasons are all down to a matter of physics and a process known as osmosis. When two fluids of differing concentrations are separated by a membrane- in this case the skin of the fish - water always flows towards the more highly concentrated solution. The body fluid of freshwater fish is more highly concentrated then the surrounding water. Therefore, water is absorbed into the body through the skin and gills and the fish must actively excrete water, otherwise it will eventually explode. The opposite is true for saltwater fish. In their case, the surrounding water is more concentrated and draws water out of the fish. This means that the saltwater fish must actively take in water to avoid drying out. They take in water through their mouth, mucous membranes and gills. The salt is excreted by the gills before reaching the body. 10

DON'T WORRY BE HAPPY Worrying is feeling uneasy or being overly concerned about a situation or problem. With excessive worrying, your mind and body go into overdrive as you constantly focus on "what might happen." In the midst of excessive worrying, you may suffer with high anxiety -- even panic -- during waking hours. Many chronic worriers tell of feeling a sense of impending doom or unrealistic fears that only increase their worries. Ultra-sensitive to their environment and to the criticism of others, excessive worriers may see anything -- and anyone -- as a potential threat. Chronic worrying affects your daily life so much that it interferes with your appetite, lifestyle habits, relationships, sleep, and job performance. Many people who worry excessively are so anxietyridden that they seek relief in harmful lifestyle habits such as overeating, cigarette smoking, or using alcohol and drugs. Most of us worry unnecessarily about too many things. 12
It's almost as though we search for problems to give ourselves stress. The amazing news is that much of what we worry about doesn't matter at all! Take a look at these statistics about worry: 40% of all things that we worry about never come to pass. 30% of all our worries involve past decisions that cannot be changed. 12% focus on criticism from others who spoke because they felt inferior. 10% are related to our health, which gets worse when we worry. 8% of our worries could be described as "legitimate" causes for concern. Isn't that remarkable? Fewer than one "problem" in every ten that we worry about is a real concern. All the others are things that we can learn to see differently or eliminate. "Worry does not empty tomorrow of its sorrow, it empties today of its strength." - Corrie Ten Boom Bible says, 'Give all your worries to God because He cares for you' (1 Peter 5:7)

LITTLE GIRLS WISER THAN MEN
by Leo Tolstoy
IT WAS AN EARLY EASTER. Sledging was only just over; snow still lay in the yards; and water ran in streams down the village street. Two little girls from different houses happened to meet in a lane between two homesteads, where the dirty water after running through the farm-yards had formed a large puddle. One girl was very small, the other a little bigger. Their mothers had dressed them both in new frocks. The little one wore a blue frock the other a yellow print, and both had red kerchiefs on their heads. They had just come from church when they met, and first they showed each other their finery, and then they began to play. Soon the fancy took them to splash about in the water, and the smaller one was going to step into the puddle, shoes and all, when the elder checked her: 'Don't go in so, Malásha,' said she, 'your mother will scold you. I will take off my shoes and stockings, and you take off yours.' They did so, and then, picking up their skirts, began walking towards each other through the puddle. The water came up to Malásha's ankles, and she said: 'It is deep, Akoúlya, I'm afraid!' 'Come on,' replied the other. 'Don't be frightened. It won't get any deeper.' When they got near one another, Akoúlya said: 'Mind, Malásha, don't splash. Walk carefully!' 29

She had hardly said this, when Malásha plumped down her foot so that the water splashed right on to Akoúlya's frock. The frock was splashed, and so were Akoúlya's eyes and nose. When she saw the stains on her frock, she was angry and ran after Malásha to strike her. Malásha was frightened, and seeing that she had got herself into trouble, she scrambled out of the puddle, and prepared to run home. Just then Akoúlya's mother happened to be passing, and seeing that her daughter's skirt was splashed, and her sleeves dirty, she said: 'You naughty, dirty girl, what have you been doing?' 'Malásha did it on purpose,' replied the girl. At this Akoúlya's mother seized Malásha, and struck her on the back of her neck. Malásha began to howl so that she could be heard all down the street. Her mother came out. 'What are you beating my girl for?' said she; and began scolding her neighbour. One word led to another and they had an angry quarrel. The men came out and a crowd collected in the street, every one shouting and no one listening. They all went on quarrelling, till one gave another a push, and the affair had very nearly come to blows, when Akoúlya's old grandmother, stepping in among them, tried to calm them. 'What are you thinking of, friends? Is it right to behave so? On a day like this, too! It is a time for rejoicing, and not for such folly as this.' They would not listen to the old woman and nearly knocked her off her feet. And she would not have been
able to quiet the crowd, if it had not been for Akoúlya and Malásha themselves. While the women were abusing each other, Akoúlya had wiped the mud off her frock, and gone back to the puddle. She took a stone and began scraping away the earth in front of the puddle to make a channel through which the water could run out into the street. Presently Malásha joined her, and with a chip of wood helped her dig the channel. Just as the men were beginning to fight, the water from the little girls' channel ran streaming into the street towards the very place where the old woman was trying to pacify the men. The girls followed it; one running each side of the little stream. 'Catch it, Malásha! Catch it!' shouted Akoúlya; while Malásha could not speak for laughing. Highly delighted, and watching the chip float along on their stream, the little girls ran straight into the group of men; and the old woman, seeing them, said to the men: 'Are you not ashamed of yourselves? To go fighting on account of these lassies, when they themselves have forgotten all about it, and are playing happily together. Dear little souls! They are wiser than you!' The men looked at the little girls, and were ashamed, and, laughing at themselves, went back each to his own home. 'Except ye turn, and become as little children, ye shall in no wise enter into the kingdom of heaven.'

Haiti
Haiti, officially the Republic of Haiti, is a Caribbean country. Ayiti (land of high mountains) was the indigenous TaĂno or Amerindian name for the island. Haiti is on the western part of Hispaniola, the second largest island in the Greater Antilles. Haiti is the third largest country in the Caribbean behind Cuba and the Dominican Republic. Haiti has the second longest coastline (1,771 km/1,100 mi) in the Greater Antilles, Cuba having the longest. The total area of Haiti is 27,750 square kilometers and its capital is Port-auPrince. Haitian Creole and French are the official languages. Haiti was the first independent nation of Latin America and the Caribbean, the first black-led republic in the world, and the second republic in the Americas when it gained independence in 1804 as part of a 34
successful slave revolution lasting nearly a decade. The island has had a history of destructive earthquakes. A 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck Haiti on 12 January 2010 and devastated Port-au-Prince. The highest reliable death count was estimated at 220,000. The Presidential palace, Parliament and many other important structures were destroyed, along with countless homes and businesses, leaving hundreds of thousands of people homeless. The country has yet to recover from the 2010 earthquake. United States aid organizations have donated $2 billion. Combined with other international donations, these funds are intended to contribute to the rebuilding of the country. In October 2010 a cholera epidemic was identified. Three weeks later, hurricane Tomas worsened the situation. On October, 22 PAHO has observed 183 deaths, but it increased after the hurricane and WHO reported 1,415 deaths on November,20 and Haitian Ministry of Health reported 3,333 deaths and 148,787 infected persons on December, 26 . In 1925, Haiti was lush, with 60% of its original forest covering the lands and mountainous regions. Since then, the population has cut down an estimated 98% of its original forest cover for use as fuel for cook stoves, and in the process has destroyed fertile farmland soils, contributing to desertification. In addition to soil erosion, deforestation has caused periodic flooding. 35

85% of Haitians are primarily of African descent; the remaining 15-20% of the population are mostly of mixed-race background. Smaller minority groups include people of Western European (French, German, Polish, Portuguese and Spanish), Arab, Armenian, or Jewish origin. Adult literacy is variously reported as 52.9% [World Factbook] and 65.3% [United Nations]. Poverty has forced at least 225,000 Haitian children to work as restavecs (unpaid household servants); the United Nations considers this to be a modern-day form of slavery. Natural resources of Haiti include bauxite, copper, calcium carbonate, gold, marble and hydropower. Haiti contains relatively small amounts of gold, silver, antimony, tin, lignite, sulphur, coal, nickel, gypsum, limestone, manganese, marble, iron, tungsten, salt, clay, and various building stones. Bauxite had at one time been the country's second leading export. Half of the children in Haiti are unvaccinated; only 40% of the population has access to basic health care. Prior to the 2010 earthquake, nearly half of all Haitian deaths were attributed to HIV/AIDS, respiratory infections, meningitis and diarrheal diseases, according to the World Health Organization. The incidence of tuberculosis (TB) in Haiti is more than ten times as high as in the rest of Latin America. Approximately 30,000 people in Haiti suffer each year from malaria. Soccer is the most popular sport in Haiti with hundreds of small soccer clubs competing at the local level, and basketball is growing in popularity. 36

Water, water, everywhere‌ but where ?
One can live without food for almost a month but survive no longer than a week without water. Yet, although almost half of the world's population live in water-scarce countries, there actually is enough of this precious liquid for everyone. The UN recommends that a person needs minimum of 50 litres of water a day for drinking, washing, cooking and sanitation, which over a billion people do not have access to. According to UNESCO, the world's populations are appropriating 54% of all the accessible freshwater contained in rivers, lakes and underground aquifers. If per capita consumption of water resources continues to rise at its current rate, humankind could be using over 90% of all available freshwater within 25 years, leaving just 10% for all other living beings. Freshwater lakes and swamps account for a mere 0.29% of the Earth's freshwater. 20% of all freshwater is in one lake, Lake Baikal in Asia. Another 20% is stored in the Great Lakes, Huron, Michigan, and Superior. 38
Rivers hold only about 0.006% of total freshwater reserves. Mankind essentially uses only a drop in the bucket of the total available water supply. So where is all the water? Antarctica, holds about 75% of the world's fresh water (and 90% of the world's ice). In fact, almost 10 percent of the world's land mass is currently covered with glaciers, mostly in Antarctica and Greenland. But it will take more than a Zippo to melt it for daily use. Towing icebergs for fresh water is an old but often debated concept. Given that 9/10ths of an iceberg is underwater, it acts the same as a type of big barge. In the 1930s, Barnes Wallis suggested using tugs to tow large fabric bags - waterpods - to transport water at a fraction of the cost of building water tankers. (After all, today oil is transported by towing it in huge bags.) In the 1970s, Saudi Arabia considered towing icebergs. But where is the water ? Underground. For the United States, one crucial source is the huge underground reservoir which stretches from Texas to South Dakota, the 800-mile Ogallala aquifer. It provides an estimated third of all US irrigation water. In fact, 95% of the United States' fresh water is underground. In Libya, the Great Man Made River Project, as it's called, is pumping some 6 million cubic meters of water a day from aquifers in the desert, providing irrigation for 150 000 hectares of land. Many countries have turned to aquifers to quench peoples' thirst.

Scabies known colloquially as the seven-year itch, is a contagious skin infection that occurs among humans and other animals. It has been classified by the WHO as a water-related disease. It is caused by a tiny and usually not directly visible parasite, the mite Sarcoptes scabiei, which burrows under the host's skin, causing intense allergic itching. The infection in animals (caused by different but related mite species) is called sarcoptic mange. The disease may be transmitted from objects but is most often transmitted by direct skin-to-skin contact. Initial infections require four to six weeks to become symptomatic. Reinfection, however, may manifest symptoms within as little as 24 hours. What are scabies symptoms and signs ? Scabies produces a skin rash composed of small red bumps and blisters and affects specific areas of the body. Scabies may involve the webs between the fingers, the wrists and the backs of the elbows, the knees, around the waist and umbilicus, the sides and backs of the feet, the genital area, and the buttocks. The bumps (medically termed papules)
may contain blood crusts. It is helpful to know that not every bump is a bug. The scabies rash is often apparent on the head, face, neck, palms, and soles of the feet in infants and very young children but usually not in adults and older children. Treatment : Scabies infections need to be treated by a doctor. Call the doctor or dermatologist any time you have a skin itch or rash that will not go away, especially if the itch is worse at night and occurs around the wrists or in the webbed part of the fingers. If scabies is suspected, the doctor may scrape a small part of the affected skin and examine the scrapings under a microscope for signs of scabies mites. Doctors treat scabies by prescribing a medicated cream or lotion to kill the mites. The cream will need to be applied to the skin all over the body, not just the area with the rash, and usually must remain on the skin for 8 to 12 hours before it can be washed off. After applying it, don't wash your hands - scabies mites love the area between the fingers! You may want to apply the medication before going to bed, then wash it off in the morning. Most often, the treatment needs to be repeated in 1 week. Since scabies is highly contagious and can cause re-infestations, other members of your household should also be treated, even if they have no symptoms.

DISCOVERY :
How many stars are there in the sky ? With the naked eye and under favorable conditionsa moonless night well away from city lightssome 3000 stars can be seen in the sky. But one look through even a modest telescope reveals that many more stars exist, especially in the shimmering strip of the Milky Way. In fact, our galaxy alone contains about 200 billion stars. What are stars ? Stars are nothing other than suns. Just like our own Sun, they too are huge balls of incandescent gas, inside which nuclear fusion transforms hydrogen into helium. This process releases enormous amount of energy, which is why stars shine and radiate heat. It is only because stars are so far away that they appear in the night sky as no more than tiny points of light. In reality many stars are considerably larger than our Sun.
of the other constellations have their origins in Ancient Greece. In 1928, the International Astronomical Union finally drew up the list of 88 constellations and their boundaries which is still in use today. Some of the names given to constellations are Orion, Vega, Altair, Deneb, the great Bear, etc. What makes up the Zodiac ? When we talk about the Zodiac, we are referring to constellations through which the Sun moves in the course of the year. These constellations are mostly named after animals and cover an area about 14 degrees wide running above and below the Sun's apparent annual path across the heavens. Even though we cannot see these stars by day, they are still there, hidden by the brightness of the Sun. Originally there were 12 signs of Zodiac, but since the adoption of constellation boundaries defined by the International Astronomical Union in 1930, the Sun now passes through a 13th constellations- Ophiuchus, the serpent bearer. To be continued in next issue‌
Who named the constellations ? From the earliest times people arranged conspicuous stars in the night sky into patterns in which they believed they could see figures of living beings, gods or objects. For example, the 12 well known constellations which make up the zodiac date back to the Babylonians. Most 42

Do the stars influence our destiny? Astrologers claim that our destiny is influenced by the position of the Sun, Moon and the planets in relation to the stars. However, numerous research projects- some carried out according to criteria laid down jointly by astrologers and astronomers- have shown that such connections do not exist. When a daily horoscope in the newspaper seems unusually accurate it is because it is so cleverly composed that almost any reader can identify with it. However, astrologers may be simply trying to offer sensible advice to people who are in capable of dealing with everyday problems. Nevertheless, their work is based on a false doctrine and unscientific principles. (Taken from Readers Digest 1001, Science Questions answered Pg 20)
Factoids - Water World Water Day is celebrated on March, 22nd every year. One kilogram (2.5 pounds) of grain-fed beef needs at least 15 cubic mts of water, while a kilogram of cereals needs only up to three cubic mts. Between 6 and 9 million people die annually, of thirst. 70% of the water used worldwide is used for agriculture. Australia is the continent with the least rainfall, apart from Antarctica.

Causes of landslides Landslides occur when the stability of a slope changes from a stable to an unstable condition. Natural causes of landslides include: Groundwater (porewater) pressure acting to destabilize the slope Loss or absence of vertical vegetative structure, soil nutrients, and soil structure (e.g. after a wildfire)
OUR ENVIRONMENT:
Erosion of the toe of a slope by rivers or ocean waves Weakening of a slope through saturation by snowmelt, glaciers melting, or heavy rains Earthquakes adding loads to barely stable slope Earthquake-caused liquefaction destabilizing slopes Volcanic eruptions
LANDSLIDE A landslide or landslip is a geological phenomenon which includes a wide range of ground movement, such as rockfalls, deep failure of slopes and shallow debris flows, which can occur in offshore, coastal and onshore environments. Although the action of gravity is the primary driving force for a landslide to occur, there are other contributing factors affecting the original slope stability. 46
Landslides are aggravated by human activities too: Deforestation, cultivation and construction, which destabilize the already fragile slopes Vibrations from machinery or traffic Blasting Earthwork which alters the shape of a slope, or which imposes new loads on an existing slope In shallow soils, the removal of deep-rooted vegetation that binds colluvium to bedrock 47

Construction, agricultural or forestry activities (logging) which change the amount of water which infiltrates the soil. What is the effect of landslides on people lives ? Landslides kill people, destroy trees, crops and other plantations. This catastrophe could drastically affect everyone who lives near an elevated area. A single but relatively strong rainfall, thunderstorm, hurricane / tropical depression could make the soil erode, which will cause immense flooding, and will, definitely rage on the residents below. More so, in the case of crops, without a doubt, the floods that could be casued by landslides will tremendously damage them, if not totally wipe them out. However, all this can be prevented if illegal logging, and other unscrupulous practices against mother nature could be checked and controlled.

Forgiveness of Sins A missionary on one of the islands was sitting in his cool seaside hut one day when one of the village women came in, carrying a handful of dripping sand she had just picked up off the beach. "Do you know what this is?" she asked. "It looks like sand," said the missionary. "Do you know why I brought it here?" she asked. "No. I can't imagine why," the padre answered. "Well, these are my sins," the women explained. "My sins are as countless as the sands of the sea. How can I ever obtain forgiveness for all of them.?" "You got that sand down by the shore, didn't you?" said the missionary. "Well, take it back there, and pile it up into a heaping mound of sand at the water's edge. Then you sit back and watch the tide come in and slowly wash away the pile altogether. That is how God's forgiveness works."... In Isaiah 1:18 God says to the people: "Now, let's settle this matter. You are stained red with sin, but I will wash you as clean as snow. Although your stains are deep red, you will be as white as wool."

LAKE B AIKAL BAIKAL
Lake Baikal is the world's oldest lake,at 25 million years (possibly older). Located in the south of the Russian region of Siberia, between Irkutsk Oblast to the northwest and the Buryat Republic to the southeast, it is the most voluminous freshwater lake in the world, containing roughly 20% of the world's unfrozen surface fresh water. 50
At 1,642 m (5,387 ft), Lake Baikal is the deepest and among the clearest of all lakes in the world. Similar to Lake Tanganyika, Lake Baikal was formed as an ancient rift valley, having the typical long crescent shape with a surface area of 31,722 km2 (12,248 sq mi). Baikal is home to more than 1,700 species of plants and animals, two thirds of which can be found nowhere else in the world and was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996. It is also home to Buryat tribes who reside on the eastern side of Lake Baikal, rearing goats, camels, cattle and sheep, where the regional average temperatures vary from a minimum of -19 °C (-2 °F) in winter to maximum of 14 °C (57 °F) in summer. Lake Baikal is nicknamed "Older sister of Sister Lakes (Lake Khövsgöl and Lake Baikal)". Lake Baikal was known as the "North Sea" in historical Chinese texts.

The Call of the S alvation Salvation Oh! Whose call do I hear calling me from far or near With all pride and pain And He adds my name in the Holy Book Oh! When I fall out it the past And cant get out of the dark, He brings light into my world And takes away my past. Oh! When I cry out in sorrow Thinking all about tomorrow He sends out His angels To take away my sorrow Oh whose call do I hear calling me from far or near. When I commit sin and sin He forgives me with a cling He sheds His blood and die And makes me as His child In His holy book of life. Oh whose call do I hear calling me from far and near. AMAZING FACTS OF THE BIBLE :
The Ten Commandments The Ten Commandments were already in force long before they were officially given to Israel at Mount Sinai. In fact, they have existed since the creation of man. The Ten Commandments are God's spiritual laws (Rom. 7:12, 14). They are just as active as the physical laws of gravity and inertia. Just as breaking physical laws results in physical consequences, breaking spiritual laws results in spiritual consequences. Interesting Facts about the Ten Commandments are as follows: Fact 1 - The Ten Commandments were written by the hand of God in stone, in the form of two stone tablets. Fact 2 - In the Bible Exodus 31:18 refers to the tablets containing the Ten Commandments as the "Tablets of Testimony" because they give insight into the nature of God. Fact 3 - According to the Bible, there were two sets of the Ten Commandments. 54
Fact 4 - The first Ten Commandments, inscribed by God, were smashed by Moses when he was enraged by the sight of the Children of Israel worshiping the Golden Calf (Exodus 32:4) Fact 5 - The second set of the Ten Commandments were later cut by Moses and rewritten by God. Fact 6 - Commandment 1: You shall have no other gods before me. Fact 7 - Commandment 2: You shall not make for yourself an idol Fact 8 - Commandment 3: You shall not make wrongful use of the name of your God Fact 9 - Commandment 4: Remember the Sabbath and keep it holy Fact 10 - Commandment 5: Honor your father and mother Fact 11 - Commandment 6: You shall not murder Fact 12 - Commandment 7: You shall not commit adultery Fact 13 - Commandment 8: You shall not steal Fact 14 - Commandment 9: You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor Fact 15 - Commandment 10: You shall not covet your neighbor's wife. You shall not covet anything that belongs to your neighbor 55

God Vs the Golden Calf
Moses was up in the mountain for many days in the presence of God. Finally, Moses turned to leave; God spoke suddenly, "A terrible thing has happened! The people have forgotten their promises already. They are worshiping a golden calf." The people had waited and waited for Moses to come down from the mountain. When Moses still did not show up, they 58
decided he must be dead. Once again, they chose not to trust in God. They asked Moses' brother Aaron to make them another god. Aaron had taken their gold bracelets and rings. Using the melted gold he made them a golden calf. God became very angry. He told Moses, "I will punish them all. I will start over in making a special people." Moses begged God not to punish them. Then he started down the mountain. He carried the stone tablets God had given him. The closer Moses came to the camp, the more noise he heard. Then he saw the golden calf, gleaming in the sunshine. "You are a terrible people!" he screamed at them. The music stopped and the people stood still. "How could you do this after all the Lord has done for you!" Moses yelled. In his rage, he flung down the stones with God's handwriting on them. He dashed them onto the ground with a mighty crash. They broke into a thousand tiny pieces. Moses then went back up the mountain. God told Moses that the people of Israel did 59

not make Him smile like they used to. God was very, very disappointed. Moses pleaded with God to forgive the people of Israel. God said because Moses was the one asking, He would listen. Because God and Moses were friends, He would remember His promises to the people. Moses was best friends with God. He asked God, "Show me Your ways." God told him that he would die if God let him see and learn everything there is to know about God. It would be too much. God did say, however, that Moses could return to the top of Mount Sinai. There God would pass by so Moses could see more of God. This would be the closest anyone had ever come to God! Moses climbed back up the mountain. The Lord came down from the cloud to be with Moses. Moses fell onto the ground. God's glory was too great. Moses kept his eyes shut tight and said over and over again how great God was. Again he begged God to forgive the people and still make them His chosen children. God said He would. And then He made a great promise. For the second time, God
told Moses all the laws for the people. He promised to bring the people of Israel to the land He had told Abraham would belong to his children. God gave His rules and laws for the second time. Moses chiseled out the stone and God wrote down the Law again. Moses stayed up on the mountain forty days, just as He had the first time God gave him the Ten Commandments. After the forty days were over, Moses climbed down the cliffs. He came back to the camp. This time the people had kept their promise. They had waited for him to return. They had been good. Moses called all the people together and called out in a mighty voice, "You have a choice! All of you who want to live, raise your hands!" The crowd mumbled, "What does he mean?"

"Of course, we want to live!" "Yes, yes!" they called. They all raised their hands. "All those who want to die, raise your hands!" Moses called. The crowd quickly lowered their hands. A silence fell over them. They waited. Somewhere in the crowd a baby cried. "Today," Moses shouted, "you have said you choose life, not death. God wants to make a promise to you. He wants to give you food and water, good land and large flocks. This is life. He wants to give you peace. He will give you all these things if you obey His laws. "But if you do things on your own, if you grow proud, if you forget how God brought you out of Egypt, then you will be ruined! Do you believe me?" Moses paused. "Yes, Moses, we will obey!" the people shouted back. Moses bowed his head and prayed it would be so. He loved the people very much, even if they had caused him so much trouble. PERSONALITY :
Mary koM
Mangte Chungneijang Mary Kom, (born 1 March 1983 in Manipur), also known as MC Mary Kom, or simply Mary Kom, is an Indian boxer. She is a five-time World Boxing champion, and the only woman boxer to have won a medal in each one of the six world championships. She is the only Indian woman boxer to have qualified for the 2012 Summer Olympics, competing in the flyweight (51kg) category and won the bronze medal. She has also been ranked as No. 4 AIBA World Women's Ranking Flyweight category. Mary was born in Kangathei, Manipur. Her parents, Mangte Tonpa Kom and Mangte Akham Kom, worked in jhum fields. She is an ethnic Manipuri, also known as Meitei. Although she had a keen interest in athletics from childhood, it was the success of Dingko Singh that inspired her to become a boxer in 2000. 68
Kom initially tried to hide her interest in boxing from her family, since it was not considered a suitable sport for a woman. However, after her victory in the Manipur state women's boxing championship in 2000, her career became public; her father discovered his daughter's achievement through a photograph in a newspaper. After winning the regional championship in West Bengal, Kom began competing at the international level at the age of 18, only a year after she started boxing. Her international debut was at the first AIBA Women's World Boxing Championship in the United States, where she won a silver medal in the 48 kg weight category. She followed this with a gold medal in the 45 kg class at the second AIBA Women's World Boxing Championship in Turkey in 2002. In 2003, Kom won a gold medal in the 46 kg class - she would compete in this class for the next three years - at the Asian Women's Boxing Championship in India, and was awarded the national Arjuna Award for outstanding sporting achievement. In 2004, she won gold at the Women's Boxing World Cup in Norway, and in 2005 again won gold at the Asian Women's Boxing Championship in Taiwan and the AIBA Women's World Boxing Championship in Russia. The following year, she won gold at the Venus Women's Box Cup in Denmark and the AIBA Women's World Boxing Championship in India. In 2010, Kom won the gold medal at the Asian Women's Boxing Championship in Kazakhstan. In the 2010 Asian Games, she competed in the 51 kg class 69

Can the Cross be worshiped ? Part- 1 The Cross seems to have become a Christian symbol for many people to have it as a sacred possession. Some even associate with Idol and keep it in their worship place. We often think that perhaps carrying a cross will ward away evil or make Jesus Christ very happy. Some may even think that Cross is something to be worshipped. But the Bible clearly says in Exodus 20 that we should not worship any idols. So What is the Cross? The Cross is a wooden frame on which Lord Jesus Christ was nailed and hanged. Is that the reason why the Cross has to be worshipped by Christians? The Cross is symbolical of Jesus' death and victory over sin, but it literally should not be worshipped. Rather, the person who died on the cross is far more important than the wooden cross. Worshipping the Cross or lighting candles before the cross does not make it authentic. Instead it is same as idol worship and strictly forbidden in the Bible. Will it offend God if we do not worship the Cross? Cross is certainly a very sacred symbol because Lord Jesus died hanging on it. But the cross itself has no value if we do not acknowledge Lord Jesus Christ and obey His teachings. Without Him, the cross is useless and just a wooden frame. Therefore, God will be offended if cross is overemphasized and Jesus Christ is overlooked. Why was Jesus Christ hung anyway?..... catch up in the next issue. 71

GOD AND ME
...God is good... and He is able... My Testimony Psalm 127:1 says "Unless the Lord builds the house, those who build it labour in vain". My heart signifies the house here. It needed some very urgent repair and I was worried about it. God helped us to find the best advisors, best treatment places, provided us with everything that we needed to overcome the situation in life. On October 1st we as a family witnessed another miracle. Psalm 23:4(Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil for you are with me) made complete sense to me when I entered the operation theatre. During the procedure, I could hear a voice that was constantly encouraging me and saying that I am with you, I am in control of your life, Be still and know that I am God..Each problem of your body has been taken care off and it is over. I was at peace on hearing this and knew that it was God who spoke to me. Every day was a painful challenge for me, but I was able to overcome it through His strength 72
& healing power. As He has promised, God took over the circumstances and allowed things to get over in the same speed at which it had occurred in my life. By His amazing grace and wonderful power, I am healed and was able to come out of the hospital with much healing. Many servants of the LORD prayed for me and for my parents during the time of trouble. It was evident that because of prayers the healing could be seen in me. I praise and thank God for this wonderful blessing that has restored me and has sustained me thus far. He strengthened our family to pass through difficult times. All we had to do was to trust Him in faith and believe that all things are happening for our good (Rom 8:28). Now I'm growing stronger both physically and spiritually. I would take this opportunity to encourage you to stay firm in your faith and believe that God loves you and cares for you. He is able to make all things possible those who put trust in Him. I would like to thank all of you who had prayed for us, supported us in every possible way. May God bless you and your families in all your future endeavours. Please do continue to keep us in prayers.

What is a Spacewalk ? Ed White was the first American to perform a spacewalk. Image Credit: NASA View Larger Image Any time an astronaut gets out of a vehicle while in space, it is called a spacewalk. A spacewalk is also called an EVA. EVA stands for extravehicular activity. The first person to go on a spacewalk was Alexei Leonov. He was from Russia. The first spacewalk was on March 18, 1965. It was 10 minutes long. The first American to go on a spacewalk was Ed White. His spacewalk was on June 3, 1965, during the Gemini 4 mission. White's spacewalk lasted 23 minutes. Today, astronauts go on spacewalks outside the International Space Station. Spacewalks usually last between five and eight hours, depending on the job.
How Do Astronauts Go on Spacewalks? When astronauts go on spacewalks, they wear spacesuits to keep themselves safe. Inside spacesuits, astronauts have the oxygen they need to breathe. They have the water they need to drink. Astronauts put on their spacesuits several hours before a spacewalk. The suits are pressurized. This means that the suits are filled with oxygen. Astronauts prepare for spacewalks by practicing their tasks underwater in a giant pool called NASA's Neutral Buoyancy Laboratory. 74

When Astronauts are ready to get out of their spacecraft they leave the spacecraft through a special door called an airlock. The airlock has two doors. When astronauts are inside the spacecraft, the airlock is airtight so no air can get out. When astronauts get ready to go on a spacewalk, they go through the first door and lock it tight behind them. They can then open the second door without any air getting out of the spacecraft. After a spacewalk, astronauts go back inside through the airlock.
Why Do Astronauts Go on Spacewalks ? Astronauts go on spacewalks for many reasons. Spacewalks let astronauts work outside their spacecraft while still in space. Astronauts can do science experiments on a spacewalk. Experiments can be placed on the outside of a spacecraft. This lets scientists learn how being in space affects different things. Spacewalks also let astronauts test new equipment. They can repair satellites or spacecraft that are in space. By going on spacewalks, astronauts can fix things instead of bringing them back to Earth to fix.
How Do Astronauts Train for Spacewalks ? One way astronauts train for spacewalks is by going for a swim. Floating in space is a lot like floating in water. Astronauts practice spacewalks underwater in a large swimming pool. The pool is called the Neutral Buoyancy Laboratory, or NBL. 75

It is near NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas. The pool holds 6.2 million gallons of water. Astronauts train seven hours in the pool for every one hour they will spend on a spacewalk. Another way astronauts practice for a spacewalk is by using virtual reality. This is sort of like playing a video game. Astronauts wear a helmet with a video screen inside. They also wear special gloves. A video of what they will see during a spacewalk is shown on the screen inside the helmet. When the astronaut moves, the special gloves allow the movements to be shown with the video. The virtual reality simulation looks and feels just like a spacewalk.
How Do Astronauts Stay Safe During Spacewalks ? When on a spacewalk, astronauts use safety tethers to stay close to their spacecraft. Tethers are like ropes. One end is hooked to the spacewalker. The other end is connected to the vehicle. The safety tethers keep astronauts from floating away into space. Astronauts also use tethers to keep tools from floating away. They tether their tools to their spacesuits. Another way astronauts stay safe during spacewalks is by wearing a SAFER. SAFER stands for Simplified Aid for EVA Rescue. SAFER is worn like a backpack. It uses small jet thrusters to let an astronaut move around in space. If an astronaut were to become untethered and float away, SAFER would help him or her fly back to the spacecraft. Astronauts control SAFER with a small joystick, like on a video game.
