NEO-NOIR

by Andrea Loupis

Going to the cinema! The play between light and dark blurs a threshold between dreams and reality, expands the praxis of imagination and sets a traveling through a range of experience all in a confined space.

Our shoot explored this aspect of going to watch a film. The visceral experience of how a new light and new dark can create a new reality; a strangeness, a mystery and then the shock of a private experience in a public space. With the aid of theatricality of Sindiso Khumalo’s Afro-gothic prairie dresses, we chose to create two looks that could allude to the possibilities of the cinematic juxtaposition of light and dark.
