History

Happy Trails by Susan Campbell Aruba doesn’t horse around when it comes to showing pride in its equine heritage. The island has become a breeding ground for the Paso Fino, now one of the world’s best riding horses.

Aruban horses are smaller than most and are direct descendants of stock brought to the island by Spain’s conquistadors. Sea passage in those days was tough. Although cloth slings allowed the horses to sway with the ship’s rough-and-tumble passage, few ever completed the arduous journey alive. Oranjestad became a popular trading center for horses at the end of the 18th century. Brought to the island via Paarden Bay (Bay of Horses), the creatures did not have an easy time reaching land. There were no unloading facilities; they were simply thrown overboard. A local horse, placed at the water’s edge, would lure the horses to swim to shore. Los Caballos de Paso Fino meaning the horses with the fine step was a name given to this breed due to their incredibly smooth gait. No milkshake-machine trotting with these mounts; their backs

always remain completely parallel to the ground, giving the rider the most comfortable experience possible. Paso Finos were chosen by the conquistadors not only for this trait, but also for their strength and stamina, which allowed them to support heavy armor and endure long battles. In North America, the Paso Fino breed became diluted, but Arubans realized what an equestrian treasure they had, and kept the bloodlines pure. So, now you have it straight from the horse’s mouth: Aruba is the place for one of the best riding experiences in the world. Happy trails! K
