Island Report News, events, and happenings around Curaçao Project CLEAR Curaçao: Lionfish out!

This not-for-profit project has a CLEAR goal: control lionfish everywhere around Curaçao’s reefs! With help from www.REEF.org, Curaçao Fisheries, and Carmabi Research Station, they developed this program to build awareness through education to clear Curaçao’s reefs of lionfish, to support the local restaurant economy, and to create a viable and sustainable lionfish fishery by partnering with local fishermen. Their weekly program is simple: a 30 minute presentation, a boat dive to CLEAR lionfish, ending with a lionfish dinner! Jungle “Jack” Hanna, television’s famous wild life advocate and director of the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium, came to Curaçao in September 2013 to film a segment of his Emmynominated television show Into the Wild. He and his team swam with dolphins, interacted with ostriches and long-nosed bats, and traveled 1,000 feet below the sea in the Curasub with Curaçao Sea Aquarium owner Dutch Schrier. Hanna also had a meet-and-greet fundraising dinner with local fans to support Curaçao’s Parke Tropikal. www.jhitw.com Curaçao’s record-setting painting

At 1.24 miles in length, it’s still not the world’s longest painting, but it’s the longest in the Dutch Kingdom and the Caribbean. The project was spearheaded by Curaçao artist Ashley Mauricia and joined by other local creators and participants from Aruba, Miami, Canada, Venezuela, the Dominican Republic, and the Netherlands. It was completed on Flag Day, July 2, 2013. Portions painted by professionals were auctioned to support creation of a Curaçao Fine Arts Academy. www.curacao-art.com 12 Nights
