“At Your Service!” by Susan Campbell It takes a special kind of person to be a great concierge – a willingness to attempt the impossible, a passion for getting to know people, and an eagerness to share their destination to its fullest with others. Let’s meet a few of Aruba’s finest.

Jeffrey Connors Aruba Marriott Resort

Originally from Charlestown, Massachusetts, Jeffrey Connors has been a concierge at the Aruba Marriott Resort since 2012. “Though I had no prior experience, I was provided the necessary tools to master the job by the excellent management staff there,” he says. “My favorite part of the job is going above and beyond with service, like tracking down a specific kind of baby formula for a guest. It’s the little things that can really make a big difference in the enjoyment of someone’s stay.” What does Jeffrey think makes a great concierge? “Staying focused on the guest’s needs and being confident that the information you give them is always accurate.” On his time off, Jeffrey enjoys going to the beach with his wife and children. Sophia Palmer Aruba Marriott Resort

Jamaican-born and raised in Aruba, Sophia Palmer studied hospitality/tourism and hotel and restaurant management; right after graduation she landed her first concierge job. “I am learning that in this position you always have to expect the unexpected,” she says. “There’s always something different to deal with every day, and you must be creative in your approach to problem-solving and accommodating your guests’ needs. But there’s nothing I love doing more than making someone’s stay pictureperfect.” And her favorite part of the job so far? “Meeting people from all over the world and learning about their cultures. I love to travel during my time off.” E

Linda Garcia Renaissance Aruba Resort & Casino

Renaissance Hotels calls their concierges “navigators” and Linda Garcia as Concierge Manager, has been front and center in the industry for over 20 years. She says, “I’m proud that we can provide such great service in so many different languages. English, Spanish, Dutch, Papiamento... being a ‘navigator’ is so much more than a job; you must have an inherently helpful spirit, lots of patience, and really love people.” The navigator team at the Renaissance Resort also includes Nadia Arrindell and Berlinda Engelhardt. Linda says, “We are such a solid team, and what’s important to all of us is that our guests leave happy and satisfied, and look forward to their return to our resort, and our island! We always work together to give our guests the complete experience. And we never know what that might be! One of the most interesting parts of this job is that you never know how the day will start or how it will finish! Each day provides a different challenge and different rewards.” And as Linda looks down the road to eventual retirement she reflects, “After all these years I will certainly miss this job once I do retire, but with the excellent training that Renaissance gives their employees and the confidence I have in our team, I know that I will be leaving our guests in very good hands. I also know that the next

generation of navigators will be ready to take the helm with the same kind of passion and expertise.” These are just a few of the talented staff that you’ll encounter at the island’s best resorts. Don’t be shy; get to know your concierge so they can anticipate your needs and desires. They are always delighted to be at your service. K
