asa de Campo in the Dominican Republic is like a village unto itself. Beyond the main resort, the super selection of sports, the inviting beach life, and the comprehensive marina village, there are more interesting facets to this massive complex – in fact, this place is chock full of surprises! The first one is Alto de Chavon, a manmade recreation of a Mediterranean village on a hill overlooking their riverside golf course. It’s incredible. It looks ancient, but was only built some 40 years ago! The attention to detail is epic, and the little church and courtyard, sculptures, art galleries, shops and dining spots have such an authentic feel. It’s a very popular spot for weddings and photo shoots. But the crowning glory there is yet another huge surprise – an open-air Greek-style amphitheater that seats 5,000 people! The acoustics are excellent, and Frank Sinatra was the opening act in the venue in 1982! Since then, it has become the heart of cultural events in La Romana. have performed there. It’s very special. Also a surprise there is the comprehensive arts and design school. Students from the world over come to attend the first rate courses at the Altos de Chavón School of Design, which offers instruction in graphic design, fashion design, interior design, architecture, photography, and the visual arts. Visitors can also take pottery classes on site. And Casa de Campo has also recently begun including another type of traveler in its offerings. With the addition of the Ki Ra Holistic Centre, those seeking health and wellness retreats can do so in a gorgeous and intimate seaside venue. They really have covered all the bases. And the final surprise? You can play donkey polo! They have made the king’s sport of polo accessible to all by using donkeys, brooms and soccer balls! It’s great fun for the whole family.
