Ask the expert...

My sofa isn’t that old, but it hasn’t worn well at all and desperately

needs replacing. Can you give me any tips on choosing a new sofa to make sure I don’t make the same mistake again!

By the sounds of it, your sofa needs to be fairly robust, especially if you have children or pets, so consider buying a sofa with removable covers and a heavy-duty fabric. Upholstery fabrics should have a Martindale or “rub” test value which equates to the amount of times a fabric has been rubbed before showing signs of wear. We would recommend a rub test of at least 20,000 for general domestic use, but if you want something even more substantial, consider rub tests of 40,000+ which are for contract and severe domestic use. What is more difficult to check, though equally important, is how the sofa is constructed. Check that the sofa has a well-built, robust frame that will stand the test of time. Some high street sofas are constructed using less pricey materials such as conventional plywood and woodand-plastic composites. These are really only appropriate for infrequently used sofas and those that won't be kept more than two or three years. How the frame is constructed is as important as the materials from which it is made. High-quality frames are screwed and glued at all the joints, to doubly protect against anything coming apart. Of course, it’s not possible to strip the furniture to check the construction, but ask to see a brochure with details of how the frame is made and see if the company offers a guarantee. Above all, your sofa needs to be comfortable enough for you to want to keep it for a long time. Quality furniture makers should be able to tailor the dimensions, legs and cushion fillings of a sofa to suit your individual needs. Please get in touch with us if you would like any more advice about buying a sofa, details of our range of quality upholstered furniture, or to find out about our made-to-measure loose cover making service.

The past few months have been extremely busy planning and executing our very own “house move”! We had out-grown our premises at 14 Queen Street, so in October last year we moved up the road to our new home at 51 High Street. This was very exciting for us, and a real opportunity to change the layout and format of our showroom. Feedback from our customers showed that, although the range and variety of fabrics and wallpapers we offer meets their needs, they sometimes felt it wasn’t always easy to get “inspiration” and would like an easier browsing experience. With this in mind, we set out to create a showroom that was inspirational, and to make the experience of choosing perfect furnishings easier and quicker. Have a look at the photos and feature on the back of this publication for more details about our new showroom, but why not pop in and have a look for yourself! Don’t forget, we still offer fantastic value for money on all our products. Our Price Match Promise gives you peace of mind that you’re getting the best deal around, and why not sign up to be a “privilege member” giving you extra discounts on all fabrics with every curtain making order. Contact our team today on 01243 378831 or drop us an e-mail at showroom@suefoster.co.uk.
