As a non techno-geek, I am always surprised by the constant evolution of technology. Most of it has helped to make our lives better - communicating with relatives in far flung places by video link was only seen in sci-fi movies until a few years ago. Like most people I am now a slave to my smart phone, tablet and computer, although I am forced to go "off line" on holiday! One of the most impressive technological advances for me lately has been the further development of electronic blinds. Electric blinds are great for those hard to reach windows, and with no cords or chains are child safe and less likely to break. One of the drawbacks of electric blinds, however, has been the need to have an electrical source closeby. Hard wiring motorised blinds has often necessitated the use of a qualified electrician, which can be expensive and disruptive. So I was very pleased to learn of a brand new electric blind which uses a rechargeable lithium battery rather than mains electricity to work. This provides exactly the same convenience and safety without any expensive re-wiring. Operated by a wall switch or remote control, a single charge can run for around a year depending on usage, and can be programmed to run on a timer or triggered by light. So why not come along to our showroom at 51 High Street where you can see one in action, and we can happily talk through some of the more technical aspects. Then sit back and impress your visitors with your Bond-like gadgets - just don't forget the martini!

windows looking directly onto the pavement. I would like to put something at the window which would give me privacy from prying eyes without blocking too much light. Can you suggest anything?
A. Voile curtains have enjoyed something of a renaissance lately, and are an excellent solution for windows with passing foot traffic, or where you want to screen an uninspiring view. Voiles can suit a wide variety of properties and window styles, Image by Romo and are incredibly versatile. You could opt for a simple and stylish panel made from a sheer linen. They come in a range of opacities and can be plain, patterned or embroidered depending on your preference. You could also use voiles as softly draped, floor length curtains with your choice of curtain heading to add a touch of elegance. White voiles help to reflect light into the room - and why not add shutters or white wooden Venetian blinds for a touch of Caribbean chic. Sheer fabrics can also be made into simple roller or Roman blinds for a really practical and fuss-free window solution. These are great for providing shade in sunny south facing rooms, but tuck away neatly when not in use. Of course, keep in mind that no sheer fabric will be effective at night, when the lights inside your house will leave you visible through the fabric. Always combine them with additional window treatments to ensure complete privacy. Image by Rol-lite

The new Cubis range by Romo features a charming array of printed designs on their ever popular Linara brushed cotton-linen. With an indulgent, peach-skin finish the designs have a tactile quality and beautiful soft appearance. A versatile palette of subtle neutrals, pastel pink, forest green and sunflower yellow perfectly complement the existing Linara plain collection.
Representing a photographic silhouette of pressed grasses, this modern country wallpaper design by Sanderson is printed using rotary screen methods to add texture and opacity of colour.
