Can Lis - Mallorca, Spain, 1971. A Jørn Utzon precedent study. For overall orientation, Utzon gains inspiration from site. Then he uses his own Expansiva theory to create a basic modular unit, and to build up a variety of different building elements to create opportunities for people to move through. The manipulation and obstruction of free movement within the building, creates indiscernible movements which draw people around and get them to the focal points to look out.

Site Analysis The Discovery of Artificial & Natural Elements (that might generate Indiscernable Experience)

Analysis 1 Analysis 2

From the discovery of the patterns and elements of a larger context, to a closer analyzation of the contour threshold of the city and the domain, I can find out a variety of both natural and artificial elements that might indiscernibly causing people to move to certain space, which provides many possibilities for my architecture to be as an extension for those indiscernible movements. There are also elements around the site have great potential to be dissected, manipulated and experimented to generate possibilities in architectural experience, which can be further referred for developing my design.

Analysis 1 Continuity in Overall Context

Both city parklands and folded curves along the coastline helps create indiscernible movement for people to walk to certain space, which provide possibilities for extending those indiscernible experience to the site.

Artificial Staircase & Platforms

Zooming to a closer scale, I discover the overall contour from both city and the domain creates upward movement towards the site. The natural and artificial elements may be extracted and transformed to develop architectural elements for developing my design.

38

Through extracting, dissecting and manipulating both architectural and natural elements around the site, help provide inspiration for designing and arranging architectural elements for my design, with an integration of vision and body movement.

Conceptual Development Development 1 Development 2

Development 1 — Building Form Generation from Context This architectural project arises from the study of Jørn Utzon’s residence Can Lis and takes into consideration a deep understanding of how Utzon oriented his overall cluster of buildings, designed and arrange different architectural elements to help his architecture perfectly sit within the site, while integrating with human experience within the space.

Development 2 — Architectural Element Intervention The overall context of Sydney has lots of continuation of elements (greeneries, folded coastlines...) which let people indiscernibly walk to certain places, whereas the site is located at the threshold of city and the domain, creates great possibilities for continuing the indiscernible experience and experimenting the space with the “bare architectural elements”. Stairs, walls, platforms, columns and louvres, all together leads people into different functional spaces, while generating thresholds within a threshold.

Final Proposal Architectural Drawings, Renders and Model Photos

A new theatre and exhibition space is proposed at the "domain threshold" between city and the domain parkland in Sydney CBD, with an initial idea of opening up the space, exposing the architectural elements, blurring the boundaries and creating indiscernible experience. Going through both Utzon study and site analysis help me set up the overall arrangement of the space, compose the details and create all those "bare architecture" to link the site boundary and as ways to create indiscernible experience.

Integrating staircases and platforms/ Walls, Entrance Threshold: Section B 1:200 (Cafe, Bookstore, Toilet, Storage, Indoor Theatre, Large Patio)

The theatre is located at the centre of the cluster of buildings and platforms the Double-skin structure is a main technique used in designing the theatre building. The machine-running louvres (outer skin) can either open or close, combines with the semi-translucent Danpalon glass(inner-skin), gives a sense of dynamic for the theatre to adapt to different type of performance. Let the theatre stand out from the overall cluster of buildings with its unique characteristic.

For bathroom / storage, main theatre, reception / indoor exhibition and staff room are all using "threshold of entrance" to connect the indoor / outdoor domain.

103

104

The large patio is a spacious multifunctional area that can accommodate various public events. The domain parkland is being as a beautiful natural background of those events.

Possibility 1: Public presentation, speech, or small shows.

106

Possibility 2: Temporary ourdoor exhibition

107

Possibility 3: Extension of the resting area for cafe / bar

108

* Or just remain as its original function — a spacious viewing patio

109

Experiment in Walls / Sunny Outdoor Stage: Section C 1:200 (Outdoor Theatre, Outdoor Bar / Exhibition & Event Space, Secondary Viewing deck)

The fully opened roof platform is an experiment for the architectural element arrangement. The grid was primarily set as a schema prior to arranging the space. The walls are randomly shifting within a fixed boundary, creating gaps for enabling indiscernible experience. Some gaps between walls are enough for a person to pass through, some are quite narrow that can only allow a glimpse through the gap. The gradually raising wall height "cut off" the people and exhibited sculpture into fragments, attract people to walk through the whole space.

Internal framing / The indiscernible experience — Outdoor bar and exhibition area

113

The orientation of the outdoor theatre allow it to get abundant sunlight during the day. The fully open space providing opportunities for street performer or other organisation to book the place.

114

115

The negative space between volumes creates a great opportunity for circulation. The light bricks are paved, with a variety of Australian native shaded plants to create an beautiful oxygenated public space.
