Here's January's magazine cover now in the IAM Roadsmart colours. The picture was submitted by Mike Roberts, taken after some Observing on dirty B roads. Mike also did the digital editing. Chairman’s Chat Happy New Year, and a very warm welcome to the January edition of the SAM Observer. When I say warm I mean it sincerely and as far as last month went, quite literally. I hope you've been taking advantage of the semi warm weather we have been experiencing and managed to get out on your motorbike. I still can't quite believe that I've been riding in average temperatures of 10°C in the last few weeks of December. As it's the start of a new year my thoughts have turned to planning my ride outs, holidays, trips etc. for the coming year. It still looks as though Europe is still open for business which is very good news indeed. We may have a few more hoops to jump through at customs. Whatever you manage to achieve this year in terms of ride outs and trips away please bear in mind an article, accompanied by a photo or two for this fantastic award-winning publication which our editor Felix Oliver would be more than happy to receive. As it's the New Year membership fees are due. Details of how to renew are available on page 6 of this edition. I'm sure you'll agree that the fees are more than reasonable and that you can recoup the cost easily over the course of the year, thanks to the SAM discount scheme. Details of the participating dealers are available in the Members Only topic of the SAM forum via this link: http://www.suffolk-advanced-motorcyclists.com/disc Please take the time to complete a Gift Aid form, if you're in a position to, to allow the group to re-claim the taxable portion of your SAM membership. Membership renewal and the gift aid declaration forms are also available from the SAM website under 'JOIN US', 'Membership Renewal', directly via this link: http://www.suffolk-advanced-motocyclists.com/sam-membership-renewal.html

A gentle reminder for the New Year. The AGM is due to be held on Wednesday 19th February 2020. If you're considering a position on the committee and would like to know more about any available opportunities please feel free to get in touch with me or any other member of the committee and we'd be happy to discuss it further. Nominations for election to the committee at the AGM need to be presented to The SAM Observer January 2020

THE PROMOTIONS TEAM NEED YOUR HELP As you may or may not know the promo team are out and about pretty much all year round. The group has over 300 members with new members joining all the time which I think shows that what we do works. At two shows this year we were able to sign people up on the day using a direct link to the IAM, this resulted in us signing 20 new members in just two days, I’m not sure how many sign up after speaking to us at other shows because we don’t get that information but we know from speaking to new members that they do sign up after seeing us at one event or another. We have an excellent team of volunteers but we need more to cover all the events that we go to, the events start around March and finish in October, the events we cover are Police Safe Rider, Fire Service Biker Down, Demo Days at all local dealers, and various shows during the year including, Kesgrave Bell Bike Show in April, Hadleigh Show, Stonham Barns Bike Show in May, Wheels at Trinity Park in August (two day event) and of course The Copdock Bike Show in October plus other events during the year. We need help with manning the stand and getting the promotions gear to and from the venues, the gear consists of a gazeebo a couple of flags a couple of pullups a table and chairs, it sounds a lot but will easily fit into an average size car. So if you would like to help give me a call on 07986319163, or email glynhill93@gmail.com. It’s a fun day out with no training needed just telling people about SAM and your experiences is all you need to do, that usually does the trick.

SUFFOLK ADVANCED MOTORCYCLISTS Registered Charity no. 1067800 Trustee’s Annual report for year ending 31st December 2019 Name:

Suffolk Advanced Motorcyclists (SAM)

Registered No.:

1067800

Main Address:

16 Padstow Road, Kesgrave, Ipswich IP5 1LJ

Committee members: The Group Committee shall constitute The trustees of the Charity. Committee members are elected by the members of the group at an Annual General Meeting. At 31st December 2019 the officers of the committee were:R. Ockelton L. Steggles Bankers:

Chairman Secretary

M. Drury B. Duncan

Vice-Chairman Treasurer

Barclays, New Market Place, Beccles, NR34 9HD

Aims and Objectives The aim of the charity is to promote the improvement of riding standards and help new members pass the IAM advanced test. SAM promotes the club at SafeRider events, hosts publicity stands at shows such as the Hadleigh Show, Copdock Show, etc. It is affiliated with the Institute of Advanced Motorists and its members must also be members of the IAM. Main achievements during the year The club enjoyed a very successful year with membership now exceeding 300. Thanks for this must go to our Publicity Team, who were very active during 2019 attending various Manufacturers/Suppliers open evenings to promote SAM. Over £1,380 was expended in promotion at these events. SAM invested heavily in training throughout the year. Over £460 was spent in training for Associates and Observers. £650 was spent in the training of Ride Leaders and Ride Coordinators as well. To assist it tutoring, £1,429 was spent on equipment. This included Wi-Fi head-sets to supplement the older “wired” units. The “Young Riders” scheme continues to be well subscribed with 7 members currently on the program in 2019. This scheme will be continued in 2020. Despite zero revenue from Copdock, necessitating in the club having to cancel planned expenditure, 2019 was still a successful year for the club. SUFFOLK ADVANCED MOTORCYCLISTS Registered Charity no. 1067800 Examiners report on accounts for year ending 31st December 2019 I report on the accounts of the Trust for the year ending 31st December 2019 Respective responsibilities of trustees and examiner The charity’s trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts. The charity’s trustees consider that an audit is not required for this year (under section 144(2) of the Charities Act 2011) and that an independent examination is needed. It is my responsibility to: (i) Examine the accounts under section 145 of the 2011 Act (ii) To follow the procedures laid down in the general Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)b of the 2011 Act (iii) To state whether particular matters have come to my attention. Basis of examiner’s statement My examination was carried out in accordance with the general Directives given by the Charity Commission. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, seeking explanations from the trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit and consequently no opinion is given as to whether the accounts present a “true and fair view” and the report is limited to those matters set out in the statement below. Independent examiners qualified statement In connection with my examination, all matters arising were resolved satisfactorily. I therefore have no reasonable cause to believe that in any material respect, the requirements to keep accounting records in accordance with section 130 of the 2011Act; and to prepare accounts which accord with the accounting records and to comply with the accounting requirements of the 2011 Act, have not been met. SAM Theory Evenings As most of you know, on the Thursday evening, directly after Group Nights, SAM holds its monthly Theory Evening. Based on an ever revolving subject list of important rider skills these nights are an informal evening of facts and lively banter all aimed at improving your ride based on the information in the Advanced Rider Course Logbook. Each session covers one of the four main topic areas; Overtaking Cornering

Planning & Positioning Gears & Acceleration

Mainly aimed at Associates going through the course, these evenings are also a good way for full members to brush up on their theory and add their experiences and questions to the session. The great benefit of attending these sessions in the classroom means it saves time on the road, covering theory and has the added advantage of an opportunity to discuss any issues you may have generally on your Advanced Rider Course.

Associate only ride out 7th December 2019 Start at Beacon Hill services 09:30 – Destination Red Poll Tearoom at Darsham As a new associate member with only one observed ride under my belt, I am keen to get the most from my membership and meet new people and broaden my horizons. So the decision was made, I would treat my very clean Triumph Street Triple to a winters ride, the email was sent with a quick reply from Sarah confirming that I was on the list, I duly watched the weather all week and was pleased to see the forecast was bright and not raining, but a little cold. It was an early start on Saturday, usually I’d be doing the local parkrun. But now the open road beckoned, there were 3 observers and 3 associates, Observers:Vini Evans – Ride Leader Mike Roberts Glyn Hill Associates: Tony Coulson James Harper Paul Osborne After an initial brief from Vini covering ‘Elf and Safety and some details on social riding etiquette – we soon set off on the A140, then the A1120, destination breakfast at the very pleasant Red Poll Tearooms. I followed Vini and was pleased to feel as if my riding was flowing nicely with him ahead of me despite some wet and unclean road conditions, having a more experienced rider ahead certainly made me feel more confident, before long we arrived at our destination where we suitably refuelled on a small fry up and hot drinks, with an informal catch up on our journey so far, Vini then spoke more about marking junctions on social ride outs, after this break we set off each following an observer on a route that would include more junctions and twisty country roads, I let the side down a little by omitting to mark a junction, but after a little ballet we were all soon back in position where our riding flowed nicely The SAM Observer January 2020

right back through to Beacon Hill, where we had a further coffee and de-brief from our observers. I would certainly recommend attending this type of ride as it opens up more knowledge and opportunity within SAM and can only benefit our riding skills. Upon return home I treated my bike to a chain clean and mini valet, I don’t think it had even been so dirty. Pictures on Page 35 Many Thanks

So if you have a cracking shot that has one or more motorcycles in it, is all your own work, and you think it would look good on the cover, I’d be very pleased to see it. Over on the SAM Forum I am collating a list of the recommended cafés, greasy spoons, tea shops, etc. with maps and pictures so we can all benefit from the collective knowledge of SAM. http://www.suffolk-advanced-motorcyclists.com/tea If you have favourite stopping place in Suffolk, Norfolk, Essex or Cambridgeshire then why not pop over to the SAM Forum and let other members know of your recommendations, or drop me an email with enough details so that I can find the place on Google Maps / Streetview. Editorial A very happy New Year to you all, I hope you all had a relaxing time over Christmas with family and friends. Mine was interesting, family round over Christmas then the hedge has been getting out of control so spent 3 days cutting that back, having a bonfire to get rid of all the brambles and ivy which has got out of hand. I think one of the best feeling is sitting round a fire watching it burn, dark with Orions belt and the big bear ( Ursa Minor) twinkling overhead with no lights on just magical. Meanwhile my poor bike is sitting in the garden hoping for good weather. She had a little ride out to club night with Les Steggles’s brilliant quiz. With the winners getting a bottle of wine each. I will raise a glass to the club when we enjoy our glass or two  So now Spring is round the corner, plans are being drawn up for holidays, so think of the rest of the club who can re-live your trip by reading all about it in our magazine. After all “Sharing is caring” 

Safe Riding

Closing date for copy Monday after club night If you’d like to help save the Group on the printing and postage costs of your monthly ‘hard copy’ of the ‘SAM Observer’ by opting to receive an email notification instead, then please give me your email details on Group Night or send me an email. I hope that you have been enjoying the reports that members who go on ride outs have written, and as you can see, it doesn’t have to be a wordy passage, so feel free to scribble a few words down, a few pictures and next month you will have another great magazine to read Don’t forget to take your cameras and a notebook to record your trip then you can write a nice article about it for your favourite magazine. I have a word template if anyone would like it, email me and I’ll send you a copy which has all the formatting re-set on it. Please remember that we use Times New Roman as the main font for the magazine at a size 16 so that when the printer converts the A4 pages down to A5 the font looks like a 12. I like pictures to be separate to your articles because I can make them bigger or small to fill the page
