Chairman's Chat A very warm welcome to the June edition of the SAM Observer. It was an honour to have been part of Dave Arbon's courtage and the celebration of his life on the 16th May. The numbers that attended being an indication of the high regard he is held in. Dave's wife, Gill and son, Chris would like any donations to go to the SERV Blood Bikes and the East Anglian Air Ambulance charities. Here are the links to the SERV Suffolk & Cambridgeshire branch and the East Anglian Air ambulance sites where there are various options to donate.

Many thanks to Paul Newman for his words about his friendship and fond memories of Dave at May's Group Night. This years Chief's Challenge 2017 'Icons and Eateries', sponsored by MotoTechniks is underway. It's not too late though and is free to enter. The full details of the challenge, what you'll receive for completing it, the prize draw details and how to register can be found in May's edition. http://www.mototechniks.com/ I've started the challenge, this being my best photo so far taken at one of the iconic locations. As you can see I'm becoming quite the selfie expert!
All the best to the 'Old Boys on Bikes'; Rob Day, John Sillett and Derek Barker for there riding challenge, visiting the four compass points of the UK in 4 days, raising funds for and awareness of Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia. Details of their challenge and why they're completing it can be found on page 23. Many thanks to Geoff Cadman for his insightful and fascinating talk at last months group night about the East Anglian Air Ambulance helicopters, operations and the team. Geoff collected ÂŁ60 of donations from individual member donations on the night in memory of Dave Arbon. This month's guest speaker is Simon Weir the editor of RiDE magazine who is going to give us a talk on tour planning. http://www.ride.co.uk/ Cheers

SAM Theory Evenings As most of you know, on the Thursday evening, directly after Group Nights, SAM holds its monthly Theory Evening. Based on an ever revolving subject list of important rider skills these nights are an informal evening of facts and lively banter all aimed at improving your ride based on the information in the Advanced Rider Course Logbook. Each session covers one of the four main topic areas; Overtaking Cornering
Planning & Positioning Gears & Acceleration
Mainly aimed at Associates going through the course, these evenings are also a good way for full members to brush up on their theory and add their experiences and questions to the session. The great benefit of attending these sessions in the classroom means it saves time on the road, covering theory and has the added advantage of an opportunity to discuss any issues you may have generally on your Advanced Rider Course.

Suffolk Advanced Motorcyclists Chiefs’ Challenge 2017 has begun, register now! ‘ICON’S AND EATERIES’ The Chief’s Challenge has set off with a roaring start with well over 20 participants registering within the first two days of the launch. If you are thinking about doing it, sign up now. As mentioned in last month’s magazine the point of the Chief’s Challenge is for you as SAM members to go out and ride your bikes over summer instead of letting them gather dust or just meandering with nowhere particular to go, riding the same old roads. It is FREE to enter. You can do this challenge on your own, with someone else or in groups. You can ride or even be a pillion (so you don’t even need to own a bike, you just need to get cosy with someone!). On successful completion you will qualify for a special commissioned celebratory mug and your name will be put into a prize draw with a chance to win £200 worth of gift vouchers or a second prize of £50 to spend in Mototechniks, Stowmarket who have generously sponsored this challenge (well at least I did remind Simon and Luke they have ☺ ). A third prize donated by me which I might even alter this year as I’ve cashed in my shares with ‘Colgate’ so have no vested interest in giving out sweets! The SAM Observer June 2017

You will need to get a picture of you with the locations in the background. All locations are within the borders of our fine county so you don’t even need to dig out you ‘Suffolk Passport’ to take part this year. It needs to be completed by 1st September 2017 and for your name to be put into the prize draw you need to attend September club night in person. If you are interested in taking part please contact Sara on karlsarahale@btinternet.com where your name will be registered and the locations and rules will be passed on to you. Have fun and good luck with the challenge.

Classic Motorbike Show I am a member of SAM and have been for many years now but also my wife and I run the Norfolk Branch of the Honda Owners Club (GB). This year we are having our Classic Motorbike Show at David Silver's Museum on Sunday June 25th from 10:00 till 15:00, the flyer is attached. We would be very happy for SAM members to come along and wanted to let people know of the event. There will be food and music and entry to the Classic Show as per the flyer. It should be a brilliant day and I know some SAM member have saved some lovely classic bikes which would be lovely to see đ&#x;˜Š We would love to see some members there and the museum is stunning. Pink is the new Yellow On the Biker down course last September, it was mentioned that current ‘wisdom’ is that pink hi-vis is the preferred option for conspicuousness. I’ve been surfing and looking at the research into the efficacy of high vis in reducing accidents or SMIDSY’s. I’m one of those that feels wearing hi vis all the time is of benefit to my conspicuity and therefore makes me safer, this may come from my cycling proficiency days as well, got a silver in that!! In the research I have found online it seems that there are mixed and contradictory conclusions about wearing hi vis. One thing that became clear was that the clothing worn by the motorcyclist did impact on their conspicuity so long as the environmental factors were taken into account. Different seasons result in the background the rider sits in changing in colour and contrast. Different road contours also result in different backgrounds to the rider such as cresting the brow of a hill and thus presenting the oncoming traffic to a view of the sky. Over the past year I have been trying out different colours of hi vis vest picking the colour dependant on the weather and conditions. I felt this actually made a difference to how other road users reacted to me, one noticeable difference was when wearing pink! In pink driving the same road at the same time, albeit on a different day I found that more drivers pulled out in front of me or blocked me on filtering and generally treating me in an aggressive manner. Why was this? I have my own thoughts in that pink is associated with a particular gender and might that cause other drivers to act more aggressive? High vis is only one tool, passing IAM being the biggest!, in our kit to keep safe and by varying what we wear, I have found, can enhance that. Of course other factors; Headlights Helmet colour Using the horn
Day time running lights Size/colour of motorcycle
being some that also have an effect on conspicuity but I feel a bit of colour doesn’t hurt and yes black is also a colour!

Noose o’ Norfolk Back by popular demand! As an extra treat, in July as well as the usual Sunday breakfast run, SAM is organising an extended all day ride with two, yes two, refreshments stops! In previous years, we have beaten the bounds of Suffolk. This year we intend to trace the border of Norfolk. Vini Evans has devised a great route that will take us across fens, along coast roads via seaside towns and through various market towns. So get your passports ready, have your vaccinations and get ready to boldly go where no man (or sane woman) has gone before. The ride is open to both SAM members and guests, so please let your friends know and invite them along. The ride forms part of SAM’s support for our annual charity, which this year is Suffolk Accident Rescue Service (SARS). There will be a representative of the charity there at the start to outline their service and to describe the beneficiaries of their work. A donation of £5 from riders will be requested after the briefing before we set off. Run Leader and Ride Coordinator Training Saturday 8th July 2017 As you may be aware we have carried out some Run Leader and Ride Coordinator Training over the past few years for people who help out on SAM social rides. SAM's aim is to continue providing them with yearly training as well as inviting new full members to join the team. There is a number of reasons for this, the obvious is to make sure we all get there and no one gets lost, but in addition there are Social Ride obligations placed on us by the IAM which I am sure most people outside the committee are not aware off. There are two key Roles needed to make the social ride a success:The Ride Coordinator Key Tasks /responsibilities:To do the pre run briefing. To make sure people are divided into groups of up to 6 with a Run Leader leading the group. To make sure there is a group for Associate members that is supported by a group Observer. To call the CafĂŠ before the event to check its still open and on the day to let them know the numbers. The Run Leaders Key Tasks/ Responsibilities:To lead their specific group to the destination safely. To be a good IAM test standard rider, (Full Member) who is able to keep a group of riders together on a run. If you are interested in taking part the training session for both the above posts at Fynn Valley Golf Club on Saturday 8th July 2017 at 9am. The session will consist of morning in the classroom followed by some on the road practical in the afternoon. Current Ride Coordinators and Run Leaders must attend this session to retain their position. Please email Sara Hale (SAM karlsarahale@btinternet.com The SAM Observer June 2017

Old Boys Ride Again In recent years Myself, Johnny Sillett and Derek Barker have undergone some long distance rides to raise awareness and funds for various charities that have usually been of significant importance to us and of course worthy of our suffering backsides. Well this year we are undertaking another of these epic and sometimes bucket list rides to raise some funds for a much more personal reason to me. You may think that this is a bit of a jolly for us and to a point you may be right. Some people would run a marathon to raise funds, we don’t, some would cycle a marathon, we don’t, some would jump out of an aeroplane, we definitely don’t. What we do is ride motorcycles, so doing something epic on a motorcycle is the only way we can grab your attention for minute or two. Back in November 2016 my youngest Grandson Ru was diagnosed with A.L.L. Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia which is a blood cancer and a life threatening disease. 20 to 25 years ago this would have meant certain death within weeks. Today after years of research and a 3 to 4 year quite nasty treatment programme of chemo therapy and steroid treatment, his chances of survival are around 90/95%. He has already lost his hair. The steroids have caused a 25% weight gain with muscle pain and the temporary inability to walk. He has undergone more bouts of anaesthesia than most will experience in a lifetime to facilitate monthly lumber punctures. BUT he is alive and responding to treatment and for that we are so happy. As you could imagine not being able to directly help with his treatment, I personally and with the support of John and Derek would love to be able to do something to help the people that can, and that, apart from the parental support that he is getting is the child cancer wards at Addenbrookes where most of the serious treatment is undertaken. These are the critical child cancer wards C2 and The SAM Observer June 2017

Page 23
the PDU (Peadreatic Day Unit). The PDU is where the child patients spend a great deal of their time being monitored following treatment. We now know that the PDU is to be refurbished and we are going to try and raise some funds for that specifically. We are opening a JustGiving page so that people can make donations. https://www.justgiving.com/4pointsin4days. These are fed into the Addenbrookes charitable trust and with the help of an admin contact our specific funds will be directed to the PDU refurbishment project. What are we up to, well we are going to ride to the 4 most extreme geographical road destinations of mainland Britain in 4 days. This means that on the 19th June in the early hours we will set off for Lowestoft in the East and then ride to the Lizard Point in Cornwall which is approx 500mls. The next day we set off on our journey to Ardnamurchan in Scotland the furthest point West after another overnight in the Dales. After Ardnamurchan we will set off for Dunnett Head in the North which is slightly further north than the famous John o Groats. The whole journey to that point will be approx 1500 mls. Thereafter we will enjoy a couple of days bumbling about in the highlands. If you can support us we would be very grateful.

How did you get into biking? I really enjoy discussing with biker mates how, why, when and on what we started riding. Thought I'd share my experiences (And who knows, maybe others can share too? Must be loads of adventures among SAM members) For me it started around 15 years ago when I was commuting overseas (Mon to Fri) and getting stung on tax for a company car I only drove to/from the airport. I had the option of a cash option so decided to save money and go for a small scooters. So my decision was very much about saving money and I found and I (rather presumptuously) ordered a new 100cc Peugeot Trekker scooter and had it delivered to the CBT centre, so I could ride it home. This was high risk (as had I failed I'd have been stuck) but luckily my initial demolishing of the cones on the figures of 8 didn't seem to overly bother the assessor and after a couple of hours on the road I was deemed safe enough to ride (on L plates) with CBT certificate proudly folded up in my pocket. Fair to say things deteriorated fairly quickly as my first big bend saw me panic break, hit a curb and double somersault onto the grass verge. Dazed, and shaken up, I eventually continued, far far slower, to the next roundabout (on the A5 - 60 mph section) only this time I had classic 'target fixation' as I drove straight into a wall. Eventually I got home and locked the scooter away figuring I'd wait a while before venturing out again. Luckily (for me & other road users) a few months later I ended up with a full time job overseas and the scooter was left/unridden in the garage thereafter. Sadly the Scoot got stolen a while later (SORN and uninsured) so my initial attempts at 2 wheeled riding proved more than a little expensive. £2,500 (Scoot, insurance, helmet, gloves) and a grand total of 56Km ridden. I recon that's close to £70 a mile, which must be Ferrari type expensive. My saving money commuting hadn't worked out, but on my return to the UK 7 years later, I got a letter from Wiltshire police telling me they had recovered my bike and to pay £200 plus £12 a day for it, or it would be sold to recover their costs. That it was reported stolen (with crime number) didn't matter. Anyhow I went with mate, paid the cash, fixed it up, and the rest is history. And importantly, once I'd passed my DAS, I decided some further training wouldn't be a bad idea ☺

Editorial Well what is new. Some great excitement in the Editors house… just about passed 500 miles this year… Good job I have signed up for the Chiefs Challenge and what is more Mrs Editor seems to be happy with it. I see that some SAM members have almost finished. ☺ On the bright side my garage is going well and the bike should be able to live in the warm, As I write this, its shivering under a cover in the rain.. This week we saw the Suffolk show come and go with record numbers again attending. I was offered a corner in the FSB stand ( Federation of Small Business ) so was on duty with my oak frames. Managed to skive off for a quick waddle round. I think our Chairman is having a few days brake so we’ll be in for a treat with his article After the tragic events of last month, and the amount of love that was shown, I have been thinking that if anyone in the club needs someone to talk about any issue that’s worrying them, please pick up the phone. After all its better to talk about things rather than bottling everything up. Safe Riding

Closing date for copy Friday after club night If you’d like to help save the Group on the printing and postage costs of your monthly ‘hard copy’ of the ‘SAM Observer’ by opting to receive an email notification instead, then please give me your email details on Group Night or send me an email. I hope that you have been enjoying the reports that members who go on ride outs have written, and as you can see, it doesn’t have to be a wordy passage, so feel free to scribble a few words down, a few pictures and next month you will have another great magazine to read Don’t forget to take your cameras and a notebook to record your trip then you can write a nice article about it for your favourite magazine. I have a word template if anyone would like it, email me and I’ll send you a copy which has all the formatting re-set on it. Please remember that we use Times New Roman as the main font for the magazine at a size 16 so that when the printer converts the A4 pages down to A5 the font looks like a 12. I like pictures to be separate to your articles because I can make them bigger or small to fill the page

We had a great day at Mototechniks, we had BSB champion Josh Brookes on the stand, and a lot of interest from the general public. I also won the raffle for a weekend pass to Snetterton BSB at the end of June, so a good weekend all round.
