Chairman’s Chat Hello all and welcome to the June edition of the SAM Observer magazine. As I sit down to write this on Spring Bank Holiday Monday, we have just had visitors to stay over the weekend and been down the pub for a few beers and a good meal for the first time this year. And at this moment the sun is shining and I can hear the familiar burble, buzz and whine of the various motorbikes in the distance, and all seems right with the world. That is until I turn on the telly to find that pandemic panic has reared its ugly head again. Luckily it’s not in my remit to comment on how worried or not we should be, but at a practical level for our club I’m just hoping our AGM and club night will be able to go ahead as planned on July 21st . Now, you may remember that last month I gave a tip on how not to bump start your bike if you have a flat battery. Well this month I’ve got another good tip – in fact two good tips, based on other past and recent mistakes. Tip one: If you haven’t already got a puncture repair kit and a small air compressor, then GET BOTH. Tip two: If you already have the afore mentioned items, then TAKE THEM WITH YOU when you go out on your bike. I was on an evening chip run with some SAM members a few weeks ago when, on my return about 15 miles from home, I felt my bike wasn’t handling quite right. It had just started raining and the road was a bit greasy so I initially put it down to that. However the bike became less and less stable and the steering was getting heavy so I found a convenient pull-in and stopped to check, and yes as sure as eggs are eggs I had a punctured tyre. That’s when I remembered that my emergency kit was locked under the seat of my other bike in the garage – stupid boy! Luckily I was able to phone my wife and direct her to another battery compressor in my car and then direct her to where I was. I just managed to get home with two ‘pump up’ stops but it was slow going. The SAM Observer June 2021

Page 5
The next day I repaired the puncture using a Dynaplug kit I bought from The Adventure Bike Shop (one of our magazine advertisers) about three years previously after a similar episode when I had to wait half the night for an RAC recovery truck. It was a simple repair and it worked a treat. I won’t get into the ‘rights and wrongs’ of puncture repairs in general or of riding any great distance on a plugged tyre, but I did note that the Technical Union for the Automobile, Motorcycle and Cycle Industries has certified the Dynaplug repair system for permanent repairs for punctures up to 16d nail size in the tread zone! – So, I guess you pays your money and you makes your choice! Well, I’m hoping I don’t have any more mistake based tips for you next month, so until then, Cheers! and happy and safe riding Cheers
Martin

Copdock Classic Motorcycle Club Fun Run 27th June 2021 Just heard from Kevin Bolt that there is a fun run for CCMC on Sunday 27th June 2021. It is still being planned but they have requested our help with marshals as usual. No actual details yet but I guess we will meet at say 9.30am at The Copdock Great Western Hotel. I think we will need 20 volunteers. There is no route yet. No destination. I will act as coordinator for the event but need some help.

SAM Theory Evenings Watch out for updates as the club is holding Zoom meetings, further details as they become available As most of you know, on the 3rd Thursday evening every month, SAM holds its monthly Theory Evening. Based on an ever revolving subject list of important rider skills these nights are an informal evening of facts and lively banter all aimed at improving your ride based on the information in the Advanced Rider Course Logbook. Each session covers one of the four main topic areas; Overtaking Cornering
Planning & Positioning Gears & Acceleration
Mainly aimed at Associates going through the course, these evenings are also a good way for full members to brush up on their theory and add their experiences and questions to the session. The great benefit of attending these sessions in the classroom means it saves time on the road, covering theory and has the added advantage of an opportunity to discuss any issues you may have generally on your Advanced Rider Course.

SUFFOLK ADVANCED MOTORCYCLISTS Registered Charity no. 1067800 Trustee’s Annual report for year ending 31st December 2020 Name:
Suffolk Advanced Motorcyclists (SAM)
Registered No.:
1067800
Main Address:
Nutwood Lodge, Woolpit, IP30 9RP
Committee members: The Group Committee shall constitute The Trustees of the Charity. Committee members are elected by the members of the group at an Annual General Meeting. At 31st December 2020 the officers of the committee were:M. Drury E. Aldridge
Chairman Secretary
D. Harris B. Duncan
Vice-Chairman Treasurer
Bankers: Barclays, New Market Place, Beccles, NR34 9HD Aims and Objectives The aim of the charity is to promote the improvement of riding standards and help new members pass the IAM advanced test. SAM promotes the club at SafeRider events and hosts publicity stands at local shows, etc. It is affiliated with the Institute of Advanced Motorists and its members must also be members of the IAM. Main achievements during the year Our training and social activities were seriously curtailed due to the Covid19 restrictions, however we still managed to get 33 Associates through their test including 5 “First’s” and 3 “Young Riders”. We have 3 “Young Riders currently in the scheme and we will continue this initiative for 2021. As well as training for Associates and Observers which cost £430, we also purchased additional “Blue-Tooth” receivers for £284 to update our equipment. Our Publicity Team were unable to attend any shows in 2020, however we still invested £1,640 in equipment, etc., for use at future events. Due to our enforced inactivity, our expenditure was greatly reduced, as was our income. We received no revenue from Copdock or Group Nights. Thankfully, courtesy of the money we receive through Gift Aid, SAM still finished 2020 with a positive balance in the accounts. The SAM Observer June 2021

SUFFOLK ADVANCED MOTORCYCLISTS Registered Charity no. 1067800 Examiners report on accounts for year ending 31st December 2020 I report on the accounts of the Trust for the year ending 31st December 2020 Respective responsibilities of trustees and examiner The charity’s trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts. The charity’s trustees consider that an audit is not required for this year (under section 144(2) of the Charities Act 2011) and that an independent examination is needed. It is my responsibility to: (i) Examine the accounts under section 145 of the 2011 Act (ii) To follow the procedures laid down in the general Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)b of the 2011 Act (iii) To state whether particular matters have come to my attention. Basis of examiner’s statement My examination was carried out in accordance with the general Directives given by the Charity Commission. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, seeking explanations from the trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit and consequently no opinion is given as to whether the accounts present a “true and fair view” and the report is limited to those matters set out in the statement below. Independent examiners qualified statement In connection with my examination, all matters arising were resolved satisfactorily. I therefore have no reasonable cause to believe that in any material respect, the requirements to keep accounting records in accordance with section 130 of the 2011Act; and to prepare accounts which accord with the accounting records and to comply with the accounting requirements of the 2011 Act, have not been met. Editorial Here we are on the brink of being let out….And… just round the corner is Miss Delta Covid. Trouble is ?? What would you do if you were PM? Lock down or say get on with it …whatever he does it’s not going to suit everybody. Personally I’ve been out and about every day with work and looking after parents, now I’m double jabbed and glowing slightly, I’m now invincible. As for the bike… erm work has got in the way, its sitting in the garage, next doors cat has decided that it’s a lovely place to spend the night and left lots of footprints all over it. Well that’s me, working at the boatyard in Southwold, which is great fun, only I have to leave crack of sparrows and late at night. A few more write up and trips would be nice as the magazine is a bit thin again, a few years ago we, the club, won best newsletter in IAM’s, I’m throwing the gantlet down to see if we can’t get that title back again. So get scribbling, or typing now. Safe Riding

Closing date for copy Monday after club night If you’d like to help save the Group on the printing and postage costs of your monthly ‘hard copy’ of the ‘SAM Observer’ by opting to receive an email notification instead, then please give me your email details on Group Night or send me an email. I hope that you have been enjoying the reports that members who go on ride outs have written, and as you can see, it doesn’t have to be a wordy passage, so feel free to scribble a few words down, a few pictures and next month you will have another great magazine to read Don’t forget to take your cameras and a notebook to record your trip then you can write a nice article about it for your favourite magazine. I have a word template if anyone would like it, email me and I’ll send you a copy which has all the formatting re-set on it. Please remember that we use Times New Roman as the main font for the magazine at a size 16 so that when the printer converts the A4 pages down to A5 the font looks like a 12. I like pictures to be separate to your articles because I can make them bigger or small to fill the page
