SAM Theory Evenings As most of you know, on the 4th Wednesday evening every month, SAM holds its monthly Theory Evening. Based on an ever revolving subject list of important rider skills these nights are an informal evening of facts and lively banter all aimed at improving your ride based on the information in the Advanced Rider Course Logbook. Each session covers one of the four main topic areas; Overtaking Cornering

Planning & Positioning Gears & Acceleration

Mainly aimed at Associates going through the course, these evenings are also a good way for full members to brush up on their theory and add their experiences and questions to the session. The great benefit of attending these sessions in the classroom means it saves time on the road, covering theory and has the added advantage of an opportunity to discuss any issues you may have generally on your Advanced Rider Course. Next theory night meeting will be May 20th 2022

Copdock Classic Motorcycle Club Charity Fun Runs 2022 As you know CCMC operates as a motorcycle charity to raise money for various clubs and other good causes predominantly in East Anglia. In the past SAM has received monies from CCMC to assist with our young riders training. To reciprocate this SAM supports the Fun Runs and the Copdock Show by providing marshals for the fun runs and at the motorcycle parking area for the show. CCMC are planning their rides for 2022 and given us early warning of their proposed dates for the Fun Run. (The Copdock Motorcycle Show is Sunday 4th September so that needs to be in your diary). There are 3 rides: 22nd May, 12th June, 24th July,

The Norfolk and Suffolk Museum at Flixton, Bungay Shotley Rose Leiston Football Club

The rides will start from Copdock and we normally meet at around 9.30 leaving around 10am riding the route dropping off marshals at agreed junction locations along the route. The marshals remain in place to guide the following Fun Run groups with an arrow (SAM provides) to direct them. The Fun Run will last about an hour to 1.5 hrs leaving Copdock at 11.00. (These times are general and CCMC will confirm times later). Once the Fun Run has passed you are welcome to continue the route and join in the ‘entertainment’ at the venue. Details will be confirmed and you will be fully briefed before we leave Copdock. If you are able to volunteer for any of the above dates please let Eric Aldridge know. We need around 20+ volunteers/marshals for each event. Email: ealdridge49@gmail.com Mobile:07984022646

The Meanderings of a Secretary In his desperation to find articles for the SAM magazine our intrepid Editor asked me to revive the tradition of The Secretary writing some sophisticated facts. No chance of ‘sophisticated’ but plenty of rambling instead. So here is this months. (Felix be careful what you wish for!!) For those members who haven’t quickly turned the page a bit of my background. I am a retired civil engineer responsible for the A14 including the infamous Copdock interchange, Chelmsford Bypass, Gorleston/Great Yarmouth (A12) etc and 4 contracts at Stansted Airport and many more over 47 years but those you will be familiar with. I also worked in Zambia for a couple of years too. People think that being retired means you have plenty of time on your hands. VERY WRONG but I’ll leave any further thoughts on that. I had reason to move a few things around in my loft recently, found some old photos and here is the reference to motorbikes you have all been waiting for. But firstly a bit of personal history. A little while back, in the 1950’s, my parents bought a motorbike and sidecar. We were very fortunate to have transport as only

a few families could afford cars where I lived in Surrey. My father had The SAM Observer May 2022

Page 9

previously owned a push bike on which he fitted what he called a ‘Power Pack engine’. He may even have passed his motorbike test on it. I saw something like it recently at Browns Café, Mundford. The motorbike was a BSA. After that I’m guessing at 650cc possibly a Gold Star. No doubt the experts among you will correct me and quote the engine number. The sidecar was a Swallow with two very cramped seats and roll back roof. Suddenly, I had friends! We often had four kids traveling to the coast standing in the sidecar with our heads poking out the roof. Local to us were notorious hills. One was Pebble Hill on B2032 (a ¼ or 5 slope) not far from Box Hill that we used to crawl up the incline with my father whipping the bike as encouragement. It’s now part of a cycle race after using the route for the 2012 Olympics. Obviously, no M25 yet (the nearby M25/M23 junction is on my CV too.) My father acquired a homemade trailer to hitch on the back so we became

campers. In those days ‘lightweight’ hadn’t been invented. We had the heaviest beds you can imagine -ex army solid timber frame looking like a stretcher. Four The SAM Observer May 2022

Page 10

of them!!. The tents were upgraded after a few weekend trials so they were equally heavy-duty but waterproof and so the list of equipment went on and shoe-horned into the trailer. The trailer wheels were from a spitfire (yes the aircraft not the car). After a few years hard towing work it was retired and stored in our garden. One year we were planning a camping trip to Wales. At the last minute we needed to use the trailer. Early one Saturday morning with the trailer fully loaded we set off. My brother was on the pillion and mother in front of me in the sidecar (don’t ask me how she managed that). We reached Watford somewhere near the Busy Bee Cafe at the bottom of the M1 (as it was). My father was getting agitated by hooting drivers and people waving at him as they passed. It was then I noticed the smoke and I attracted his attention and we quickly stopped. By the time I had exited the sidecar the tyres were only smouldering with the trailer resting on the wheels. I’ll leave the rest of that holiday tale but I’ll just say the excitement didn’t end there but the trailer did.

Throwback Month? The photo in last month’s magazine, I'm sure I took in about 2008 and passed it to the owners Derek Barker and John Sillett both identical Honda Blackbirds, it was taken at the Pines in Ingleton, only thing I might have got wrong is the year, not sure if this is a competition?

Here's another photo you could use and there's only one person out there who will know all the details as he took the photo, ??, a lot of people will recognise the bike. Details are Beverley's bike taken in September 2006 on our trip to ??, be interesting if anyone can recognise the background which is the ??. Regards

Where are we going and how are we getting there? SAM Social Rides in June Sunday 5th sees us venturing up to Lincolnshire once more. We are starting these longer Brunch Runs from Bury as it saves those living in the mid-west (makes them sound as though they’re real cowboys) from having to travel across the county and then double back. Starting off through the forestry as far as Methwold, then it’s Fen roads via Downham, Wisbech to Long Sutton. We join the A17 for a stretch to Swineshead Bridge. This section I feel is much maligned by a lot of riders, with comments coming back about the number of traffic islands and the average speed cameras hampering decent progress. Others, like myself, quite enjoy the challenge of taking note of SatNav speed along with carefully anticipated overtakes in order to legally cover this piece of road with some satisfaction. Remember though – Ride your own Ride. If you don’t feel in your comfort zone then hold back, you won’t get left behind, the others – or just one in your group will happily wait along the road at the next turnoff. Then it’s off through the Kymes and past Coningsby into Horncastle. There is a fuel stop scheduled as we enter the town, as some smaller tank sizes need a top-up after 100 miles. It’s then left at the lights and into the Garden Centre on the left as we leave the town. Saturday the 18th and we’re off to see the proud horses of the county at the Suffolk Punch Trust. Don’t panic! It’s not just horses. They do have a very nice cafeteria, so you can still get your slice of cake. Beware of any doughnuts that you may see lying around though! They could be made with love by the horses. From Beacon Hill we set off to Eye then across through Stradbroke and down to Denington and Yoxford. A short stretch down the A12 to Saxmundham then down through Tunstall forest to Butley and on to Hollesley. Our Chip Run on Thursday 23rd takes us off to a favourite of old. I still have a leaflet showing the Events Calendar for 2005, and there, on April 21st is a Run to Reg’s of Clacton. We must almost qualify for a loyalty card. Setting off from the car park behind the B&M store at Copdock along the A1214 to the Holiday Inn lights, turning left and left again at the Beagle roundabout to go down through Washbrook and the Wenhams to Raydon. A very short stretch on the A12 follows before turning off through Dedham and down through Ardleigh, Thorrington and St Osyth to Clacton. We are spoilt here for a choice in parking. Either behind the bus stop and in front of the church or round the corner The SAM Observer May 2022

into a ’proper’ car park in Elm Grove. Plenty of room inside Reg’s for all to be seated. Will Mr Roberts finish off with a giant sundae or will our new super trim version resist the calories?

Editorial 2022 So following on from my last post, I managed to get Mrs Editor to accompany me… on the bike.. We left and just went to Bury in the afternoon, because she was new to being on a pillion I took it easy and I could feel she was quite tense. I gave her the brief, sit like a bag of potatoes and only get on and off when I say. So Sunday May the first came along, and we set off to Bury again to join the Breakfast ride. Filled with petrol at the station and joined the group, we left in the first group, and because we were two were put second behind our leader Vini. I could feel that Mrs E was much more relaxed this trip and made it much easier to ride, A good run to Bomber Command and when we arrived I was expecting “Oh my as** ? but no, “I thoroughly enjoyed the trip” nice cup of coffee and slice. We walked round the monument and had to head back as we were meeting our son. Well I’ve signed up to the Great Challenge and now with my co-pilot we should get all our points in a good timely fashion instead of the last five minutes… Safe Riding

I hope that you have been enjoying the reports that members who go on ride outs have written, and as you can see, it doesn’t have to be a wordy passage, so feel free to scribble a few words down, a few pictures and next month you will have another great magazine to read Don’t forget to take your cameras and a notebook to record your trip then you can write a nice article about it for your favourite magazine. I have a word template if anyone would like it, email me and I’ll send you a copy which has all the formatting re-set on it.
