It gives me great pleasure in notifying members that the Society has successfully branded Suffolk lamb under the banner “Quality Suffolk Lamb”. An application was lodged with the UK and Irish Patent Authorities in November 2010. Our application was approved by the UK patent office in March 2011. The process is still ongoing with the Irish authorities. The Patent, known as a Certification Mark is owned solely by the Suffolk Sheep Society. The Society successfully obtained a £800 grant from Invest NI to cover the legal costs in obtaining a successful patent application. Negotiations are still ongoing with various retailers so watch this space.
Embryo Transfer Charge The Suffolk Sheep Society has been monitoring the use of AI and ET use within the breed. There is concern that the genetic pool of the Suffolk breed is narrowing which has long term negative implications. Modern breeding technology offers a tremendous tool for breeders but its overuse can lead to problems. For this reason Council has decided to impose a £15 charge on all ET lambs that are birth notified commencing 1st October 2011. Please note that all members have until the end of June to BN lambs before late fees commence. This provides members ample time to remove their bottom end thus avoiding this fee.
Effect of BN Charge on Performance Recording Flocks Council recognises the financial penalty that performance recorded flocks incur with BN fees. Unlike other flocks that can cull off their bottom end and avoid paying the BN charge, recording flocks must BN all lambs if their EBVs are not to suffer. Council would welcome some debate on this issue from Performance Recorded members and on the establishment of a Performance Recording Group. Please contact the Society Office with your comments.

The Original Suffolk on Adam Henson’s Farm The Suffolk Society approached Adam Henson in 2010 to see if he would recreate the original Suffolk sheep to celebrate the Societies 125th anniversary. The picture (on left) shows a Norfolk Horn Ewe with the lambs sired by a Southdown Ram. These two lambs are what our forefathers would have commenced with in the 1700’s to create the Suffolk breed of today. This photo was taken by Adam’s shepherd, Mike Caunter, on Adam’s Farm when the lambs were 3/4 days old. This story has appeared on Countryfile on two separate occasions with Society Chairman Michael Weaver who is now regarded as a Champion Sheep Catcher!! We look forward to seeing the lambs at weaning and I would encourage members to visit Adam’s farm.
