Ready for a Peanut Fest surprise

BY R.E. SPEARS III EDITOR There’s always some surprise in store at Peanut Fest. Maybe it’s the high school friend you haven’t seen for 30 years that you bump into while waiting for a fried Snickers bar. Maybe the surprise is that you got sick on that Delusion thing. More to the point, maybe the real surprise is that you DIDN’T get sick. Perhaps you’re surprised at the variety of food available (see note about Delusion, above) or about the variety of entertainment…. We’re always a bit surprised by the number of people who take the time to visit us in the Suffolk News-Herald’s tent, where we’ve operated a mobile newsroom (weather permitting) for the past few years. It’s nice to be able to

get to know our readers and to give interested passersby a taste of the newspaper’s daily production process. As in the past, we’ll be in our tent from about noon to closing time Friday and Saturday with laptops and desktop computers running, with a projector showing the ongoing work of our designer and with copies of the newspaper and many of its other publications, including Suffolk Living magazine, available to visitors. This year, however, we’ll also be joined for portions of the weekend by Suffolk businessman and historian Kermit Hobbs, author of a popular series on the murder of Tiberius Gracchus “Grac” Jones in Holland during the early part of the 20th century. Hobbs’ 18-part account of the murder, as well as the events that preceded and followed it, was a wildly

popular summer feature in the SNH, and the newspaper has joined him in a partnership to publish the full account — including an extra chapter and other additional information, photos and background about the case — in a high-quality, full color book that we’ll be selling before, during and after Peanut Fest. As a special enticement, folks who bring their copies to the SNH tent, along with those who buy copies at the festival, can get their copies signed by the author during his visits to the SNH tent. We’ll post a schedule of Hobbs’ expected appearances in the paper and at the tent. Folks who stop in to say hello also will be encouraged to shoot a selfie with one of our special displays and send it to us for possible publication in a future edition of Suffolk Living.

And finally — as always — we’re eager to see the photos you capture from Peanut Fest. Drop by our tent and share your camera photos with us — or email them to news@suffolknewsherald.com — for chances to see them online, in print in the SNH and later in Suffolk Living. We’ll be featuring reader photos in each of those media. Come see us next weekend and tell us what surprised you the most about this year’s Peanut Fest. We love to hear those stories.

From crabcakes to shawarma BY FRANK ROBERTS CORRESPONDENT

CMYK

Suffolk’s fall variety show, best known as Peanut Fest, has more food than you can shake a stick at, if that’s something you feel like doing. My job, to paraphrase some detective programs, is to reveal them to you and, some of them ARE killers. Fast food stuff, these ain’t; unusual stuff, some of them are. Let us explore some of my favorites: Piedmont Concessions, which does business as Sherri’s Crabcake offers what the name implies. Keith and Sherri Behney are co-chefs. They have visited many festivals and downed many a “cake,” noticing, as they say on their “crabby” website, “a shortage of good crabcakes” so crab research was the next step. They formed a crab partnership. Their full-time venture covers beaucoup mid-Atlantic states, sweating through 200 shows annually. They claim to use only fresh ingredients, plus “loads of lump and jumbo lump crabmeat.” Two Kings Concessions specializes in kettle popcorn. That’s a mix of sweet and salty, seasoned lightly with refined sugar. Originally, it was made in cast iron kettles. Since not every kitchen has one, ‘tis said you can use any type of pan. By the way, this historic item was introduced in the good, old U.S.A. in the 18th century, before the invention

of movies. Now, you can even find it in some grocery stores. Their sponsor? Who else? Good, ole Orville Redenbacher. Jerk chicken (sounds like my cousin) is a specialty at Caribbean and More, which is also selling shawarma. The former’s main ingredients are Scotch Bonnet chili peppers and allspice. It is hot, in more ways than one, in the Carib. The folks in Suffolk promise their offerings will be hot, but not scorching. Shawarma is a non-political Arabian dish (sounds like a Middle East movie star). If you are ambitious, you can spend a day making this. Oh, it’s usually eaten with tabbouleh (my favorite). Hammerhead Seafood offers Hank Williams’ favorite dish, jambalaya. It originated in Louisiana in the mid-19th century. Oh, it used to be called Jam Bolaya. Chicken, turkey and other varieties of meat go into this musical dish, along with veggies of choice. Yeah, it’s spicy. As they used to say in Brooklyn — “you pays yer money and you has your cherce.” Anyway, the above is just a sampling of the great Fest variety. Did I forget something? Oh, yeah, peanuts. Here’s an interesting fact: Americans spend almost $800 million a year on peanut butter, the most popular way to down peanuts. Good ol’ Jif, Skippy, and Peter Pan. It is healthy, and useful in telling dumb jokes. I’d tell you a joke about peanut butter, but you might spread it.

Come hungry, leave full BY FRANK ROBERTS CORRESPONDENT

Talk about different foods and drinks — Peanut Fest might catch up with the Heinz people. Here is a sort-of warning: Don’t come to the fun food fest full. Skip a couple of meals so you won’t have to skip too many food booths. Old food friends are mixed with some rookies. They all illustrate the meaning of “appetite.” When you’re eating, you’re ‘appy, and when you finish, you’re “tite,” so look for yummy-for-the-tummy, and visit every food booth within range. What’s yummy at the fest? Here is a stepby-step look. Of course, the volunteers working the event can point you to the delicious calories. 4All In One Catering has the standards — turkey legs, barbecue, hotdogs and corn dogs, wings ‘n fries. 4Allie’s Nuts — duh! — offers goobers including boiled peanuts. 4Aspara Chapter No. 43, Order Of the Eastern Star has “great family food by a group of ladies.” Some of the food: biscuit chicken, pork chops, ham, fish, sausage, barbecue, hot dogs, wingettes, tuna and

CMYK

chicken salad, baked goods, apple and sweet potato jacks, cookies and verrry large plates. 4Auntie Anne’s soft pretzels include pretzel dogs, pepperoni pretzels (yow), plus nuggets and mini dogs. 4Big Daddy’s Kettle Korn has what the name implies, plus fried Snickers (don’t snicker), fried Oreos, fried mac and cheese. 4D & J Concessions is the fest’s only ice vendor, and there’s also ice cream and floats. 4My good friend of many years, Doug Baker, is there with his Polish sausage (he’s as Polish as Paddy O’Shea), plus dogs and subs. To balance the family act, his son has Italian sausage and Philly steak. 4Funtastic Foods has chicken bacon skewers, pit beef, bratwurst and a lot of etceteras. 4Cajun? Try Hammerhead Seafood. They have jambalaya, but no crawfish pie or filet gumbo. (Hank Williams Sr. has all of that) They do have crabcake etouffee, bourbon chicken, alligator bites (and they do). 4Po Boys has the crawfish. 4Funtastic Foods offers such goodies as chicken bacon skewers, bratwurst and See FOOD page 10

Ten young ladies from throughout Suffolk represent the city’s five high schools on the 2015 Suffolk Peanut Festival court. One of them has been named the queen, although organizers had not yet announced the lucky young lady by the deadline for this section. A Peanut Fest Queen has been honored at every Peanut Festival since 1941. In recent years, the queen has been chosen from among the local high schools based on academic achievement, volunteerism and an essay on this year’s festival theme. The queen and her court will have several official duties, including appearing in the Peanut Fest parade and participating in the popular peanut butter sculpture contest on Saturday during the festival, which runs from Oct. 8-11 at the Suffolk Executive Airport. The Queen’s Banquet, which was held Oct. 2, is a fundraiser for the Pilot Club of Suffolk. Suffolk has been crowning a Peanut Queen since 1941, when Olive Cawley of New Jersey was bestowed the honor, according to the festival website. Cawley wore a gown made of peanuts and was accompanied by 50 princesses from dozens of communities and neighboring states. Detroit’s Patricia Donnelly, the 1939 Miss America, was the second festival queen; dignitaries including peanut baron Amedeo Obici met her at the airport, scattering roasted peanuts at her feet in place of rose petals.

Shrimp Feast back for more

Sunday, October 4, 2015 | Suffolk News-Herald

BY TRACY AGNEW NEWS EDITOR Good food, old and new friends and excellent entertainment are all on the agenda for the Suffolk Ruritan Club’s annual Shrimp Feast next Thursday. The Peanut Festival kick-off is held at the festival site and promises lots of food and fun for everyone. But the main goal of the event is to gather money to be able to support other nonprofit organizations as well as the Ruritans’ own initiatives. “Think about where the money goes,” Ruritan Jimmy Franks said. The club supports dozens of local organizations, gives scholarships and does its own initiatives, such as an event for wounded warriors and helping other nonprofit organizations, with the money. At this year’s National Night Out event at Sentara Obici Hospital, the Ruritans fed more than 1,700 people from their trailer. Ruritan E.C. Harris said the Shrimp Feast is one of the most important fundraising events of the year. “There’s so many places in the community that if they didn’t have charitable organizations raising money for them, they would fold up,” Harris said.

Peanut Fest 2015 | Page 11

This year’s feast will feature shrimp, barbecue, sides and beverages. Celeste Kellogg, a country artist and Smithfield native, will supply the entertainment. And then there’s all the folks you see that you haven’t seen in forever, Harris said. “It’s like a family reunion or a high school reunion,” he said. Tickets are $30 in advance, which provides the ticketholder with free parking, or $40 at the gate, which would require the guest to pay the $15 parking fee at the gate to the festival if they do not already have a parking pass. The Oct. 8 event will take place from 3 to 7 p.m. at the Suffolk Executive Airport. Tickets are available at the following businesses: Bennett’s Creek Pharmacy, Virginia Commonwealth Bank, Line-X of Suffolk, Cross Realty, BB&T Bank, Roy and Ricky’s, Mike Duman Auto Sales, Dr. Robertson’s Eye Care, Grafik Trenz Smithfield, Quality Cleaners, Xenith Bank, Citizen’s Bank in Windsor, Ricky’s Custom Carts, Major Signs, Aamco Transmissions and City of Suffolk Tourism. Cash or checks are accepted for tickets. Make checks payable to Suffolk Ruritan Club. Call 620-8625 or 434-9240 for more information.

Thrills, tradition await in arena

BY TITUS MOHLER STAFF WRITER

CMYK

The 38th Suffolk Peanut Festival promises excitement in the arena as it seeks to continue one old tradition and re-establish another. The demolition derby endures as a major draw for local families, and 2015 festival chairman Jimmy Bryant is hoping a renewed emphasis on the truck and tractor pull will get the same reaction from the public. The appeal of these arena events is simple and undeniable. Theresa Earles, volunteer publicity coordinator for the Peanut Fest, easily pointed to why the demolition derby is so consistently captivating. “I think it’s every little kid’s dream,” she said. “If you think about when you were a little kid and you have the Matchbox cars and you’re ramming them into each other and they’re crashing and flying across the room, it’s essentially the same thing but with real cars and real people.” Locals and others can enter cars they are not afraid to get beaten up, and they compete in multi-car heats to see which will be the last car standing — or rolling. “It is crashing, banging, pushing, dust flying, noise, engines revving — it is everything you could ever imagine and more,” Earles said.

The event is set to start at 6 p.m. on Friday, but spectators would be wise to come early to ensure a good spot among the arena’s bleacher seating. “It fills up really early, and folks come back year after year to stake out their favorite seat with their families,” Earles said. And if someone wants to enter a car, she said, “They can go on our website, SuffolkPeanutFest.com, and under ‘Schedule,’ there’s a tab specifically for the demolition derby, and they can click on the demolition derby entry form, and they can enter that

way.” The derby will be put on by an organization called Nation-wide Demolition Derby, while Big Daddy Motorsports will be bringing the truck and tractor pull to Suffolk. Festival chairman Jimmy Bryant said the allure of the truck and tractor pull is the big engines. “You’ve got the big tractors, and the kids love it; the trucks are bigger and louder,” he said. “In the region that we live in the farming community, truck and tractor pulls have been around for a long time.”

But he noted they have come and gone over the last few years at the Peanut Fest, and the goal now is to try to make it a consistent event at the festival. While this year’s truck and tractor pull will not be as large as others in Virginia, “we’re trying to bring this back and grow it into something a little bit bigger each year,” he said. The event is set to start at noon on Saturday, and Earles noted Big Daddy Motorsports is looking to do both a truck and tractor pull and a tough truck competition.

NITTY GRITTY DIRT BAND

OUTLAWS

Outlaws, a Blackhawk and a lot of Dirt

BY FRANK ROBERTS CORRESPONDENT

Suffolk Peanut Fest has some fandarn-tastic entertainment Saturday and Sunday. In addition to the many local, regional and national acts performing on the Harvest Family Stage, in the Peanut Lounge and on the Budweiser Main Stage, there are “not-to-bemissed” concerts with a trio of rockin’ country groups. Check this line-up: The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, The Outlaws and Blackhawk. The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band will be the headline show on Saturday, and the other two will be on the same Main Stage on Sunday — three excellent

reasons for attending the annual fun fest. Altogether, the bands have been making music — mostly wild — for more than half a century. And, as you well know by now it’s all FREE, as in FREE. You pay to park, and then you can freely enjoy everything this happy annual event has to offer man, woman and child. Let’s take a blow-by-blow look at what’s happening concert-wise beginning with the Nit-Grits, who will show up Saturday. The foursome has been around since the late 1960s. One of the secrets of their success has to do with constantly pleasing their multitudinous fans,

whose age group is seven to 70. Face it. The music business is fickle — artists come and go as through a revolving door. Not so the NGDB who, like the battery bunny and/or the Mississippi River, just keep rolling along. “The secret of success is that we all love to play,” Bob Carpenter said in a phone interview. “We enjoy live shows. we stay healthy. We’ve been through a lot of generations of fans, so we’ve had a lot of hit songs through a lot of different decades.” Hits include, “Will the Circle Be Unbroken?” with Johnny Cash and several other important guests and, of course, the much honored, “Mr. Bojangles.” “Circle” has the singular honor

of induction into the U.S. Library of Congress. That recording was later followed by “Mr.B.,” part two, also a major hit. Carpenter has the best of both worlds. He loves the shows, and he loves to travel. Does anything get on his nerves? The answer is quick in coming: “Rap. I don’t listen to that. It’s not bad music, but I just don’t get it. I haven’t acquired a taste for it.” What kind of music does he like? Just about anything else, much of it filling his iPod. Fortunately, for Carpenter and his cohorts, people love the NGDB, and that’s been the story since the midSee MUSIC page 20

‘60s. He joined the crew in ‘77. He finds time to read, concentrating on literature about science and technology. “I like science-fiction — most of that stuff comes true,” he said. “I haven’t seen a flying saucer, but I’m still looking.” His home is in sunny California. He and his wife have a son who is in music management in Nashville. Hobbies? He has ‘em, but can’t find time for them. “I don’t ski as much, and I don’t play golf as much,” said Carpenter, who spends most of his time with bandmates Jimmie Fadden, Jeff Hanna and John McEuen. Why not? That’s where the money is and, more importantly, that is where the NGDB is. They are pioneers in the successful and tasteful mix of country rock and American roots music. Note: King Tut might have enjoyed the Americana music of the NGDB. The band’s first appearance in 1966 was in Long Beach. Their first name was Toot Uncommon, a reference, it is supposed, to King Tutankhamen, the boy monarch who ruled Egypt around 1324 B.C. He was the world’s most famous pharaoh. Stories about him were probably called — er — pharaoh tales. Now — about Sunday, the fest’s closing day: That’s when the other two show up with some wild ‘n’ woolly offerings. Interestingly, both bands have several common members, most prominently, singerguitarist Henry Paul, who has been an off-and-on Outlaw since 1972, and was Blackhawk’s founder in the mid 1990s. The Outlaws' biggest hit is “Green Grass and High Tides.” Blackhawk had a string of hits including, “Like There’s No Yesterday.” The Outlaws specialty is Southern rock, complete with smooth vocals, while Blackhawk offers a handsome blend of melody and harmony. All three bands have one thing in common. The word is “excitement.” They offer it without letting up.

No matter what your family is like — parents or grandparents with children or teens — there is sure to be something for everyone in the family at the Suffolk Peanut Festival. “From little kids to seniors, we have a schedule packed with activities and entertainment for all ages,” said Theresa Earles, publicity coordinator for the Peanut Festival. Families with younger children will definitely want to hit the Gooberland Family Area, Earles said. The Harvest Family Stage is there, and it will feature performances by middle and high school orchestras and choruses, cloggers and dance groups. Kids will have fun learning about animals up close and personal at the Rockin’ A Ranch Petting Zoo, as well as pony and camel rides that are available. Face painting, bounce houses and a trackless train are also among the attrac-

tions kids won’t want to miss, Earles said. Other family-friendly activities are scattered throughout the festival site. The Rad Hatter teaches festivalgoers how to turn a simple paper bag into a one-of-a-kind hat. Glitter, feathers, stickers and even peanuts will be available to decorate hats. “Bold, wild, a little wacky, nothing is off limits when it comes to decorating a Rad Hatter headpiece,” Earles said. The Suffolk Art Gallery tent also will offer hands-on artsy fun. When kids want to “move it move it,” they can hit the Silent Disco area. “This is one of those breakout-of-your-shell, dance-likenobody’s-watching moments,” Earles said. Silent Disco participants get a set of illuminated wireless headphones, programmed by a DJ on site. Only those with headphones can hear the music they are dancing to. See FAMILY page 22

More than peanuts at the Fest

Sunday, October 4, 2015 | Suffolk News-Herald

BY ALYSSA ESPOSITO STAFF WRITER Those who have been to the Peanut Fest before know it’s not just any old festival. Apart from the peanuts and the traditional festival-like activities you might expect, the festival offers some unique activities for people of all ages and stages of life. It all starts on Thursday and goes through next Sunday at the Suffolk Executive Airport. “This is our busiest time of year,” said Theresa Earles, the fair’s publicity coordinator. The team has been working to make this year’s festival a great one, and along with the traditional midway rides and the large selection of foods, there will be silent disco, contests, music, arts and crafts and more. “(There’s) something for everybody,” Earles said. Throughout the festival, contests will test guests’ skills on chalk art, eating Buffalo wings, playing corn hole and singing karaoke. On Saturday evening, the Harvest Family Stage will feature karaoke performances, where guests can sing a song of their choice and potentially win a prize. “The people who are in the karaoke contest can really sing,” Earles said. Also on the Harvest Family Stage will also be performances by middle and high school musical groups, local musicians, clogging groups, dance groups and church groups throughout the weekend, Earles said.

Peanut Fest 2015 | Page 21

Along with these, more musical performances will take place on the Budweiser Main Stage and in the Peanut Lounge. The lounge will host performances by regional musicians and have an overall “acoustic vibe,” Earles said. “It’s also just a nice place to sit,” she added. Silent Disco is another music-themed activity taking place on Friday and Saturday nights. The activity was first featured in the festival last year. Participants wear individual sets of wireless headphones and turn them to one of a few different channels, Earles said. Everyone can select their own individual channel and enjoy actually dancing to the beat of their own drum. In another tent, there will be “handmade, homemade goods,” Earles said. The Rad Hatter is another art-themed tent. There, guests can create paper bag hats to wear around the festival and take pictures. The festival also has some new features this year, Earles said. The Peanut Queen, her court and the chairmen of the event won’t be sculpting peanut butter, but instead, carving pumpkins. The festival has a brand new website. For those who would like to know more about the event, visit www.suffolkpeanutfest.org. Guests can purchase their parking passes at the Suffolk Visitor Center or at the fair entrance. The cost is $15 per car or $25 for a four-day pass.

"It’s terrific fun for the dancers and rather amusing to watch everyone dancing in silence,” Earles said. “The kids love it, and I’m pretty sure the parents do, too.” Since discos are best enjoyed in the dark, you’ll want to save this one for later in the day. Friday will be a good day for the youngest children to visit, as there is free parking from 10 a.m. to noon and special Kiddie Day activities. Other don’t-miss attractions for children and families are Bear Path Acres, which showcases rescued and rehabilitated wildlife; Friday’s demolition derby, where kids can get their fill of crash-bang for the night; Saturday’s truck and tractor pull; and Saturday’s chalk art contest. Then, of course, there’s the rides and games on the midway and all kinds of kid-friendly foods like corndogs and funnel cakes.
