FUNGI A N D S L I M E - M O U L D S IN S U F F O L K Martin and Pam Ellis It is forty years since Arthur Mayfield published, in these Transactions, the last of his five very useful lists of Suffolk Fungi and Slime-Moulds. These lists are now much in need of revision; taxonomic studies have resulted in numerous name changes and 1,845 new names have been added. The number of species recorded in Suffolk now stands at 3,762. At least 9,000 species of fungi are known to occur in Britain. Many of these are common and widespread, others have very limited distribution. Some groups are very much better represented in county lists than others. The numbers recorded in Suffolk given below separately for each group are compared with the totals for Britain which are shown in brackets. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8.
Agaricales and Boletales, 1100 (2050) Aphyllophorales (Bracket, club and resupinate fungi), 248 (570) Heterobasidiomycetes (Jelly fungi), 27 (100) Gasteromycetes (Puffballs, earthstars and stinkhorns), 45 (105) Uredinales (Rusts), 155 (290) Ustilaginales (Smuts), 37 (105) Ascomycetes (Cup and flask fungi), 1238 (3200) Deuteromycetes (Conidial fungi without established perfect states), 710 (1900) 9. Phycomycetes (Downy mildews and moulds), 71 (350) 10. Myxomycetes or Mycetozoa (Slime-Moulds), 131 (340) It will be seen that smuts, jelly fungi, downy mildews and moulds are under recorded in Suffolk, as they appear to be also in most other counties. Clearly more work needs to be done with these. New and exciting finds can be made also, however, in other groups and it is often the amateur naturalists who make them. In October 1984, Mrs M. Coe found Ileodictyon cibarius, a beautiful and very rare Gasteromycete in the Mill River Valley, Brightwell, near Ipswich. In recent years three previously undescribed Discomycetes were discovered in Suffolk and have now been described. Some very uncommon species are seen year after year in just one or two places; an example is Battarraea phalloides growing amongst elm suckers on a hedgebank at Blyford. It is hoped that the publication of this list will stimulate interest and encourage Suffolk naturalists to see if they can make additions to it. Some uncommon species such as the rust Puccinia hydrocotyles have been found in Norfolk but not so far in our county, although the host plant, Hydrocotyle vulgaris, is common enough. The study over a number of years of just one wood can yield many new records; more than eleven hundred species have been found in Dunwich Forest. We are very grateful to the staff of the Suffolk Biological Records Centre and to many fellow mycologists and others who have helped us in various ways. Reg and Lil Evans hold courses on fungi each year at Belstead 1
Mouse and have sent us all their records. From 1950 until 1981 the late Dr A . F . Parker-Rhodes organised fungus study weeks at the Flatford Mill Field Study Centre, foraying extensively in the surrounding area. Dr J . Cowan, one of his followers, continues this good work. Students from Cambridge University visit Thetford Forest annually and the British Mycological Society has held fungus forays in Suffolk on several occasions. Field Clubs and other local natural history groups often devote one or more of their outdoor meetings to the study of fungi. Use has been made of records from all these sources. In the interest of space economy it was clearly neither desirable nor necessary to give details of all the many thousands of specimens examined. Sites where interesting or uncommon fungi occur are numbered. When a species has been found on five or less of these sites the relevant numbers are incorporated in the list.
