THE HOVER-FLIES ( S Y R P H I D A E ) OF MEADOW,
GROMFORD
SNAPE
W I L F R I D S . GEORGE
ON nineteen occasions a visit of an hour or two was made to this small reserve of the Suffolk T r u s t for N a t u r e Conservation, and as many hover-flies as possible were identified. T h e visits were spread over two summers, thirteen being made in 1969 and six during 1970. T o save space, each visit is given a code letter. Those during 1969 are referred to by the capital letters A - M , and lower-case letters denote the 1970 observations. Since each of the latter are within five days of the 1969 dates, the letters correspond for the two seasons. A B C D E F G H I J K L M

T h e above list contains fifty-five of the 234 species of Syrphidae recorded f r o m Britain. Since the reserve consists of an overgrown patch of marshland, it is not surprising that there is a tendency to be a deficiency of many typical " w o o d l a n d " hoverflies. W. S. George, M.P.S.,
