TRANSACTIONS A PRELIMINARY LIST OF THE FAUNA OF STA VERTON PARK, SUFFOLK Part 2 Insecta: Coleoptera R. C . WELCH a n d P. T .
HARDING
S T A V E R T O N Park has long been recognised as an important park woodland site but the Coleoptera have received surprisingly little attention until comparatively recently. C. Morley, although mentioning Staverton in the introduction to his Coleoptera of Suffolk (1899), does not record any species from this locality. In his Supplement (1915) to that work, Mycetochares bipustulata (111.)=Mycetochara humeralis (F.) and Aleochara cuniculorum Kr. are recorded from Staverton. A. cuniculorum is also recorded from Staverton in his account of the Coleoptera in The Victoria History of the County of Suff olk (1911). D. R. Nash informs us that in Morley's personal annotated copies of the 1889 and 1915 lists, deposited at Ipswich Museum, a further Staverton record has been added. This is Liod.es humeralis Kug.=Anisotoma humeralis (F.) "several in fungi on dead holly bark 22.V.1917". All three species were taken in 1972 during the present survey. By studying Morley's diaries, also held at Ipswich, Nash also found a description of "Conopalpus testaceus (OL), one beaten from rotten oak branch in middle of Staverton Thicks, 26th June, 1923". There appear to be no other records of this species from Suffolk.
This paucity of information regarding the entomology of park woodland is regrettably common and little comparative data exists and even less has been published. Donisthorpe's (1939) records for Windsor Great Park are inextricably mixed with those of Windsor Forest. Moccas Park in Herefordshire has been a favourite haunt for coleopterists for many years but no account of its fauna has been published. J. R. Tomlin (1949 and 1950) in his account of Herefordshire Coleoptera includes Moccas as a locality for 151 species and A. M. Massee (1964), in an unpublished report to the Nature Conservancy lists an additional eighty-five less common species. About the same time C. Johnson (1964) visited Dunham Park, Cheshire, a noted collecting area in the latter part of the last Century, whilst R. A. Crowson and F. A. Hunter (1964) and Hunter and Johnson (1966) studied the Coleoptera associated with old trees at Grimsthorpe Park, Lincolnshire, an area previously unknown entomologically. Current interest in the Coleoptera of Staverton started with C. S. Barham who collected mainly in the Thicks regularly between 1956 and 1961 (see also Nash, 1972). Crowson (1963) visited the locality in April, 1960, and found "the first larvae

attributed to Tetratoma desmaresti Latr. in a yellowish encrusting fungus (?Stereum sp.) in crevices of the bark of old oaks". Johnson and E. W. Aubrook spent a day at Staverton in August, 1972, and the records of all these collectors are indicated by their initials in the following list. The majority of species were recorded by P. T . Harding and R. C. Welch during visits at varying dates throughout 1972 and 1973. A number of Coleoptera collected by P. C. Tinning in October, 1972, from litter residues in hollow oaks have also been incorporated in this list. TABLE 1 on page 289 lists ten of the rarer species associated with old timber at Staverton and shows their known distribution in the other three parks mentioned above, and in three old royal forest areas. Some of the species in TABLE 1 deserve special mention. Batrisodes venustus is a rare species often found associated with ants, particularly Lasius brurtneus (Lat.) in Windsor Forest, although Pearce (1957) records it from "under rotten wood, especially oak". Next to Habrocerus capillaricornis, B. venustus was the most common species of Coleoptera extracted from dry leaf litter from hollow oaks at Staverton. According to Allen (1966) Procraerus tibialis is "very thinly dispersed about Southern England up to the north Midlands, always however, as a great rarity except at Windsor". Malthodes crassicornis, the rarest member of this genus, is known only from some five other localities in south-east England including Windsor and Epping Forests (see Allen, 1951b). Allen (1970) has also shown that the species of Phloeotyra occurring in England is P. vaudoueri Muls (see Kaszab in Freude, Harde and Lohse, 1969) and not P. rufipes (Gyll.), Nash (1972 and 1974) follows this change in nomenclature when recording Barham's record of this species. Nomenclature in the list of species mainly follows Kloet and Hincks (1945) and Tottenham (1949) although it includes a number of recent additions to the British fauna. Acrotrichis platonoffi Renk, has been recorded from two Scottish and five English vice-counties (see Johnson, 1967) and will most probably prove to be fairly common throughout Britain. On the other hand A. insularis (Makl.) (see Johnson, 1966) is widely distributed but much less common. Nomenclature for the genus Sepedophilus (=Conosomus Auctt.) follows P. M. Hammond (1972) who provides a key which includes the Separation of S. testaceus (F.) and S. marshami (Steph.). Cypha pulicarius Er. is a species new to Britain although Johnson (1968) suspected that a damaged male sent to him from the Royal Scottish Museum may have been this species. Another male was taken a month earlier than the Staverton specimen, from Kinrara, near Aviemore, East Inverness, and R. C. Welch is currently examining British material of this genus. Gyrophaena joyioides WĂźsth. only known elsewhere

in England from Blean Woods, Kent (see Welch, 1968) was the most abundant and widespread member of the genus in fungi at Staverton. The Ilyobates from the park proved to be the true I. nigricollis (Pk.), regarded by Johnson (1968) as the rarer species in Britain. The record of Aleochara stichai Lik. is based on a single female, although at present insufficient specimens have been seen to know whether differences in microsculpture are reliable characters (see Welch, 1969). The following list of 415 species contains a number of rare and local Coleoptera, many of which are directly associated with the ancient trees of the park. These species must ultimately be at risk since there is no younger age-class present and no natural regeneration to replace them. We would like to thank J. F. Kemball for readily granting permission to us and our colleagues to visit and collect on his property. We are also grateful to D. R. Nash for details of Morley's records.
