POST MORTEM EXAMINATION OF WILD MAMMALS AND BIRDS I. F. KEYMER, The Pathologist, Zoological Society of London, Regent's Park, London, N.W.l has offered to carry out postmortem examinations on wild mammals and birds free of charge to members of the Suffolk Naturalists' Society. He is particularly keen to receive carcases of red squirrels or if possible live sick squirrels, because together with Dr. D. Bidwell, a virologist at the London Zoo, he is studying the viral disease of red squirrels which produces symptoms resembling myxomatosis in rabbits. Very little is known about this infection and it is important to learn more about the disease now that our native red squirrel is declining in numbers. DR.

All carcases must be securely wrapped in airtight Containers and preferably refrigerated for about 12 hours before packing. They must not be deep frozen and no preservative should be added. A complete history should be provided whenever possible. The sender should address the parcel to Dr. I. F. Keymer and mark it 'urgent, pathological specimen'. A note should be enclosed to the effect that the sender is a member of the Suffolk Naturalists' Society. On completion of the examination Dr. Keymer will send a post-mortem report. It is stressed that this offer is confined to genuine free-living wild mammals and birds, and not pets. If a live squirrel is available then you are asked to contact Dr. Keymer or Dr. Bidwell by telephone (01-722 3333) as soon as possible, when arrangements will be made to collect the animal. The cost of the telephone call will be refunded.
