LOCAL MOTHS.
NEW LOCALITIES FOR LOCAL MOTHS. BY THE BISHOP OF ST. EDMUNDSBURY AND IPSWICH, D.D., F.E.S.
[The following List of kinds, already recorded from the County, is of recent compilation and considerably extends the known distribution of a few of our rarer Lepidoptera.—Ed.] Crambus hamellus, Thnb. Minsmere in Dunwich. Homoeosoma sinuella, Fab. Worlington. Tortrix viburnana, WV. Hemley. Penthina sellana, Hub. Worlington. Antithesia salicella, Linn. Lackford. Sericoris bifasciana, Haw. Lackford. Sericoris littoralis, Crt. Shingle Street, Hollesley. Orthotasnia striana, WV. Freckenham. Eriopsela fractifasciana, Haw. Worlington. Sciaphila communana, Zell. Worlington. Grapholitha nigromaculana, Haw. Lackford. Halonota trigeminana, Ste. Shingle Street. Semasia ianthinana, Dup. Lackford. Retinia pinicolana, Dbl. Sutton Heath.* Dicrorampha simpliciana,T Haw. East Bergholt. Eupoecilia Vectisana, Wstw. Shingle Street. Ochsenheimeria bisontella, Zell. Worlington. Gelechia (Bryotropha) domestica, Haw. Ipswich. Mr. Waller points out that many of the above are of peculiar interest, adding that C. hamellus has been recorded only fro West Suffolk, Santon Downham and near Thetford ; P. sellana from Tuddenham and Southwold ; A. salicella is represented by two examples from Bentley Woods in 1893 ; E. fractifasciana, by records from Brandon alone ; S. communana, b Copdock specimens; G. domestica from Lowestoft ; and 0. bisontella from Bentley and Tuddenham in 1896, though M Morley took it commonly at the roots of Erodium cicutarium the top of Gorleston Cliff in mid-July 1928. Also Dr. Whittingham has captured another Gelechia, probably a Lita ; but its determination is still sub judice. It may be said that Colon Nurse's collection contains a few further species that are not in our Suffolk List; most of our smallest moths will bear overhauling and, when this is satisfactorily accomplished, the County's total may well be expected to attainfifteenhundred different kinds. *Since its occurrence on the coast, only, before 1900 this species has occurred plentifully among Scotsfirsat Orford in July, 1902 (Gibbs) ; at Southwold (Canon Crutwell) ; and in great numbers at Ampton during 1910 (Nurse ; Entom, 1911, p. 221).
