1999 Notes on Microlepidoptera The following species were observed at Framlingham, either at street lamps or at shop windows. The species numbers follow Bradley (1998) and the vernacular names are taken either from the same source or from Heslop (1947). Notes on larval foods are based on Emmet (1991). Species already recorded in 1998 have been omitted here. 463 Ypsolopha vittella Linn. (Black-backed Smudge) on beech, elm, leaves, flowers. Morley (1937) cited it as not very common about elms. 4 August. 464 Plutella xylostella Linn. (Diamond-Black Moth) on Cruciferae. An immigrant. 4 August. 648 Endrosis sarcitrella Linn. (White-shouldered House Moth) on dry animal or vegetable materials. 4 August. 658 Carcina quercana Fabr. (Oak Long-horned Flat-body) on deciduous trees and bushes. 1 August. 981 Archips rosana Linn. (Rose Tortrix) on trees and bushes. Morley regarded it as by no means general. 4 August. 1042 Acleris rhombana D. & S. (Rhomboid Tortrix) on trees and shrubs. 28 October. 1111 Bactra lancealana Hb. (Dusty Marble) on Juncus, Scirpus and Cyperus. Morley described it as frequent in swamps. There is no lack of water at Framlingham. 6 August. 1275 Dichrorampha flavidorsana Knaggs (Plain Silver-fringed Drill) on tansy. Only genitalian inspection or breeding can ensure correct identification. This specimen was named only from external features. 1 August. 1290 Chilo phragmitella Hb. (Wainscot Grass-veneer) on reeds. Morley cited it as quite common in marshes. The meres at Framlingham would no doubt qualify. 9 August. 1313 Catoptria pinella Linn. (Pearl Grass-veneer) on grasses and rushes. Morley described it as local. 2 August. 1331 Acentria ephemerella D. & S. (Water Veneer) on aquatic plants. Morley said it was apparently local but widespread. 5 August. 1334a Scoparia basistrigalis Knaggs (Mottled Grey) – biology unknown. 4, 5, August. 1342 Eudonia angustea Curtis (Narrow-winged Grey) on mosses. 24, 26, 27 October. 1345 Elophila nymphaeata Linn. (Brown China Mark) on aquatic plants. 3 August. 1356 Evergestis forficalis Linn. (Garden Pebble) on Cruciferae. 1, 6, 8 August. 1361 Pyrausta aurata Scop. (General Purple-and-Gold) on labiates, especially mints. 3 August. 1398 Nomophila noctuella D. & S. (Rush Veneer) on Trifolium, Polygonum, grasses. An immigrant. 1, 2 August. 1405 Pleuroptya ruralis Scop, (Mother of Pearl) on nettle. 9 August. 1438 Trachycera suavella Zinck. (Porphyry Knot-horn) on blackthorn. Morley commented that it was apparently still rare in Suffolk. 3 August. 1452 Phycita roborella D. & S. (Dotted Knot-horn) on oak. 1 August. 1524 Emmelina monodactyla Linn (Common Plume) on bindweeds. 4, 5, 8, 9 August.
