Bryophyte Recording in Suffolk Very few botanists in the county actually record bryophytes so a modest target has to be set in comparison to that of the flowering plant people. To date only some five hundred tetrads have been visited and many of those are under recorded because they have been visited only once. I would hope that a minimum of ten tetrads in a full 10-km square and a proportionate number in partial squares (60%) can be achieved. The average number of species per tetrad is about thirty eight. The benefit of repeat visits to a site is well illustrated by the activities of David Strauss at Dunwich Heath/Minsmere where he repeatedly finds new species, many rare in the county. During the past year a number of new and interesting records have been made. In January I visited Staverton Thicks with Johnny Turner to look for Suffolk’s only BAP liverwort, Pallavicinia lyellii. Unfortunately we failed to find this, but did discover another liverwort, Cephalozia lunulifolia which was new to Suffolk. Shortly afterwards two mosses new to the county turned up, Eucladium verticilliatum in Thetford Forest and Hookeria lucens near Ramparts field. It is perhaps more interesting to find a species known only from early records than to find a species entirely new to the area. David Strauss found the liverwort Gymnocolea inflata on Dunwich Heath not seen in the county for decades and in the summer the moss Bartramia pomiformis was found in Chediston churchyard, the first record since 1958.
