This excellent sunny period permitted us to observe 22 species in all and the daily species average rose to 13·03, a figure second only to that we recorded in 1995 (13·7). The most productive day was the 4 July, with 17 species. A “noticeable” absentee was the Brimstone but it was pleasant to see a male Clouded Yellow amongst crowds of immigrant Painted Ladies and Red Admirals. Encouragingly, the Wall Brown maintained its presence and the Small Heath returned after a long absence. The Comma apparently seemed to enjoy a successful season, particularly amongst elm saplings at Dennington. Alasdair Aston
