THE DIPTERA OF SUFFOLK PETER VINCENT

Part Two: Bibionidae, Bolitophilidae, Diadocidiidae, Ditomyiidae, Keroplatidae, Mycetophilidae, Sciaridae, Cecidomyiidae. The checklist begins with the first infraorder of the Lower Diptera the Tipulomorpha. In Part Two this is followed by the second infraorder of the Lower Diptera the Bibionomorpha. The Bibionomorpha contains two superfamilies, the Bibionoidea and the Sciaroidea. The Bibionoidea contains only one family, Bibionidae, whereas, the Sciaroidea contains seven families, Bolitophilidae, Diadocidiidae, Ditomyiidae, Keroplatidae, Mycetophilidae, Sciaridae, and Cecidomyiidae. The Bibionidae are robust, hairy flies and some 215mm in length. The body colour is usually black but is partially red or yellow in some cases. The family includes the largest Bibionid Bibio marci (Linnaeus, 1758), the familiar St Mark’s fly. In Suffolk the Bibionidae are reasonably well known and of the 18 British species 17 have been recorded in the county. Bibio marci Trans. Suffolk Nat. Soc. 55 (2019)

Introduction The records that form this checklist are from the Watsonian vice-counties of East (v.c. 25) and West (v.c. 26) Suffolk which are of greater extent than the modern administrative county boundaries. Diptera are not well recorded in Suffolk, with few records of even quite common species. Therefore, although records are in the main collected at monad (O.S.1km square) or greater accuracy, in order to assess the relative abundance and distribution of a diptera species the hectad (O.S.10km square) is used as the base recording unit. Suffolk comprises of 54 hectads or part hectads. In this checklist of Suffolk Diptera, the arrangement of families follows as set out in Chandler (1998) and updates (Dipterists Forum, 2019). The classification of British diptera starts with the Lower Diptera (Nematocera) followed by the Brachycera. Within families, all taxa are listed alphabetically. Altogether there are at present 107 families of diptera recognised within the British fauna, and the British Isles list of diptera currently (June 2019) runs to some 7187 species (of which 41 are recorded from Ireland only) (Chandler, 2019), The layout of the checklist is that for each family the first division is by genus and then by species in alphabetical order. For most families, subfamilies and tribes are also recognised: and the genus can also be divided at subgenus level. For every individual species the species name (in bold type) is followed by the authority, then details of the first record of that species from Suffolk - place, date (to as much accuracy as possible) and recorder (where known). To give an indication of the distribution and the abundance of each species, this is followed by a list of all the hectads each species has occurred and the number of known records (in square brackets).

The families of Bolitophilidae, Diadocidiidae, Ditomyiidae, and Keroplatidae were all, until recently, subfamilies contained within the Mycetophilidae. However, revisions by European authors now consider them as a series of families in their own right. This group of families together with the Mycetophilidae, are the ‘true’ fungus gnats. In appearance they appear hump-backed, with long coxae and well-developed tibial spurs. They are generally some combination of brown, black and yellow, rarely conspicuously patterned, but sometimes brightly coloured like Hymenoptera. Most species are rather small, but some can reach a length of 10mm. There are 16 British Bolitophilidae species, at present 7 of which have been found in Suffolk, 3 British Diadocidiidae - 2 from Suffolk, 3 British Ditomyiidae - 2 from Suffolk, 52 British Keroplatidae - 28 from Suffolk and 493 British Mycetophilidae - 268 from Suffolk. The Sciaridae have similar appearance to the fungus gnats described above, however, they are readily separable in having the eyes produced over the antennae forming an eye-bridge and in having shorter coxae. They are generally dark in appearance and therefore are sometimes referred to as ‘black fungus gnats or midges’. Sciarids are often very small, rarely exceeding 4mm in length, lacking strong bristles; their wings have a characteristic venation but are unmarked. There are 266 species on the British checklist, but only 69 of these have been recorded from Suffolk. Bolitophilidae, Diadocidiidae, Ditomyiidae, Keroplatidae, Mycetophilidae, and Sciaridae are not well recorded in Suffolk. Identification issues mean that these families are often only recorded by specialists. This is especially true for the Sciaridae where all known reliable records were published in one paper (Menzel, Smith & Chandler, 2006). The majority of other fungus gnat records used in this checklist have been kindly supplied by Peter Chandler - organiser of the Dipterists Forum Fungus Gnat Recording Scheme. The Cecidomyiidae are very fragile, small long-legged insects, usually only 2–3 mm in length and many are smaller. They are characterised by long slender antennae with bead-like segments bearing a circlet of small spines and by hairy wings, unusual in Diptera. They are commonly known as gall midges as most, but not all of them, induce gall formation. Galls are caused by the larvae of gall midges feeding within plant tissue, creating abnormal plant growths. Adult Cecidomyiids are difficult to identify both at the larval and adult stages. However, the galls that are produced are unique to each species and are readily identifiable. The study of gall midges was originally undertaken by botanists rather than entomologists and even today most recording is carried out by specialist cecidologists. The arrangement of the Cecidomyiidae subfamilies in the checklist is the usual, well established, order based on phylogenetic relationships opposed to the standard alphabetical listings. As it stands the Cecidomyiidae are the largest family within the British diptera with some 654 species and, of those 97 have been recorded in Suffolk. All the Suffolk Cecidomyiidae are associated with higher plants, or with other mostly plant associated organisms. The host, where known, of the first known county record is noted in the checklist. Many of the gall midge records used in this checklist have been kindly provided by Jeremy Bowdrey - Suffolk plant gall recorder.
