SUFFOLK DIPTERA CHECKLIST

THE DIPTERA OF SUFFOLK PETER VINCENT Introduction The records that form this checklist are from the Watsonian vice-counties of East (v.c. 25) and West (v.c. 26) Suffolk which are of greater extent than the modern administrative county boundaries. Diptera are not well recorded in Suffolk, with few records of even quite common species. Therefore, although records are in the main collected at monad (O.S.1km square) or greater accuracy, in order to assess the relative abundance and distribution of a diptera species the hectad (O.S.10km square) is used as the base recording unit. Suffolk comprises of 54 hectads or part hectads. In this checklist of Suffolk Diptera the arrangement of families follows as set out in Chandler (1998) and updates (Dipterists Forum, 2020). The classification of British diptera starts with the Lower Diptera (Nematocera) followed by the Brachycera. Within families, all taxa are listed alphabetically. Altogether there are at present 107 families of diptera recognised within the British fauna, and the British Isles list of diptera currently (April 2020) runs to some 7204 species (of which 41 are recorded from Ireland only) (Chandler, 2020). The layout of the checklist is that for each family the first division is by genus and then by species in alphabetical order. For most families, subfamilies and tribes are also recognised: and the genus can also be divided at subgenus level. For every individual species the species name (in bold type) is followed by the authority, then details of the first record of that species from Suffolk - place, date (to as much accuracy as possible) and recorder (where known). To give an indication of the distribution and the abundance of each species, this is followed by a list of all the hectads each species has occurred and the number of known records (in square brackets). Part Three: Psychodidae, Trichoceridae, Anisopodidae, Mycetobiidae, Scatopsidae, Ptychopteridae, Dixidae, Chaoboridae, Culicidae, Thaumaleidae, Simuliidae, Ceratopogonidae, Chironomidae. The checklist begins in Part One with the first infraorder of the Lower Diptera the Tipulomorpha followed in Part Two by the second infraorder of the Lower Diptera the Bibionomorpha. Part Three contains the remaining three infraorders of the Lower Diptera; Psychodomorpha, Ptychopteromorpha and Culicomorpha. The Psychodomorpha comprises of four superfamilies, Psychodoidea, Trichoceroidea, Anisopodoidea and Scatopsoidea. The Ptychopteromorpha comprises of one superfamily, Ptychopteroidea and the Culicomorpha comprises of two superfamilies, Culicoidea and Chironomoidea. In turn the Psychodoidea contains one family, Psychodidae. The Trichoceroidea contains one family, Trichoceridae, the Anisopodoidea contains two families, Anisopodidae and Mycetobiidae and the Scatopsoidea contains one family, Scatopsidae. The Ptychopteroidea contains one family Ptychopteridae. The Culicoidea contains three families, Dixidae, Chaoboridae and Culicidae, whereas the Chironomoidea contains four families, Thaumaleidae, Simuliidae, Ceratopogonidae and Chironomidae. Trans. Commonly known as moth flies or owl midges, Psychodidae, are a familiar and common family of flies. Despite being readily recognised by their small size, hairy wings and bead like antennae, they are difficult to identify to species level and are hence poorly recorded. Only 29 of 99 British species have been found in Suffolk. With slender bodies and long feeble legs Trichoceridae are similar in appearance to some of the smaller Tipulidae (craneflies). However, the presence of ocelli and differing wing venation distinguishes the Trichoceridae from these other families. They are one of very few insects that appear in adult form during winter months and often congregate into dancing swarms, even in Winter Gnat Trichocera regelationis quite cold weather; hence their popular name of winter gnats. Of the 10 British species 8 have been recorded from Suffolk. Anisopodidae and Mycetobiidae are two small families of flies. They are again slender, long legged flies. Until 1986 Mycetobiidae was included in Anisopodidae, but the two families can easily be separated by differing wing venation. Anisopodidae are commonly referred to as window gnats as they are familiar intruders to buildings; the adults often can be found sitting around windows and on walls where they are often mistaken for large mosquitoes (they cannot bite). There are 4 British species of Anisopodidae, 3 from Suffolk and 3 British species of Mycetobiidae of which there is only one Suffolk record. Scatopsidae are a family of very small to small black flies. They were once considered to be a subfamily of the Bibionidae, and in general appearance, short antennae and wing venation, that family does appear similar. However, there are more differences than similarities and are now not thought to be closely related at all. Scatopsidae are not easy to identify to species and although 26 of the 46 British species have been recorded from Suffolk there are comparatively few modern records from the county. Similar in appearance to some Tipulidae, Ptychopteridae are sometimes referred to by their common name of phantom craneflies and are one of the most striking and easily recognised of the Lower Diptera. They are medium sized to large flies with black lustrous bodies, often with yellow or brown markings on the abdomen and legs and with markings on the wings. Of the 7 British species 6 are found in Suffolk.

The three Culicoidea families of Dixidae, Chaoboridae and Culicidae are small slender flies, with narrow wings and delicate legs and antennae; all have aquatic larvae. Dixidae are commonly known as meniscus midges and Chaoboridae as phantom midges - so named because the larvae have a remarkably transparent body. Culicidae are the mosquitoes. Mosquitoes uniquely possess a long proboscis, which in the female, is adapted to penetrate the skin of an animal to permit blood-feeding, the blood used to provide protein for the development of their eggs. This blood feeding can be a nuisance to human activities as well as being the vector of several serious diseases around the world, of which malaria is the best known. There are 15 British Dixidae species, at present 11 of which have been found in Suffolk, 6 British Chaoboridae - 3 from Suffolk, and 32 British Culicidae - 24 from Suffolk. Thaumaleidae are small delicate yellowish-brown flies. They are very much associated with the upland areas of Northern and Western Britain, where the aquatic immature stages favour a very thin film of water flowing over stones or rocks; hence their common name of trickle midges. This type of habitat is rare in Suffolk and the only Suffolk record is of Thaumalea testacea Ruthe, 1831, where according to Claude Morley (1946-1948) ‘One female flew on to a motor car in Thelnetham Fen at 3 p.m. on the 25th June 1944’. There are 3 British species. Commonly known as black-flies, Simuliidae are small flies with broad wings, short stout bodies and short, thick legs. Both sexes often assemble in clouds around people’s heads, especially in sultry weather near water, the females’ bites being both irritating and capable of transmitting diseases. The immature stages are aquatic and require moving water. Many records in the A Black Fly Simuliidae checklist are of larvae and pupae. Of the 35 British species 18 have been recorded from Suffolk. The Ceratopogonidae are a large and difficult family with comparatively few Suffolk records. Though, anyone who has been to Scotland will be familiar with flies of this family, as the Highland midge Culicoides impunctatus Goetghebuer, 1920 belongs to the Ceratopogonidae or biting midges. They are very small flies, dark in colour, with broad wings. Females feed on the blood of vertebrates, including humans, to get protein for egg-laying and are responsible for the biological transmission of internationally important arboviruses of livestock. There have been 170 species recorded from Britain of which only 37 have been recorded from Suffolk. In many freshwater habitats, Chironomidae are among the most abundant flies, but again difficulties with identification mean they are poorly recorded, especially in Suffolk. In appearance Chironomidae are quite distinctive with a characteristically humped thorax that overhangs the head and in the main males have plumed antennae and wings that are shorter than the abdomen. Many chironomid species

show a wide range of tolerance to harsh environmental conditions and since chironomid larvae, are found in most of the types of freshwater ecosystems, they constitute good bioindicators to assess the water quality. Of the 610 British species 74 have been recorded from Suffolk. Chironomid Midge Records for this section of the checklist come mainly from Suffolk Biodiversity Information Centre (SBIS), and the National Biodiversity Network (NBN), with historical records from the Transactions of the Norfolk & Norwich Naturalists’ Society (Morley & Atmore, 1915) and the Transactions of the Suffolk Naturalists’ Society (Morley, 1946-1948). Other records were obtained from, Coe, Freeman & Mattingly (1950), Freeman & Lane (1985), Withers (1989), Laurence (1997), Snow (1998), and Crosskey (2005). References Chandler, P. J. (ed.) (1998).
