The Suffolk-Nansemond Historical Society
In operation since 1966, the Suffolk-Nansemond Historical Society has become an advocate for the community by bringing attention to people and places that are in danger of being forgotten or lost. The beautiful Phillips-Dawson house (c.1889) has been the headquarters of the SNHS for over 15 years. In the 1920s, the house’s Bank Street entrance, as illustrated above, was enlarged to be the primary entry way to the home. Today the SNHS has rotating exhibits and lectures, and facilitates local historical research.

Suffolk Visitor Center (c. 1839)
Overlooking the Nansemond River, the former historic Nansemond County Courthouse retains its commanding presence and historical significance as the Suffolk Visitor Center. The first floor provides an exhibit gallery highlighting the history of Suffolk and the Great Dismal Swamp, a greeting and information area, and a gift shop. The second floor houses the offices for Suffolk Tourism, and the outdoor area includes an open-air Pavilion, used for various family-friendly events. 524 N. Hannukah and the Menorah
Hannukah is a Jewish festival commemorating the rededication of the Second Temple in Jerusalem. It is also known as the Festival of Lights. Hannukah is observed for eight nights and days by lighting candles of a candelabrum with nine branches, called a menorah. One branch is typically placed above or below the others and its candle is used to light the other eight candles. Each night, one additional candle is lit until all eight candles are lit together on the final night of the festival. Other Hannukah festivities include playing the game of dreidel and eating foods such as latkes and sufganiyot, and dairy foods. Hannukah has attained major cultural significance as a Jewish alternative to Christmas.
