The Boston Bruins and Celtics compete at TD Garden, just a five-minute walk from campus. Many Suffolk students have even completed internships there. Legendary Fenway Park, home of the Boston Red Sox, is a short subway ride from our front door. And the four-time champion New England Patriots play at Gillette Stadium, which is easily accessible by the commuter rail.
Some of the most memorable moments in sports history have happened in Boston and Suffolk’s athletic programs share in that great tradition.

east boston memorial park For the first time in Suffolk University Athletics history its outdoor varsity sports teams will call a place home thanks to a unique public-private partnership between the Rams and the City of Boston. Under a 10-year agreement with Boston, Suffolk will invest to transform the city-owned East Boston Memorial Park to establish a permanent athletics facility. This comprehensive restoration will result in updated facilities that will benefit Boston’s Parks and Recreation Department, East Boston High School, as well as serve as the new home field location for Suffolk Athletics teams. “We could not be more excited – the future home of the Rams’ baseball, men’s and women’s soccer and softball teams will be a first-class facility that will enhance the experience of our studentathletes and fans alike,” Director of Athletics Cary McConnell said. “I cannot begin to measure the significance of this partnership with the City of Boston that not only provides a home-field facility for our programs, but continues Suffolk’s long tradition of giving service to the wider community. We hope that this will provide opportunities for our student-athletes, as well as the Boston community, including our neighbors and the residents of East Boston.”
14 suffolk baseball
The renovation will include new electronic scoreboards, batting cages, storage lockers, fencing and more seating in a stadium at the park. Suffolk will purchase new training equipment for East Boston High School and award two scholarships each year to seniors. Additionally, scheduling of university events would not displace the high school and youth teams that currently use Memorial Park as Suffolk will play during set times in the fall and spring seasons. Memorial Park is an urban recreational area and is part of the city’s 2,100-acre chain of parks and waterways that provides residents and visitors with clean, green, safe and accessible open space. Since the inception of Suffolk Athletics its outdoors teams – baseball, soccer and softball – have packed their gear into vans and traveled across the city to a variety of fields where time and space became available. No longer will this timely tradition be a part of the student-athlete experience at Suffolk, instead it is hoped that Memorial Park not only have a significant impact on their development as athletes, but on their experience as Suffolk University students as a whole. The Suffolk community looks forward to this partnership with the city and its enhancement to the university’s experience. The Rams will begin competition at Memorial Park this fall.

Anthony Del Prete was named Head Baseball Coach at Suffolk University for the 2015 season and enters his second season at the helm in 2016. Del Prete will also serve as the department’s Associate Director of Athletics. Del Prete will replace Cary McConnell, who relinquished the roles he was named the University’s Director of Athletics. He becomes just the sixth baseball coach in the program’s 68 year history. In his first season in 2015, Del Prete guided Suffolk to its fifth GNAC Championship and fifth trip to the NCAA Division III Regional Tournament. Along the way three Rams were recognized by conference for their performances throughout the season. Josh Desai was named GNAC Tournament MVP following his complete game effort in a 3-2 victory over St. Joseph’s College in the semifinals and picked up second-team accolades. Brady Chant received a Gold Glove by the conference as the centerfielder who did not record an error on the year and was chosen to the All-GNAC tourney team, while Jon Lapolla, who led the Rams in batting average (.291), slugging percentage (.455) and on-base percentage (.429), was awarded a spot on the conference’s thridteam. Del Prete has served as an assistant coach at Suffolk for the past 10 seasons. In 2014 he was promoted to Associate Head Coach as Suffolk won their program’s second Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III New England Championship. Del Prete also served as an assistant in 2005 and 2009, seasons in which Suffolk advanced to two of the program’s four NCAA Tournament appearances with Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Championships. He takes over the program of his alma mater in which he graduated in 2004. In four seasons on the mound at Suffolk he recorded a 21-11 overall record helping guide the Rams to a 2002 NCAA Tournament appearance in which he was named GNAC Tournament MVP, the conference Pitcher of the Year and an New England Intercollegiate Baseball Association(NEIBA) All-Region selection.
He pitched for the Orleans Cardinals of the Cape Cod Baseball League in the summer of 2002 and served as closer for the Columbus All-Americans of the Great Lakes Summer League during their championship season in 2003. After his time at Suffolk, Del Prete had a brief stint with the North Shore Spirit of the independent CanAm League. In 2005, he signed with theEvansville Otters of the Frontier League. Del Prete spent 3 seasons playing professionally in Evansville, Indiana, helping the Otters win their franchise’s first and only league championship in 2006. He is ninth all-time in appearances (74) for the franchise. Del Prete has also traveled overseas to play as he spent the winter of 2005 in Perth, Western Australia, pitching for the Melville Braves of the Western Australia State League with stops in Antwerp, Belgium (2002) and Cuba (2011) in between. Following his playing career, Del Prete completed his Master’s Degree in Administration of Higher Education at Suffolk where he served as the department’s graduate assistant. From 2008 to 2015, Del Prete served as the institution’s Sports Information Director, overseeing all media relations and publicity of the athletics programs, while maintaining the department’s website. He also served as an advisory member for the institution’s athletic review committee in 2014. Alongside his baseball responsibilities, Del Prete will also serve as the department’s Associate Director of Athletics. He will oversee the marketing and promotion of the athletics programs, serve as the department’s compliance and recruiting coordinator and also handle scheduling for the varsity intercollegiate men’s sports teams. Del Prete is a native of East Boston in which he still currently resides.
