Ahimsa’s journey from the beginning is long and complex. It began with a story about how I worked at a financial trading company in Chicago and discovered that it was causing a lot of stress and anxiety. My dad, Chuck, and I worked tirelessly to open Ahimsa Oak Park in May of 2011. Shortly after, he was pulled to his purpose—to teach yoga and share the practice that helped him so much. Nine years later: multiple yoga trainings, hundreds of yoga classes, and dozens of sound baths later, he moved down south to enjoy milder winters. Kathryn and Laura Pekarik, two sisters that share the same passion for baking and wanted to share that passion with the world one cupcake at a time. Kathryn was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin's T-cell Lymphoma in May of 2010. Later that year, a benefit was held in her honor to help defray the costs of her medical care. To contribute, Laura baked 250 cupcakes to host a bake sale at the event. The cupcakes received such rave reviews that friends and family were requesting them by the dozen! As a result, Cupcakes for Courage was born out of a passion for baking and to raise money for cancer research. Art has always been my love. After a long career in laboratory medicine and teaching, I retired and pursued world travel, painting and art journaling classes. In 2013, I met my partner in Oak Park and fell in love with the village. Seven years later, a storefront in the Arts District became available. In late October, Purple Sun Arts LLC became a reality at 142 Harrison Street. Numerous paintings in acrylic ink and paint adorn the walls, beaded jewelry is displayed, and painted greeting cards are available. My collection of purple sun glass is on display for viewing and purchase, as is a collection of vintage and antique jewelry. New items are added nearly every week– the most recent being little leather medicine bag necklaces and rosary bracelets and necklaces representing the prayer beads of many world spiritualities. Wreaths, wall hangings and ornaments are available seasonally and year 'round. In the near future, hopefully, art journaling classes will be offered, as well as the curation of the art work of other artists.
