Quail Valley Elementary teacher gets welcome surprise By Donna Hill FOR THE FORT BEND STAR

Military deployments are not easy for any family. The adjustments and challenges are many and ongoing. For a Quail Valley Elementary School teacher, a military deployment came full circle to her classroom after nearly seven months of operating as a single parent. Air Traffic Control Petty Officer 2nd Class Jon Hale, a nine-year Navy veteran, came back two weeks early from a deployment in the Middle East. When he got home in late April he surprised his wife, Tiffany Hale, with a visit to her first-grade class. “We went out into the hallways and suddenly there were these red, white and blue decorations, and at the very end of the hallway, I see my students from class coming around the corner holding a sign, and within seconds all the pieces came together,”

Tiffany said. “I saw my husband coming around the corner, too, and I ran down the hallway and that first hug, I instantly just started crying in utter disbelief. The first hug was unbelievable.” Jon’s visit home was just as special for the couple’s two young daughters, Mallory and Avery, who had not seen their father since last fall. Their only contact with him since September was through a video reading program called United Through Reading (UTR) in which American military members record themselves readings children’s books or stories that are sent to loved ones back home. According to the UTR website, the program “eases the stress of separation for the service member, spouse, and child, and builds family bonds and resiliency.” It’s like a virtual story time for military families. “My girls were always asking, ‘I want to see Daddy!’ and I would put in the CD and

get the book and we would all read together - even though he was far away,” Tiffany said. Home and away The Hales, who were high school sweethearts, married in 2005 and became a military couple early on. Jon enlisted in the Navy and Tiffany received a teaching degree from Texas State University. She became a military wife after graduation and moved with her new husband to bases in Virginia, Maryland and San Diego. While in San Diego, in January 2018, Jon received orders to go overseas for a world tour aboard an aircraft carrier in the Middle East. Tiffany was pregnant with their second child, so they decided it was best to temporarily move the young family Tiffany and Jon Hale, shown here with daughters Mallory and to Katy to live with Tiffany’s Avery. Financial literacy workshop broadens minds, attitudes By Theresa D. McClellan FOR THE FORT BEND STAR

When 17-year-old Willowridge High School junior Sofia Molina decided to spend her Saturday in school making up for time lost with sick days, she received more than she bargained for by participating in an all-day financial literacy program organized by G&G Wealth Enterprises. The fledgling entrepreneurial student, visual artist and rapper won a door prize allowing her to get a free set of business cards. She also received a free book and met Blake Simon, motiva-

tional speaker and author of “The Transition: High School to College,” and she gained insight on the importance of networking and accessing financial aid to pursue her dreams. “I learned that financial aid is not that hard if you are talented and have a bright young mind, like me,” Molina said. “And I learned that business isn’t just a by yourself thing. It’s a team effort and every part of the team is very important. I noticed every person speaking on the different subjects was important. Now I’m an actor, produce music and do photography and whatever is needed for my visual arts business to be around. I want to grow and help oth-

ers as well.” Molina was among about 25 students and adults to attend Willowridge’s first Financial Literacy Workshop last Saturday. It was organized by 2005 graduate and business owner Brittney Golden and her business partner and fiancé, Kennon Gilliard. The workshop offered eight breakout sessions from local experts on budgeting and debt reduction, investing, revitalizing credit, real estate, financial planning and funding a business. The day also featured a children’s corner with workshops and specific messages for middle

Local election campaigns offer glimpses of an ideal world Far too often, politics and the spectacle accompanying them devolve into a culture of name-calling, denigration and downright bullying in order for candidates to build themselves up and tear their opponents down on a personal level. Frankly, it’s something which far too often pervades in our society from the highest levels of government down to the common person on the street. We’ve seen it time and time again and especially recently, with the last presidential campaign and several instances since. It needs to change. And I believe what I’ve seen from many of Fort Bend County’s recent elections offers a peek into what these competitions could – and should – look like. I briefly touched on this at the end of last week’s column, but felt compelled to take a deeper dive in this one. As you’ll see on our front page this week, I was able to speak with both Naushad Kermally and Nabila Mansoor, who are in a runoff for Sugar Land

Landan Kuhlmann LEAD REPORTER

City Council’s Position 2. Over the last few weeks and months, I’ve gotten to interact with several candidates who squared off for three open positions on the Fort Bend ISD Board of Trustees as well as Stafford mayoral candidates A.J. Honore, Leonard Scarcella and others. What I’ve found is this: Though many have a political background, these candidates are simply people at their core. Included in the field are mothers and fathers with students in FBISD schools. Some are community advocates, present or former PTA presidents or former FBISD students. They are longtime residents of the areas where they are running for office. From long-standing political giants to up and

comers and every candidate in between, there has been no shortage of choices, much like most election cycles. But these races seem different than any I’ve closely followed. There were no personal attacks that I have seen or found from my research. Nothing I turned up even hinted at the amount of vitriol I tend to expect with any race I follow either locally or nationally. Maybe I’ve simply watched too much national coverage of those elections, which make up just a sliver of every election cycle, so I expect every race to be full of vitriol. Or maybe I have not paid enough attention to local races around me, and this is the way they’ve always been. Either way, it’s been a welcome breath of fresh air to learn about every candidate and their values and discern what makes them tick, without seeing it devolve into the depths of what I’ve seen coming out of Washington, D.C. Obviously, each candidate has his or her own

ideas about what is best for Fort Bend County, Stafford or Sugar Land. Even if they agree on a core obstacle or problem, there are typically slight variations on how to best implement change or build upon an existing foundation. And you know what? That’s all right. Learning how to coexist and collaborate despite differences of opinion is – and will continue to be – a significant factor in Fort Bend County’s growth over the next 15-20 years. Respectful coexistence is a necessary step in that process for any city, state or county and is something we could stand to take to heart to no matter where we live. What matters is that the candidates of Fort Bend County elections who I’ve spoken with appear to have taken that to heart. At their core, they are Fort Bend County residents looking to make a difference in their communities, wherever they feel called to serve. Numerous candidates for FBISD’s board races have stated publically

that they will be longtime friends even now that the elections are over – and it just looks like more than hollow words. As I spoke with Kermally and Mansoor, there was no hint of animosity, no unprovoked or out-of-the-blue shots at their opponent or their policies. They appear to know that what remains the most vital piece of the puzzle is the people of Sugar Land’s District 2. What it boils down to is this: These races are about Fort Bend County’s wellbeing. This is their home, these are their neighbors, and they want it to continue thriving. Which is exactly what residents look for in an elected official. Now, the world is not all sunshine and daisies. These races are competitions, after all, and there will always be hard issues to tackle. Lines still need to be drawn at certain points. I also know it’s likely that things may never change, that we may be too far down a vitriol-filled path of no return when it comes to many political races.

But I’ll go to my grave believing there is a firm middle ground between a passive pushover who never takes a hardline stance and a fire-andbrimstone type who tears down opponents. There has to be a better way than sound bites we see on Fox News, CNN and other major news networks, which will always have their own spin on things to stir up controversy. And why can’t that start at a grassroots level? From what I have seen, this local election cycle has offered a glimpse into an ideal political world. Things can be accomplished – and progress made – without the hate that pervades far too many aspects of public life. So Fort Bend County, keep up the good work. Continue being an example of what can be accomplished when those running for office remember their roots and who they’re running for. Continue being the change that is so desperately needed. Maybe future generations will take notice.

plete the project by spring of 2020. Marcel District is the second mixed-use development by MARCEL to break ground in Fort Bend County over the past quarter. . Marcel District is a community that will strive to integrate creative lifestyle amenities and offer a fresh take on the community retail experience, with amenities such as a special event and entertainment space designed for outdoor activities and community gatherings. “The response to the Marcel District de-

velopment has been exceptional, proving that a mixed-use, neighborhoodfocused town center with fresh retail, restaurant and office tenants steps away from the Riverstone master-planned community are in high demand,” said Swapnil Agarwal, CEO and managing partner of Nitya Capital and Karya Property Management. “We are equally excited to partner with a commercial developer like MARCEL who is making a real difference in the local community with these generous donations.”

position as an insurance and financial specialist focusing on teachers. Later she earned her real estate license. Her business partner and future husband, Gilliard, is a mortgage broker, “So we provide every part of the pie,” Golden said. Now they have a Houston office with 30 agents. She was excited to return to her high school and offer information. “The more I’m able to educate families,” Golden said, “the more wealth and legacy we can have in our community.”

MARCEL, a commercial real estate firm based in The Woodlands, held its second “Groundbreaking for a Cause” event on May 14 to mark the official groundbreaking of Marcel District, a new mixed-use development with nearly 69,000 square feet of combined office and retail space located adjacent to Johnson Development’s Riverstone master-planned community in Sugar Land. Developers hope to com-

school and high school students led by Simon, a Marshall High School graduate, business owner and author; the Fort Bend ISD 2018 Secondary Teacher of the Year Shaughn Thomas, who is also founder of the “Invest In Yourself” seminars; and a student-led panel discussion on careers. “The principal was a client of mine and I was talking about business and presented to him an opportunity to educate the staff from feeder schools of Willowridge,” Golden said. “I gave him the workshop idea, my business partner put together an agenda and we got it going.” Golden said she is excited that they have been asked to return to the school in October for an encore presentation. She is a Prairie View A&M graduate with a degree in business administration and management. “This was important to be working in the schools,” Golden said. “Over the last five years, I saw the need and from my interest in financial planning and being a realtor, there is so much that people don’t know.” She said schools are not teaching children how to handle money and establish good credit, and some parents also are overwhelmed. Golden wanted to provide participants with peace of mind. “A lot of people overcomplicate the process of purchasing a home, be it residential or investment,” she said. “We had a lot of excitement once they realized you don’t always have to have the best credit or a lot of money or any money for investment. Once they understand the process, there will be a lot more people being able to put themselves in a better place of having assets over liability and being able to have financial freedom and make better financial decisions." Principal Terrence Hayden was excited to let his high school host the event. “Our kids have an entrepreneurial spirit,” he said. “We have kids who like to design T-shirts. We have several clubs here and we could have an in-house print workshop for our kids and school. It’s something our students are very excited about and I’m glad. “We want Willowridge to be the centerpiece of the community and to offer more programs as a way of giving back to the community and to ask for more parent participation. Financial literacy helps everyone in the community.” Golden pulls from her life experiences and field work to assist a client base

police officers and small business owners. After college, she was hired as a financial planner. “I loved numbers but decided that corporate America wasn’t for me,” she said. Golden started bartending and withdrew her retirement savings and income tax refunds to buy a small business. She met Gilliard, the future CEO of her agency, while bartending. After learning about her business history and her plans for her future, Gilliard offered Golden a

★ COUNCIL, FROM PAGE 1

Naushad Kermally About 23 years ago, Kermally made the decision to move his family to Fort Bend County and eventually Sugar Land, believing it was safe and well-run. Since moving to the city, Kermally has served on the board for Child Advocates of Fort Bend and various committees around the county, and now serves as an executive at a privately held wireless company in Sugar Land. He is running for Position 2 in order to use the experiences he’s gained during more than two decades in the city to help it stay on a forward track as it moves into the future. “I along with my entire family are passionate about our

city and have always loved everything about it,” Kermally said. “We have a beautiful city that we can all call home and we truly love living here, working here and also playing here. I want to keep our city vibrant and continue to attract businesses which our 118,000 residents desire.” Kermally’s top priority is public safety and quality of life for Sugar Land residents, similar to Mansoor. One of his focuses if elected will be on better ensuring emergency authorities have the necessary tools to serve the Sugar Land community. “I have always been a strong proponent of safety of our citizens. Our police do a great job of keeping us safe and the stats prove that we have very low crime rates and year-over-year

know Mimi and Grandad.” While her parents agreed to help out, and Tiffany quickly found a job with Fort Bend ISD, there were still challenges. “Not only finding a new job, but making the move and adjusting to everything,” she said. “The feeling still that it’s not my place, not our own home, it was adjustment. But it was easy because my parents and I are so close, and

Nabila Mansoor A 17-year resident of Sugar Land, Mansoor is a longtime grassroots advocate, having been a Youth Leadership Organizer for Mi Familia Vota, and served with OCA Greater Houston and Emgage USA. “I really thought about what

is to be an effective city council person, looked at my skill set and realized that there was an overlay there,” she said. “A lot of times with advocacy work, we’re trying to make change by convincing leaders to bring that change around, and when you’re actually in a position of leadership it’s going to be much more effective.” Mansoor said her goal in running is not so much a complete overhaul, but bringing a different perspective. “Having come from a nonprofit background, I think I have a different idea on how city council policies impact people on the ground,” she said. “I think that perspective is one that’s critical, and one that might be lacking.” Among Mansoor’s primary concerns is putting an empha-

sis on public safety when it comes to the area’s infrastructure. “We know the Brazos River is being eroded, and those rainfalls are not going to stop coming. I’d like to look into how we can make sure our city is safe, not just next year, but the next 10-20 years,” she said. “Help is going to need to come in our own purview, in our Fort Bend County government and Sugar Land city government. It’s a concern, and I know it’s a concern for my neighbors.” Another issue that gives her pause is what she says are underutilized retail spaces in the city. “I want to see my city thrive, see it move forward economically – not stagnate,” she said. “I would like to put more of an emphasis on how we bring that

economic development back into Sugar Land and make sure those spaces are filled and thriving, and that we’re a place small businesses want to come.” Mansoor assured the citizens of Sugar Land that her priority is them and them alone. “What’s important to them is someone who cares about how Sugar Land is going to move forward into the future and someone who will take responsibility for being the steward of taxpayer money,” she said. “We want to make sure we are intelligent about using those funds, not wasting them, and making sure we allocate it to work well for everyone.” Follow The Star on Twitter @ FortBendStar

they really enjoyed having us here with them.” Jon’s lengthy stay away from the family ended last month, when he flew in from France a few weeks before his scheduled arrival back to the U.S. Instead of going to his base in San Diego, he decided to arrive in Texas first – with Quail Valley being his first stop. He contacted the school principal, Carla Patton, to see how he could arrange a special visit, saying he wanted to come surprise the first-grade

teacher at her school but didn’t want to disrupt any of the daily school activities. The other teachers worked along in secret with the principal, planning the homecoming event. Patton wanted to get the whole school in on the welcome-home celebration. The secret was still hidden in an early morning email sent to Tiffany from the school principal, saying there was going to be a last-minute school assembly in the hallway for a few people from the school

district. “I thought it was probably for one of my fellow teachers,” Tiffany said. The Hale family, including Jon, will wrap up their tour in Katy this summer and move back to the Naval Air Station in San Diego. Tiffany’s advice for military families coping with their own long separations? “Build your community and your close friends and family,” she said. “You may not have

family around, but my advice is to find your own family – other military spouses and friends you can trust, especially in the same units and squadrons you are stationed with. To be able to find a few people you can rely on and trust is so important. Here in Fort Bend, the teachers at my school, along with my family, are my support system.”

decreases in crime as well,” he said. “I have also supported the men and women in blue by partnering with them for their annual Back the Blue event.” According to Kermally, mobility and drainage are key issues facing Sugar Land and ones he would address immediately if elected. “Although the city has a plan for this already I feel we can speed this up and get things moving quickly together for the residents,” he said.

Ridge Point’s Gray makes waves at state golf tournament By Bill McCaughey FOR THE FORT BEND STAR

Grip it and rip it is Reagan Gray’s philosophy. It worked well for her last week at Legacy Hills Golf Club in Georgetown, where the Ridge Point High School sophomore shot 3 over par and tied for 14th place in the UIL girls golf state tournament for Class 6A. “I knew I could do well at state this year,” Gray said. “Last year as a freshman, I was just excited to get the opportunity to be there. This year it was time to focus.” Last year, Gray placed 45th with a score of 16 over par. She improved by 13 strokes this year, following a first-round 74 with a final-round 73. “I am so proud of her,

and I am excited to see what she does in the fu-

ture,” Ridge Point golf coach Morgan Rollins

said. Gray started playing at a

very young age, receiving her first set of clubs when she was 4. She learned the game from her father, Jon Gray, a role model who she credits with helping her become the player she is. Jon Gray, an associate professor in health and human performance at the University of Houston, encouraged his daughter to have fun playing golf. “I don’t think we even kept score when she started,” he said. During middle school, Reagan Gray played volleyball and ran track. “When I got to ninth grade, I realized if I wanted to be serious about golf, I needed to drop other sports,” she said. Gray now has a coach at the Jim McLean Golf Center in Fort Worth and works out with a pri-

vate trainer twice a week to improve her stability, strength and power. She also focuses on keeping a positive attitude. Gray has caught the attention of several colleges. At the state tournament, there were eight college coaches watching her play. She would like to play at the NCAA Division I level and then move on to professional golf. But for now, she has a full schedule of tournaments this summer and is looking forward to qualifying for the state championships next year. “My goal for next year is a top 10 finish at state,” Gray said. Division-leading Skeeters rock Revs for five wins By Joe Southern

Freedom Division

Sugar Land Skeeters Lancaster Barnstormers York Revolution S. Maryland Blue Crabs

The Sugar Land Skeeters continued their domination of the Atlantic League’s Freedom Division last week by taking five of seven games from the rival York Revolution. The Skeeters held a comfortable six-game lead in the division going into this week, but face two of the best teams in the league this week on the road. They began Monday with four games at the Somerset Patriots (15-7), followed by three at the Long Island Ducks (16-8). Both teams are tied for the lead in the Liberty Division. At home last week against the Revs, the Skeeters continued to ride the player carousel with the San Francisco Giants

purchasing the contracts of outfielders C.J. McElroy and Courtney Hawkins and manager Pete Incaviglia replacing them with former major leaguer Willy Taveras (Houston

Astros, Colorado Rockies, Cincinnati Reds) and journeyman minor leaguer Jabari Henry. That makes seven players called up in less than a month.

BOARD CERTIFIED PODIATRIST, ACCPPS

NEWER TECHNIQUES

The thought of having surgery causes many people to panic. General anesthesia, hospitals, infections, and expenses can all be troubling. Fortunately, podiatrists have developed new minimally invasive foot surgery (MIFS) procedures for correction of foot ailments that once required traditional surgical methods. The many advantages of MIFS should help dispel surgical fears. Most foot surgeries can be performed in the podiatrist’s office using a localized anesthetic to numb pain. Next, a tiny incision as small as ¼ inch is made so that specialized surgical instruments can be inserted to make any necessary structural repairs. Wounds are typically closed with a single stitch, thereby limiting bleeding, scarring, and infection. Most patients can walk out of the office after the surgery.

14 runs and has a batting average of .306. Transactions In the last week, along with outfielders Henry and Taveras, the Skeeters signed left fielder Zach Borenstein, righthanded pitcher Troy Scribner and shortstop Ryan Jackson. Catcher Jeff Allen was placed on the temporarily inactive list. Back to the bigs Austin Adams, who pitched for the Cleveland Indians from 2014-16, joined the Skeeters in 2018 and went 3-0 with a 2.22 ERA and a save in 30 relief appearances. The 32-year-old returned to the major leagues Saturday with the Minnesota Twins, throwing two scoreless innings in relief against the Seattle Mariners. Adams is the seventh former Skeeters player to have appeared in a major league game after playing for the Skeeters. Upcoming The Skeeters return to Constellation Field on Monday, May 27, for seven games with the Somerset Patriots. On Friday, the Skeeters will host a blood drive before the game and have the Spazmatics in concert after the game. It is also Super Hero night and Candlelighters night. Skeeter of the Week Jared Mitchell earns Skeeter of the Week honors for his outstanding performance at the plate. Against York he scored three runs and had seven hits.

HINT: Many cases of bunions, bunionettes, hammertoes, and mallet toes have all been treated successfully using MIFS techniques. We sincerely hope you are not suffering with painful, nagging foot problems because you think treatment might involve surgery. Today’s advanced, conservative techniques can save you discomfort, recovery time, and cost. If this sounds like something that might encourage you to seek professional care for your aching feet, please give us a call to see how our services can benefit you. We’re located at 3143 Hwy. 6 South. You can reach us at 281-980-3668 to schedule an appointment.

Treatments for Cushings Disease

Cushing disease is a direct cause of an abnormally excessive growth by the body’s pituitary gland. The pituitary gland is located in the brain and is responsible for producing many hormones. Specifically with Cushings, there is too much production of a stress hormone called cortisol. A moderate amount of cortisol is normally released in the body as a response to stressful situations, but it is not released all of the time. Symptoms of Cushing include obesity in the waist, round face, and fatigue. If Cushing is caused by taking steroid medications such as glucocorticoids, symptoms should stop when the steroid is discontinued. In some cases, surgery may be necessary to help severe cases of this disorder when the brain is extensively involved. Some treatments are available to help reduce the amount of cortisol in the body. Mifepristone may help decrease the effects of cortisol on the blood sugars when taken for a short period of time. Ketoconazole is an antifungal medication that can reduce high levels of cortisol.

Seven builders recently unveiled 10 model homes in Sienna Plantation’s new Heritage Park neighborhood, accompanied by a grand opening “TexFest” in May. The new model home park showcased designs by Chesmar Homes, Lennar, M/I Homes, Meritage Homes, Newmark Homes, Perry Homes and Westin Homes. Homes are priced from the low $200,000s to the mid $400,000s. Both Newmark and Chesmar are opening multiple models in Heritage Park. Newmark’s two models feature floor plans for homes situated on 45- and 50-foot homesites. Three model homes will highlight Chesmar’s designs for single-family homes built on 45-foot properties and townhomes designed for 28-foot homesites. M/I Homes
