D1 Training Sugar Land transforming body and spirit When one thinks about the training it takes to be a professional athlete, what often comes to mind is the facilities and coaches to which they have access. Sometimes lost is the fact that it still takes discipline and a desire to transform for any athlete, amateur or pro, to get the most out of their session on multiple levels. The trainers at the new gym in Sugar Land want to take that mindset and give it to any and all residents around Fort Bend County. And if my first visit was any indication, it won’t be long before they’re transforming bodies and minds. As I walked into D1 Training Sugar Land at 16550 Southwest Fwy. last week for an interview with General Manager Matt Treadway, one thing became immediately apparent – these guys aren’t out to give you a cookie-cutter sales pitch. They’re ready and willing for the results to speak for themselves. Now, that’s not to say there aren’t any good selling points. The gym, which opened its doors in Sugar Land last month, offers customized and state-of-the-art equipment, professional coaches and sports sciencebacked programs. Hundreds of major-college and professional athletes such as Tim Tebow, Peyton Manning

and Chris Paul have trained within their walls or endorsed their training methods. But you don’t have to be an aspiring athlete or even a fitness guru to excel at D1 Sugar Land – you just need to come armed with a desire to better yourself. Treadway and co-owner Brian Sellen welcome all comers with open arms. Programs such as strength training, boot camps, one-on-one instruction and scholastics training are available to those ages 7 and up. Beyond that, very rarely have I heard anyone talk about anything the way Treadway – who has 20 years of experience in the fitness game – spoke of improving members of the gym not just on the field, but in spirit as well. The gym is founded upon not just sweat equity, he said, but also on instilling character values necessary for success in the real world through their training. It was so mind-blowing and refreshing that I almost felt inspired to jump into a training session with Treadway right off the bat despite not having worked out regularly since high school. But even if I’m not quite there yet, I don’t think you’ll be sorry to stop by D1 Sugar Land and see what they have to offer. These guys are the real deal.

Fort Bend Rising Star

CELEBRATES 30TH ANNIVERSARY By Landan Kuhlmann

For three decades, Dr. James Cox and his staff at Sugar Creek Animal Clinic have provided top notch care for ailing area animals. He’s aiming to continue doing so as long as they’ll have him. “I really appreciate the support the community has given me,” he said ahead of a 30th anniversary celebration last week. “I wouldn’t have been here for this long without that, and I intend to keep providing the same level of care I have in the past.” Last week, dozens of community members gathered inside the business at 14015 Southwest Fwy. Building 2 to commemorate Dr. Cox’s 30 years serving the community. Following graduation from Auburn University’s School of Veterinary Medicine, Dr. Cox worked in Columbia, South Carolina for a year before coming to Houston to work at Beechnut Animal Clinic from 1983-1989. He opened Sugar Creek Animal Clinic in 1990. “I just felt like I could do it on my own. I did a lot of looking around in the Houston suburbs, and I saw that Sugar Land was going to be growing the fastest,” he said of wanting to set down

roots in Fort Bend County. Treating mostly dogs and cats, Dr. Cox and his staff at Sugar Creek Animal Clinic offer general healthcare such as in-house lab work medical assessments, preventive and surgical services. Dr. Cox also just recently became certified to work with plasma cells, which he said can help his patients avoid surgery in nearly all cases. Dr. Cox’s rapport with his customers is also a key part of the practice, and why he believes the community has continued to

trust him with their pets for three decades. “My goal has always been to provide the best healthcare that I could for my patients. I think if you use that as your goal, everything else will fall into place,” he said. “I don’t practice much differently now than I did when I started. As long as you provide the best service you can, you’re honest with people and they trust you, they’ll come back.” As he reminisced about his 30 years growing along with the Sugar Land community, Dr. Cox said it has been a fun ride that combines his passions – people and medicine. Thirty years into his Sugar Land journey, Dr. Cox’s philosophy has not wavered. “The large majority of my clients, I also count as my friends. The most fun part of the practice is meeting people, talking to them and becoming friends,” he said. “On the clinical side, what I love most is internal medicine. I love puzzles, and I love figuring out why this animal is acting the way it does.” For more information, residents can stop by the office, visit their website at sugarcreekanimalclinic.com/ or give them a call at 281-242-9070.

Q: A:

I’m thinking about using a DIY kit to refinish my tub. What results should I expect? Do-it-yourself bathtub refinishing kits are marketed at home improvement centers as an easy way to fix a worn or damaged bathtub. Unfortunately, these kits more often than not lead to disappointing Chuck Charlton results and eventual professional refinishing. We at Miracle Method know, as nearly 20% of the bathtubs we are re-doing are an amateur attempt at tub refinishing. DIY kits use a hydrofluoric acid wash to etch the porcelain tub surface to help the new epoxy stick. Hydrofluoric acid etching is not only old technology, but can be dangerous. While epoxy is durable, it chips easily and eventually turns yellow. This method also often leads to eventual peeling of the new surface. Miracle Method will professionally repair and refinish your tub to a glossy like-new look and feel. Our process includes removing the existing caulk, a thorough two step cleaning of the tub, and repairing any chips. Miracle Method’s non-acid MM-4 bonding agent will ensure the new coats of high tech acrylic urethane will adhere and provide an even surface, and a final buffing and polishing will make your tub shine like it did the day it was installed. Miracle Method offers a five year warranty – that’s something you won’t find with a DIY kit!

D1 TRAINING SUGAR LAND OFFERS TRANSFORMATIVE FITNESS EXPERIENCE

COVER STORY

LANDAN KUHLMANN

BY

You don’t need to be a Division I athlete to enroll in a workout program at a new Sugar Land training facility. That said, you may have the mindset of one by the end of the first workout. Situated just off Highway 59 in Sugar Land at 16550 Southwest Fwy., D1 Training Sugar Land offers customized and state-of-the-art equipment, professional coaches and sports science-backed programs for those of any age dedicated to sports or fitness. “There’s nothing really like this in Houston,” General Manager Matt Treadway said of the gym, which opened its doors Feb. 4. The ownership team was seeking an opportunity to impact positive change in the community. They found that in D1 Training, whose mission is to help transform people’s lives for the better – on multiple fronts. ”Some of the selling points that got our attention was the character-building as part of athletic training. Most people who have been through some type of team sport as a kid had coaches who were a big influence in

From novices to avid workout gurus, there’s a great workout fit for every level. Kids from age 7 through high school seniors can take their pick of oneon-one instruction or age-specific scholastic training that includes strength, agility and movement instruction from one of D1 Sugar Land’s professional coaches, many of whom have a background in athletics and exercise science. “It’s very important to D1 that kids learn how to train properly from an early age, whether it’s great weightlifting form before there’s any weight on the bar, how to run correctly , or coordination through agility. With the right form comes confidence and coordination, which we can all use more of,” Treadway said. D1 Sugar Land also offers group training programs and assessments for youth teams which can take place at the facility or at a location of the coach’s choosing. A D1 coach can travel offsite to the team for training if necessary. “What we’re offering is not telling the kids how to play that team sport – that’s the coach’s job – but helping them be better at their chosen sport,” Treadway said. “We need to get kids active and moving – here, we teach Matt Treadway (left) and another D1 Training coach warm up for a workout. them how to move correctly and amazing (Photo by Landan Kuhlmann) things can happen.” They also know that no matter the age, every single body needs training and discipline. As such, D1 Training Sugar Land offers the same individualized training to adults seeking a transformation. “Everything inside us is constantly moving. Getting moving is critical to our health,” Treadway said. “We believe firmly that we motivate and inspire people to transform their lives through training. People who buy into the idea that they could use coaching to get past a plateau and are willing to put in the work will succeed here.” Many gyms effectively offer the same equipment and the same surface-level goals. But very few can offer the transformation of body and mind, as D1 Sugar Land strives to do. The values of D1 Training have attracted hundreds of Division I athletes and NFL draft picks to train within its walls nationwide. But you don’t have to be a fitness guru or pro athlete to see the benefits, Treadway said. All that’s needed is the drive to transform yourself inside and out. “It’s better for people looking for that transformation. When I see kids in here at 7-10 years old, and they’re in here three times a week training, I know for a fact we’ve lit a fire in them,” he said. “It says ‘Training is something I should do. Working out is something I should do.’ They’re going to carry that with them forever – it’ll be programmed into them.” Boys push training sleds during a workout session. Even Treadway himself – who has an extensive background both (Photo by Landan Kuhlmann) in working with athletes young and old from all walks of life, and in leadership within the fitness industry for more than 20 years – acknowledges the need for discipline. He knows guidance is the key and we deliver an outstanding product. Anyone who comes in to check out a workout will see that difference.” for anyone. FOCUS Spring is officially here – and for many of us, that means it’s time for some spring cleaning around our homes and yards. But why stop there? This year, why not do some financial spring cleaning, too? You can apply some of the same principles of traditional spring cleaning to your financial environment. Here are a few suggestions: • Clear your vision. Spring brings extra hours of sunshine – and to enjoy them, you’ll want to clean your windows, inside and out. As an investor, you also need to take a clear-eyed view of your situation periodically. Are you on track toward achieving your goals? If not, what moves can you make to get back on the right path? You need to be honest with yourself to see if you’re doing all you can to help make progress toward your objectives. • “De-clutter” your portfolio. As you go about sprucing up your house, you may find that you have a lot of clutter. Do you really need three mops? And are you holding on to those old calendars for any good reason? You’ll probably feel much better about your surroundings when you de-clutter them – and the same may be true of your investment portfolio. For example, do you own several investments that are virtually identical? If so, you might want to consider ways to help diversify your holdings. While diversification can’t guarantee profits or protect against losses in a declining market, it might help reduce the impact of market volatility on your portfolio. • Recharge your batteries. When you do your household spring cleaning, you may want to check the batteries on your smoke alarm, carbon monoxide detector and other devices. And as part of your financial spring cleaning, you might need to recharge your own investment “batteries,” so to speak. In other words, increase the power you’re providing to your portfolio. You can do this in a few different ways. First, you can increase your contributions to your 401(k) or similar retirement plan every time your salary goes up. You can also try to “max out” on your IRA contributions each year.

Time for Some Financial Spring Cleaning (For 2020, you can put in up to $6,000 in an IRA, or $7,000 if you’re age 50 or older). Another way to increase your investment voltage is to make sure you’ve got adequate growth potential in your portfolio based on your goals and risk tolerance. • Put your house in order. As part of your spring cleanup, you may want to check for damage on your roof, windows, siding and so on. But you also need to put your financial house in order, especially as it regards to protection. Do you have adequate life insurance? If not, your family could suffer if something were to happen to you. And have you

thought about how you could pay for long-term care if you needed it? The average annual cost for a private room in a nursing home is about $100,000, according to the insurance company Genworth. To retain your financial independence – and also to help protect your grown children from possibly having to deal with these costs – you may want to explore some type of long-term care insurance. By doing some spring cleaning around your home, you’ll lighten up your living space. And doing some financial spring cleaning may help you brighten your future.
