EDITOR’S PREVIEW Volume 39 • Number 6 JUNE 2020 Landan Kuhlmann Lead Reporter
Lisle Violin’s service is music to the ears When I walked into Lisle Violin Shop in Katy a little over two months ago for what I thought would be the April edition of this Journal, the soothing sound of a stringed instrument was the first thing I heard as they assisted customers with repairs. It instantly calmed me, and was the perfect introduction to what the Lisle family does in the music community. And though the COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted and halted many things, one thing I can never see it – or anything – stopping is Lisle Violin and its mission to unlock someone’s musical potential. Situated at 1575 W. Grand Pkwy. S #400 in the Fort Bend County portion of Katy, Lisle Violin Shop serves the stringed instrument needs of Greater Houston and surrounding areas. They rent, sell, repair, restore, and consign orchestral stringed instruments such as the violin, viola, cello, bass and bows for every orchestra program with a desire for improvement, including all string programs within Katy ISD and Fort Bend ISD. Their luthiers also repair, maintain, and even make instruments for groups such as the Houston Symphony and the Houston Grand Opera
Orchestra. Lining the walls are instruments ready to play the first or final notes of someone’s journey, while friendly customer service reps work diligently to ensure every problem is fixed so the instrument and its player can reach their full performance potential. In the back of the store, there is even a practice room where customers can test out the chords and find the perfect fit for them and their sound. As I listened to General Manager Matt Lisle – whose parents founded the original shop in Pasadena in 1984 – talk about how the mission hasn’t changed in more than 30 years, his passion was clear. And to me, that’s what it’s all about. You can spout all the words you want, but without a true passion for what you’re presenting, it’s just an empty sales pitch. And in that vein, Lisle Violin Shop’s mission strikes me a noble one, with revenue – while an obvious necessity for any business – a byproduct of the heart and soul the family has poured into the musical community over the years. So read their story inside today’s edition, and check them out for your stringed instrument needs.

Area businesses take precautions in reopening doors By Landan Kuhlmann LKuhlmann@fortbendstar.com Just like many restaurants in Fort Bend County, Lupita’s Mexican Restaurant in Sugar Land was hit hard by the impact of the stayat-home orders issued by state and county officials. The family-owned restaurant was closed to the public for about six weeks in March and April amidst the COVID-19 outbreak in Fort Bend County, which has infected more than 1,700 people as of publication, according to the county. But in early May, Lupita’s got some news that could signal the beginning of a return to normal for Jaime Garcia and his wife, who co-own the restaurant that has called Sugar Land home for 18 years. They opened their doors to the public again on May 1, while taking precautions to help prevent the spread of the disease. “It’s been OK,” Garcia said, noting they got by on to-go orders. “But we need to sell more in order to survive.”

Once customers have left, staff will clean and disinfect all surfaces including tables, chairs and countertops and provide hand sanitizer for those wiping down the tables. “It’s the right thing to do,” Garcia said. An office-services business located in Houston, Office Orioles, said there are physical changes that can be made to office buildings that allow for new employee protections. “One thing we’re helping with right now is reconfiguring office cubes,” said Mickey Beavan, vice president of Office Orioles. “And that’s not as easy as it sounds. A lot of times, people don’t have the parts necessary to do the reconfiguration.” Office Orioles also has seen the increase in demand for plexiglass installation and says they are partnering with providers to help offices install shielding for their employees. “Most desks weren’t made to have screws in the top of the desk,” Beavan said. “There are better ways to do it, and that’s going to be important to a lot of businesses when they reopen.” REOPENING CONTINUES on pg.13
Mercedes-Benz Sugar Land provides surprise bonus dealership employees From Staff Reports Mercedes-Benz of Sugar Land Owner and President Ken Enders paid out bonuses of $1,000 to each of the company’s 153 employees at the dealership on April 22 to help during the COVID-19 pandemic. “At Mercedes-Benz of Sugar Land, our employees are our company, the single most valuable asset we have,” said Enders. “My hope is that these bonuses will assist my employees and their families
in some small way.” According to the company, Mercedes-Benz Sugar Land made the donation in lieu of laying off employees. “This is why I love working for Mercedes-Benz of Sugar Land,” Assistant Service Manager Steve Ho said. “I’ve been here seven years and always tell people that our dealership is a family. We are taken care of and that’s why we are so focused on taking care of our clients. It’s a special place to be, especially right now.”
3 generations of Quality Service, Integrity & Honesty
Family Owned and Operated in Fort Bend County
Since 1951 Chuck Charlton of Charlton Auto Body in Stafford understands customers and treats them like family. The foundation for the success of Charlton Auto Body has always been focused on the customer, and it’s been that way for three generations. “My grandfather, E.C. Charlton, moved to Stafford in 1950, and opened up the business in 1951, and later named the company Charlton’s Garage and Auto Sales. In 1970 my dad, Johnny Mack, took over the company. When he retired in 1982, I took over,” Charlton said. Chuck kept the same phone number and business name, and built “Charlton Auto Body into what it is today.” It’s been 24 years in a very active auto business focusing on collision and insurance work. “If you wreck your car, that’s the kinda work we do – fix any damage. We’ve repaired them clear up to the value of the cars, so we’ve seen it all. And we work on all vehicles,” he said. As a successful small businessman in Stafford, Charlton is firmly established in the industry, yet has no plans for expanding the business. “I like to keep the business small so I can keep an eye on all aspects of the company,” he said. Charlton is candid about car tips after
a collision. “Number one, insurance companies try and get you to go to shops that work for them. I tell everybody you don’t have to work with shops that work with insurance companies. Most are so big, and they don’t have the hands-on experience we have here at Charlton’s. I tell people you have the right to choose the body shop of your choice. We have a great customer data base and a lot of customers, and most of our work is word of mouth,” he said. He stays away from cars during the weekend, but talks to customers over the phone if they need him. After discussing any damage issues, Charlton said, “I really don’t recommend customers take the car to the storage lot. Tow it to the house and I’ll get it out the next morning.” Not a tinkerer of cars in his spare time, Charlton does like his trips to Mexico. It’s one of his favorite fast vacation getaways. “We can get there in two hours,” he said. He’s happy to note that customer satisfaction is the key to success of the family business of Charlton’s Auto Body. “Our customers are not just a name and a number here, you know. We become friends with them, too,” he said. “Bring your car to Charlton’s. Where you’re treated as family and not just another customer,” he said.

LISLE VIOLIN SHOP TAPS INTO MUSICAL POTENTIAL COVER STORY
LANDAN KUHLMANN
BY
Potential is just that until someone unlocks the key. A Fort Bend County specialty stringed instrument store strives to do just that for any aspiring musician who walks through its doors. Lisle Violin Shop, situated at 1575 W. Grand Pkwy. S #400 in the Fort Bend portion of Katy, serves the stringed instrument needs of Greater Houston and surrounding areas. They rent, sell, repair, restore and consign orchestral stringed instruments such as the violin, viola, cello, bass and bows. “A lot of instruments come through our stores,” said General Manager Matt Lisle, adding that the company services and sells thousands of instruments every year. “There are not many companies doing what we do on the scale we’re doing it. We’ll help anyone because if they’re successful, we’re successful.” Matt’s father, Mark Lisle, founded Lisle Violin Shop along with his wife Margaret in Pasadena in 1984 as a music educator who had dealt daily with the struggle to maintain the condition of his student’s stringed instruments. Their mission was
Lisle Violin General Manager Matt Lisle. (Photo from Lisle Violin Shop website) to have a place where teachers, students, and musicians could come for all their stringed instrument needs. Since then, the company has opened three additional stores in the Houston region, serving every orchestra program with a desire for improvement, including all string programs within Katy ISD and Fort Bend ISD. Matt Lisle said he practically grew up around his family’s shop as a young man before going off to pursue other avenues, including enlisting and serving as a Naval Nuclear Reactor Technician. Eventually, however, a call to serve the musical community brought him full circle. “At some point I decided I wanted to go out and do my own thing. But I always knew I would come back,” he said. “My mother and father gave everything to the shop. …I know the importance

(Photo by Landan Kuhlmann) of what they’ve done and how much they’ve meant to the musical community in our area over the years by doing the right thing all the time.” When his parents began the shop, Lisle said an orchestra was considered successful if it had about 30 students. These days, he said many orchestras are seeing membership in the hundreds. He believes that is due largely in part to his parents’ efforts in Houston’s musical community, which he strives to continue to this day. “It’s about being in the right state and our company providing good, quality instruments to give the foundation for more musical success,” he said. “It’s a combination of things that have gone right in our area.” As a string specialty shop, Lisle Violin Shop serves students of all ages, and is able to take care of every need for any level of player. Lisle also believes the store’s rental program not only gives students the opportunity to start with a highquality instrument, but also allows them to work toward purchasing an instrument that will carry them forward in their musical journey. With the largest repair staff in the state of Texas, Lisle Violin Shop doesn’t just sell and rent instruments. Their luthiers also repair, maintain, and even make instruments for groups such as the Houston Symphony and the Houston Grand Opera Orchestra. Each instrument that leaves the shop has been adjusted to professional standards by Lisle repair staff. Whether it’s for a beginner or a professional, each instrument undergoes the same rigorous process and treatment. “We’re always trying to do the best thing for the customer at all times, which is providing a good quality product and service,” Lisle said. “It’s very high level.” In the end, Lisle knows that from when his parents began the shop nearly 35 years ago to now, their core principle has never wavered. It’s all about the customer. “My favorite part of this is when we’re talking to parents of a new student,” Lisle said. “We’re seeing them pick up the instrument for the first time, and seeing the wonder in their eyes and the excitement of the student becoming engaged with the instrument is amazing. They may have
no idea what to do, but they know they want to learn to play. “That’s the payoff,” Lisle added. “Nothing can top the joy of seeing a student become one with the music and unlocking their boundless potential. “Every year we have a new round of students who want to play, and it never gets old. That’s the blessing,” he continued. “Those students
could turn into professional players or be music lovers for their whole lives. Their potential is unlimited.” All Lisle Violin Shop locations are open from 9 a.m. -6 p.m. Monday through Saturday. For more information on Lisle Violin Shop and what they have to offer, you can visit their website at https://www.violins.com and select the location nearest you.

FOCUS The social distancing and stay-athome orders necessitated by the coronavirus have led many of us to feel isolated. Still, we’ve fought back through social media, “virtual” gatherings and walks in the neighborhood, where we could greet friends and neighbors (from 6 feet away). But when you’re dealing with the financial effects of the virus and you’re investing alone, you could encounter some problems that may prove costly. Of course, with so much investment-related information available online, on television and in any number of periodicals, it’s not surprising that some people feel they can invest without any assistance. But the volatility of the financial markets over the past few months has also pointed to the dangers of going solo in the investment world. And you might find that a professional financial advisor can help you in several ways, including the following: Taking emotions out of investing. During this period of market turbulence, many self-guided investors are letting their emotions drive their investment decisions. As a result, they sell investments when their price is down, “locking in” their losses. Furthermore, if they then stay out of the financial markets, they will miss out on the eventual recovery – and some of the biggest gains in market rallies usually occur right at the beginning. But if you work with a financial advisor who has helped you develop a personalized investment
Why Should You See a Financial Advisor? strategy based on your goals, risk tolerance and time horizon, you will be far less likely to react to extreme market conditions by making illadvised decisions. Maintaining perspective. When you’re putting away money for the future and you suddenly have a lot less of it, you might start to wonder if that future is somehow in jeopardy. But if you’ve been working with a financial advisor and following your investment strategy, you’ll know that you don’t have to immediately cash out those investments that have lost value, and you may not need to liquidate them for decades if they were designed for a long-term goal, such as retirement. By the time you do need to sell them, their value may well have appreciated significantly. And if you’ve got a well-constructed portfolio, you’ll also own shorter-term, less volatile investments to help meet your current cash flow needs. Understanding the history of

investing. The recent market instability is unique in the sense that its cause – a worldwide pandemic – is so highly unusual, and it hopefully will be a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Typically, prolonged market downturns are triggered by explainable financial or economic factors, such as the bursting of the “dot-com” bubble in 2000. However, market drops of 20 percent or more – generally referred to as bear markets – are not at all unusual and have happened every few years over the past several decades. Financial advisors are well aware of this history and share it with their clients. And for many people, the knowledge that “we’ve been here before” is reassuring and makes it easier for them to continue following their investment strategies. The road to your financial goals is a long one, with many twists and turns. So you might like to have some experienced company along the way.

Another area business now open to the public again is Texas Doggie Daycare in Missouri City. Owner Greg Boerner and the company – which provides daycare and boarding for dogs in Stafford, Missouri City and Sugar Land – had their doors closed since early March, but reopened in a limited capacity May 4. “I think there’s a little bit of social pressure to reopen, but we’re also in a situation where we can control a lot of this around social distancing (and everything else),” he said.
In addition to maintaining social distancing and wearing protective equipment such as masks and gloves, Boerner said several additional measures are in place that were practiced even prior to the initial shutdown. Employees are intensifying their cleaning and disinfecting routines for floors, countertops and any other touchable surfaces. They will also provide hand sanitizer at the front desk for pet owners, and are cleaning each pet leash with disinfectant. Boerner and his staff even have an area where a pet owner can let the dog walk in on their own to limit human contact.
