Trust the foundation for Morales Brothers Construction It’s not always easy to find someone you trust in this day and age. Whether it’s a news station or a person you meet, it seems as though there’s almost always a hidden agenda or someone waiting to pull out the rug from under you. At Morales Brothers Construction, however, their word is their bond – at least as they would tell it. While it’s true there may be only so much you can tell from a phone conversation – which is basically all I have these days because of everything happening around us – I’d also like to think that I have a good sense of when someone is making an empty sales pitch and when there’s genuine soul behind what they’re telling me. When I spoke with Ronnie Morales a few weeks ago for this month’s cover story, we hit it off instantly. From a shared interest in putting our best foot forward and attempting to put others’ needs ahead of our own – to varying degrees of success – the conversation took off. And let me tell you – he seems as genuine a

human as I have ever spoken with. Morales and his brother Vincent are the partners behind Morales Brothers Construction, a company that has provided Fort Bend County and the surrounding areas with kitchen and bathroom remodeling and custom cabinetry work for nearly 20 years. What began two decades ago as two brothers with a dream of entrepreneurship has grown into a company that – with them as the driving force – prides itself on its integrity and never cutting corners with their work, which consists of anywhere from 120-150 projects per year. As Christian believers, Morales said he and his brother have always had a heart for service, which is what has kept them firm in their mission since it began in 2000. They get to live out their dream while helping others along the way. Isn’t that what we should all strive to do anyway? Johnson Development lands area

communities on top-selling list By Landan Kuhlmann LKuhlmann@fortbendstar.com Area home developer Johnson Development Corp. landed six communities on the mid-year top sellers list, according to a recently released report by Robert Charles Lesser & Co. (RCLCO). Three of the developer’s six top-50 communities reside within Fort Bend County – Sienna in Missouri City, Cross Creek Ranch in Fulshear and Harvest Green in Richmond. According to the report, Johnson Development’s top-ranked community is Sienna, which ranked No. 23 with 298 sales during the first half of 2020 — a 6 percent increase. Harmony in Spring tied for No. 37 with 235 sales, while Cross Creek Ranch reported 230 sales to tie for No. 39 on the list. Viridian in Arlington came in at No. 41 with 229 sales, while Harvest Green’s 20 percent increase in sales to 225 helped the community

rank No. 43. Trinity Falls — located in McKinney — landed at No. 48 with 191 sales, according to the report. “Overall, our sales have been strong this year, even with the unusual year we’ve had,” Johnson Development chairman and CEO Larry Johnson said in a news release from the company. “There

has been a surge of people seeking communities close to nature and new homes better suited for their families.” Now in its 45th year of development, Johnson Development has 17 active communities, 13 of which are in the Houston region. For more information, visit www.johnsondevelopment.com.

St. Catherine of Sienna Episcopal Church welcomes our new Pastor, Rev. Andrew Ellison. Fr. Andrew will begin his tenure on August first. Native Texans, Fr. Andrew and his wife, Casie, grew up in the Dallas Fort Worth area. He is a graduate of Texas Tech University and graduated from Seminary of the Southwest with a Master

of Divinity. He enjoys cooking, fishing, watching sports and especially riding roller coasters with his four children. St. Catherine of Sienna Episcopal Church, located at 4747 Sienna Parkway in Sienna Plantation, is a reflection of the surrounding communities both in its diversity and in the age of its members. From a young age, Ronnie and Vincent Morales were taught to always show up and put their best foot forward for anything. They’ve taken that mantra and instilled it in their own business, which has now served Fort Bend County and surrounding areas for two decades. “We’ve worked ever since we could do so and were taught to always work hard and show up. My mom instilled that into us,” Ronnie said. “If we could work for ourselves and not put our livelihood in the hands of others, that would be great – that’s why we wanted to be entrepreneurs.” Ronnie and his brother Vincent have provided residential kitchen and bathroom

dream of two brothers that has morphed into a service that has helped thousands of people with a need many may not realize they have. “We started out working together, just the two of us, and we’ve grown it since then.

We love the industry and we knew we wanted to be a part of it somehow,” Ronnie said. “We get to go to work, while living out our passion.” As a teenager, Ronnie said he got an early introduction to the industry working alongside his father on homes and caught the bug. His love of woodworking and reading blueprints initially inspired him to go into architecture and designing – but after a little more than two years sitting behind a desk every day, something was still missing. “I found out I didn’t like sitting down all day long behind a computer drafting and designing,” he said. “After that, I kind of had that seed planted that I was going to go into construction.” So, he called up Vincent and the dream was born. “The dream was something in my spirit. We prayed about it for a while because it was hard for me to give up a job where I got a paycheck every week and to now be self-employed,” he said. “But after praying about it, I got confirmation and I jumped in. And I’ve never looked back.” With 20 years in the industry, Morales said trust and integrity are two major factors in the brothers being able to grow their business the way it has. While it started out with just the two of them accepting and working on projects, the pair has grown the business to 16 employees that work as a team to make sure their core values of punctuality, respect, integrity, cleanliness, and excellence are brought to every project they do. They may not work in the field anymore – Vincent serves as the production manager while Ronnie is the general manager and works with sales for the company – but that doesn’t mean their values aren’t present in their work. Ronnie said, “We always try to exceed our clients’ expectations; we don’t cut corners and we do what we say we’re

going to do. We get to bring our core values to the clients’ homes and into the projects.” Though they have done multiple projects outside of Fort Bend County, about 75 percent of the brothers’ contract work comes close to home in Fort Bend County as the area continues its booming growth. Ronnie said, “Having a fulltime team allows us to keep multiple projects running, smoothly and on schedule, as opposed to having to wait for subcontractor’s availability.” But in the end, what matters most to the brothers is not just finishing a project and moving on to the next one. In light of the coronavirus pandemic, virtually all of us have considered health-related issues. But for people facing a serious, chronic illness, such as Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, diabetes or cancer, health concerns are an everyday matter. If you’re fortunate, you may never be afflicted with such maladies, but the future is unpredictable. Of course, going through these health challenges bring physical and emotional concerns – but also financial ones. How can you prepare for them? Essentially, you’ll need to consider four key areas: investments, insurance, legal arrangements and taxes. Let’s take a quick look at each of them: Investments – You’ll likely need to draw on your investments for at least some of the expenses associated with your illness. So, within your portfolio, you may want to establish a special fund devoted entirely to these costs, whether they be health care, modifications to your home, transportation and so on. A financial professional can help you choose investments for this fund, as well as make recommendations for your overall investment strategy, including techniques for boosting your income, such as adding investments that can provide an income stream that kicks in when you think your costs will rise. Insurance – Depending on your health status, you may be able to collect Medicare earlier than the traditional starting point at age 65. Even so, you’ll likely need to supplement it with additional coverage. But you may also want to look beyond health insurance. For example, you might be able to purchase a “chronic illness rider” that allows you to tap into life insurance benefits while you’re still alive. Or you might consider adding a “longterm care rider” to a life insurance policy; this rider offers financial benefits if you ever require daily care that you can’t provide for yourself. And some foundations, states and drug companies offer programs that can help pay for some costs that your insurance won’t cover. Legal arrangements – If you haven’t already done so, you may want to establish the legal documents most appropriate for your situation, such as a durable power of attorney for finances, which gives someone the authority to manage your financial affairs if you become temporarily incapacitated, possibly due to flare-ups of your chronic disease. Once you’ve recovered, you regain control of your financial decisions. You might also want to consider a health care proxy, which appoints an individual to make medical decisions for you if you can’t. In creating or revising these documents, you’ll need to consult with your legal professional. Taxes – You might qualify for Social Security

disability payments, which, like other Social Security benefits, are taxable, so you’ll need to be aware of what you might owe. But you might also be eligible for some tax breaks related to your condition. If you still itemize tax deductions, you may be able to deduct some medical expenses, as well as certain home improvements, such as wheelchair ramps, bathtub grab bars, motorized

stairlifts and so on. Your tax advisor may have suggestions appropriate for your situation. Dealing with a chronic illness is never easy. But by considering how your illness will affect all aspects of your life, getting the help you need, and taking the right steps, you may be able to reduce the financial stress on you and your loved ones.

Marine audio system builder making new home in Rosenberg From Staff Reports Wet Sounds, a maker of high-performance marine and powersports audio systems, is building a new facility in Rosenberg spanning more than 118,000 square feet of warehouse, fabrication and office space. The site has also been master planned to accommodate 280,000 additional square feet for future development according to a June news release. A Design/Build project by Houston-based KDW Architects, the new Wet Sounds facility is located on a 27-acre tract at 2975 Louise St. It began construction earlier this month, and is slated for a spring 2021 completion. “Wet Sounds is a growth-oriented company that brings highly skilled, goodpaying jobs and significant capital investment to Rosenberg as well as a willingness to engage in the community and work cooperatively with regional partners,” Fort Bend County Precinct 1 Commissioner Vince Morales Jr. said. “Also, this exciting new project expands the commerce core in Rosenberg and encourages
